  1. Wonderful 2 days

It was a family 2 day break and it was wonderful. Everything was spot on. The cleanliness of the site and amenities were just fabulous. Would certainly recommend without hesitation.

  2. Pretty, friendly, welcoming and great value

Only stayed for one night but the place was very pretty, great facilities (and very clean), little shop with anything you might need that you’ve forgotten. Recycling centre for the eco conscious among us. Firepit with every pitch and you can buy logs from the site also at a reasonable price. Friendly, lovely staff who were very accommodating. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning. Thank you

  3. Hobbit House

We camp at the Hideaway each summer for 2 weeks, but this week had a 2 night break in a Hobbit House. We were as equally impressed!! Of course the facilities are the same whatever you sleep in and they are second to none. We constantly recommend the Hideaway to all our friends.

  4. Hobbit hoose

This was our first visit to the hideaway on a1 night stay , very very impressed with the washroom , cleaning , toilet facilities. Great overall location and neatly spread out site . We love the eco friendly nature of the site . X

  5. A return trip to the hideaway

The hideaway is a place I don’t like to leave. The pitches are huge, campires brilliant and the bathroom facilities are excellent. The bathrooms are spotlessly clean and warm in cooler weather. There is also a drying room which is a brilliant idea with our British weather. On this trip we did some pretty, local walks, a trip to Whitby and a day in York so there’s lots of variety.

  6. English safari

We spent a week on our first adventure and visited 4 sites during the week so we can compare….. The Hideaway was leagues ahead of the others in every respect (except perhaps the view at Robin Hoods Bay). The main log cabin which houses facilities is stunning in both useability and cleanliness. We will return soon!! Thanks Barney!!

  7. The Hideaway is fantastic, beautiful place to stay. Really Quiet and relaxing, the kids had lots of fun exploring and looking for bugs, birds and places to hide. It’s was perfect sat by the fire on the evening, watching the stars. The facilities were impeccable, I was blown away at just how clean and organised everything was, we were only there one night so didn’t get to use all the amenities but it seemed everything was catered for, I think a family could happily camp here for a good week or two and not crave for those home comforts to much.

  8. hideaway hobbit house

Stayed for a couple of nights in a hobbit house. Great experience. Spacious with a log burner and sleeping for four and dining facilities. No fridge in house but shared fridge in main building where shop, showers, toilets and washing up facilities are. Nice patio area with log burner. Great green site with good ethics and values of respect. Recommend to anyone – unless your a noisy disrespectful dumper 😉

  9. Lovely site tucked away in the countryside. Facilities were spotless and some of the best we have seen camping. Good access to numerous places so would visit again

  10. A real Hideaway

The park had large electric pitches, with fire pits and good tree/hedge cover. There was a cool vibe, eco friendly and very unspoiled feel to the Hideaway. Staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly! Would recommend it.

  11. A cheeky one night stay

We stayed here on the way down to Center Parcs in Nottingham with the family in one of the Hobbit Houses. Great facilities, a friendly welcome and all in all a fantastic place to stay. The kids had a ball and can’t wait to come back again.

  12. Lovely, welcoming, eco-conscious site.

I booked the Hideaway for a 2 night stay for my myself and partner and another couple. Upon arrival, we were given a choice of plots and due to the weather (Storm Callum) the owner suggested we stay in a sheltered area, which was really helpful. The site is so clean, well maintained and accessible. The ability to have a fire pit is really nice too. The only downside was the limited amenities in the surrounding town but there’s towns a little further out which have more going on. We’ve recommended this site to a number of people and have already discussed returning ourselves…maybe to a hobbit house next time!

  13. We were lucky enough to book our stay during a quiet period, as the season was coming to an end. We stayed for four nights, and on the final night we had the whole campsite to ourselves! On arrival, we were greeted with a friendly welcome from the owner, Barney. He gave us all the necessary information and made us feel at home. We stayed in one of the Eco Pods, which doesn’t have electricity/heating, but we found it comfortable enough, even when the temperature dropped to one degree! All pitches/pods come with their own fire pit, and wood is available on site at a very reasonable price. The pod has a double bed, seating and decking area. We lit the pod with tea lights, making it very cosy inside. The facilities on site were exceptional; very clean and modern. Toilets and showers are cleaned daily around midday, even when we were the only people here! The drying room is always toasty, the pot wash area provided washing up liquid (eco friendly, cruelty free and vegan!) and the fridge/freezers where free to use. There is an extensive refuse area with clearly labelled bins for recycling. When ever we needed to talk to someone, or ask for information, the staff (Barney/Katie) where exceptionally friendly and helpful, and willing to give us all the time needed, without feeling like we were imposing. We did find that occasionally the sat-nav (Waze app) would bring us through the private adjoining land, down a dirt track. Barney has put signs up at this turning telling you to ‘ignore your sat-nav,’ but we missed this the first time! If you use this app, we have updated it to stop anyone else going down this route. The site it situated perfectly between all the local attractions, with just a 30m drive into York. We loved our stay at The Hideaway at Baxby Manor, and will definitely be returning to try out the Hobbit pods!

  14. Relaxing family time

We were lucky to have a cloud free night… we roasted marsh mallows on the fire and looked at the stars…. it was a complete change to our usual weekend routine! The hut was warm and dry… we will definately return!!

  15. Camping the way it’s supposed to be.

Good level pitches and areas separated by hedges/trees so feels small and secluded. Each has its own fire pit which was nice. Small shop with essentials. Excellent facilities though some toilets and shower were locked, to minimise cleaning I assume which meant some queuing in the morning. Narrow lane approach which was not difficult even for a novice Motorhome driver, not far off the A19 so great location for exploring and walking or 25mins drive into York. No cars allowed next to the tents but parking was close enough not to cause a problem. A bit pricey if you want EHU but a site I would recommend

  16. An idyllic retreat

All aspects of the site were so good. The facilities were great and Barney was so friendly and helpful. The little shop is very well stocked with camping essentials. Addition of a fridge and freezer was a bonus! The Sanctuary area was so idyllic and peaceful. We loved being able to have a fire pit and bbq. We were alongside the river and saw lots of wildlife and the birds chorus in the mornings was wonderful. We walked to Plum and Partridge in the village which has beautiful decor and amazing menu. We also did longer walk to pub in Carlton Husthwaite for a drink which has a lovely beer garden. We drove to Sutton Bank to walk to the White Horse. All in all a perfect getaway which we’d highly recommend.

  17. reat Campsite

Second time stayed here facilities beautifully clean and modern Countryside setting out of the hustle and bustle Camped with motorhome but the Hobbit houses look fun for next time Most campsites don’t allow camp fires but The Hideaway provides great fire pits for each pitch

  18. A top place with top staff

This was my 6th stay at the Hideaway and still love the place. The facilities are fantastic and there is so much to do in and around the area. This year we stayed in one of the new hobbit houses……. they are amazing. So much space in them and perfect for my 14 month old who thoroughly enjoyed her glamping trip. There is everything you need in the hobbit houses to make your holiday a good one from plates and cutlery to a gas stove and log burner and the beds are extremely comfy, slept very well. We were nice and cosy with the log burner going. Would highly recommend giving a hobbit house a try, the pods and tent pitches are fab too. Get booked up now 😊

  19. Can’t wait until next time

Wonderful in every aspect, the cleanest washrooms we’ve ever experienced. Great space between pitches, too much to mention as it is all awesome

  20. hideaway – a great find

i thought the site was excellent i like the efforts made to protect the environment The facilities were immaculate The pitches give plenty of room and its nice to have the fire pits Great access to walks from the campsite Also very sheltered – useful when we had the storm that we had last week

  21. Great Campsite

This is a lovely campsite with excellent facilities. Having to remove your outdoor shoes or using the provided shoe covers before entering the shower/toilet block is a great idea. Unfortunately not everyone adhered to the request! Great that they provide recycling bins and having somewhere to dry your towel after a shower was most welcome.

  22. Lovely through and through

Enjoyed a last minute overnight stay in our campervan, and it was lovely in every way, we’ll be back, and hope to stay in a Hobbity Hole place too, one time.

  23. My favourite campsite!!

The site was excellent…all pitches were within close proximity to the facilities (as apposed to the usual camping lot of being relegated to a far flung field beyond rows of caravans) The facilities were clean and had a nice new feel to them, and the fire pits on each pitch were a welcome bonus. The camps views on the environment and recycling are admirable. I only wish we could have stayed longer!

  24. Nice campsite that allow open fires

We were looking for a campsite in North Yorkshire that allows fires and offered a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, and the Sanctuary area at the Hideaway@Baxby Manor did not disappoint. The Hideaway itself has good toilets, showers and pot washing facilities. These were all clean and well maintained. The main building also has a drying room and points which you can use to charge a mobile phone. The small shop/office had some essentials in case you run out, this is also the place to get logs for a fire. The Sanctuary is the adult only area of the campsite and has a small number of secluded pitches. We stayed on pitch T30 which is the furthest pitch from the facilities so very quiet, it was lovely to be able to sit around the fire in the evening watching bats flying overhead and listening to the sounds of the wildlife. You cannot get a vehicle close to the pitches in the Sanctuary so you need to carry all your equipment along a track through the trees, though a trolly is left on each pitch to help make this easier. The Hideaway has an eco ethos and provides eco liquid soap in the toilets and eco washing up liquid in the pot wash, hopefully, they will install an electric vehicle charging point in the future as access to one of these would have been useful for me and I am sure it would be for others in the future. We enjoyed our weeks stay and I would recommend this site to anyone looking for a campsite in this part of Yorkshire. If you drink do try the local cider sold in the site shop.

  25. Fresh air and peace

Top notch. Brilliant facililites. Spotless. Loved the fact everyone is politely asked to wipe down the sinks ater use…. and they did. Shoe covers or bare feet to keep the floors clean. Really spacious pitches with occassional hedges and different levels of grass height so it doesnt feel like a field. The hobbit houses looked amazing. What an adventure. Maybe next time. Would go again and recommend

  26. Little Gem

An idyllic campsite in the middle of no where. Somewhere lovely to get away from it all. We loved watching the stars at night sat round the fire. Facilities were immaculately clean, loved being able to recycle everything and the pitches were lovely and spacious. Definitely will stay again when we are in the area.

  27. Perfect retreat.

Stayed atThe beginning of September with my daughter. We had one of the 5 hobbit houses and were lucky enough to be the only occupants! Not coming to Yorkshire for the weather, we got lucky.! Had three perfect days and nights. We were able to enjoy the benefits of the fire pit and the log burner. The beds were comfortable and hobbit houses adequately equipped. The facilities in the communal block was 2nd to none. Fabulous showers and washrooms, great pot wash area (with mobile phone charging point ) And a fantastic drying room, which in the cooler weather is excellent for drying towels. The idea of wearing overshoes in the shower rooms and the available J cloth’s for wiping down basins kept the washrooms spotless, so well worth the effort . The Night skies in the Yorkshire moors are spectacular and we spent one evening laying on a picnic blanket stargazing. We did a short walk around the village, which was very pretty. (Directions available from the site office) . Plenty of things to see and do locally and close enough to York. (Suggest the park-and-ride). Look out for the reductions in September as this made our stay very reasonable. Thank you Barney for a lovely stay.

  28. The Hideaway

A camping trip with my 9 year old son, we wanted a campsite that was a ‘get away from it all feel’ Only a short drive from York, but it really did live up to our expectations, loved the fire pits where my son lit his own fire. The washing block was spotless, and had all the facilities required. Would thoroughly recommend, and will definitely be back.

  29. Natural

Amazing site ,peace, tranquil surrounded by everything natural and lots of open areas.Great having the fire pit…sitting out under the night sky ..candles vino ….blanket hat and gloves…but fabulous.A must place to go to get away and unwind .

  30. Gem of a Campsite

We stayed here for 2 nights and loved it. The facilities were great and immaculate. I really loved the drying room what a fab idea. The owner was extremely helpful when we needed an extension to our hook up and air bed pumps providing them for no extra charge! Site is very spacious and everyone has enough privacy. Each pitch has a fire pit and you can bring your own wood which is a bonus! The only very small downside was wheelbarrowing our tent and belongings back and forth from the car. However we completely understand the set up and reasons for this and it definitely does not put us off returning. Thanks for a great stay!

  31. Best campsite ever

What a great campsite. Very clean facilities, friendly staff, great location, just brilliant. The Deli in easingwold craft delicious pizza’s. I will definitely be returning to the hideaway at Baxby manor.

  32. Great location, friendly and helpfull staff

Had a really great time. However it’s a busy site and lots off children. We will come back but maybe out of season and will try the eco huts

  33. a brief stay in a beautiful spot

stayed 2 nights in our own tent, friendly and clean, very good facilities. enjoyed the peace of being away from hustle and bustle. very good ethos

  34. Hidden location. Cars not on pitches but are nearby. Lots of wild areas between pitches. Ethos really sound – fires, tree climbing, playing in the beck, recycling. Communal areas are really well planned out, warm and luxurious. The drying room is wonderful. Bathrooms clean and gorgeous. No shoes allowed in bathrooms which really helps with this. Coffee caravan, artisan bread, butcher on site and a book swap area.

  35. A week at The Hideaway

Got a last availability booking in The Sanctuary, a separate set of 6 secluded pitches away from the main site (& adult only). These pitches are private & spacious, a couple of hundred metres from the main facilities. The facilities are modern, clean & user-friendly (always instant hot water!), including most basic amenities. Open fires are welcomed, with fire pits for every pitch The site is very rural, but 5 minutes from the A19 (York about half hour drive) & local towns & villages Cars not allowed on the pitches, but barrows provided to help ferry stuff

  36. Litttle piece of P&Q

Been several times and enjoy every one. The facillities are spotless and the drying room a godsend – usefull for drying damp towels ( and wet clothes if it happens to rain) The only thing I would suggest is that Barney adds to his little list of does & don’ts is to ask people to respect pitch boundaries. Have stayed on V1 several times it is annoying to have random people using your pitch as a cut-through to other pitches or as a shortcut to the loos.

  37. Family camping trip

Fabulous campsite with an abundance of things to do nearby. Well maintained facilities, chilled atmosphere and child friendly. We first visited last year, booked for this year while we were there and we booked again for next year while we were here! Each pitch has a parking space which is nearby meaning there’s no cars on the fields which is lovely but the cars aren’t far away to carry things (there are wheelbarrows to carry equipment). Each pitch also has its own firepit, great for marshmallows on an evening and for cooking over with the tripods you can hire from the shop. Small shop but well stocked with essentials you may have forgotten. Also lots of local produce for sale too, from beer to apple juice! Can’t recommend it enough, we look forward to going back again!

  38. A little camping gem!!!

Everything about this site impressed us! It was excellent value for money, had immaculate facilities, and all staff on site were friendly and helpful. The coffee van was a lovely bonus and the products sold were not a rip off!! Our friends have already booked for later this year and we will definitely return. Even the dog wants to come back with us, WOOF!!!! Love the camp fire and all the camping utensils available to loan for a small fee. Everyone respected the rules and had full respect for their fellow campers. LOVE IT!!!!!!

  39. Great little campsite for beginners

Great second camping trip to the hideaway @baxby manor. Excellent facilities and very clean. As beginners to camping it was fantastic to have everything we needed and close together. Fantastic and safe for our 3 year old. Will definitely be back next year

  40. We’ll be back

Well designated plots, environmentally friendly and lovely facilities. Loved the vintage caravan in the morning and the local produce in the shop. Our favourite part was being able to have a campfire and hire the tripods for cooking.

  41. Beautiful site

Stayed at the hideaway a few times before & love the site, it’s always peaceful, really well maintained & just a beautiful site in general, everything is so well thought out there from the pitch layouts to the items in the onsite shop, would come back again & again & definitely recommend

  42. Fantastic!

We love coming to the Hideaway and have already booked our holiday for next year. if you want to soak up nature, have a roaring camp fire and relax this is the place for you! The vintage caravan selling “proper coffee” and home made croissants is a favourite for all of us but get there early there’s always a queue! we love the fact that the cars are parked away from the pitches so all the little darlings can run around in complete safety. My only gripe would be that the showers can get a bit wet in the drying / dressing area so it can be a bit of a struggle keeping pyjama bottoms and socks dry but hey-ho your camping!!!!! The staff are always friendly and helpful, the site is clean and there’s lots of places to visit, National trust members in particular. I would say that if you come to the Hideaway once, you will return!

  43. Brilliant night away

We had a great stay in the hobbit house, we had researched the facilities available at the site so we knew what to pack. The fire pit cooking was a big hit and the kids loved toasting marshmallows. The facilities were lovely, warm and clean. The coffee can in the morning was great, especially with it being a crisp morning. The only thing we struggled with was lighting the fire in the hobbit house, when we spoke to our neighbours they also struggled. It was lighting but going out after approx 20mins!

  44. Yet another fantastic stay!!

This was our 4th visit to the Hideaway and it still continues to impress. Barney and his staff are friendly and welcoming and keep the facilities spotless. The secluded quiet location, real campfires and getting back to nature with just a touch of luxury (the toilets have won awards!) are some of the many reasons we’ll be visiting again next year.

  45. Hobbit World

Another fantastic stay at the Hideaway but this time in a hobbit pod. Fantastic adventure for the kids and so cosy and warm inside with the wood burner! Everything you need- beds, plates, cups and even a camping stove. All the facilities are immaculate and staff so friendly and helpful. Really nice site that feels away from it all. Would definitely recommend.

  46. A gem of a site

Lovely big pitches with fire pit on each one, great very clean facilities. Only thing that I think it’s missing is a small park for the kids. We will be back though.

  47. Great site

The only place we could find local to us that allowed campfires. Perfect set up, great facilities, our kids loved getting back to basics – not a gadget in sight!! Barney’s a top bloke – would have no hesitation in returning to this site and have already recommended it to a number of friends.

  48. Amazing place

Stayed before, will stay again. Impeccably clean and well ran, eco friendly and without the noise and clutter of other sites. Barney is a credit to his industry.

  49. Campfire magic

It was brilliant to stay on a site where you could enjoy a campfire. My little one loved it. The facilities were nice and clean and we appreciated not being surrounded by parked cars. Nice friendly site and great that little ones had lots of space to play.

  50. Love this place

Camped here a couple of years ago then stayed in the new hobbit houses this year. Absolutely love both!!! Cooking on the campfire is so special especially for the kids. Love the site layout. Spotless facilities and fantastic little shop with all you need. Love the caravan selling well needed coffee and pastries in a morning. If you hit your stay right you can even get pizzas from her and shop from the travelling butcher and baker certain days of the weekend … would be great if these options were on offer a bit more in the week during holidays for day 3/4 when your fresh food starts running low (unless you are organised enough to have an electric hook up with fridge 😜). Love the simplicity of this place, and the surrounding areas are beautiful. Only thing that would top this place off would be a play area or even forest school type play area (make it in keeping with the eco theme) for the kids. There is a smashing play area in the village, but having one on site would be perfect so the kids can play independently. We tell everyone about this place. We love it and will be back. Hopefully one day even trying the new tree house if there is ever a weekend available 😍

  51. Excellent site

A beautifully relaxing campsite. We enjoy coming to stay here every year. Lovely pitch size and location as well as the use if the firepit. This year we explored beningburgh hall whilst staying at the site. We will definitely be returning next year.

  52. Hobbit house

My girls loved living in the Hobbit house and by far their best bit was staying up late with a fire lit in the fire pit, toasting marshmallows under the stars. They loved the freedom of being on a site where cars didn’t go onto the pitch spaces (great to have wheelbarrows to transport things from your site to your allocated car parking space).

  53. Lovely secluded campsite

Absolutely loved this site. It was our first family trip and we loved it. The children didn’t want to leave! Spotless toilets and shower rooms. Everything was so clean. Other facilities were fab too. Potwash room and drying room so clean. Also access to a fridge and freezer which was really helpful during our stay. Onsite shop was very reasonably proced and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. We will definitely return and are booking for next year. So many places to visit nearby which is great for families and Easingwold has a fantastic playground for children. The no noise between 11-7 is adhered too. It is a tranquil park which allows fires where you can stargaze as there is no light pollution.

  54. Lovely stay in the adults only section

Great place, the facilities are very clean and the shop is well resourced. There is also a caravan on site that sells tea/coffee and breakfast on some days. We stayed in the adults only section which was really secluded and had its own fire pit

  55. Hobbit House Experience

Grandchildren were amazed at first sight of what the grandaughter called a Hobbit Hole. The 4 of us had a wonderful stay. It was quite spacious to what I expected , more than enough room . The site was again lovely and very clean Well Done

  56. Great facilities on site

Pleasant stay at the Hideaway which has changed a lot since our last stay a few years ago. Enjoyed having the fire pit next to our tent. Great shower block, great idea having shoe covers, if only everyone read the sign! Handy having access to a fridge, especially when non-electric tent pitch. Would return!

  57. Even Better Second Time.

We like the fact the site dies not like loud music or any noise after eleven, the site is well kept, remarkably so after all the dry weather we have had this year. We love tha fact we can cook on an open fire without the need to take a bbq, we only cooked on gas at breakfast time, as I said the other meals we made were all outside. The facilities are kept as clean as possible, encouraging campers to take off footware or put a plastic protector on really does help and also means they are not constantly cleaning them when you are wanting to use them. Very friendly staff nothing you ask for is not carried out with a yes we will sort and also with as smile.

  58. Secluded camping

We booked a three night stay in the adults only secluded pitch at the bottom of the site. The pitch was some way from the designated parking space so a lot of journeys from and to the car which was hard work even with the provision of a four wheeled cart. The path to the pitch was quite overgrown and in need of the overhanging branches being given a trim as it was we got wetter than we could have been brushing against the leaves. The pitch was a little uneven but all in all a good site next to the stream we enjoyed being away from other campers. The site is in danger of being overun by Hymalayan balsam. We would think about staying here again and have already recommended it to friends. The facilities are excellent (could do with more wash up sinks though) great drying room, brilliant showers and waste disposal.

  59. Helpful staff

We hadn’t booked and although they were really busy the lovely lady on reception (sorry can’t remember her name) put herself out and found a solution so we could stay 2 nights on the same pitch. They were all so helpful. It was so lovely we even extended our stay for another night ! Kids loved playing on the tree swing in the beck 👍

  60. Jason P

Fantastic little campsite, toilets and shower facilities were of a very high standard. We stayed in a family eco pod which was great and we will definitely be coming back.

  61. Perfect introduction to camping

My daughter is about to start school so we wanted a last minute break with one of her friends and their family. The booking process was easy and confirmation clear. The fact that you could view the pitches available made things easy and we were able to get 2 pitches together with a great spot near the facilities. Kids happy, parents happy. We’re hoping to return very soon!

  62. Very relaxing stay

My partner and I, thought we should give glamping a try, we researched many sites and the hideaway looked like the one for us, how right we were, the pod was beautiful and clean, the location was fantastic, the amenities were first class, the staff were very friendly and helpful, would definitely stay again and have allready recommended to family and friends.

  63. Stay in a hobbit house

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baxby, we found the site with ease and loved the car being close to the hobbit house (my partner who had to carry everything appreciated that)! The welcome had lovely and helpful from the staff and we found the wash facilities great and clean. We walked to the local pub which was lovely. We will return in the future.

  64. Chilled out 5* camping

We loved staying at The Hideaway and will certainly return. The campsite has been thoughtfully designed so that it doesn’t feel as though you are in a field with lots of people. The small clusters of camping areas between trees, shrubs and some longer grass lends itself to a more intimate camping experience. The fire pits in the ground for each pitch are a great addition – who doesn’t want a real fir e when they’re camping? The toilets and showers are the best we have encountered in many years of camping and were always immaculately clean, even in peak season. The rule of shoes off or wearing plastic overshoes is legend! Why have other camp sites not thought of this? No outdoor shoes results in sparkly clean washing facilities. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are just the right amount of rules that everyone appeared to respect and adhere to during our stay. You’ve probably gathered that The Hideaway is our new favourite campsite!

  65. Best camp site

Stayed here last weekend . Had a brilliant time . I have gone camping for the last 10 years . And this is the best camp site I have stayed on . They are so helpful and friendly. Love u can have a camp fire and bbq that is what camping is about. Only one thing I would say is think they could do with a little play park for kids but everything else is perfect . Will be back

  66. Backpacker Mike

I loved this place. The ethos of the site suited me perfectly. It was really peaceful, great to see the recycling facilities, though do try & re-introduce composting for food waste. Perhaps the site shop could also stock a small range of fruit & veg. As a backpacker without transport it was a bit of a trek to get these. I’d certainly return. I’m just sorry I had to leave before the Friday pizza night! My fellow campers were also great. Everybody respected the tranquility of the place. Fabulous.

  67. Excellent campsite

We stayed at the Hideaway as a family and on the whole thoroughly enjoyed our holiday there. The facilities are by far the nicest we have ever used, warm extremely spacious and clean and even though the campsite was busy we rarely queued. The strict 11-7 no noise policy was obeyed by everyone while we were on site, I’m not sure whether we just had polite neighbours or if the prevalence of so many warning signs around the site were responsible but whichever it was we certainly had some very quiet nights which we appreciated. There are some fantastic facilities on the campsite, the vintage caravan serves wonderful hot chocolates and coffees and cookies, fresh stonebaked pizzas were available one evening and a butcher visited twice a week. I can thoroughly recommend the butcher, in fact, the meats were so good we brought some home with us. The butcher is based in Easingwold which is only 10 mins away if you need more supplies during your stay. You could also order bread for next day delivery. There was a fridge on site as well which makes life a lot easier if you don’t have an electric pitch. The only slight negatives, and they are slight, were the fact that the welcome to the site was not overly friendly and that the pitch boundaries were not obvious. We booked quite a large pitch and were told that we would be told to move our tent if it encroached on another pitch but when we came to to put up our tent it was impossible to see where one pitch ended and another began. Perhaps the pitches could be marked out by small stakes in the ground or simply by leaving a strip on unmowed grass between pitches? Perhaps we were just more conscious of it than we needed to be but some simple boundaries would have removed any worry. On the whole a fabulous site and we would stay again without hesitation but for the fact that we like to explore a new part of the country when we go holiday. I would happily recommend to anyone considering the site.

  68. The hideaway

Loved staying in the pod at baxby Manor, great for young families or camping novices like me! Be great if there was a nearby play area for the kids though, there’s so much land there it would be a great added bonus! Really enjoyed our time here though was great, all the wash facilities were immaculate too!

  69. A quiet, peaceful site

We found this campsite after looking for somewhere to camp in the North East of the country. The website for The Hideaway instantly caught our eye and, upon reading the first page, were drawn into reading every page on the site. After that, we were persuaded to book for 7 nights in The Sanctuary – the quiet, “Adults only, strictly no children section of the site”. Upon arrival, we met Barney, the owner, who quickly registered us and told us where to park – unusually, The Hideaway doesn’t let cars park next to the pitches. Instead, each pitch has a dedicated parking space and include a wheelbarrow or cart for you to transfer things from car to pitch. Our pitch was 3 spots into The Santuary so well away from the main site. Our tent was pitched with plenty of room left on all sides and a purpose built fire pit at one end. For the fire pit, we were able to hire a tripod and grill for £5 with a £20 deposit, returned if it was brought back clean. The facilities were immaculate with a drying room, a pot wash area, and toilet/shower area. In an effective way to help keep the areas clean, outdoor shoes weren’t allowed in the shower area and shoe covers were provided. Showers were warm and powerful. We will definitely be back to The Hideaway, this time experiencing the other ways of staying – Hobbit Houses, especially.

  70. 2 nights 2 adults 2 boys all on a hobbit adventure. Brilliant

Relaxed atmosphere. Excellent facilities. All the rules are there for a reason and make your stay enjoyable for all. Nothing at all other than nature for kids. What more could anyone want?!

  71. Perfect Stay

We had such a great time at The Hideaway. Unfortunately our van broke down and was stuck in someone else’s parking spot. How embarrassing! The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. Apart from that disaster, the site was beautiful, the facilities were perfect, love the pizzas and pastries from the vintage caravan. Such a lovely peaceful site, we will definitely be visiting again.

  72. Great Canpsite

I spent a couple of nights at The Hideaway with my kids and some friends. The pitch sizes are all really generous and all come with their own fire pit making evening warmth and entertainment very easy. The washing facilities exceeded my expectations and the pot washing area was big enough and always clean. The shop and reception area were open at good times of the day and well stocked. Being able to hire a tripod to put over the fire was a fab bonus. In the morning pastry’s and coffee are available to buy from the caravan by reception – a really lovely touch! All in all we had a fantastic time and we will definitely return for another short break.

  73. Family stay

We stayed in the wonderful Hobbit houses; they were perfectly equipped and spotlessly clean for our arrival! The kids loved it! The only thing missing is perhaps a children’s playpark/area onsite where they could meet and make friends. The toilet facility is kept extremely clean and we enjoyed the breakfast van in the morning!

  74. A perfect holiday

This was just me and my 10 year old daughter on our first proper camping trip.. over the years I have spent many £1000’s in the attempt to have the perfect family holiday, with varying degrees of success. It is a joy to say that she didn’t want to leave and we had our best holiday ever. The hideaway is a bit of magic. A haven of peace and a place to reconnect and re energise. Can not recommend it enough.

  75. Great camping experience.

We loved this campsite for its eco friendly approach. It was quiet. It was really clean. No litter. Friendly and very helpful staff. Excellent facilities. I highly recommend this site.

  76. Trees and tranquility in the sanctuary section

This was a beautiful Hideaway stay for me and my husband. We had a pitch in the ‘sanctuary’ section (T30) which meant we had a secluded, green, peaceful pitch. The pitch was big, you could easily fit at least 2 tents in it. The downside is carrying things from the car to the pitch but the site provide a trolley to help ferry things. The fire pit was great and we loved the ecologically friendly methods of recycling and tree growth. The local village has a bar/restaurant Plum and partridge, whose menu is a bit la-di-da but does a discount for campers and the staff are pretty relaxed. The campsite is all flat, and also offers pods and hobbit-holes. We chose this location because we were booked to go to Go Ape in Dalby forest which is 35 miles away. Also the local town of Easingwold, about 3 miles, is picturesque, had a market and most provisions you need.

  77. 5 go Hobbiting!

Having originally booked a bell tent we were pleasantly surprised to be informed that they had now changed them to Hobbit Huts! They lived up to their name- cute wooden houses with round doors, wooden seating & fire pits perfect for cooking on! The location of them was perfect so you felt a bit like you were wild camping but only 2 mins walk from the cleanest toilet blocks & pot wash I’ve ever seen on a camp site. It was so perfect we didn’t even leave the site on the Sunday except to go to the stream, a 3 mins walk, where our girls made the most of the rope swing into the water Will def go back, either in the huts or take a tent as the pitches looked great too. Nothing better than cooking on an open fire (try the bacon from the shop – it is amazing!) & getting away from it all for a couple of days only 45 mins from home Thank you Barney & the team x

  78. Delivered on all promises

We chose The Hideaway due to their promises for peace and quiet and strict no amplified noise policy. The ‘Back to Nature’ also appealed as we wanted to take our kids away to a place without electricity or tech and for them to enjoy building fires, toasting marshmallows, exploring and adventure. The Hideaway delivered in all counts; We’ll be back!

  79. Great site

Loved this site and will return, lots of space between campers and quiet after 11pm. Visit by butcher is well worth a visit and the pizzas are a nice change too. Only thing we missed was a dog walk and area of grass eg for football for kids. Otherwise it’s great

  80. An oasis of peace and quiet

As responsible travellers we chose The Hideaway not only because of its location, but also because of their environmental credentials, and the fact that they are ‘dog friendly’. The check in process was smooth, the site was very clean and tidy and the showers and washing up/laundry facilities were some of the best I have seen on any campsite. The showers were always hot, whatever time of day you went in. The pitches are well spaced with a strictly enforced 6m gap between pitches and an 11pm noise curfew. I can honestly say that we didn’t have a single grumble during the three days that we stayed there, and would definitely use it again if we were ever back in the area.

  81. Hidden gem

Absolutely beautiful place, gorgeous surroundings, quiet and peaceful and totally in love with the fact that you can sit by a real camp fire into the night which nowadays you can’t put a price on anymore!! We loved our hobbit pod and the kids had the best time! Being able to purchase a fresh coffee in the mornings and bacon and BBQ meat from the butcher on site was an added bonus, which cooked on the fire added to the taste even more! So lucky to have found this place and will DEFINITELY be back soon!

  82. Little getaway

Last weekend I had a lovely little get away with my partner, we stayed in a pod and it was clean a nice little fire pit. I’ve already recommended to friends and family.

  83. Great little site.

Was here from Monday 30th July till Saturday 4th August. Great camp site, we were in the sanctuary t26, could see and hear kids next door, but did not spoil our stay. I even managed to get a bit of fish in, in the little beck that ran beside our pitch, I only had a few minnows but good fun. A local butcher brings meat to site for bbqs once or twice a week and the on site staff are very friendly and helpful, Friday night they even cook pizzas to order. The toilet and shower block are very modern and clean. The shower cubilices large too.

  84. A Gem of a Campsite with faultless facilities.

A beautifully laid out camping environment with no cars at pitch-side, meant holidaying with two Nine year old boys and an 18 month old baby was relaxed and enjoyed more by having a safer area to play. The boys spent time playing in the stream and we all loved the fire pits provided at each pitch, we cooked our meals on it and enjoyed a log fire in the evenings. Morning breakfasts of Fresh Coffee/Hot Chocolate and Croissants was a welcome addition from the Vintage van. The shop and all other facilities were incredibly clean and well stocked and as a Disabled camper I appreciated the ‘Accessible’ facilities and the time spent to provide them. Everything has been thought through and the owners have created a beautiful, calm and well run site with Nature being their guide. I feel like the site has grown with the campers, who enjoy it with the meadow grass and carefully set out pitches give an opportunity for privacy. I’ve camped in many places which I love and have to say this site has made me want to return to this calm and spiritually atmospheric haven…

  85. Another great stay at TheHideaway Baxby Manor

We visited The Hideaway 3yrs ago and stayed in a Bell Tent and it was fantastic. When we saw the new Hobbit houses we knew it was time for another visit. Amazing place with very very clean facilities. Big on recycling also which is great to see. It’s a great base with Thirsk and York not far away. Great place with great staff. Highly recommended

  86. erfect camping experience

excellent campsite, very well ran lovely and clean and friendly, lots to do near by but also nice to relax on site for the day.. loved the vintage caravan selling coffee and pastries in a morning and pizza on a friday night a well stocked shop plus having a fridge on site was very handy.. will definitely be returning as it’s one of my favourite campsites iv been to..

  87. fly’s & bonfires

we recently stayed in a hobbit house, which is really a glorified shed upon arrival we were met by 200+ flys, we attempted to buy some fly spray but were told its not sold on site but they would get some from the house and bring it – waited 4 days & it still didn’t arrive can’t fault the set up of the site, its spotless, but be prepared to smell like a bonfire for the whole of your stay I’d recommend it if you like camping

    • Thanks for the feedback Leanne.
Glamping takes on many forms, most are nothing like our Hobbit Houses (in fact we are the only ones in the country and possibly the world that has this design!) Glamping can be a Shepherds Hut, a Canvas Tent, a converted boat, or a Treehouse. Glamping (Glamorous camping simply means something more than a tent.
I’m afraid we cannot do much about the flies and wasps etc, afraid its all part and parcel of rural camping and glamping! Im sorry you were told we’d give you some fly spray and it did not materialise; however no one asked me for any…?
It’s not camping without a proper campfire and as we are one of the very few sites that allows them it is inevitable that most will have a fire…it does help keep the flies away tho…!
      Barney (Owner)

  88. Loved it

We stayed in a hobbit hut and we loved it, will definitely be returning with the tent next time, lovely pub just up the road called plum and partridge, facilities spotless on site, staff all friendly, can’t wait to go back

  89. As close to wild camping as you can get but with all the luxury to hand

My kids (12 & 10) and I love this site, The long natural grasses and trees throughout the site make a refreshing change to the flat lawns where everyone overlooks each other. But for us, the real attraction is the ability to have open fires to cook over and to sit around chatting as darkness falls.

  90. Very happy

I have recently stayed at the hideaway with my partner and his dog, very warm and welcoming staff. Set in the most beautiful location very happy to help always. Would highly recommend this place to anyone! And can’t wait to return.

  91. Gorgeous hidden gem

What a beautiful natural camping site. We loved how peaceful the site was and how secluded we were in the adults only section. Just what we were looking for

  92. Few nights away

Great few nights away in the hobbit hut. Clean site toilets and facility’s hobbit hut was lovely spaciouce there was quite a few kids staying in the hobbit huts but was no trouble hardly noticed them or noise at night was quite peaceful great place to stay would recommend.

  93. amily stay

We’re a family of 4, with 2 active boys aged 8 and 11. We absolutely loved our first stay at the Hideaway and it’s now one of our favourite campsites. The site is definitely set up to cater to the more relaxing side of camping, with lots of segregation and meadow. I think the boys preferred it with a few of the pitches empty so there was more space for them to play. The facilities are excellent; we loved the fire pits and onsite coffee and pastries. Unfortunately the weather didn’t lend itself to barbecue so we didn’t use the butcher. The shop is top notch, with excellent local produce and allowed an emergency air bed purchase. The wash facilities are good; lots of hot water and no queuing. I also liked the ban on shoes, so no annoying grass in the shower. There’s absolutely loads to do within a drive and we had a great evening meal at the Carlton Inn a couple of miles away. York is spectacular with enough to keep you busy for weeks and we had really fun days out in Whitby and Lightwater Valley. Great site!

  94. Great stay

A lovely campsite with friendly owner and staff. Great location for going out for the day or staying local and exploring the countryside. Booked again already 😃

  95. A little piece of heaven.

We have been to the hideaway a couple of times now and always go back. The facilities are always really clean, the staff are super friendly. They site is rural which we love, theres a little stream that runs along the side of the campsite which is great in summer! we love that we can have camp fires on the pitch. Overall the campsite is great, we go at least once a year now. plenty of things to do around the surrounding area and plenty of sight seeing.

  96. Quiet relaxing stay

Our most relaxing camping break yet – no noise after 11, not having to listen to other peoples music during the day, decent spacing between pitches, dogs on leads, clean facilities, friendly helpful staff………….perfect

  97. Birthday break

Just got back from staying at the hobbit houses ! Excellent stay and great value for money, staff were all friendly, clean facilities throughout. Overall lovely few days

  98. Excellent campsite hidden away

Loved this campsite for its large pitches and fire pits. The wash facilities were really clean although some people obviously couldn’t read the notices that say take off your outdoor shoes or put on the overshoes provided!! There’s a fabulous drying room for wet towels/shoes. The shop is a little gem selling all sorts of things you didn’t realise you needed from children’s toys to Eco fire lighters to gin, ice creams, fresh eggs, headache tablets etc etc. Please don’t take your kids if they can’t be quiet between 11pm – 7am as this is the campsite rule which again some chose not to follow………apart from that it’s fab.

  99. Peaceful park, everything thought of.

This was our third stay at the Hideaway with three generations of our family. We love the peaceful location and the chance to enjoy a camp fire in the evenings. The washroom facilities are great, and the pot wash and drying rooms make everything easy. We had a couple of really nice local walks around the area based on routes supplied at the campsite which gave a lot of information about what to see. Barney and his staff were as helpful and friendly as ever.

  100. Holiday stay

Lovely place to stay. Very peaceful. Lovely to have a camp fire with each pod and the caravan that is there for breakfast is a lovely touch. Will be back again.

  101. Another enjoyable stay

We came back to Baxby for the third time and again enjoyed our stay. The kids still love the site although they’re teenagers now. We stayed in a Hobbit House due to a lack of carrying space for a tent etc. and found it very comfortable, as we’d hoped for the price. We would certainly consider the site and the accommodation again, perhaps at a quieter time of year when we could enjoy the log burner and have a bit more spare cash to spend in the pub. The facilities, while still very clean and of a high standard, felt rather busier than in recent years, but that might just be a result of having camped at an excellently equipped Dutch site recently. But overall, a lovely and welcoming place to spend a few days.

  102. Top Notch Camping

A lovely atmosphere on this site. Very well designed to allow tranquility and privacy whilst allowing the kids some freedom. Facilities were of an extremely high standard, would def recommend. Barney and co one work v hard to maintain the excellent standard of this site, def recommend!

  103. Lovely family campsite

This was a lovely campsite. We only choose sites which allow campfires, and this had great fire pits. The facilities were spotless, warm, and showers hot. The best camping bathrooms we have come across. Good washing facilities. Pitches are very well spaced out. Stream runs along the edge of the campsite. Far enough away from the main road to ensure peace & quiet, but still easy to access the local areas and get to the Motorway. Nice focus on recycling and other ‘green’ approaches to camping.

  104. Super site and facilities

Lovely site, great facilities and spotlessly clean Pitches well spaced and fire-pits on all Nice and quiet with loads to do and see locally

  105. Hideaway 2 day breakaway

Another fantastic stay at the hideaway! We will return again next year for sure. My family love the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. This is our third visit and great that campers respects the important rules of the park which makes the hideaway a cut way above the rest.

  106. Would have scored them a Ten if they had made one change…

The Hideaway Baxby Manor is a great little campsite, not overcrowded with ample pitches allocated. The washing facilities are right up there with the best and the staff are as helpful as you could wish for… I do have one gripe with their setup…no cars on the grass! Now I appreciate why they have this rule but let me explain. The site provides wheelbarrows for you to use to get all your equipment from your allocated parking bay (Unless you drive a smart car…it’s too narrow) to you pitch location, for us it was about 50 yards away. But I’m disabled and this was the cause of some major problems, So if we had been allowed to drive on the grass only to unload and load up once we were on our way this would have made a world of difference. If you are after a quieter place to stop…this is great.

    • Hi, thanks for the feedback.

Although due to the terrain it is not physically possible to access pitches with vehicles, when you choose your pitch online via the website you can choose a pitch that is right next to (less than 10m) from the parking area and your allocated space.

  107. Perfect in every way

We stayed for a couple of nights in July this year. It was our daughter’s first camping trip and she loved every minute of it. The site was quiet, clean and tidy and there was plenty of space between pitches. The on-site facilities were superb; a well stocked shop, washroom, drying room and shower block. The pizza van on Friday night was perfect and the butcher van on Saturday meant we could stock up on bbq supplies for the evening. All in all, a fantastic stay. We will most certainly be back!

  108. Happy Camping

A great site, perfect for family holiday. Highlight for our children is being allowed a real campfire, so many sites do not allow. A pleasure to watch kids having fun, making up games and their own entertainment. Lots of lovely walks in area, mountain biking at Sutton Bank, York a drive away. This site attracts a different kind of camper, respectful and considerate of fellow campers. Barney runs a tight ship to the benefit of all. We’all be back 😊

  109. Fabulous campsite

A must for all seasoned and new campers. Extremely clean and tidy site which attracts campers who are respectful To others and the environment. Excellent clean facilities. Large plots and We love the fire 🔥 pits. Home baked treats from Liza’s onsite Vintage Kitchen is an added bonus. Couldn’t speak any higher of this place, Go! X

  110. Amazing

Amazing place. Almost don’t want to say too much as Will spoilt the amazing atmosphere if everyone were to know about it! We love our weekends here. Recharged and relaxed. Thank you barny!

  111. Back to nature

Excellent site for relaxing Great to be able to have a fire pit to sit round at night Very clean and environmentally friendly We love it here

  112. would reccomend this site for camping

baxby mannor was a great camp site .. the manager was very polite and helpfull..the site its self was very looked after really clean and well presented.. the owner has put alot of effort into hes camp site.. the showers and toilets were really clean ..so peacefull and quiet had built in campfire pits big spaces for tent pitching not in an excluded area u had space and tents were not on top of each other ..would recomend this site to people who want to get away and have a chilled few days ..really peacefull would come back to baxby again 😊

  113. Lovely campsite!

This was a lovely campsite! So glad I came across it! It was beautifully quiet and peaceful and far from any traffic noise. We picked the location as it was pretty close to flamingo land, but also found it ideal for visiting York as well. The only downside was that a wedding was being set up on our last day which was quite disruptive and ruined the ambience, which we had experienced the rest of the week, so next time I book I will check whether a wedding is booked and whether it is near our pitch. Despite this, it was still a lovely holiday. Would definitely go back and have already been recommending it.

  114. Perfect site in every way.

Fantasticly placed pitches, super clean facilities and staff that go that extra mile to make your stay even more enjoyable. Oh, there is also a campsite cat! How amazing is that!!?! Also, the 11-7 quiet site policy works a treat enabling everyone to get a great nights sleep in beautiful peace and quiet. I’d really recommend this site! Probably the best we’ve ever stayed in.

  115. Baxby manor

Fantastic two night stay with my two kids, loved how safe if felt, the proximity of my tent to the stream, the long grass for playing in, and the effort Barney went to so we could watch the footy!

  116. Our Visit to the Hideaway

Since our first visit the year it opened it has over the seasons progressed and matured to become one of thr premier camp sites i the Yorkshire area.

  117. Lovely

We came for a weekend with my sister and her family and didn’t leave the campsite as it was so beautiful. Excellent washing facilities, tent pitches had lots of space and places for children to play, and lots of natural habitats and wildlife areas. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

  118. Beautiful, peaceful site.

I camped alone for one night as part of a weekend travelling in the area. It was so peaceful and the sanctuary plot was exactly what I needed. It felt very secure and the sound of the brook behind my plot was very relaxing. The toilet/shower facilities are beautifully clean. I was a bit disappointed that the little caravan wasn’t open that weekend as I was relying on it for my breakfast! If you are staying in hot weather in a sanctuary plot remember to take insect repellent. There are quite a few biting flies/midges, but I guess that’s to be expected when you set up camp in natural woodland. The fire pit is a great bonus. Byland Abbey is free to walk around and very close by. Well worth a visit. I also stopped at Helmsley Walled Garden, which is beautiful in July.

  119. Spotless facilities. 6m specified between pitches and that’s what it is, no encroachment on other pitches. Although we didn’t have a fire, because of the 30 degree heat, the facility was at each pitch. Lovely little site.

  120. We have been tenting for years and this is probably the best site we have stayed on. Over the years, I’ve found that some campsites are deterring tents in favour of caravans. This is not the case with the Hideaway. The only negative was having to wheelbarrow our stuff from the car to the pitch. We’re used to parking next to our tent. I can understand why this is the case. We’re in our 60’s and on a hot day this was hard work. Other than that, the toilet/shower block was immaculate. I liked the idea of leaving parts of the site overgrown to encourage wildlife. The shop was good although pricey. There is no shop in Husthwaite, only a very fancy pub/restaurant. As we are retired, we took advantage of the midweek discounts (40% off 4 nights) which made it exceptional value. All in all, a fantastic site and we’ll be back.

  121. Just fantastic

Excellent. Relaxing. You feel like you’re in the wild with brilliant facilities very close by. My perfect camping trip. I really felt like the camper was in the heart of every service and the aesthetics are perfect for the surroundings and married so well with the whole experience. I especially loved the book exchange, the wild patch separating the rows of tents, no cars next to tents, the flowers in the wash block, the warm showers and the cleanest facilities I’ve ever experienced, the chairs and table outside the shop and the shop with everything we didn’t realise we needed! Thank you

  122. Camping the way it should be.

Perfect stay on this wonderful campsite. Love the fact there were no big vans. Really loved the pitches, longer grass around the camp offering an element of privacy. Especially loved the fire pit and the Sanctuary. Wonderful village and people. Best campsite I’ve ever stayed on. Cute Hobbit Houses. Facilities are fab. Lovely cosy and warm shower/toilet room. Just one small thing, the recycle bins are really dirty and could do with a regular wash down. Not nice pushing items through the dirty bristles.

  123. Third time we’ve visited

We visit with family and friends every year. They’re massive camping fans, but I’m not, however, The Hideaway makes the ordeal more than tolerable 🙂 Loads of space, no one kicking off into the early hours, decent toilets and showers, no complaints whatsoever – I imagine we will be back next year.

  124. Perfectly different peaceful & charming

A wonderful location set amongst trees & nature. Peaceful location not too far away from local amenities if required. Different as set within boarders of wild grass with lawned pitches, fire pits provided & tripods available at tiny fee. Very accommodating staff. Pitch perfect site. I’ll be back!

  125. lovely site with great facilities

the site was not full as we went mid week on a very generous price deal, so it was ahead on points before we even pitched. to our delight it was a fab site that due to it’s lay out, felt small but in actual fact has over 50 pitches. The lay out is genius as it allows you a sense of privacy and promotes a quiet & calm vibe. the bathroom facilities were bob on & kept very clean & the pot wash/ freezer / fridge facility was again ideal & kept very well. the little shop has basics without rip off prices, quite refreshing that & barney was often on hand for a chat & any info you needed. we also loved the campfire facility on every pitch. all in all a lovely site that we will definitely return to when we are visiting that part of yorkshire. it is also really handy for loads of good places to visit.

  126. Great spacious plots

Stayed twice in the “Sanctuary” and the privacy and peaceful setting are fantastic. All pitches have a fire pit which is an added bonus. Well done to the Hideaway for its recycling too. I truly cannot fault this campsite and have plans to return soon and would recommend to anyone.

  127. Excellent site

Fantastic site peacefully located and good space between sites one thing that would of been nice would be a seating provision at each pitch we only have a small car and taking a table and chairs was not an option a few pitches with bench tables would of been the cream on the already delicious cake. Thank you see you again soon

  128. Short stay

Stayed for three nights with our two dogs in The Sanctuary. Very happy with all facilities and our pitch. Would return to the campsite. Would have preferred electric hook up in this area.

  129. Perfect place to stay !!!

What a great place to stay facilities are immaculate, lovely and peaceful staff are so friendly, lovely chillingly place to stay would recommend it.

  130. Best site in Yorkshire

Amazing location, quiet and peaceful, best facilities – better than home! flat pitches next to babbling brook, friendly staff, what more can you ask for. Great dining pub in the village. We camped but the Hobbit holes look inviting for when we bring our granddaughter.

  131. Peaceful Setting

The Hideaway lives up to its name. We visited during a weekday and found it to be an ideal place to chill. The toilet blocks are probably the best we have ever used on a camp site.

  132. Great if you have children

Site, staff and facilities were great, however, there were lots of families with children (some of which did not appear to have adequate supervision e.g. running through pitches at high speed when hot BBQ’s and fire pits were burning and thinking it’s ok to use the long grass between pitches as a toilet!) We were there at the weekend so this would probably not be an issue during term time mid week. Beautiful village within walking distance and lovely circular walk from the site

  133. The Hideaway – a truly awesome place especially TE5

Sadly our stay was cut short this weekend due to being involved in a nasty car accident in the local area – we were all gutted 🙁 The Hideaway is an amazing place, i would recommend it anyone. The facilities, the staff, the location, the pitch fantastic. Camp fires – perfect . Cooking over the camp fire – awesome. The “quality” of guests – give great peace of mind. Campsite standards / expectatrions are fabulous.

  134. Excellant stay at a hidden gem

Absolutely love this place, nice size pitches, fire pit for each, excellant facilities and spotlessly clean. Shop is well stocked with essentials and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Love the fact no cars allowed on the grass too, makes for an excellant campsite. Only thing I think that needs adding now is a playground and it’s top of the list for me, well done everyone at The Hideaway, keep up the fab work

  135. Lovely

We visited The Hideaway a couple of weekends ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Facilities are excellent and pitches are large for all sizes of tents. The camp site is clean and kept in excellent condition. Lovely surrounding for those who wants to enjoy the Yorkshire moors. Definitely a place to recommend and revisit.

  136. Amazing

I was so excited about my holiday before we arrived as it looked amazing and I wasn’t disappointed on arrival. Katie and Barney were polite and helpful when needed. The facilities were of very high standard my only concern is when visitors didn’t follow the rules and ended up traipsing grass into the washrooms etc. I love the ethos of the camp and the vibe which reflects on the friendliness of the other guests to. We are booked to go back already!!

  137. Very impressed

A lovely setting a beautifully laid out camp site. The kids loved to cook over an open fire. A perfect place for a cycle camping trip from York. We will be back if you’ll have us. Many thanks

  138. First time at The Hideaway

We are used to either wild camping or more basic camping in the Peak District so were dubious whether this would ruin the experience having so many facilities, however, that drying room certainly came in handy after we got drenched in a thunderstorm and the fab shower room was a luxury in the morning. Best moments of the weekend were scrambling up the embankment to catch the sunset and finding the honesty cafe on a walk we did. Father’s Day lunch at the local pub was absolutely delicious and with the 20% off – just amazing!! Thanks for having us Barney 🙂

  139. The best campsite I’ve ever styed on

If you are looking to party all night, this place is NOT for you, if you are looking for a cool, chilled out, safe, clean, happy place to go camping with a bit of style then it is. Lovely surroundings, loads of wildlife, the cleanest facilities on the planet and chilled out staff make this place brilliant. We will definitely be back and have already recommended it to friends.

  140. The Hideaway – hidden gem

My favourite campsite! Large pitches, a fire pit on each pitch, clean and eco friendly wash rooms, lots of extra touches – a well stocked, locally supplied shop, butchers van on Saturday morning, vintage coffee van and loads of space for the kids all with friendly staff, a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Discovered a 4.5 circular walk from Husthwaite via Coxwold (via a lovely friendly pub with great food – Fauconburg Arms) to complete our weekend 🙂

  141. Family pod

We stayed in the family pod with our 2 small grandsons. They loved it, running through long grass and having the freedom to run about alover the park. It was quiet when we went as it was term time and as they are young they are also early risers. I was concerned about them waking other people, but when I asked they said they didn’t hear them. The people staying were also very friendly. We coming back maybe in a tent next time if grandkids will let us put a tent up as they are still young. We all had a great time and the 2 boys loved the pod.

  142. First time camping with a toddler

This campsite had amazing facilities, fresh coffee in the morning, firepits, large pitches, wheelbarrows for moving your gear, small river for paddling in. It was a great experience as our first time camping with our 2 year old who loved it. We’ll definitely be back!

  143. A great campsite

The campsite is lovely – a super location, impecably managed and very safe and friendly. We stayed in a Hobbit House, which was a super little place with all the basics there. The firepit was fab and I would definately recommend renting a tripod and grill for cooking. I would have liked a place to store food – just a set of shelves – as it is self catering and there was nowhere to store anything. It was quiet when we were there and all the facilities were perfect, but my only thought would be that it might not be ideal for families if it was busy as the only place to play was the grass of empty pitches. If all the pitches were full, there really wouldn’t be room to play anywhere. There are only 3 washing up sinks and 3 showers for women, so again I think it would be pretty hectic if it was busy. On the whole, I would definitely stay here again outside of the school holidays.

  144. Stayed here recently

Last minute decision to stay here so glad we did. The site was perfect we felt like we where there in our own but with the luxury of showers, toilets and electric sockets. Enjoyed a lovely bike ride in the countryside stopping of at the local pub. Would highly recommend staying here.

  145. Great campsite to get away from it all

We had a great stay in a Sanctuary pitch. Very secluded with excellent facilities. Barney was very welcoming and helpful and the shop had a good range of products. Great shower and toilet block which was very clean.

  146. Excellent camping experience

We were impressed by the large pitch sizes and that each pitch had its own fire pit. The shower/toilet block is up to date and well looked after. The only down side is that children use the toilets unsupervised. This is a criticism of parents not the camp site. Shop is well stocked for basics and you can buy fire wood and hire BBQ tripods. There is a fridge and freezer for essential items. Wifi was available but we only used it to check on the weather. There is an ‘adult only’ area comprising 5 pitches in a wooded area. May try this if we go in school holidays again. Although it seems to be in the middle of nowhere, it only takes a few minutes to get to Thirsk or Ripon. This campsite is excellent value for money.

  147. I can still smell the campfires

Lovely quiet site next to a stream, with all pitches having fire pits. Children played happily all day with others they met, we relaxed, the showers were better than most hotels I’ve stayed in, and I can still close my eyes and smell the aroma of everyone cooking over a fire in the early evening sun. We loved it!

  148. Great weekend get away

Fabulous little g weekend with family and friends. The kids played in the stream constantly and made lots of new friends. Our only comment would be that they sorely missed a field/space to play cricket/ball games on. That would have made the stay perfect! Nonetheless, plenty of hide and seek and other games were easily played. As a consequence the adults had a fabulous and relaxing time!! Lovely clean site- wonderful washing facilities – pick and mix sweets, shop, hot chocolates etc all made for a very luxurious camping stay. Thank you!

  149. Fab half term at at The Hideaway

We found the campsite by googling Campsite near York as we wanted to visit the area with our son. This was top of the result list and we can see why. Everyone was friendly, our hobbit hole was well equipped and our son enjoyed making new friends with the children around us, all of whom had been here before. We are already planning our next trip and we’ll be braving a tent next time! We particularly enjoyed the fire pit and I loved having proper toilet and shower facilities. The little shop was great to have to pick up the things we forgot. We also liked having the coffee van there although get there early if you want any of the pastries as they sell out very quickly!

  150. Perfect

A complete get away from it all – with some luxuries thrown in. Stayed in a hobbit house and loved it. Showers/toilets warm, clean and very modern. Very friendly staff. Fire pits on every pitch and a lovely atmosphere too. Not sure how it could be any better.

  151. Great Stay

Great, would recommend. Only downside was the difficulty of putting the rubbish in the bins. They are set up to post the rubbish through smallish slots which makes disposing of a bin bag full of waste quite difficult.

    • Hi Gemma. Thanks for your review.
We tell EVERYONE about the bins on arrival and that you need to use small bags. This helps to cut down on people simply throwing EVERYTHING into one large bag and it ending up in the landfill bin.
I can only assume that this important point was not passed on to you by the person who came to Reception on arrival?

  152. Short break

Lovely campsite. Well set out in small sheltered areas. Great place for quiet break to explore surrounding area. We stayed with small camper van ,pitches a good size with space between and electric hook up.

  153. Hideaway camping june 18

Pleasant enough camping park. Over rated in my opinion though. Literally nothing for kids to do whatsoever. More suited to older couples looking for peace and quiet reading a book and doing very little else. Found the request to wear overshoes in the toilet areas and cloths next to every sink a little odd. Especially with the reason being to simply make the cleaning quicker and easier for the staff. What next lawnmowers next to the pitches for you to cut the grass before you leave? I thought thats what I was paying for? Fair enough during wet conditions but not necessary when we stayed. Better parks to visit in my opinion particularly if you have kids.

    • Thank you for your feedback John.
It is a good idea to check the website before booking as it is quite clear on there that there is no Butlins-style entertainment here, we are not that sort of site.
The polite request to remove outdoor shoes etc is to keep the facilities clean for YOU, not us!
There is a lot of “natural play” for kids to do such as bug hunts, playing by or in the stream, or simply inventing their own games. We encourage parents to find these things to do with their kids rather than just dump them in an artificial play park! That is the point of The Hideaway; it’s all part of getting away from it all and discovering the world around you.

  154. Great stay at the hideaway!!

Lovely site! Beautiful location and we’re lucky to have good weather over the bank holiday (after putting up the tent in the rain!) Facilities are clean and brilliant site – will definitely stay here again!

  155. campsite review

Quiet tranquil location, generous pitch sizes. Internet worked OK near the site office. Appreciated and understood the “green” efforts to improve sustainability. The speed bumps on the approach road were needlessly abrupt and even driving over at snails pace made everything shake about and things fall out, which was annoying. Also, as ever is the case, grassy pitches tend to leave cut grass everywhere which gets on footwear which gets into the vehicle and is irritating, it would be better to have a surfaced area for each pitch and connected to the facilities by a surfaced path. That isn’t very unecological surely.

  156. Quiet family friendly site – lovely facilities

Loved the individual fire pits to each tent. Great atmosphere bbqs and toasting marshmallows at night. Lots of space between tents. No cars next to tents kept it quiet and added to the real camping feel. Nice and quiet, lovely clean facilities. Great drying room and fridge and freezer provided. Loved the retro caravan serving coffee and pastries etc for breakfast. Well stocked shop and friendly staff. Thank you!

  157. Another great stay.

We have stayed at the Hideaway several times, sleeping in bell tents, the Pods and this time the hobbit houses. The shower/bathroom facilities are always great and are a big part of why we return. It just makes it so easy. The drying room, the little kitchen sinks and fridge, all just make it easy to just roll up an relax! It’s amazingly peaceful and the no noise after 11pm that everyone respects means you know you won’t b kept awake with noisy neighbours. Hobbit houses were lovely, a bit more space so if the weather isn’t great you have a bit more room inside. Log burner was lovely and you have to fire it up what ever the weather!! As always Barney and the staff are great. Only downside this time was the clouds at night meant we didn’t have the view of the stars that look amazing on a clear night! Great location for exploring York and loads to do locally. Look forward to coming back!

  158. A little bit of heaven

Baxby is one of the best campsites we’ve used. Pitches are so generous and the fire pits are a great touch. The bathrooms are spotless and washing up area brilliant with hot water and eco liquid provided. Simply beautiful site and will definitely return!

  159. The best site we’ve ever stayed at!

We’ve been to The Hideaway a few times, since it first opened, and have introduced a whole bunch of friends to it, including several first-time campers who have gone on to love life under canvas thanks to this fabulous site. It’s always lovely to go back. Barney always gives a warm welcome, the facilities are second to none, and the site itself is delightful. Being able to have a campfire and a tripod barbecue to cook on is a real bonus, and the eco ethics (even down to providing environmentally friendly, vegan, cruelty-free washing up liquid and hand soap) mean you can relax, knowing you’re having a ‘minimal impact’ holiday. We can’t wait to go back again!

  160. One of the best campsites experienced

Beautiful peaceful organised well thought through campsite. Amazing value too. Would return for a peaceful getaway. Location is rural but there’s plenty of great villages and towns yo explore within driving distance. A great example of how to run a campsite and encourage respectfulness to fellow campers.

  161. An Idyllic Nook in North Yorkshire

Perfect – the washing facilities would rival the ones in most peoples homes. The drying room did the trick for damp towels and also cut down on clothing potentially hanging off guy ropes. A good amount of space for each tent site ensured that you never felt crowded and The Sanctuary was just that – we spotted two barn owls flying forth for their dinner.

  162. Hello,
Just emailing to say thank you for a lovely weekend. We were a party of 6 (two tents and one van) from 18th-20th May. Me and my boyfriend have been twice before and wanted to bring my parents and my sister for some birthday celebrations. Such a lovely atmosphere; clean, tranquil but still enough freedom to have some fun. We liked the Baxby Fest and it was perfect for us.
We think you are doing a great job and we will be back soon, either as individuals or as a family.
Will be trying out the Hobbit houses next.
    Regards, Grace

  163. My boyfriend and I stayed in one of the eco pods this weekend just gone. We had a fantastic time from the warm greeting we received from Barney to meeting new friends. The facilities are great and very well kept. The retro caravan is fab and great for the next morning when you fancy a proper coffee with fresh baked pastries 🙂 The Saturday evening was very entertaining listening to people sing and play on their guitars whilst we all sat by open camp fires. Children laughing and playing and toasting their marshmallows with the guidance of parents/carers. It really was a lovely evening. I can highly recommend baxby manor Wether you want to camp in a tent through to stopping in one of the eco pods or hobbit houses. Next time I hope to persuade my boyfriend to take my tent and camp out properly lol

  164. We spent one night at The Hideaway this weekend, in a tent with our 2 daughters. The site is beautiful, peaceful and calm. Children could play in safety, the pitches are a good size and surrounded by nice areas of grass and some trees. The potwash area, toilets/showers and shop are of a high standard. They’re kept very clean, and the underfloor heating in the toilets is much appreciated on a 4am bathroom call!!
Barney and all the staff are lovely and friendly. Everything about the site was explained on check in, they work hard to make this site the little gem that it is. We were lucky enough to be there on their ‘Baxbyfest’ night, which was a lovely gathering of people with instruments having a good singalong, families all sitting around the camp fires joining in. The kids loved it as much as we did.
We will definitely return to this lovely site, hopefully on a regular basis!!

  165. The best things in life are free !!!!

Just one of the most gorgeous places to stay Baxby Manor, staff so friendly and hospitality outstanding, accomadation amazing, facilities excellent, access excellent, well done to Barney who is always just a phone call away nothing is a problem thank you so much ??

  166. Excelent stay

Exemplary ammenity block large pitches and quiet contry location. Open log fires make the evening very relaxing. Friendly and helpful staff.

  167. The most relaxing weekend

As it was bank holiday, and a hot one as well, we knew it’d be busy on the campsite. We’ve had less than positive experiences on busy sites before but this was totally different. What a wonderful place. Everything so well thought out. We stayed in the sanctuary and, as a couple, it was lovely to have the peace and quiet which came with that. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again. Thank you!

  168. Thank you for a lovely weekend!

Thank you for a lovely weekend! You have a beautifully thought-out and well kept campsite. Excellent washing and other facilities. As promised by your rules, it was a very chilled out and quiet weekend – perfect for our small family with young children, as there was absolutely no noise at night. The children loved splashing in the shallow pools in the river alongside the campsite. We loved sitting around our own personal fire pit!

  169. May Day Holiday

As always the staff on site were friendly and very helpful. The site was kept as clean as possible but no matter what other users may let you down. There was a problem one night with only 1 toilet working out of 5 but that was down to children not being supervised when using the facilities and putting too much toilet paper in the toilet so they could not then flush. Not sure what you can do about this as you state all over children must be supervised. The shop is stocked perfectly and has everything you need should you forget something. This was our 3rd time here and we will be back. Thank you

  170. First visit, will definitely return again soon!

We have been looking for an excuse to stay at the Hideaway but as we usually pack up the VW Camper and head off at short notice, we have never managed to get in due to its popularity. On our first visit, it is easy to see why! A beautiful secluded spot, generous pitches with fire-pits, a well stocked shop with fair prices and very professionally run by Barney who’s general outlook just adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the site. We’ll definitely be back in 2018!

  171. Fantastic bank holiday stay

Stayed again at the Hideaway with family and friends. As always, a fantastic visit. The site is excellent, Barney the owner very helpful, and I couldn’t fault anything the site does or provides.

  172. Perfect pods!

This was our second stay at The Hideaway, this time staying in one of their ecopods. The pod was perfect for us for a weekend stay, with a comfortable double bed, generous decking, ample space and of course it’s own firepit. Barney and his small team keep the site clean and tidy and nothing is too much trouble. We didn’t want to leave!

  173. The Hideaway

We had a lovely stay at The Hideaway. It is such a relaxing place to visit. Barney was very friendly and helpful, facilities were excellent and the campfires were superb! We could not fault anything and will definitely be returning.

  174. Perfect retreat!

Great facilities, extremely clean washrooms with nice touches like fresh flowers. We stayed in the adult sanctuary and it was a beautiful spot next to the beck. It’s thoughtfully planned out to give privacy and lovely to have a campfire. Lovely walk straight from the campsite. A perfect break away.

  175. A lovely, quiet, well kept site

Which is why we keep coming back! It is in beautiful rural surroundings but not ridiculously far to travel to a great variety of attractions if wanted. The surrounding villages are beautiful and lovely walks direct from campsite so no need to go anywhere else! The fire pit is always a plus and lived by the adults as much as the children ! Showers warm, pitches spaced well apart, well stocked shop, nice pub in village, breakfast van and a real effort made regarding eco issues & conservation on the site – what more could you want from a campsite ????

  176. First visit

Perfect! Large pitch sizes, open campfires, chilled vibe, clean facilities (and not clinical) with fridge/ freezer (very handy) and fresh croissants/coffee on a morning, could have stayed for longer, will be back again

  177. Unimpressed

We stayed here on the bank holiday weekend in a hobbit house and was really disappointed by the fact that we in very close proximity to the other houses. Our house directly faced the neighbour giving us no privacy, peace or shield from their extremely smokey fire (something we weren’t expecting with a name including ‘hideaway’). Also, the double bed is in a very inconvenient place being so low down (no good for anyone suffering from back pain or bad knees) with a bunk over the top (both my partner and I hit our head and back numerous times).

    • Hi David, I’m sorry you couldn’t make out from the map that the five Hobbit Houses we have are all in the same area and next to each other however I don’t have any hobbit Houses that directly face each other…?!
The Hobbit House layout is supposed to be “hobbity” so the low beds and bunks are all part of the experience. The double beds are movable too so can be pulled out from under the bunk above.
Someone with a bad back or knees probably wouldn’t choose to book a “Hobbit House”, or indeed go camping/glamping.

The Hobbit Houses are new for 2018 and we do have a landscaping programme in place for over the winter so this should make a difference when it comes to having your own private space. In an ideal world we would have liked to have had the planting in place before opening but we all remember what a wet and snowy start to “Spring” it was so this unfortunately had a knock-on effect and we were unable to plant anything. Hopefully you will return over the next year or two and see the planting we have planned.

  178. Tour de Yorkshire Week end

Nice place, well maintaned, good facililties, good staff, but!!!!!!! every pitch has a fire pit which sounds like a good idea but when we came back to the camp after a day out it was like looking over a battle field just afer the cannons have gone off, more smoke than fresh air, this really lets the place down and is the only reason we will not be returning. I go camping to get away from the city life, polution, smoke, car fumes etc

    • Thanks for the feedback Michael. All I can say is; 99% of people come here because they can have a proper campfire. Plus out here in the sticks where we don’t have mains gas we rely on wood for heating and hot water! 🙂
Joking apart though; the weather was cracking over the Bank Holiday weekend and because there was very little or no wind due to the high pressure over the country the log smoke hung in the air and didn’t go anywhere fast.
I think most would take campfire smoke over city smog and noise any day!

  179. Great campsite

Lovely campsite, best wash rooms I’ve ever used. Shower could do with lasting a little longer. Really peaceful, loved having the fire pit and good value for money. Will definitely return

  180. Our stay

Really enjoyed our stay here. Would have given all points 5 stars but felt a little let down on our last day. It was raining and it took us longer to pack away. Once we were packed away we went to use the showers as we were wet to be told that the check out was at 11, and as it was after 11 we couldn’t use the shower. The cleaner told us as she had just cleaned them we were unable to use them. Even though if the other people on the site would have needed to use them they could. As she hadn’t cleaned the male showers she allowed me to use them which was fine as there was not many people on the campsite, but if it was busy may become an issue. This wouldn’t put us off going again, but a little bit of leniency in this aspect would have been much better as don’t know why there was an issue with me needing to use the shower ??

    • Hi Beckie,

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

I have looked into the matter and believe it was Pam you spoke with and who was cleaning as mentioned in your feedback.
As Pam explained at the time she has only just started working at The Hideaway and was unaware of the options for people wanting to use the facilities after 11am so when you came to use the facilities at just after 12pm she explained that she was half way through cleaning them but would check with management what the options were however as i was not there you told Pam you were happy using the Gents which had not been cleaned yet.
As everyone else had left the site (bar the one tent that was staying) Pam wanted to make sure the facilities were clean for any new arrivals and was unaware of the leniency surrounding people who were late checking out, thus the reason for her uncertainty.

Anyway lessons learnt all round so thank you again Beckie and I look forward to seeing you at The Hideaway again soon 🙂
      Barney (owner)

  181. Highly recommended

Stayed for 2 nights and had a great time relaxing beside the campfire. Lovely and accommodating staff. Excellent facilities and overall impressed with cleanliness and tidiness of the place. Being dog friendly was a huge bonus for ourselves. Would love to see more sites run by the company in the future.

  182. Great campfires

Beautiful natural campsite , very relaxing, particularly enjoyed the campfire as this facility is relatively unique amongst commercial sites.

  183. Spring Weekend Break Great Site

Don’t go expecting pristine manicured pitches. The beauty in this site is that it fits in perfectly with it’s natural surroundings. Quiet, calm, peaceful. Lovely at night when the fire pits are lit. Pristine shower block Absolutely gorgeous. Can’t wait to revisit.

  184. Great back-to-nature campsite!

The Hideaway is a total escape and just how camping should be. It is so well thought out and well cared for by it’s owners. The fire pits on every pitch are the icing on the cake. We will be back!

  185. Family trip to check out hobbit house

Great family place to stay been camping and tried hobbit house would fully recommend a stay. Staff friendly and helpful perfect stay

  186. Our favourite campsite

We have stayed here twice now and absolutely love it. Great size of pitches, each with fire pit. You can hire a brazier to cook on. Well-stocked shop. Very clean facilities. Only minor niggles are that you have to press the shower back on every five seconds- I’m all for conserving water, but that’s extreme! Also that there is no washing machine. There is a drying room where you can hand wash though. We will definitely be back for a third visit.

  187. Fantastic stay

Fabulous location, fantastic facilities and very friendly and helpful staff. Had a brilliant weekend and the kids were in their element. Would definitely recommend and have already booked again for summer! ??

  188. Family weekend

We came for a weekend with our one year old. We were made very welcome by staff who advised us that our chosen pitch may be slightly wet, but directed us to a drier pitch. There was lots of space for our little one to toddler around and we loved having our own fire pit, and the use of a cooking tripod. The toilets were spotlessly clean and lovely and warm and the drying room was a handy bonus. We will definitely return.

  189. Campervan

A lovely clean site, family friendly, clean facilities and staff we super helpful (even pulled us out when the camper got stuck). Would highly recommend.

  190. Family of 3

Lovely relaxed campsite, great location perfectly sized as not too busy but a lovely welcoming friendly atmosphere. There isn’t an awful lots for children regarding activities but I feel that is the beauty of it. Children are then encouraged to make conversation, play amongst nature’s playground and walk in the local area. The local walk offered for 10p from the little shop is great! Lovely relaxing time had by all. Thanks The Hideaway!

  191. Fire pit camping

A real campsite for real campers ! Barney provides an idyllic camping experience for the true camper. FIRE PIT camping is the heart of a night under canvas. Quiet chat under the stars in front of a fire with nearest and dearest family is the reason I load the car and plan the trip like clockwork to make it a success. Crowd and noise control is also another feather in this sites cap. Plastic shoe covers offered to enter the bathrooms in wet weather…worth every penny ! We will definitely return when we come back to walk the ALPACAS at BEACON FARM again. Excellent Sunday roast at the CARLTON INN on Easter Sunday. Thanks to Barney and team at THE HIDEAWAY for a great weekend at Easter.

  192. A wet Easter weekend

All thought the weather got the better of us. We still looked forward and enjoyed our weekend at The Hideway. A immaculate kept site with great facilities and helpful friendly staff. A added bonus was Liza Jane a vintage caravan where we could get fresh coffee and pastries. Highly recommend and we will be returning.Just need to book the weather.

  193. Easter break

It’s the earliest camping trip we’ve had in a year, so we were expecting it to be cold. The camp fire kept us lovely and warm, toilets and shower room were very clean and warm. We enjoyed a very nice meal at the Plum and Partridge pub round the corner and even treated ourselves to a coffee and sausage roll from the lady that has the camper in the morning. Great start to a year of camping, will definitely return!

  194. Great campsite!

Lovely few days at the Hideaway – shame about the rain and quite muddy on electric pitches due to previous trailer tents but facilities still spotless and very warm. Thanks to Barney for helping us out with a stove when we forgot ours and for his guide to local pubs! Kids had great fun exploring and getting muddy and loved the camp fire. Will definitely return when not so wet.

  195. Fantastic place for a real Hideaway

I was looking for a place close to home that allowed fires but still had a little comfort for the not so true camper partner of mine. We stayed in FP1 (Fairy Palace1 as my little girl called it) and it was lovely, small and cute as she put it. The toilet facilities wouldnt be out of place in a top end hotel, amazing and really clean. The little things too like providing Eco Friendly washing liquid really add to the place. Friendly staff and also a great location for heading out to the North York Moors. Will def be returning

  196. October Camping Trip

Both me and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baxby Manor! Barney (the owner of the site) was really friendly and helpful! We managed to see Ripon, York and other little villiages nearby. Lovely little campsite and lovely and quiet. Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here.

  197. Blown away by The Hideaway

Extremely good toilet/wash facilities. Beautiful setting. Quaint ecopod. Well kept grounds. Nice fire pit. Friendly accomodating staff. Perfect.

  198. Excellent glamping

Fantastic stay in the Belle tents with family, lovely to have the fire pit to cook on and roasting marshmallows into the evening. Best campsite facilities I have seen. Very helpful and accommodating staff, overall a fantastic place to stay

  199. THE HIDEAWAY

This was a lovely, well designed site. The facilities were fabulous and having a firepit on each pitch is a great idea. There’s a little shop on site, which stocks most things you’re likely to forget or run out of. There are a few villages with pubs serving food within easy walking distance and it’s within easy reach of York. The only complaint we had was with the booking system. We were bought a gift voucher for Christmas, but when we came to book our break there was no option on the booking system to redeem a gift voucher. When we queried this, we were told that we would have to pay for the pitch again and then be refunded when we arrived. We don’t think this is acceptable. If someone gives you a gift you shouldn’t have to buy it again for yourself before you can use it!

    • Thank you for the feedback and positive comments.
As you are aware The Hideaway is not a large company, we do not have the means (or the money!) of providing a website akin to those such as John Lewis or Tesco where vouchers can be redeemed immediately so i am sorry that you found the whole Gift Voucher process to be unacceptable and caused you an inconvenience. At present this is the only way we, a small family business, can process Gift Vouchers.

  200. Great trip even in the mud

We stayed at the weekend for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed every second dispite the weather being poor and it was extremely muddy we had a great time and the children 3 and 6 loved it. The facilities are the best I’ve ever had at a camp site and little extras like wheelbarrows to help carry things from the car to the pitch. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

  201. Great place to visit North Yorkshire from

My partner and I plus the dog had a great 3 night stay in the Sanctuary in late September, although the site was quite we found the facilities very good and each pitch has its own fire pit made the evenings very enjoyable. The site was quite wet but that is just the time of year and even getting caught in the rain the drying facility’s were superb. We visited many of the local villages and towns, no shortage of good coffee and cake in Thirsk, Helmesley, Ampleforth and Easingwold and all lovely places to visit. Its just over the Flyingdale moor and into Whitby for fantastic fish and chips and a great beach walk. All in all a great site, great location and we will be back.

  202. The Sanctuary T30

Fantastic pitch, well thought out transport by way of wheeled trolley. Whole site was well thought out and immaculate. Absolutely full campsite but our pitch felt very private and peaceful. Very muddy but no fault of owners, price you pay for a woodland pitch in the rain. Would definitely return.

  203. Fantastic hidden beauty !!

What a great stay at the hideaway, perfectly designed and ran to cater for all tastes, this is a wonderful site and one that allows you to relax have fun and be as involved or not with people …. great cycling opportunities in the local areas and walks too. Barney is a really nice guy and nothing was too much trouble. I recommend this anyone who loves camping, walking, fires and fun !!!

  204. Good site for older kids

The site itself was nice, however we had a couple of issues. Firstly the website said there was kitchen facilities but when we turned up there was a sink and a fridge. I had expected a kettle at least, if not a microwave. If I had known in advance it would have been fine but I don’t think you can advertise a kitchen without providing a kettle. It caused issues with our baby’s milk anyway. Secondly we were allocated a pitch upon booking (V2) which was basically the worst pitch on the site. It was at the junction of 2 roads so had people traipsing up and down all night to the bathrooms and kids going up and down on their bikes making loads of noise. It wasn’t noisy after the curfew of 10pm but it was beforehand. Our little guy goes down at 7pm so an out of the way pitch would have been better. We should have asked to move but had pitched our tent by the time we were having the issues. I think that that pitch shouldn’t be used unless the site is full. We could see plenty of much better pitches out of the way of the road we could have been allocated. The other thing was that a lot of the pitches were very muddy which wasn’t great with a crawler. Overall I think it would have been fine with older kids but it wasn’t great for a baby. The toilet block was good though and the picnic area would have been great in good weather. Plus the play area up the road was good for older kids but not much for babies to play on.

    • Thank you for your feedback.

You were under the impression that there were “kitchen facilities” at The Hideaway; what gave you the impression there was a kitchen please? I mention on my website that there is a pot-wash and a food preparation area but do not mention a kitchen at all, have you seen The Hideaway listed as having a kitchen with microwave etc on another website? If so and you can remember which site i would be grateful if you could let me know which site it was so i can inform them of the correct description of the facilities. I have not had any other guests expect there to be a fully equipped kitchen on site.

You also mention being allocated a pitch; all pitches are chosen by you the camper when you book online via the website we do not allocate pitches at all so sorry you did not like the pitch you chose, V2 i believe? Hopefully you will stay with us again in the future and next time choose a pitch more to your liking. If anyone wishes to move pitches we are more than happy to accommodate this providing there are other pitches available but you didn’t ask.
When camping in the UK in what is effectively a field on a farm mud is a factor that always has to be taken into account, all campers know this, you are not staying in a hotel! Plus I cannot control the weather! 2012 was a LOT worse believe me! This summer has been a particularly wet and muddy and as proprietor of a campsite it has been very testing, as is most years at some point, it called the Great British Weather! If you don’t like mud then perhaps camping in the UK isn’t for you??!

Thanks again for your feedback Jo.

  205. Lovely hideaway

The camp facilities are spotless and well kept. Next time as I camp alone I’d probably be better in the adult only section as the campers next to me weren’t quiet at 6am but this was rectified by the manager quickly

  206. Great site miserable weather

Good first impression as you drive in and a warm welcome from Barney. The pitch was flat and spacious with its own firepit. Facilities were clean, well maintained and a higher standard than many. My only gripe was that the shower push button lasted about two seconds, so it was difficult to wash my hair and keep the water flowing. The weather was wet and areas of the site became quite muddy but the requirement to remove or cover shoes helped keep the facilities clean. I could do without the many (many, many) lists of dos and don’ts round the site – wherever there’s a bit of wall there’s a laminated poster to remind you to clean up / keep quiet etc. It felt a bit primary school. Overall a good experience and I would return…might check the weather before booking though!

    • Two seconds for the shower is a bit of an exaggeration isn’t it!! Ive tested them all and none are less than five seconds. Its eco-friendly, thats the point 🙂
The “do’s and don’ts” around the site are necessary to keep The Hideaway as it is, (You say yourself; “Facilities were clean, well maintained and a higher standard than many”). To the majority the notices state the obvious but it only takes a few to spoil it for everyone else, the notices do help to “educate” the few! I think you’d be horrified at the state of the facilities if i took some/all the notices down!

  207. Nice weekend away

Lovely (if slightly soggy) weekend away in a superior bell tent. Brilliantly equipped but a little tired looking, possibly because it was getting to end of season? Beds rock hard, wish we’d taken our air beds! Wash facilities absolutely fab, lovely and warm and always clean. Gorgeous breakfast caravan for pastries and coffees, mmmm 🙂 fire pits great.

  208. Still a wonderful site

This was our second visit to the Hideaway, and we still love it, it’s so peaceful and we’ll run, some complain about their being too many rules, but these are just common courtesy standards to allow everyone to have a peaceful holiday

  209. So peaceful

This campsite is perfect for those needing a break from busy noisy hussle and bustle of every day life. Site is perfect for a total break, enjoy sitting round campfire looking at the stars and listening to the wildlife.

  210. Very happy

Couldn’t reccomend the hindeaway any higher. Very clean and well kept facilities, brilliant location and very friendly and knowledgable staff. Very glad I stumbled across your page and I will most definitely be returning.

  211. Lovely campsite for families

We stayed at the Hideaway as a family and overall the facilities were brilliant – safe, clean and a good range of things on offer both at the site and surrounding area. We loved having a BBQ on the fire pit and the toilet/shower facilities were very good.

  212. Immaculate camp site

The wife and I found this site to be of an incredibly high standard, on site there are bell tents and eco pods as well as the standard tent pitches. The facilities block was of a high standard and included a drying room (very useful) as well as the usual showers, shop etc. This provided my wife’s only niggle which was that the showers required a fair amount of skill to use without being alternately frozen, then boiled like a lobster, then frozen again. The site provides a high quality service which you must respect while there so I would suggest it’s better for mature and experienced campers rather than noisy teens

  213. Enjoyable stay

Really enjoyed staying here for our first family holiday with two very small children. The bell tent was beautiful and I loved that it faced a little river and a field. The facilities were good and the dry room in particular was useful.

  214. LOVELY CAMPSITE

What a lovely campsite the cleanest toilets and showers I have ever seen staff really friendly and helpful .I like the idea of choosing your own pitch and the fact every pitch gets its own firepit. Ideal spot to explore Sutton bank, Helmsley etc. would definitely go back.

  215. Wonderful place

We visit every year for a peaceful camping adventure where we can relax in comfort. We live nearby but love this site for its relaxed atmosphere. Kids love playing about in the grass and the fire pits are glorious in the evening. Just lovely

  216. What it says on the tin.

Peaceful and out of the way, exactly what it says on the tin. Highly recommend unless you want to stay up till 2am drinking and shouting, also if you like lying in your tent being gently lulled to sleep by the heavy traffic on the other side of the hedge or groups of loud obnoxious types then don’t come here. Facilities are clean, warm and generally spider free. There’s indoor washing up, a fridge and freezer and some charging points for the phones we can’t possibly do without. I will certainly be coming again and will be recommending it to my friends.

  217. A good site overall chosen for its handy location near to a foraging course my husband and I were attending in Pilmore. Only niggle was our pitch in the sanctuary was very bare with very little grass. Thanks

    • Sorry Jane, thats the price to pay when surrounded by trees and on secluded pitches.
Have thinned out the trees a little to see if that helps next year but don’t want to overdo it!

  218. Wonderful campsite

Exactly what we were looking for, a fab mix of informal camping fields and first rate amenities. Clean, friendly, safe and dog friendly with footpaths through fields metres away from our tent!

  219. Great weekend

This is the 3rd time we have been to The Hideaway, camping and a hut. We love it here. The pithes are big enough so you don’t feel you are on top of your camping neighbours. The firepit for each pitch is great allowing the real camping expetience of cooking on an open fire. The no noise policy after 11 is great allowing everyone a good night’s sleep. The facilities are great and the shop stocks the essentials if you need the. Friendly staff and enough to do around and about to keep the whole family occupied. The weekend morning cafe caravan is great if you want a posh coffee or a something yummy as a treat. Highly recommend the Hideaway if you are after a quiet, friendly site.

  220. Lovely peaceful campsite.

We had a fantastic weekend at the hideaway. The pitch was lovely and large with hedges on each side making it feel more private. The firepit was a lovely touch and firewood at 10 pounds for 2 nights seemed reasonable. The coffee van on Saturday and Sunday was just the icing on the cake. Beautiful location and a fab campsite, we will be back!

  221. Well run campsite – mostly

Lovely site, well run and idyllic setting. My only gripe was on the last night there was a big group of people that had totally ignored the ‘no noise after 11′ rule. It got to 1130pm and I had to go and speak to them myself, at which point I was questioned about my own parenting skills because their noise was keeping my child awake. Not exactly Baxby Manors’ fault I know, but the next day there was another bunch of people turning up to join their party which goes against what the ethos of this place seems to be and didn’t see anything that was being done to stop it. The party goers were also utterly unaware of the ‘no noise after 11’ rule so I’d suggest this being stressed a bit more – particularly when large groups turn up like as happened here.

    • Hi, thank you for your feedback although i wish you had told me about the noisy group when you were here then I could have had a quiet word with them! If people don’t tell us until after they have left we can’t do anything about it at the time.
As you have posted your review anonymously i am unable to see when you stayed and work out who the group may have been.
If you could let me know ( via barney@baxbyhideaway.co.uk) which area or pitches they were on, or what dates you stayed, i can hopefully determine who they were and make a note on the system should they attempt to make any large group bookings in the future.

You will have gathered from the website we have a maximum of three pitches in a group but we are/were unaware of any large group bookings recently. I make the ELEVEN7 no noise policy VERY clear on the website so there is no excuse for people to be noisy past 11pm. I am sorry this put a dampener on your stay at The Hideaway but hope you will visit again soon.
      Barney

  222. Lovely campsite!

Absolutely loved our weeks stay at The Hideaway. Such a relaxed site with so much to do nearby. Lovely walk to the nearby Carlton Husthwaite down the track, worth a walk back on the road to stop at the honesty cafe on the road back. Great to be able to have a campfire at each pit and well worth hiring the tripod to cook over the fire too. We’ve already booked a further week next year!

  223. Baxby experience

It was a lovely hidden patch of nature! I loved being able to make my own bonfire and the little caravan of heaven makes amazing pizzas, coffees and pastries!! I would have liked a little more for the kids to do like a park or competition something like that but apart from that it was a lovely trip away!!

  224. Only 1 thing

The only thing I’d say that could have improved our stay is if there could be a field for families with older children although the young children near us were well behaved it’s not always the case. But totally perfect place to come thank you.

  225. Definitely a hide-away!

Great campsite. Chilled out because of sensible rules (and not selfish ‘suit yourself’ culture). Really appreciated 11-7 quietness, a car pack for cars, and respect for our environment- recycling investment and campfire provision. Wash and loo facilities A1! Good little shop and breakfast caravan. Well priced, well run and yes a little off the beaten track and a real ‘get away from it all’

  226. A little gem of a site

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, getting close to nature, spacious pitches and real campfires, look no further. There’s plenty of space for kids to explore and, although there are no facilities specifically for them, ours have never been bored. Barney, the owner, is a really friendly guy and keeps the place in tip-top condition.

  227. odd shoe thing

I thought the site was great and the facilities very good – exceptional in fact. The only thing I found weird is the shoes in plastic bags thing. The only place I think you should be putting your feet in plastic bags is Buckingham Palace or my mum’s house on a bad day. You definitely shouldn’t need to do it when camping! I know this is a small thing but it’s a really odd thing to ask campers to do. It’s also something I’ve literally never been asked to do at any other campsite. anyway, besides that – great job! Hopefully we’ll be back!

    • Hi Paul, thanks for the review.
The shoe covers thing is a “learnt from past experience” thing & really just makes the whole Hideaway experience more enjoyable for you and your fellow campers, no one wants to be showering and walking barefoot on muddy floors! This is why the facilities are exceptionally clean and why we pride ourselves on this. At the end of the day we are 100+ people in a field on a farm and i know you would have been horrified at how muddy the shower rooms became if we didn’t suggest wearing some Crocs or similar indoor footwear (or the shoe covers).
We don’t insist on people wearing them we just hope people can see why we suggest it and then appreciate the cleanliness later 🙂

  228. A Campers Paradise

We’ve been camping now for 14yrs and this site is definitely the best we have been too. Facilities are great, clean and modern. Drying room was great for wet clothes and the site shop had some cracking local beers and ciders to try by the camp fire. We honestly can’t fault this site and the location is great for visiting all the attractions North Yorkshire offer.

  229. Great campsite

We stumbled upon this little gem by trawling through online searches for somewhere to camp , so glad we did. Booking online is simple and you even get to choose where you pitch. The site is well kept with great facilities. The availability of the fire pit to have campfire and also hire tripod to cook on it is worth coming back for alone! The van selling hot drinks and pastries of a morning is a great idea. In fact the only thing I think that could’ve improved our stay was if the van also did bacon butties! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Hideaway.

  230. Fantastic site

This was my kids first camping trip so we wanted somewhere that allowed open fires so they could toast marshmallows on an evening and sit round the fire chatting. The site was very family friendly, safe with all cars parked away from tents and very quiet with an 11 pm noise curfew. Perfect for their first introduction to camping.

  231. It was lovely, was expecting a tad more

We stayed as a family of 5 with 3 small children in a tent (non-electric). It was a lovely, organised and clean campsite. When we first arrived the lady in the shop looked like she was ready for home, I gave her a big smile and didn’t get one in return. I asked where we needed to park our car and she gave me a whole verbal list of where to park and where everything was and what time things closed and opened, I couldn’t remember everything she said. The parking spot was a bit too tight for my liking but manageable. The spot to pitch our tent was a nice size, the firepit add on is ah-mazing, love it! The toilets and shower facilities are clean and great, only things I would change is there are no windows or something in place to get rid of smells. You have to keep pressing the shower button which is a bit of a pain and the hairdryer there is way too weak. It would be good to either have a proper hairdryer that actually blows strong air or a place to plug in a hairdryer. The washing-up facilities, fridge and freezers etc was great also. The coffee from the caravan was really nice. The bin facilities were good, I think we recycled a lot more than we would’ve done because of the way it was set up. I would go again but only as a couple. There was a park just over the road but besides that there wasn’t really anything for the kids to do and we were hoping to do some walks but there weren’t any and the one around the campsite was too overgrown so couldn’t do that. I saw glimpses of Barney and he looks a very friendly chappy. Overall the campsite is really good.

  232. Best camping place we have ever been to!

A lot of thoughts and efforts have been laboured to this place – definitely a campsite with a soul! The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor is a clean, tidy campsite with many thoughtful facilities such as the controlled-temperature drying room, access to fridge/freezer, access to charging points and many others. It is also in a good spot for people who wants to explore York!

  233. Great visit again

This is our 2nd visit to the Hideaway and once again we have had a great time, the pitches are big, the fire pits excellent for chatting around and catching up and the children enjoyed exploring the surrounding areas and its location for a good walk.

  234. The best campsite we have been to for years

We stayed at The Hideaway in our tent with two young boys in August. The pitches were a great size with lots of room for the boys to playmand although you cannot drive and park on the camping field we were right next to where our car was parked. The fire pit was a huge success and we had a great camp fire, it was lovely to see all the other campers doing the same. We bought logs from the shop for Ģ6. We visited the local pub where there was a fun day going on with a bbq and bouncy castle. We received a lovely welcome there and would definitely return. The local playground was a hit with the boys too. All in all we had a great stay!

  235. Amazing peaceful place

Love how peaceful the camp site it just wished there was more activities in the day, we also didn’t manage to catch pizza night as we wasn’t there on a Friday. But would definitely return the cleanliness of the camp is amazing and the staff are fab!

  236. August Bank Holiday weekend at The Hideaway.

We visited The Hideaway for a long (5 day) weekend over August Bank Holiday as a group of friends and family. We all absolutely loved our time there, not just because the sun blazed for the entire time! The pitches are large and the fire pits are fantastic, just so cosy to cuddle up round and admire the stars in the evening. The children (age 12-7) spent their time exploring the forest and surrounding areas and came back full of tales of the things they had seen. There is a brilliant playground a short walk off site and the food at the Plum and Partridge was superb. The 11pm noise ban is strictly adhered to which was much appreciated by all. The toilets and showers are lovely and plentiful so there was minimal queuing (though we did try and go at off peak times). We’d gone prepared with food but had a slight malfunction (the pizzas are lovely but don’t rely on them to completely fill a hungry family!) so we’d cooked the next day’s meal too and bought supplies at the site shop for the next day. We could get pasta but a jar of the quick chuck it in pasta sauce would have been very handy too! Otherwise the shop is well stocked with the essentials. We loved our time there and have unanimously voted to return next summer.

  237. Perfect camping

For the last 2 August bank holidays, our group of friends have gone to baxby. It’s such a lovely setting, the pitches are a very generous size, with the added bonus of the fire pits, they’re brilliant! The facilities are great, tho I could shout at a few people for leaving their mucky shoes on in the toilets!! Great toilets and showers, the drying room is a good addition. There has been so much thought put in to the layout, with each area feeling quite secluded and private. Selling the local cider is a good idea, it would be a fab idea to extend the shop a little. The visiting local butcher means you get delicious meat delivered to the door, delicious coffees and fresh pastries in the morning, and the addition of the pizza night…well that was yummy (despite the queues tho I believe there will be some more investment in this area) you have thought of everything, I love the fact that it’s all local businesses supporting each other. The only shame is that the newly opened pub/restaurant is not really appropriate for campers, we would all prefer something more rustic! Love the place, Barney and his kids are so welcoming and friendly. We love it so much, we arrived home and booked in for next year again!!! Continued success to you, it really is a credit to you

  238. Fabulous fire pits

We had another wonderful stay at the Hideaway. Barney was really helpful in suggesting where to pitch our tents as there had been a lot of rain. As usual, facilities were very clean and well-maintained. We absolutely love the site! The site was really quiet in the evening; it was lovely sitting round the firepit, enjoying the amazing stars.

  239. Lovely wedding

My wife and I got married at the Hideaway; we had an a wonderful time and if we could we would do it all here again; already planning on coming back next year for our anniversary!

  240. First impressions.

The most clean and modern bathrooms I have been to whilst camping, they were very up to standard! Lovely and peaceful area, was nice to see birds flying so close and hear the owls at night. Overall, great place to go camping and will definitely come again

  241. our kind of place

We have only been camping 5 times and have been here for 4 of them. We love the big pitches and fire pits. There is no laid on entertainment which we love and plenty of space for children to make their own. We also love the fact that its camping without caravans and cars are not allowed on pitches Toilet block and pot wash are good and kept well with plenty of hot water although it only takes one person to leave a muddy floor.

  242. Brilliant place !!!!

Brilliant place, we love it here and will be booking again for next year. The staff are amazing, really helpful and the coffee caravan is amazing!! Facilities are always clean and tidy, pure luxury. Couldn’t recommend enough

  243. The hideaway@baxby manor

Great little camp site with pitches big enough for our 8 man tent plus porch. Nice little shop and a caravan on site serving breakfast and also pizzas on a Friday night. Shower block and toilets were immaculate as was pot washing area. There was also a beck running through the site that the kids could play in. Only downside was there was no play area on site but there is one at the top of a hill off site.

  244. PLace to play for kids

We stayed at the Bell Tents and enjoyed the stays, however it would have been great if there were more spaces between the tents for kids to play around. There was limited open space where we stayed outside the bell tent location as it was busy and there were lots of private tents around. The children’s play area was really good and we spent a lot of time there. I completely enjoyed the time with the family. Keep improving 🙂

  245. Yet another fantastic break

Have stayed at the Hideaway many times. Cannot fault it in any way. Perfect little site to relax and enjoy good company. This break was to spend time with an old school friend- there’s no better way to have a catch-up than enjoying a drink and a laugh by the camp fire!

  246. Can’t recommend highly enough

Beautiful site with 5star facilities, lovely staff and lots to do. We will definitely be back xx loved the hooting of the owls and the awesome views of the stars too xx

  247. Facilities

It would have been nice to have a few children’s facilities there such as a playground and other things fir the children to do. There was a lovely playground about 5 minutes walk away though.

  248. Hideaway

We had a lovely warm 4 nights in August in our tent. The firepits were good for fires and cooking. Take plenty of your own logs as we sourced some cheaper in Ripon. As it was warm, there were loads of flies in the shower blocks and kitchen – not sure what could be done about it. Laundry/dry room was fab and like a steam room and were ideal for wet towels and clothes. Indoor Potwash room was fab too! Very tidy site and my boys enjoyed it. We’ll be back in the future. Tents were safe when we went out for the day too! Only a pub in the local village (with Plum the ginger cat) sat on the seating outside. No shops in the village.

  249. Excellent campsite

Perfect place to stay. Very clean and modern facilities. The ability to have campfires is what camping is all about. The only downside is there isn’t nothing to do on the evenings especially for the children

  250. Super stay at the hideaway

The children & I had a great 3 night stay at the hideaway – the bel tent was perfectly equipped & positioned. The site has clearly been well planned and managed. The wash facilities were the best I’ve seen at campsites and their eco philosophy is to be greatly admired. The surrounding area is beaituful & we enjoyed our visit to York which was only a 30 minute drive away. Would definitely recommend.

  251. Excellent!

The Hideaway was perfect! Peace & quiet, spotlessly clean and the staff couldn’t be more friendly or helpful if they tried. We’re already planning our next stay!

  252. Excellent camp site

The first time out for over 20 yrs and the experience was fantastic. We will definitely be going back. We chose the campsite because it is designed to be a relaxing nature place (has noise restrictions etc) and it develivered.

  253. Holiday Highlights

All the camp facilities were superb – our first experience of cooking on a fire pit was a success and the Bell Tents were so well equipped it was certainly a little home from home. Thank you to Barney and Katie for looking after us so well. From talking to fellow campers it was clear that many of them return year after year which speaks volumes. Lisa Janes was also a little extra that was a welcome sight on a drizzly morning. In particular I loved the environmental ethos of the site. It’s good to know that we can still tread lightly, even on holiday!

  254. One night stay

Very friendly and small campsite with good rules regarding noise, pets and large groups that everyone seemed to adhere to. Facilities are clean and modern with a well stocked shop. Enjoyed the little caravan serving pastries and quality coffee on a morning. Nice to see everyone using the firepits to cook thier evening meals. Wished there were onsite activities for kids or safer areas to explore. I am not an experienced camper and thought this was the perfect introduction to the idea.

  255. The nettley path of doooooom

We will be back! The only thing i would like is a little more maintainance of the path down to thw adult only pitches. I got stung a fair bit walking to and form T30. Nothing else. Beautiful location, splendid isolation and a cracking pitch.

  256. very peaceful

This campsite is by far the quietest and most peaceful we have ever been on, staff and other campers were very friendly. If you like nature this is for you.Plenty of space per pitch and each with it’s own fire pit which made the evenings. My only quibble was the shower space, the floor space to dry off and dress was wet with the shower but we got round that by bunking into a sink cubicle!!!! No more wet pyjama bottoms!! Definitely going back again and again!! Loved it!

  257. Good facilities, nice site

A peaceful location and good quality facilities. The campfires are a lovely touch and help create a nice ambeiance and friendly atmosphere.

  258. Great adult-only section in lovely, small campsite

The campsite is a nice, relatively small size. We stayed in the adult bit which was fantastic – the pitches felt very private and weren’t too far from everything else. Amenities good and cleaned regularly. Fire pit excellent, well worth getting a tripod. Rest of campsite looked great – tents a good spacing apart.

  259. Great Campsite

Can’t fault the site at all. Plenty to see and do in surrounding areas. The shower and toilet areas were the best I’ve come across at any campsite.

  260. Great stay at The Hideaway

Our second time did not disappoint – facilities are great and in keeping with the beautiful surroundings. Such a shame that people abuse the bin area requiring the lids to be locked- just can’t understand that mentality. Lots of balsam by the stream – why not do a balsam bash weekend on a reduced rate?! Greatly appreciated the chance to overstay the checkout time so we had a dry tent to pack up – thanks for the flexibility and friendliness!

  261. Fantastic stay

Kids Loved staying near the stream on pitch 24 and 25. Really well spaced out pitches and lovely treat to have croissants and coffee for breakfast, great tripods to cook barbq food on – much prefer this to charcoal, went to easingwold maze-loads cheaper than York maze – simple but kids loved it and went to Sutton bank – lovely stay, we will be back! Considered going to local pub but food and reviews didn’t look to cater for campers which was a shame.

  262. Space, nature and good facilities

We had a wonderful stay at the Hideaway. As a family, we are still relatively new to camping, but this was undoubtedly the best campsite we have stayed at to date. It has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and we very much felt close to nature. There is a fantastic amount of space between each pitch and the fire pits were enjoyed by everyone. The facilities were clear and well maintained. It is a very good base for days out and without question, we would return to the Hideaway.

  263. Wonderful site

Came for a relaxing break and got everything we could have wanted. Very relaxing, excellent toilet and shower facilities and a really nice touch having the option of a real camp fire. Will definitely be back.

  264. My favourite site by far!

We came as a family of 4 with 2 young children. My husband was worried about the lack of children’s facilities but he needn’t have worried as it was perfect! Kids don’t need any more than some open space and they can have a whale of a time! The toilets and showers were lovely and clean and beautifully modern – the best I’ve come across while camping. Actual hot showers was a treat!! The shop is well equipped and we felt prices were very reasonable. The pitch itself was spacious and we loved that although the campsite was fully booked it was anything but cramped! The strict noise rules are mostly respected and if not, a quick text to Barney (the chief!) and he’ll soon deal with it. The washing facilities are great – washing up liquid and scouters are provided, and there is a fridge and freezers if you want to store perishables. Lots of phone charging points if you can’t do without! And a really handy drying room should you need it. We didn’t use it, but the catering can was really pretty and a lovely touch too. It fit into the surroundings beautifully. My boys loved the little touches such as the ‘shhhh don’t want the troll’ sign at the bridge, making sure we were silent as we passed. This is my favourite campsite yet, and we’ll definitely be back!

  265. Fantastic campsite!!!

Absolutely brilliant campsite, just what we wanted. Spacious, clean, beautiful surroundings, friendly staff and superb lattes in the morning! Definitely recommend to others, in fact, already have done! WE WILL BE BACK!!!!!

  266. Really well organised and relaxed campsite without caravans or camper vans.

Staff were great and very helpful. Made every effort to encourage people to keep communal spaces clean but some people ignored instructions. Swing barbecues great to hire. Campfire on every pitch excellent. Adult only area very private and the pitches further away from main campsite were the quietest and darkest. Good recommendations of local pubs and walks.

  267. fantastic weekend

had a fantastic weekend in the Bell Tent, the site was lovely and clear with a shop to buy logs and a butcher who came in the morning to sell meat. There was a caravan where you could get coffees and pastries. Definitely would come back again.

  268. Brilliant time!

Pros – Fire Pit, pitch TE2 – excellent, really liked how secluded it felt and really good size. Shower block. Cons – Not enough bags of logs on Saturday night so we ran out very early on, disappointing as this was a big attraction for us. Showers need a shelf and and on off button rather than pressing every 5 seconds. Pub in the village, we went on Saturday lunchtime – walked in and walked out, no-one in, no atmosphere and very overpriced, a lunch menu might attract more custom.

  269. Couples retreat rather than family site

Lovely quiet campsite, good pitches, loved being able to have a campfire. Not too great for children as no playground on site (village one requires adult attendance as too far away) and no wide open space to play games e.g football due to intentionally uncut grass. Just glad we brought the kids bikes as something to do. Rest of time stayed by camp. Depends what you are looking for in a camp. Lovely campsite but could do with more facilities for children

    • Thanks for your feedback Fiona. We like to keep things simple and encourage children (and adults!) to create their own fun and games and keep their and your imagination running wild too! Good old fashioned fun! 🙂
We have no intention of having a children’s play area I am afraid as we do not have the space but mainly for the reasons given above.

  270. Excellent!

Such a lovely site, well maintained and organised. Very generous and comfortable distance between pitches. Amazing toilet block and facilities. What a treat each and every pitch having it’s own fire pit, just perfect for toasting marshmallows. Can see why people suggest children play areas, however I understand why you don’t have any. This would encourage noise and chaos, the hideaway provides a good opportunity for creative, imaginative play. We avoided the local pub as not camper friendly and very expensive. The Fauconberg Arms at Coxwold was perfect. A great weekend had by all. Thank you Barney and Katie.

  271. Another great stay

Baxby is an excellent place to stay whether you’re camping or glamping. The site is the best I’ve seen in terms of little extras that have been thought about by the helpful ‘cheif’ Barney including the on-site shop. cloths in the bathrooms to keep it tidy, a fridge so that you’re milk and bacon stay cold for the morning and best of all is that every pitch/pod gets their own campfire. Can’t recommend it highly enough!!

  272. Hideaway campground review

The visit was not as appreciated as our first due to the level of care taken by the more numerous campers this time not looking after the wash facilities as well. Because it was busier it also became apparent that the car parking spaces available were not large enough to load and unload vehicles from the side doors, which was a problem for us as we are not tall people who can load/unload our roof box without standing on the ledge of the car door after it is fully open!

  273. First trip to the hideaway

We saw this campsite on ukcampsites website. Upon arrival there is dedicated parking while you checkin. The staff were friendly and helpfull when describing where park, the facilities and any rules. The first full day it rained constantly ( not the owners fault 🙂 ) Despite this the toilet/shower block was always clean. This is helped by most campers using the provided blue boot covers to stop mud being walked into the toilet/shower area. Everyone seems to leave cardboard at reception which can be used to get your fire started as every pitch has a fire pit which is a very nice touch (one of the reasons we booked this site as we like a campfire). We will definetly be going back next year.

  274. The perfect ‘ hideaway ‘

The perfect ‘ hideaway ‘ to escape to. Lovely site in a beautiful location. The pitch & the on site facilities 10 out of 10. Friendly & helpful staff. No complaints whatsoever !!!

  275. First visit

We were heading home from Cornwall to Edinburgh and chose to stay at Baxby to break up the journey and take in York. It wasn’t the easiest to locate but the instructions given before hand help make it clear. The pitch was fine, we would have preferred a hook up but none were available at this busy time. The pitch was large and had its own fire pit which was amazing to sit round at night. The toilets etc were of a very high standard and a real highlight. The caravan for breakfast pastries, tea/coffee was perfect and a cool touch!

  276. Hideaway with a camp fire

Had a great time here with kids and friends once the weather improved. If it rains it’s a bit of a washout as the site relies heavily on entertaining yourself in the great outdoors; nature, stream, camp fires which is what attracted us to it but equally it’s best point can be it’s downfall when it rains! Super relaxed environment super safe feeling about the place and kids enjoyed the freedom of roaming about. Campfires at night make the best memories. Kids cried when leaving but I knew rain was coming so was glad to get away!

  277. Clean and peaceful site.

Perfect if looking for peace and quiet. We stayed in the adults only part. Facilities are good, would have preferred more than one hairdryer as had to wait for turn, but this would not stop me from returning. Good sized pitches and thoughtfully provided wheelbarrow to take bags from car to pitch, which is great. Landscaped well to help enjoy nature.

  278. Lovely peaceful hideaway!

Had a wonderful stay at the hideaway – 2 nights following a 3 night stay near robin hoods bay. Campsite was attractive, excellent facilities – great showers and wash facilities (although shower button timer could do with being extended!) – firepits are an EXCELLENT bonus! Had lovely fire bbq’s and toasted marshmallows! Very tranquil – can see the stars really well and quite sheltered so not windy. Little coffee caravan was welcome in the morning! Delicious latte and pain au chocolat! Drying room and wash up room were great! If you stay and like animals definitely go to beacon alpacas just down the road for a guided alpaca walk! Was a fantastic activity! Cant think of any negatives! Great helpful service and had a great time!

  279. Fabulous Campsite

The Hideaway is amazing. Beautiful location, excellent modern clean facilities, great camp fire on each pitch that you can cook on. This was our 3rd visit and we’ll definitely be back. Love this site – highly recommend.

  280. Great camp site

The camp site is lovely. The fire pits are a good. The shower and toilets are new & clean. You can arrange for BBQ food to be delivered to the site and there is a pastry & coffee caravan which is great. The shop is also equipped with all you need. We had a fantastic weekend.

  281. Glamping for beginners

Spent a fantastic 2 nights in a superior bell tent with 2 children aged 8 and 3. The girls loved the tent and their special “camping beds”. All the basics needed for a memorable stay we’re provided and we loved cooking our sausages over the fire pit. The campsite was quiet and made a relaxing base from which to explore the surrounding area. Would definitely recommend.

  282. Family friendly and awesome!

We specifically chose this site for a couple of reasons, the campfire in each pitch and the no noise after 11 rule. We had pitch 22 and it was lovely. The pitches are really good sized and the campfire set up is brilliant. You can hire a cooking tripod for £5 for the length of your stay and a £20 refundable deposit so could introduce the children to proper campfire cooking (the toasted marshmallows and smores were a bonus!) The wash facilities are the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve stayed on a lot of campsites. The rule of no shoes/blue overshoe protectors meant they were kept pretty clean (there were some people who refused to pay attention to that which is bound to happen and not the fault of the site) What I really loved is how large the fields were that had the pitches on that could have easily held so many more pitches but the site owner has decided to keep a large middle section for wild flowers and grass so the fields weren’t packed with tents and it didn’t feel like we were packed in like cattle like some places we’ve visited. We had some issues with the no noise after 11 and the personal music (headphones only) rule but the staff make rounds to make sure these are being enforced. These problems were from people who have been multiple times and seem to think that because they were returning customers they could get away with it. This was not the case and were also made to comply so as not to ruin the experience for the other campers. The site is pet friendly, had a good little on site shop, fabulous recycling facilities (make sure you take carrier bags for rubbish, the bins won’t take bin liner size bags!) and a great caravan conversion coffee shop in the mornings. I can honestly say this is the best campsite I’ve been to, the location is great for the park and ride into York and it’s proximity to many other family orientated places to visit. I would not hesitate to recommend this site to friends and family (although I’d like to keep it as my little secret!) and will most definitely be returning. Thank you Barney and team for a wonderful 8 night stay, it was a pleasure to stay on your site.

  283. A brilliant weekend at The Hideaway

We went here with my family and my friend’s family and we couldn’t be more impressed. The facilities are second to none and the eco credentials really impressed us. There isn’t a children’s play-park on site, but that didn’t stop ours from having a brilliant time playing nearby in the copse (there is a park a little walk outside the campsite). We visited Helmsley open-air swimming pool on Saturday (it was a bit nippy) and then went in to Helmsley for lunch afterwards. We had beautiful weather the whole time we were there, and we loved the fire rings. You can hire a grill for the fire rings for cooking which we didn’t do but we would definitely do this next time. Liza-Jane’s Vintage Kitchen served up brilliant coffees and even my vegan friend was super impressed by the dairy-alternative mocha. There was a butcher on-site on the Saturday morning which allowed us to get BBQ provisions and because the campsite provides fridges we were able to keep everything fresh. There is a 7-11 rule about noise which was enforced and the site just had a really lovely, family feel. We will definitely return

  284. Fantastic

A small campsite with outstanding facilities and in a fantastic location. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The place was clean and warm and great showers. Quiet by 11 so brilliant if u have children. Would definitely recommend and will visit again .

  285. Second stay and won’t be our last!

we’ve visited Barney and his family twice now and what can we say!, his little ‘Hideaway’ is just that!, its the sort of camp you make your own fun and games, the field is bog enough for rounders and cricket with ALL other campers joining us for a game everyday!, showers, toilets etc are second to none, spotless, small but well stocked shop, fire pits at every tent point with the option to hire a tripod for cooking,, all really good ides from Barney, i hate to tell people to go and visit as its our little secret of paradise but GO!!, its a must!, theres no bingo and no noisey discos so if thats your bag don’t bother!, the 11-7am noise restrictions are a brilliant way to keep the likes of us going back year upon year, we love you Barney!!,, TE3,4,and 5 are out favourite spots as the big filed is on your doors step, The Jacksons xx

  286. Love The Hideaway

We’ve stayed here twice (once in a tent and once in an eco pod) and cannot rate this place highly enough. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. The washing and hygiene facilities are excellent. Love the addition of a breakfast camper – the mocha was delicious and very welcome! There isn’t a play area for the kids but that is kind of what makes it more peaceful and our kids didn’t need one because we enjoyed a lovely countryside walk and then dinner by the campfire. Can’t wait to go again!

  287. nice place – bit pricey for adult and child

Lovely place and good situation for north yorks NP. Great that parking was off site. No cars on grass etc. All good facilities and good to have no shoes/blue overshoes for bathrooms. Also fire pits helped with safety re open fires. Price was a bit high for single parent – one adult /one child – on the website there was no option for this and I wondered if 2 adults was cheaper? £50 for 2 nights seems a lot esp when no hookup.

  288. A Perfect Hideaway

We love The Hideaway & have stayed 4 times now. The pitches are a good size & each have their own fire pit (which are great to sit around on an evening toasting marshmallows). The eco friendly facilities are modern & well maintained & Barney is very passionate about recycling. The shop is well stocked for your camping needs & the addition of the caravan serving fresh coffee & pastries each morning is delightful. The local butcher makes deliveries on certain days (the steak was amazing). Our children love having the freedom to play outside all day & the village park & tennis courts are only a short walk away. Each time we return Barney has made small improvements such as the eco washing up liquid provided in the pot wash room. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

  289. First time glampers…

Stayed in a Bell Tent, great facilities, especially fire pits and communal block. Fabulous location. One thing that may add would be a specific outdoor play area for children to meet each other and play together – this could be done in a tasteful way in keeping with the ethos of the campsite / surroundings (think wooden open ended play equipment / resources as opposed to brightly coloured plastic / metal park)

  290. The Sanctuary

Had a lovely 4 night stay at Baxby. Second time on site but first time in the adults only section. We found pros and cons to this section. It was very peaceful, even managed a lie in and also managed to have a campfire on the first night when the rain never let due to over hanging trees. Downside it doesnt get much sun light so the ground did become rather muddy due to all the rain (this section has just opened so suppose bit of trial and error). Overall the facilities are clean and tidy and the staff very helpful. Little shop on site which sells all the necessities. Its a relaxed site and we love the open fire pits (keep you very warm at night).

  291. Recommend Baxby Manor without hesitation

Beautiful campsite in lovely surroundings. Lovely friendly, helpful staff. If I have to find a negative point it would be that the breakfast van didn’t do their gorgeous savoury pastries on weekdays.

  292. Away from it all

Relaxing and quiet. No riff raff or clubhouse entertainment. Back to the good old days, cooking out on a real camp fire and making simplified camping really work. Happy days.

  293. Lovely campsite to enjoy with family and friends

Just spent the weekend at the Hideaway. Lovely campsite. Pitches are generously sized and all of them are lovely and flat! Every pitch has a fire pit which is great. Plenty of woods and a stream for kids to play in. Would have been nice to have a climbing frame too. Even a drying room on site which is very handy. Facilities nice and clean. Nice pub within walking distance. Rather a lot of rules! We’ll definitely be back in the future.

  294. Only the weather could have made it better…

We spent 4 nights here, a nice small to medium sized campsite, good sized pitches, real fires allowed and excellent toilet /shower facilities. Friendly staff and handy for all of the wonders of Yorkshire. My only niggle, shop prices – we don’t mind a reasonable mark up but Ģ8.50 for a Ģ4.99 bottle of wine is doing the sales figures no favours!

  295. Wonderful site

We’ve just spent a week there and we all agreed that it’s one of the best sites we’ve stayed on. The facilities are great and I love the fact that the site was mainly tents. The highlight for me was the fire pit on each pitch. It was lovely to look around at night to see the fires burning. I did worry that not being able to park near the tent would be an issue, but the reality was the opposite. I loved the car free site, much more pleasant during the week and packing up actually was smoother than normal as we had to think about it…. The only downside was the shop opening hours, 9.15am opening and 6pm closing, which we missed most days a we were off exploring the area before 9 and often not back until after 6. However saying that we still manage to buy logs and the delicious local cider. A wonderful site and one we will definitely return to.

  296. Hideaway review

Have visited The Hideaway before so knew how good the facilities were. Impressed that access road had been upgraded. As usual facilities were well maintained and clean. Rubbish and recycling area had been redesigned to encourage people to think about what they were throwing away, unfortunately this just encourages thoughtless people to leave large bags of rubbish next to the bins. Majority of people at campsite respect the facilities, however spoilt by few that refuse to swap, cover shoes before entering washroom area.

  297. Great place to stay

Big site but subdivided into sections so it doesn’t feel huge. Nestled into wildlife – love the fact David Bellamy has input into nature sites. Just a lovely campsite.

  298. Our Stay at the Hideaway July 2017

The Hiseaway is a beautiful campsite – there are allocated pitches and parking spaces (no cars on the grass) which everyone has space. The facilities are very good – a single toilet block which is kept clean with push button showers with proper hot water and the toilet block itself is nice and warm. The only issue with the toilet block is the taps – children may will have issues using them as they are push down button ones that are quite stiff. They have a vintage caravan onsite selling hot drinks and breakfast items at weekends and weekdays during school holidays. Each pitch has a fire pit and you can hire a BBQ tripod to use and purchase logs to burn. There’s a shop onsite offering campsite essentials and a few little luxury extras. The surrounding area has loads to do – its right on the edge of the North York Moors so plenty to do for everyone. All in all a great site and one we will definitely go back to!

  299. Camp fires and meadows

We first went to the Hideaway five years ago just after it opened and loved the open nature of the pitches ( all tents /pods are around the edge of fields, so you are not hemmed in ) the lovely washrooms, and the campfire which comes with each pitch. After five years nothing had changed, apart from it getting more popular, and the grass in the middle of each field had been allowed to grow with wildflowers etc, with cut paths criss-crossing. Still lovely – would go again.

  300. Lovely camp site, however…

Family of four stayed for a week. Well kept site with decent facilities, camp fires a great touch. Bathrooms fine but taps very hard to push on, especially tricky for youngsters, and 9 second burst of water in showers (yes I counted) a bit short. A washing machine would have been helpful too. Great area, lots to do, but wouldn’t stay at site again as it was quite pricey for a camping pitch (over £200 for a week) not sure we found the ‘soul’. Didn’t really see the owners much, we stopped to say goodbye when we were leaving, otherwise we could have disappeared without notice.

  301. WOW

What a fantastic find this campsite was. We were looking for a campsite close to York and I am so glad we chose to come to Baxby Manor, everything about it was fantastic. From our beautiful pitch close to the river with a firepit to sit in front of a roaring fire everynight watching the owls swooping about the sky, to the immaculate toilets and showers which were the nicest, cleanest facilities we have every had camping and so well looked after with hot water at all times of the day and night. Fridge and freezer facilities to use and a drying room which we luckily did not need to use as the weather was on our side. The staff were equally helpful and friendly. Have been recommending to all our family and friends and we will be definitely be back.

  302. Relaxing stay at the hideaway

We enjoyed our 5 nights at the hideaway. The site is great and really well laid out. The showers and toilets were really modern, clean and loads of hot water. My kids loved the shop. It had a great variety of items. There’s some much to do in the local area. Most evenings we walked to the local park – it’s brilliant and there’s even an adult exercise area. The nearby Carlton Inn is amazing. I had a delicious steak pie followed by apple crumble.

  303. Shhh don’t tell it’s fabulous!

Amazing, a wonderful natural spot with superb facilities for us as a family it was perfect and our bell tent was a great treat. We will be back with our own tent, by far the best campsite we have ever stayed at

  304. Open and clean

Lovely open site with plenty of space for tents, shades etc, do take own shade as if sunny trees are not big enough to protect. Did not try local pub but were happy with all facilities and availabilty of staff. Very clean etc

  305. Best campsite we have ever visited.

Great campsite. Clean, small and well run. Excellent facilities always clean. Spacious plots with fire pits. Quiet rural location perfect for relaxing. Very quiet at night

  306. Lovely campsite

We stayed in one of the large Bell Tents and had a fabulous time. The camp site was lovely and the facilities clean. There is a great Eco ethos to the site. The children had lots of fun playing in the stream. We definitely plan to return.

  307. Peaceful quiet beautiful

Absolutely loved it at The Hideaway spacious pitches all with individual fire pit. One of the reasons I chose this site was that it had wheelchair accessible shadower/wc. This was one of the best ones I have stayed at, plenty of room to manoeuvre my wheelchair, rails in all the right places shower was on a slider rail and not a push button and a drop down seat even the mirror was in the correct position plus spotlessly clean. Had a walk down and looked at the adult only section if I was able to manage without ehu I would be really tempted it was like a secret garden each pitch in its own area which seemed lovely and secluded pull along wagons were provided for campers to transfer equipment from car park also wheelbarrows for anyone to use as parking is not by tents each pitch has it marked parking bay. Really peaceful at night as the no noise after 11pm and before 7am only sounds we heard were owls and other animals, definitely need a torch for going outside at night. As we were only there for two nights didn’t go anywhere on the full day we were there just enjoyed the peace and warm weather. There is a small flying club very near but sound of planes did not bother us and my husband enjoyed seeing them. Will definitely visit again even sat nav found it with no problem even though the web site does give how to get there directions so as not to end up down farm track.

  308. Beautiful and peaceful secluded campsite

Enjoyed stay at this beautiful secluded campsite; appreciated the amount of space allocated to each pitch and also the firepit for each pitch. Location excellent for access to North Yorkshire area. Appreciated the cleanliness of the toilets and washrooms and also the rules for quietness after 11pm.

  309. Brilliant “boutique” campsite

We loved the ecofriendly approach. The fires pits were fantastic. Everyone respected the curfew and the site rules. The provision of cleaning cloths and squidgy mops meant people also wiped facilities after themselves and removed shoes in the toilet block so everything was super clean. The site really suits its name as we felt like we’d had a relaxing hideaway escape. Plus we loved the surrounding area, especially the outdoor swimming pool at Helmsley and the Carlton Inn at Carlton husthwaite. It was a great base our young family for a day trip to York, as well as the seaside and cycling in the local area.

  310. Lovely well organised site with a focus on nature and peaceful relaxation

Really enjoyed our stay with easy access to York and the moors. Well organised, beautifully clean and kept cars and noise to an absolute minimum. It was great to be able to choose our position on the site when we booked and the reduced rate for our short stay booked only a few days before was great. The nearest shop is 3 miles away and although the site shop provides most necessities make sure you take a pint of milk with you as the shop might have run out by the time you’ve arrived and pitched and need a cup of tea! However, the facilities were great including a shared fridge and freezer and lots of hot water in the immaculate showers. Next time we will visit when the deliveries for camp fires and breakfast are available as our trip from Monday to Friday meant we missed out. Also the catering van that looked lovely didn’t open outside school holidays during the week. We are not complaining but we did feel disappointed. A beautiful site though and we will certainly return.

  311. Lovely campsite, can’t wait to return

The Hideaway@Baxby was one of our best camping experiences as a family. Beautiful site, with exceptional facilities. Kids loved the stream (more entertaining than a playground, for us) and we all loved the fire pit and tripod grill. Excellent venue, we are already planning our next trip! Thank you for your hospitality.

  312. Lovely site

Good spot for visiting Dales, Moors, coast, York and Harrogate. All readily accessible and being in The Sanctuary gave the option of staying on site with seclusion, peace and quiet and birdsong. Campfire too!

  313. Lovely site, good first glamping experience

I enjoyed my midweek break glamping, and loved the tent, the outdoor cooking and the peace and quiet. The site is beautiful, spacious, quiet and very natural. I would possibly come here again, but not with children. Although our daughter found friends to play with, there wasn’t much to hand to entertain e.g. You can’t really play in the river, the local Park is quite a walk etc. The local pub is very posh and expensive, so there want anywhere to go to have a drink, and there are no shops within walking distance. Whilst the campsite shop has a few essentials, obviously It isn’t open long hours or evenings. The things that WOULD make me return to Hideaway for definite would be: – a small play area for kids with some park type equipment on site as I would feel very comfortable and safe letting my child play freely on the site with me watching from a distance – a little bar / pub – I’ve been to another glamping site that had a tiny bar in keeping with the vibe of the site where you could sit outside – also adds a nice social aspect to meet other campers – a snack bar of some kind that sold a small selection of meals – whilst it’s great camping and cooking outdoors, I do like to have a rest from Cooking on holiday. Also adds social aspect. The caravan is a great idea but it’s only open sat & sun mornings which is a bit pointless. Without an accessible local pub as well…. So – lovely site and we had a great time but at the moment I’m not dying to return as for me I need a bit more around to hand.

  314. The Amazing Hideaway at Baxby.

What can I say, but fantastic, amazing, best place ever. Been before and was really excited to return. Stayed for 4 nights, great value for money, Barney and all the staff are exceptional. Clean tidy, eco friendly. Private, and just an experience that anyone who loves the camping lifestyle should try. Its a must. !! The evenings are very special, as you make your tea over the bbq, and to finish it off with toasting marshmellows over the campfire. We took our two schnauzers Willow and Jasper, and they were so relaxed, well behavied, and they enjoyed every second of it. Thank you to all at The Hideaway, we look forward to returning very soon. Amanda Crick

  315. Weekend at The Hideaway.

My family and I, recently had a weekend at the Hideaway. First impression of the site is that it’s very well laid out (and flat), and clean and tidy. The campsite was enjoyed by the children, with freedom to play on the open areas in front of the tents, also able to play is the stream as this was not too deep. Very generous pitch sizes allows you to relax around your tent, and the fire pits ares great for the evening. If your considering this area, York is only 1/2 an hour away, and also only 1/2 hour away is Camphill adventure park – worth looking up (Quad bikes, “go ape” type activity, woodland adventure etc…) On conclusion of the weekend, i’d say this is a campsite designed and run by someone who has done a lot of camping in the past, and knows what people want/need from their camping experience. Great time – definitely be back.

  316. Stay at Baxby Manor

We stayed two nights in a bell tent. Every thing was fantastic. The location of the site is beautiful and really relaxing. The facilities were close and very clean. I would highly recommend this site.

  317. Nice site

Lovely campsite and facilities although on the expensive side. Given the money you pay to stay here I wouldn’t really expect to have to mop the floor after ourselves but saying that it does help to keep facilities clean and tidy

    • Thanks for the feedback and I am glad that you found the facilities clean and tidy.
We do not ask people to mop the floor, we just leave a discrete notice next to the mop in the shower rooms saying ; “Please feel free to use the mop” 🙂
The facilities are mopped and cleaned thoroughly every day.
As you discovered, the little notice (and the cloths left next to each sink) does help and people are conscious that the facilities are for everyone to use and campers keep them nice and clean, not just for themselves but for others too.

  318. Tranquil oasis

We only stayed for a night, passing through in a campervan. The site is a wonderful haven of tranquility. Very thoughtfully laid out with great attention to the environment. We would have loved to stay for longer.

  319. Fun in the Sun at the Hideaway, a hidden gem in an idyllic corner of North Yorkshire

A friend suggested we try the Hideaway for our annual “Daughters and Dads” camping trip. It proved to be a great recommendation! It lives up to its name, tucked away down a long drive in amongst rolling fields and country lanes in a quiet corner of North Yorkshire. The site has great pitches and a well-stocked little shop and coffee caravan. The washing facilities are among the best I have seen and the fact that you can cook over open fire (not often the case these days) adds to the whole experience. Beacon Alpacas, about a mile away, was a brilliant experience for any animal lovers, and our girls loved getting to walk and feed these fantastic beasts.

  320. A brief but pleasant stay

The booking was easy to make, the site was easy to find. On arrival we had good instructions and made our way to the pitch which was large, secluded and private. The whole camp site was immaculate. Facilities were excellent, showers and toilets very clean and the drying room a pleasant bonus. The little shop was staffed by friendly people and had a good variety of basics. We really enjoyed our stay, my first ever camping trip, certainly not my last

  321. Fantastic place to stay

We brought our 10 year old son camping here for the very first time! And loved it, everything is clean, tidy, and modern. We booked this site because we wanted a real fire. Cannot recommend enough

  322. Absolute bliss

Love this place. This was our 4th stay and have already book to stay again. Only issue is everyone else loves it too so getting in can be hard. It’s peaceful, beautiful and tranquil.

  323. Week Lng Stay at the Hideaway

We were very pleased when we arrived to find a lovely rural site, our pitch was in The Sanctuary a separate area for adults only, we had a stream at the end of the pitch which was surrounded by alders and wild flowers. The facilities on site were first class with clean and neat shower blocks and great pot washing area, the small shop onsite dealt with most of the essentials. Within the pot washing area there are fridges and freezers for campers to keep food, drink and cold blocks for cool boxes. We only have one complaint, on the night before we left our cold blocks were removed from the freezer for no good reason as they all had our surname written clearly on them, this meant we had to throw away all our food when we got home as it hadn’t been chilled, it seemed a somewhat petty thing to do and has rather put us off returning.

    • Hi Michael, Im sorry that your blocks were removed from the freezer. As clearly explained in the Pot-Wash room and on the notices attached to the complimentary fridges/freezers so long as everything has your departure date clearly marked there is no reason anything should be removed, unless of course the departure date has passed and items have been left. If items are marked with only a pitch number or a name then we cannot easily determine if you have left or are still on site.

  324. Great spacious plots

We stayed for 3 nights in the Sanctuary and it was fantastic. Huge plot, private and couldn’t wish for a more peaceful location with all the comfort and great amenities if you wanted them.

  325. Keep up the great work

The noise curfew is fundamental to the atmosphere of the park A ban on music at all hours would be better and screaming children contained in one area There are thousands of noisy ‘holiday parks’ but precious few quiet and peaceful retreats keep up the great work

  326. Glamping weekend

This little gem of a campsite is fantastic for all ages, the Pod we stayed in was clean tidy and very welcoming, the shower and toilet block was the cleanest toilet block we have ever used on a campsite, A very quaint shop with local produce at a reasonable price all round great experience.

  327. Wonderful place!

We had a fabulous weekend at the wonderful place that is the hideaway. We stayed in one of the family bell tents with our two young daughters and not only was it very clean and tidy but it was also very well equipped for us as first time campers (ok glampers). The facilities were clean and very well maintained. Most other campers also respected the no shoes or wear overshoes policy at muddy times which helped to keep the toilets and showers clean for all. My only suggestion would be that a small playground would be welcome for the children but we will definitely be returning to one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets.

  328. 40th birthday treat

We stayed at the Hideaway for my husband’s birthday and had a great time. We were very impressed with the belle tent and the quality of facilities on site.

  329. Weekend stay

We had a lovely weekend staying @ the hideaway. Weather was nice which helped. Lovely place with nice, flat, big sites for everybody. Our own campfire pit was fantastic, we ran out of wood. Toilets and potwashing was great and very posh and ckean. Only downside was there seemed to big a lot of big groups staying. On our field with 10 sites, we were the only family staying on our own. Didn’t work for any socialising for our kids, and we felt a bit hemmed in. Disappointing when the website actually says no big group bookings allowed. Luckily it was only a weekend not a whole week. Other than that we’ll be back and hope it was a one off.

  330. Little getaway

A great campsite and surprisingly easy to reach despite its rural location! Unfortunately it was raining/overcast when my girlfriend and I went, but we were nonetheless still impressed with the campsite and we definitely want to return to enjoy it in decent weather! Would recommend to anyone who wants a quiet place to relax, most activities are most certainly a drive away but this should not deter someone from staying.

  331. Absolutely delightful camp site, will definitely be back!

Very enjoyable stay. We stayed in the quiet, child free part which was delightfully quiet and lovely. We had to move for the last day because of availability conflict but the staff were extremely helpful in sorting it out with minimal bother for us. Would definitely recommend the site to anyone, it is delightful in every way!

  332. Hard to beat.

We first visited The Hideaway 4 years ago and have been back every year since. Sometimes more that twice a year. The local area has plenty to see, the camp is quiet& clean with good faculties always in great condition. It’s hard to find a campsite this good for this price across the country.

  333. Great weekend away in a idyllic place!

My boyfriend and I stayed in a bell tent and it was lovely, the decking with table and chairs outside was ideal and then the fire pit which adds fun bur also safety to your stay as you’re not worried about burning anything that shouldn’t be. The toilets were of a high standard and clean, wish they had plugs but I believe this was for health and safety so understandable. Just an overall great stay and Barney was lovely, friendly and helpful.

  334. Happy campers

I spent 2 days camping in May half term hols with my daughter and my mam and we had the best time! We loved the space and beautiful countryside views not to mention toasting marshmallows on the fire. Wonderful experience for my daughter who spent hours playing with the friends she’d made. If your looking for a peaceful back to nature experience I would highly recommend the hideaway. Can’t wait to return!

  335. Great place

Love this place, been 4/5 times over last few years , Barney the owner is spot on , friendly and always on hand to help , lovely quite and peaceful and all campers adhere to no loud noise , facilitiies always clean and pitches are a very good size , well recommend

  336. Beautiful, peaceful, well cared for site

We stayed in ‘the sanctuary’ for adults only. It was very private, peaceful and a haven for wildlife. Even on the main site there is plenty of space between pitches and a fire pit for each pitch. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring our grandchildren here. No activities or clubhouse, but then again no loud, inconsiderate or drunken campers. Showers/toilets clean and warm. Best site we have visited so far. There is not much in the village, one pub and no shops at all. However easingwold is only a few miles away and the bus stops not too far from the site

  337. It’s a must!

Fantastic site, Barney the site owner is amazing, always willing to help and answer any queries. Facilities are warm and very clean, lots of attention to detail. A site not to be missed!

  338. A really nice quiet weekend away

We found everything apart from the cleanliness of the ladies wash facilities excellent. Really surprised ladies using the facilities leave them in the condition they do ! Gents facilities were fine !

  339. Love this site

Great campsite .. lovely surroundings .. my only complaint would be Parents letting their children use the bathrooms as a playroom and people with the need to dispose of glass bottles at 6:30 am …it’s such a lovely site and Barney is passionate about it and it’s eco friendliness …please don’t spoil it for others

  340. A gem of a site and cracking weather made it a tip top weekend

The hideaway@Baxby Manor was suggested by a friend who found the site on the internet as the number 1 camp site in North Yorkshire. The website and information given was simple and easy to follow. Booking was even easier and paying before in full made checking in and out hassle free. Barnaby was excellent in answering a question of mine regarding an extra car and very accommodating with his response. Can I also say what a delight it was when speaking to him. He kept things simple and effective. The pitches themselves were big and the fire pits a great idea. The toilets, showers etc were fantastic and justified the weekend fee of a two night stay. The area itself was superb, a gentle 6 mile walk in blistering heat followed a trip to the Plum and Partridge refreshed all souls. Highly recommend this site. Ease of access off the A1M via the A19 Thirsk or through Boroughbridge and the back roads. I hope to be back.

  341. the perfect hideway

This is an excellent campsite, anyone wishing to relax & get away from it all couldn’t ask for anymore , once your here you could be miles from anywhere . hence the name Hideaway. This coupled with fire pits on every pitch & the availability to buy bags of logs just makes it that more special & most of the pitches are a good size where your not squeezed in next to neighbouring campers. the toilets/showers are warm & are cleaned daily, there is a drying room & good washroom facilities with a large fridge & two freezers. Barney the proprietor & staff are always on hand & make you feel welcome on arrival. Finally the campsite is located near to Historical York , Thirsk & the Yorkshire moors & your never far from the coast of Scarborough & Whitby etc. All in all this is perfect for good weekend or longer break away.

  342. Our stay

We loved the campsite, for our first camping trip it has certainly set the bar very high. The fact each pitch has a campfire was amazing. Very impressed with the shower / wash facilities and shop was well stocked. The caravan serving coffee and breakfast was very welcome in the morning. We just felt pressure to keep our young children quiet in the morning, I wonder whether one family field could be more relaxed about keeping noise down until 8am, with a 4am wake up it was a long time to try and keep quiet!!

  343. First but not the last visit

Beauty site with plenty of room on each pitch so you don’t feel like you are intruding on other people’s pitches. We had a fabulous weekend, thank you

  344. Peaceful retreat close to many attractions in North Yorkshire

The Hideaway is a lovely campsite with larger than average pitches for tents, each with their own fire pit. We stayed in an Eco Pod which was great for us, as it meant we didn’t need to pitch a tent. The shower block/ pot wash are excellent and very clean. I was impressed that there was a hairdryer and a fridge for communal use. The drying room would also be useful for walkers in wet weather. The little shop has any essentials you may have forgotten from home. I even bought a single egg one morning! No cars are allowed on the grass but wheelbarrows are supplied to transport your things, a nice touch! We will definitely return here one day in the future.

  345. Excellent stay

Just returned from a 3 night stay. Distance time, but not the last. Beautiful site, the meadow grass left to grow between pitches gave a lovely relaxed feel. This meant there was less playing area for children, but the pitches were so large that it didn’t seem to matter too much. Excellent shower/toilet blocks. It felt very safe. We have already been looking at when we can return.

  346. Hidden gem

We visited the hideaway at the weekend and were blessed with very good weather. We caught up with some very good friends of ours and were able to take advantage of hiring a tripod and cooking over a log fire in the pit that had been build near each pitch. We were amazed that everyone appeared to respect the quiet site rules and kept noise to a minimum after 11. We will definitely make another visit.

  347. My new favourite campsite

Just spent 3 nights mid-week in The Sanctuary at The Hideaway and it has just become my new favourite campsite. There were times when we would forget we were even on a campsite, this is about as close as you can get to wild camping. The facilities were immaculate, Barney was friendly and helpful. Just beware the local cider it is deceptively easy to drink! My only negative was the speed bumps on the approach road, they could do with being a bit more car friendly.

  348. Short break at the hideaway

We had a lovely stay at the hideaway recently. My partner & I spent 2 nights here midweek in June after reading lots of great reviews on the facebook page. The campsite was perfect, it was really well laid out with plenty of space & fantastic facilities. I was quiet when we where there as it was midweek & term time but even if it had been busier there was plenty of space. The share facilities where great, lovely toilet/wash facilities. We stayed in one of the double ecopods which was perfect for us and quiet roomy. The hideway was very reasonably priced too. While staying here we visited the local pub in the village just a 10min walk from the campsite for dinner one evening & a few drinks. The staff here where very friendly and the food was delicious, lovely place. We visited the North yoor moors during our stay, we took our bikes along with us & headed to Sutton Bank National park for the day, a lovely place for walking & cycling and was only 20mins drive away from the campsite.

  349. A lovely quiet, peaceful place to stay

We stayed in a double eco-pod at the Hideaway which was perfect for a long summer weekend. The campsite was easy to find due to Barney the owner’s directions. The cars are all parked away from the tent/pod pitches but carrying our kit was made as simple as possible due to well marked routes and a supply of wheelbarrows. In fact everything at the Hideaway has been incredibly well thought out to make life as peaceful as possible without having to work hard! We will definitely stay again and have already recommended the place to friends and family.

  350. Clean, Friendly and Excellent Location

Site facilities were the best I’ve seen in terms of cleanliness and functionality. Staff were always helpful and pleasant and the site itself was brilliantly set out to prevent overcrowding. Idea of camp fires and luggage trolleys were perfect. Addition of serenity area was good. Location to surrounding areas of interest was perfect! Would definitely return.

  351. Weekend away

Fab two-nighter that felt like longer with friends and family. The kids all had a great time and the fire pits were a huge hit and made the perfect BBQ. This site is the perfect example of you get what you pay for. Will definitely return.

  352. Another lovely stay at the hideaway

We stayed two nights in a bell tent on this occasion. We had friends staying in an adjacent bell tent, their first stay here. As always, Barney and the team did everything to make us feel welcome – it’s a little like ‘coming home’! Even though the weather wasn’t perfect (pouring rain one day), it was a lovely, relaxing weekend. We will be back soon! 🙂

  353. A lovely site, well thought out

This was our second visit to your site in the space of 2 months. The site is so clean and thought out the ‘hot room’ to dry towels is such a bonus. Only 2 things I would like to see improve …. the ‘no groups’ and ‘letting us off this ince’ was disappointing we have a big family and enjoy family time together. Not all groups are noise we r respectful and was the second time we came and would hope the group could return again! Only other thing that would b a bonus would b a small play area for the children as it’s hard to keep them away from the cars in their bikes with nowhere else to play. Great place overall we do love it here and rates so much higher than anywhere else by far.

  354. Fantastic as always

We love this site in fact, i think it’s our firm favorite now! We’ve stayed on different pitches and each brings it’s own benefits. The little shop has also really improved and is so handy! Barny is superb and we couldn’t ask for more.

  355. A great place to stay

Our first visit to The Hideaway and unfortunately our last. This was our final trip away under canvas, we are upgrading to a tin tent and sadly no caravans at The Hideaway. I could almost be persuaded to get the tent out again just to visit the Hideaway. The pitches are generous, the facilities spotless, and the site staff great. A real gem.

  356. Amazing spot with great, clean facilities

We’ve stayed before and will continue to do so in the future… we love this park, it’s great facilities and the energy that Barney puts into helping everyone.

  357. Great site

Loved the campsite used the ecopod for 2 nights, returning with my tent in three weeks time. Loved the peace and quiet of the site,no rowdy people, everyone enjoying the site.

  358. Nice weekend

The site is very nice fire pits privacy peaceful parking spaces could be a bit wider for unloading and getting in and out will definitely be back

  359. Absolutely Fantastic

I honestly don’t think I’ll find a better campsite. Loved the fire pits, they make sure the pitch sizes are great. Lovely atmosphere, the best facilities I’ve come across on any site, a wonderful pub (Carlton Inn) just down the road and helpful owner. Brilliant and can’t wait to go back.

  360. Half term getaway

The Hideaway provides every opportunity for a relaxing break. The site is easily accessible and within easy reach of many towns and attractions. The small shop is well stocked with essentials (including airbeds, which we forgot to take!!) We made full use of the laundry/drying room which is perfect for towels and wet gear as well as the first class shower/washing facilities. The pitches are well separated and fresh coffee and croissant are also available as well as the Camp Food Company, providing excellent locally sourced BBQ essentials.

  361. Great place to stay

We’ve camped before at The Hideaway and have already booked our next stay. The campsite is fairly small (Big benefit) and has clean, good quality facilities. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The waste and noise policies make the stay very enjoyable as they enable you to enjoy the rural setting to the full. The provision for camp fires and the local kids playground are also big positives. Only minor issue is they could do with another fridge on site as the one provided does get a little full.

  362. fantastic site!

Fantastic site in beautiful surroundings. Welcoming and friendly staff. Excellent facilities, fire pit is great touch and the good weather meant we used this every night to cook on. Great local attractions highly recommended are: york bird of prey centre, sutton bank national park cycle trail where we hired bikes for a great price, village of helmsley andcdden camp. A great place to eat is the oak tree pub about 15 mins drive with excellent food and service at a good price. Would definitely return to this lovely campsite.

  363. 2nd year in a row

After a successful weekend at baxby manor last year we re booked again and it was awesome!!! The huts are cute but spacious for a family of 4, Barney is really helpful and the facilities are great. Nice play area to walk too and lots to do nearby.

  364. Fabulous campsite

Loved the hideaway, very friendly and welcoming site, prices in shop were cheap. Good facilities and very spacious pitches. Loved the campfire. Looking forwards to returning again

  365. Perfect Holiday

We recently stayed at The Hideaway @Baxby Moor for the first time and were absolutely thrilled with our wee break. We told the campsite we were arriving late and that afternoon we received a phone call to explain where our pitch was as the office would be closed, and asking if we would like some logs putting on our pitch for the fire pit. We had our own parking space numbered with our pitch number and a wee pull along trailer to transport our belongings from the car to the tent pitch. The sanctuary part of the campsite was so quiet and beautiful with the stream running right by our pitch. We woke up to birds singing each morning and the facilities were super clean. There is even a drying room, super handy on a wet day. Couldn’t recommend this place more highly. Its very well organised and we will definitely be back again soon.

  366. Nicola, Leeds

Lovely stay in one of the bell tents. Beautiful surroundings and very quaint accommodation, nice for it to be a little different without losing the ‘camping’ feeling. Staff were efficient, friendly and helpful and to top it off great facilities. We will return to stay for a longer period.

  367. The site you want to keep to yourself

We have been to The Hideaway many times from the first year it opened at least once per year, by far the best site we have been to and we have travelled all over the country. Would recommend to anybody that want a peaceful and tranquil setting with fire pits to keep you warm through the late evening whilst cooking over the pit or just toasting your marshmallow.

  368. Lovely family-friendly campsite

The Hideaway is a really lovely site, tucked away in the countryside. The pitches are nicely spaced, and arranged within small hedged areas, so you never feel crowded. Access was easy and the directions clear (although they do need to be updated to reflect the fact that the lane is now paved). The facilities are very good. We especially enjoyed having our own fire-pit, with logs (and local cider!) available to buy on-site. The drying room was really useful. If I have a quibble, it’s that the push taps in the washroom were very hard to operate (impossible for kids), and that the fixed-temperature showers were just too hot for my littlest one. But overall, we had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend.

  369. Fabulous site

Fabulous place to stay. Lovely and quiet. Plenty of space between tents. Excellent toilet /washing facilities with plenty of warm water for the showers. Loved cooking on our fire pit bbq. Gorgeous area especially for walkers

  370. Great place to stay

With everything you need for camping on site it makes a great place to stay. The addition of a “mobile cafe ” with great coffee and pastries is very welcome when you first rise and take a walk to the facilities. The location is superb very “hidden” but within easy walking of a newly opened pub/restaurant in the small village. There are lots of walks nearby and watching the microlights on the airfield next door is a treat. The campsite is superbly run and would recommend a visit.

  371. 2nd time and as amazing as the 1st time

We love this place, it’s so relaxing, the facilities are great and it ticks all the boxes for us. Thank you, we’ll be back again soon.

  372. Great stay

We stayed in one of your belt tents with our young son. Great way for us to get back into camping after having him. Great location and facilities.

  373. Perfect Holiday

We recently stayed at The Hideaway @Baxby Manor for the first time and were absolutely thrilled with our wee break. 374. Fun weekend

We thoroughly enjoyed are weekend at The Hideaway great location and spacious campsite to make your own entertainment or just chill out round the fire pit, just what we like. We also loved the treats from Liza Jane’s vintage caravan. I can’t think of anything they need to improve on, maybe an extra fridge would be handy when the site is full. Barney was very helpful and happy to help us when needed. It has everything you need for a relaxing break away with plenty attractions, eating places and beautiful scenery close by. I love the fact it doesn’t have a club house or children’s park on site as this would spoil the lovely countryside and ambience, it’s good for children to appreciate the countryside and make up their own games and entertainment. The safety aspect was fine for me and my 11 year old daughter. I think with having the long track with speed ramps before you enter the site takes care of any unwanted visitors. Great parking facilities on hard ground and near the tents is perfect too and love the Glamping accommodation as would find it difficult putting up a tent on my own. We Just loved the place and haven’t stop raving about it to my friends and family. Definitely be back!

  375. Unique but room for improvement

The Hideaway was a popular venue for family /friendship groups. Shower/toilet block was modern but unsure how often it was inspected. The idea of wearing and handling plastic overshoes was frankly impractical and unhygienic. I only saw one water point…admittedly I didn’t walk all round the site but they certainly were not frequently placed and available. Why such a shortage of electric points ? Pitches were attractive, offering campers lots of space. Rubbish disposal needs looking at. ..no point lecturing campers about using small bin bags once they have arrived on site…..without small bin bags ! Price per night is a little high….I paid 40% less in Leyburn for a pitch with water, electricity and convenient waste disposal. Finally…try reassessing your style of information for campers…it comes across as “Do this….don’t do this…”.

    • Hi Rob,
I’m sorry you feel various improvements could be make and would not visit again with your motorhome but appreciate your feedback.
As you will have discovered The Hideaway is nothing like a Motorhome and Caravan Club site, things here are slightly different, as stated on the website, this is the reason most people stay here.

The facilities are cleaned thoroughly every day and as either myself or my cousin Katie is here all day every day we often use the facilities ourselves so always have a quick check to make sure everything is ship-shape. We would like to think and believe many people are community spirited enough to either tell us or do something about it themselves if something isn’t quite right.  This is normally the case and i often see campers running the mop or a cloth around! Lol.
The plastic shoe covers are really for your convenience, in wet weather it just helps to keep the facilities clean and tidy, they are not compulsory and we do suggest on the booking confirmation email that goes out to everyone who books that people bring a pair of Crocs or flip-flops to wear inside but some people prefer to wear the shoe covers. The facilities are for you and your fellow campers to use and enjoy, (such as filling buckets of hot water for your little ones to play in ;-)) so without having a 24/7 attendant in residence it does depend somewhat on campers keeping them clean for themselves.

All campsites are governed by a license to operate and no pitch must be more than 90m from a drinking water point and this is the case at The Hideaway, there are five water points on the site for 40 pitches and in my case no pitch is more than 50m away, your pitch was 20 m from the nearest point.

We are an eco-camping site and the electric supply to the whole site is restricted as it would take a new supply being dug in to increase the electric supply, something which i believe to not be particularly eco-friendly. We also have solar panels in the next field contributing to the site supply. All lighting on site, which is minimal, is LED and the shower block itself is Carbon Neutral.

We have bins for Landfill (which we try to discourage people from using so much!), a glass bin and bins for all other recycling and actively encourage everyone to recycle whilst at The Hideaway however we ask that people do not fill a large black bin liners with rubbish (you don’t need to use small bags, just not fill large ones) due to the fact that the lids on the wheelie bins are locked there is just a small postbox-like slot and large bags filled with rubbish won’t fit through. The lids are locked because when they were left open some people used the Hideaway as a tip; people would fill the bins with beds, tables, chairs, BBQ’s, etc! By asking people to keep volumes of rubbish small this enables rubbish to be deposited through the smaller post-box-like flaps in the bins and significantly reduces the amount of household items left for us to dispose of. Being a very rural site it is extremely hard (and expensive!) for us to dispose of rubbish, but especially larger items.

I would be open to and very keen on hearing of your suggestions Rob on better ways to display information for campers, please do email me directly on barney@baxbyhideaway.co.uk and we can discuss this.

  376. Has everything

Beautiful place to camp – especially for first time like us. Facilities first class, evenings spent round camp fire with kids memorable – hoping to come back soon!

  377. Can’t recommend Baxby highly enough

Best campsite I know. Quiet, perfectly located, great wash facilities and the 2300hrs lights out is perfect for families. To top it all, there are some wonderful places to visit within an hour’s drive.

  378. A little piece of heaven!

This is our very first venture into camping so we weren’t sure what to expect. The Hideaway was recommended by friends and exceeded our expectations by far. The Hideaway is beautifully kept with generous pitches and absolutely superb facilities. The showers and toilets are first class, spotlessly clean, modern and toasty. There were even fresh flowers! Fab washing up area with lots of fridge and freezer space and the staff were so friendly and helpful. If you’re looking for peace and quiet then this is the place. All we could hear was beautiful birdsong (ok. There was a cow with a persistent cough somewhere…..but….) it was a little piece of heaven and we just can’t wait to go back ??

  379. The hideaway…..

It a beautiful place we had fab time there with friends it’s got everything you could possibly need, there’s a small shop which has a good selection of things, the showers are lovely and well kept. We loved that there was a fire pit with the pitch. So good we’re going back again very soon ??

  380. A place of relaxation and family time

Perfect little campsite away from it all. Lovely quiet family atmosphere with campfires and a great place to relax. Within a short drive of loads of great places to visit in North Yorkshire.

  381. Better than I hoped for

We stayed here for the weekend a family of three, with another couple in their own tent. We only booked about a week before, but managed to be pitched next to each other. I like the fact that you can actually see which pitch you’ll be on at the time of booking (and get to choose if there are enough). The site it’s self is very well maintained to high standards, clean fully functioning amenities, the pot wash area (inside) was very clean with lovely hot water, cloths and washing up liquid (although perhaps someone may of left that!!). In here there is a very large fridge to store essentials and a chest freezer to store ice blocks, there is also phone charging points in here too. There is a very hot drying room and laundry, fantastic for drying towels, coats etc. On site there is a catering caravan opened on a morning, selling hot drinks, pastries and breakfast sandwiches, we didn’t buy anything but it seemed very popular. Every pitch has a fire pit for your use, you can buy logs (Ģ6.00 a bag) and hire a tripod and grill to cook over the fire for Ģ5.00 for the weekend (Ģ20.00 refundable deposit). Barney (the owner) abides with a strict no noise after 11pm rule which works really well, and recycling is a top priority. We have managed to book again in the not too far future which we are looking forward too. There is no play park here, but that doesn’t seem to stop the children from running around and exploring the area and generally having lots of fun. This is a lovely site, the only negative point I could make was that the toilets and showers were closed for 2 hours for cleaning which left only the one disabled toilet in use (so quite a queue at times!) other than that, both Barney and Katie are lovely helpful, friendly people.

  382. Our favourite campsite!!!!

My partner and I found this campsite online a couple of years ago when we wanted somewhere that allowed campfires……we are so impressed we keep coming back! The facilities are great and nothing is too much trouble even down to letting them now I’m coming so soya milk can be bought in for my latte from the caravan in the morning. I cannot praise this site enough!

  383. Amazing, loved it!

Beautiful site, big pitches and fire pit was amazing. You can tell the owner really cares about the site. The only tiny downside was having to leave site by 11am – after a lie-in and a cooked brekkie it was a bit of a rush to pack up! 12pm would be a bit more relaxing!

  384. Baxby for Peace and Solitude

Excellent site. Only about 1 mile from the A19 but you would never know it. Quiet and tucked away, very peaceful. Staff very helpful and friendly. Loads of space between pitches so privacy ensured. Toilets and showers modern, clean and warm. No complaints whatsoever. We will definitely be returning.

  385. The hideaway will not disappoint

Fabulous friendly QUIET campsite, facilities second to none, total chill out so peaceful, a great get away from it all, each pitch has its own firepit which you can hire a tripod to cook on so didn’t need the bar b que we took.

  386. A Great Bank Holiday Weekend

We booked a last minute yurt for the May bank holiday. The campsite is in a lovely quiet location with lots of beautiful scenery nearby. A great place for people who love nature and walking. The Bell Tent was perfect inside, the seating and firepit outside were a lovely touch. The facilities were always clean and tidy, it was also helpful they had a fridge/freezer. Although we didn’t buy any coffee or cake from the mini food campervan it was nice to have it as an option. Only minor issue was the Bell tent next to us had a young family and the little girl cried a lot in the evening and night, nothing the campsite could have done just a little unlucky. Overall a lovely weekend.

  387. Excellent

We went over bank holiday weekend with my best friends family and found the hideaway exceptional. The facilities are amazing and clean. Although the park was busy we didn’t feel cramped, the pitches are a good size. Excellent idea of the fire pits on every pitch made the evening pleasant tiasying marshmallows on the fire. Well done guys and see you soon

  388. The Hideaway – first trip of what will be many.

This was our first tenting holiday in about 20 years and I’m so glad we came here. the location is fantastic, the facilities were better than many hotels I’ve stayed in and the staff were fantastic. The pitches are nicely sized and well spaced out and theres a fire pit so cremated food all weekend 🙂 Can’t wait to book another weekend / week away.

  389. A hiiden gem!

A friendly welcome when we arrived, The site is in a lovely setting with excellent .super- clean facilities. I love the fact that it is so close to so many interesting places to visit. Castle Howard being the highlight, Will definitely come back . thankyou,

  390. super clean ! Amazing place!

We stayed here for 2 nights for my partners birthday and we couldn’t have asked for a cleaner place ! First impressions were how clean the toilets and showers were ! Even has fresh flowers in. Super helpful and friendly staff! Will definitely be returning with friends. Can’t recommend it enough.

  391. Clean, Friendly and idyllic

The Hideaway is only an hour away for us, so it was fairly local, but it felt like we had found an oasis when we arrived, it was just so clean and peaceful. We only stayed two nights, but due to the great friendly service and the efficient set up, everything was so easy, so I stay felt relaxed and longer. Camp facilities were clean, modern and well thought out( I like the fact there was a fridge available to put essentials in!), compared to other sites we have visited, and with it being fairly small it felt cosy and friendly and safe. We’ll definitely be back!

  392. Our Stay At The Hideaway

Our stay here was so lovely, the weather was cold but the individual campfires mean you can warm yourselves up nicely. You can hire pots and tripods to cool directly on your fire too!! The showers were great and very clean! There was outstandig recycling facilities available and a lovely little shop stocking most essentials and local produce. The camp site was easy to find following the directions online. The pitches were all well kept and clean and the surrounding area was very natural and relaxing. We absolutely loved it here!

  393. Hideaway Retreat

I was after a peaceful, quiet break away with my partner and dog and came across this gem! Beautiful location, lovely site and great staff to welcome you. Each pitch has its own fire pit which is all the entertainment you need of a night. Very good facilities and very eco friendly makes this a site I will return to again and again! If it’s a relaxing break you are after, look no further.

  394. Fabulous Hideaway @ Baxby Manor

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at this site. It was peaceful, with beautiful scenery in easy reach of other spectacular locations and we loved the provision of a fire pit. 6 yr old son enjoyed real outdoor play. We will definitely return.

  395. eco lodge

Beautiful place and surroundings. Very quiet (April) stayed in eco lodge was stunning but no heating or electric which we knew about but did miss it. Some tents have electric hook up and were cheaper to stay in. There is no play area on site but there is one down the road 10 min walk. So if you love a quiet site with camp fires then this is place for you. Very clean. Little shop great staff. Just think im past the camping stage. Talked to other campers with younger children mine is 11. They said they would defo return. Enjoy x

    • Thank you for your review of The Hideaway, I’m glad you enjoyed your stay.
There are no Glamping options with electric at The Hideaway, the tents with hook up that you refer to are pitches where people bring their own tents/campervans. 🙂

  396. The Hideaway – how a Waitrose campsite might be ………

The Hideaway was brilliant, spacious, clean and very well organised site wiith an emphasis on being eco friendly – but sensibly so. This was my first camping trip with my partner and his 13 year old son and my first camping trip in 20 years. I was so pleased I picked the Hideaway because the owners had thought of literally everything and it had a nice, unassuming sort of atmosphere – perfect for us being fairly clueless. They were kind enough to lend an extension cable for our very big pitch. If I have one criticism it was the number of noisy toddlers having tantrums but that is a reflection on its popularity with young families and if I had a young family it would be number 1 on my list. Perhaps an adults only section would be nice though. If you are considering camping in North Yorkshire – the Hideaway would be an excellent choice.

  397. Easter Stay

Disappointed that the pitches I booked carefully due to having very small children and 2 families camping together were given away to someone else. However the stay was brilliant anyway and the owner made sure we had a suitable space. Site was very clean, tidy and facilities were excellent. Lovely stay in lovely surroundings.

    • Hi,thank you for your comments and I am sorry to read you were not on the pitches you wanted. I am unaware of having to move anyone so far this season from the pitches they booked online via the website but i do remember someone booking two pitches online thinking that they were next to each other but in fact they were mistaken and had not looked at the map on the website but as it happened we managed to find two pitches next to each other despite this…but i am glad you enjoyed your stay. 🙂

  398. Lovely site

This was a lovely site and we would consider returning again. It was very tidy and the facilities were really clean. The only downside really was the check in and out times. Check in times were late, you couldn’t arrive before 2pm and check out was very early at 11am which when taking down a tent doesn’t give that much time to pack everything away, these times felt more in line with a hotel booking. I know that you could ask for extended time but this had to be paid at half rates which felt tight as we had already lost a full day as we couldn’t arrive on site until 2pm.

    • Hi, thanks for your comments about check in and out times, I am also happy to read you found the facilities very tidy and really clean.
For the facilities to be this clean though I need the time between 11am and 2pm to clean them. Being a small family business it is just not possible to have an earlier check in or a later check out time, there would not be the time available for me to clean the shower block, Pods and Bell tents.

  399. Amazing site

Loved it here! Massive pitches, friendly staff and the best facilities I’ve seen anywhere – spotlessly clean, modern and lovely and warm!

  400. We really enjoyed everything about the hideaway and will without a doubt be returning. Barney and all the staff work very hard to ensure that the site is kept too a very high standard and are always happy too help.

  401. As lovely as we remembered

Our third visit to The Hideaway after a gap of 2 years and it was just as lovely as we remembered it to be! The toilet/shower block was as warm, clean and welcoming as ever and the small shop had a plentiful supply of local apple juice and cider – which was all we really needed! The best feature of The Hideaway, however, is the fact that there are no adventure playgrounds, games rooms or indeed any form of entertainment other than the natural surroundings. It was great to see our three children making their own fun – and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process. We also love the fact that at The Hideaway, campfires are positively encouraged; there really is no better way to spend a beautiful, clear, spring evening. We we hope to be back very soon!

  402. Family camping

The hideaway is a lovely site, with fantastic facilities and close to a village park and fabulous bakery van. It’s lovely to be able to have campfires and the griddle plate was great for cooking on. Our only wish would be to have non electric van pitches close together as with young families we found it quite hard to chill with my brother and his family after bedtime.

  403. A little piece of heaven

This was our first ever camping experience made perfect by the natural beauty of the hideaway. No need for internet, phones and television when there are the birds to listen too. Sat around the campfire in the dark with a glass of wine in hand was perfection. Will definitely return and recommend.

  404. The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor

I love this place! We have been on numerrous occasions prior and it never fails to make me relax. Noise is kept to a minimum and it is definitely quiet after 11pm. It is also a haven for wildlife. The facilities are spotless with tons of hot water for showers etc. Each site has its own dedicated firepit and having a fire to sit around greatly enhances the ambience.

  405. Hide away few days it certainly was .

A super mini break.. a definite hide away place to total unwind and relax in amazing countryside and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Amazing amenities ..so clean and well thought out with eco facilities even down to the wheelbarrows to transport your things to the tents or pods. I would certainly visit again ..close enough to visit York and the East coast but likewise you can also sit and chill round the fire pit and unwind ..

  406. Another lovely stay at our favourite campsite

Unfortunately this was just a short overnight stay, but nonetheless was greatly enjoyed, as always. We love the Hideaway! Barney is the most helpful host – nothing is too much trouble! We will be back!

  407. Great visit

Visited in October half term. Had a fab time if chilly. Make sure you bring more clothes and more bedding than you think you need if you visit at this time of year. Loved cooking on open fire and watching the stars!

  408. Lovely, lovely site.

The Hideaway is ideal if you want peace and quiet and to “get away from it all”. If you want “life” and entertaining and “stuff to do” then it would possibly be too quiet, but for my son and I it was just what we wanted. The eco pods are adorable, like little Hobbit Houses, and the site is lovely. The shower/toilet block was spotless and beautifully warm (we were there at Hallowe’en) and even the pot wash was super clean. The staff were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a good stay. We have already booked to go back next year!

  409. Perfect

The perfect autumn getaway. Loved the fire pits, the owls hooting at night and the quietness. The facilities are the very best I’ve experienced and the staff were friendly, really helpful but allowed you your space. You really do have to try the local cider available in the shop. Will definitely be back

  410. Lovely autumn stay……

Stayed at The Hideaway October half term with friends. Lovely site, excellent very clean facilities, electric hook up really appreciated for time of year but only one post for three pitches and it didn’t reach to 3Rd pitch so we had to move tent closer. Drying room also brilliant. No kids facilities on site but I believe playground nearby…..ours entertained themselves!

  411. Hideaway

We recently stayed at the hideaway for 4 nights! Only 3 lots of campers on the site, felt like our very own Hideaway! Facilities immaculate! Staff friendly! Lots of nice walks from park!

  412. Best campsite !

We loved every minute at the Hideaway. Enjoyed the peace and quiet and excellent facilities. Saw some beautiful sunsets followed by relaxing evenings by the campfire.

  413. Excellent campsite

This was our first experience of campervan camping for many years and we were not disappointed with The Hideaway it was superb. The surroundings were beautiful, the staff very friendly and helpful, the shower and loo facilities so up to date and perfectly clean! The whole ambience of the campsite was spot on, Will definitely return.

  414. Love this place

Idyllic and beautiful as always , excellent and extremely clean toilet and shower facilities, really genuinely lovely and helpful staff/owners . Absolutely looking forward to repeat visits in 2017. Fire pits are the added bonus and one reason we return , nothing more relaxing when at the Hideaway..really is an escape for a period of time from the big wide world ..to which we always sadly return… but renewed and entwined and reminisced with the memory of wood smoke and tranquillity and hopeful of when we can escape back here again. Could not recommend this site enough …..We Love it xxx

  415. Couples holiday

Perfect during visit at the end of September. Helpful staff and lovely local cider! Very quiet and loved the fire pit. Good attractions nearby, including York, National Trust and English Heritage properties, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are all worth a visit. Go to the Carlton Inn about 1/2 hour walk away, delicious food!

  416. Little Gem

Found this campsite through an internet search and thought it looked good. The site is very peaceful but then we were only one of six campers! It was nice to be able to choose our pitch online when booking. We loved the fact that each pitch had a fire-pit and you could rent tripods and wood to use – you really know you’re camping when you can smell wood smoke! The toilet block looked as though it had only been opened last week: it was exceptionally clean (but there weren’t many campers and we had no rain) and beautifully warm. The showers had plenty of hot water and a spacious changing area. The dish washing area had three sinks and I imagine would be very crowded when the site is full. Barney was extremely helpful and passionate about his eco-campsite. Cars are not parked next to each pitch although wheelbarrows are provided to help you move kit from car to pitch. Free wi-fi is available but only round reception area.

  417. Fab site

Great site without the commercial entertainment, back to nature. Unfortunately our camp neighbours were a little inconsiderate and were on top of us despite the spacious pitches. Good wash facilities and fire pits at each pitch. Will be returning.

  418. Lovely friendly campsite with excellent facilities

The Hideaway is only a small campsite but that makes it feel very safe and friendly. The toilet/shower block is the nicest and cleanest that I have ever seen at a campsite. The pot wash facility is also clean and you even have access to a shared fridge and freezer. Each plot is well sized and has it’s own fire pit which is fantastic for cooler evenings. There isn’t a play park for the kids but they loved playing in the surrounding woods

  419. Excellent place to forget everything

Excellent campsite could not ask for more. The facilities are kept to a very high standard tiolets and the washing up room a spotless. The staff are very helpful and friendly the camping pitches are of a very good size with campfires. You can buy lots from the site office and they are good value I priced lots off the site and the site is cheaper. In my opinion this is a very well looked after site very clean and for me you can’t go wrong would defenatly recommend this site.

  420. Awesome Site

This site was recommended by friends and surpassed all expectations. Everything is catered for and then taken to that extra level without losing is primary values of being associated with David Bellamy’s principles. So much thought has gone into providing unique individual pitches in 4 different areas, all having their own character. Space abounds, wildlife is plentiful including a chorus of birds in the evening and early morning……

  421. Visit and enjoy. Leave it as you find it.

As a returning visitor but by no means a regular camper, this is by far the best campsite I have ever used. Easy to find availability and book online. Very helpful and friendly staff. Rules are there to maintain high standards and ensure people continue to enjoy this little hideaway. The campfire facilities are the icing on the cake.

  422. Last Family Getaway of the Year

We visited in September a late booking thanks to a cancellation. This is one of the best campsites I have been to. The plots are away from cars so you are safer. Each plot has it’s own fire pit for cooking. The shop is well stocked a was run by a couple of staff whilst we were there including the owner. The also have a symbiotic relationship with another business that run a stylish caravan café come takeaway restaurant, so if like us you come unprepared without food, there is hot food available until you are better prepared! The facilities are clean and enclosed in the same building as the shop with disabled access. The quality makes you feel like a hotel rather than a campsite (at least in the bathrooms!) A great stay. The local village currently has it’s pub being redesigned, but there is another one about 30 minutes walk through the countryside in another village.

  423. Wonderful stay

Chilled, peaceful (apart from owls at night but you can’t really complain about that can you?!). lovely clean warm shower block and toilets. Staff so helpful and friendly. We’ll be back next year ??

  424. First Glamping Expereince!

This was our first time experiencing Glamping and The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor was ideal for our first time! The Bell Tent which we stayed in was perfect. We particularly liked our own private decking/ fire pit area. The facilities onsite such as showers/ bathrooms and washing room were outstandingly clean! Couldn’t fault them one bit. The staff were delightful and ever so helpful. The only bad thing I have to say, which isn’t actually about The Hideaway, is that there weren’t many things for us to do in the surrounding area/ villages. Granted everyone has a different idea of activities when they go away but for us, especially during the day, we felt we were struggling to find things to do. Apart from that it was a perfect trip away and would highly recommend it!

  425. Fantastic get away site

Second time at the hideaway & hopefully not the last this is a beautiful site to relax & enjoy camping at its best, the fire pits are excellent for camp cooking or just sitting round, the shower/toilet facilities are excellent & we’re always clean, added bonus of a drying room for wet coats/towels came in handy, no activities as such for children but there were lots of young kids there & not one looked bored!

  426. The Hideaway

Lovely site, our children were free to go explring the site on their own in safety. The facilities are always clean, with friendly notices asking campers to be respectful of others and clean the areas they have used. The staff are warm and friendly. A visit to Liza Jane’s is a must!

  427. Fantastic Place to Stay

Had a 2 night stay for my daughters birthday. We loved every minute of it, gutted we couldn’t stay another night due to the site being full. We will be back soon!!!

  428. Late summer break

We stayed here for 3 nights and didn’t want to leave! The site is well maintained, and the staff were lovely. We loved being able to cook over our pitches own campfire every day and sit out at night keeping warm playing traditional campfire games.

  429. Weekend Glamping

My partner and I spent the weekend in one of your eco Bell Tents which we found cosy and well equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and really liked the wild elements to the campsite. We felt it was easy to find from the A19 and easily accessible with lovely villages close by for pubs and walks. The only downside I felt was the amount of young children messing up the bathroom facilities without parental supervision. Other than that the washroom facilities were much more modern and clean than other places we have stayed.

  430. Fab campsite

Really enjoyed our stay here. Lovely campsite, loved that a lot of space left for natural growth including wild flowers, the spacious pitches, fire pits and eco emphasis. Kids liked exploring around the trees around edge of campsite and also loved the playground nearby. Nice shop onsite and toilets/showers kept clean. Could do with couple more sinks for washing up. Perhaps the owners could consider a washing machine too. We unexpectedly needed to wash sleeping bag halfway through stay but couldn’t…managed though, so not too bothered. Will definitely return.

  431. Do we really have to go back home?

Very satisfied. We always feel welcomed. This was our second visit, and a longer one this time. Excellent base for visiting attractions, took a look at Thirsk, Easingwold (cycled from The Hideaway), visited Ampleforth Abbey (make the best cider, but if you visit the teashop try the apple cake), had a great day out at Beningborough Hall (good place for lunch too). And to ride off all the pub lunches, The Hideaway is perfectly placed for mountain biking, especially at Sutton Bank. Returning for Baxby Fest, cannot wait!

  432. Lovely stay

We stayed in the Superior Bell tent for two nights. We had a lovely time and will be back. The shop is great, well stocked and takes payment by card. Washing facilities are excellent too.

  433. Fantastic place to chill

My first experience of gleaming staying in a double pod. It was brilliant. The whole place is really well thought out and very chilled. 21st century camping.

  434. Family getaway

We are a family of 4, with 2 sons age 3yrs & 7yrs. On arriving at baxby manor a little earlier than expected we sey off for a tour around the campsite. We couldn’t find any children’s play parks but settled with a good old fashioned football and plenty of green space. The camp site was immaculate. We checked in and headed over to our bell tent (which we highly recommend) all the fun of camping without the stress of setting up your own tent. Again the tent was immaculate and the little extras such as camp stove and plates were greatly appreciated. There is very little to do in the village close to the campsite but this didn’t stop us having fun we went on woodland walks and played pooh sticks on the bridge over the river. All in all this is a great place to go to relax and simply chill out with immaculate facilities and welfare areas to complete the experience. This would be a great Base camp for those wishing to go to York and other surrounding areas. Lovely place and we will be back again.

  435. Lovely stay for 2 nights

Barney is really lovely, took time out to help us & was very accommodating. We booked for 2 adults & a 4 year old, when we arrived were given a double bell tent, but straight away Barney helped us find a solution, we had a futon mattress within minutes. My advice however would be to book for an over 5 year old if you want/need a spare bed for your child.

  436. Excellent getaway

We were not too sure what to expect as the site was a little more commercial than we would usually choose but as we were camping for 5 nights we wanted good shower facilities. We could not fault the site, very helpful and friendly staff, small shop on site selling the basics (and the prices were quite reasonable), proper fire pit and you had the option to hire a tripod for cooking over the fire pit which was good idea. There is couple of decent walks off site but its only a 20 minute drive to Sutton Bank and 40 minutes to Knaresborough (Nidd Gorge is a lovely walk). Would definitely return and in 2017 they are opening a adult’s only section.

  437. First stay

This is a fantastic camp site, and very well organised. Unfortunately for us it was pouring down the night we stayed and the pitch we had was a bit of a mud pit. The showers were lovely and warm, sadly the men’s bathroom was slightly flooded and a little dirty but we aren’t sure if that was due to a flux of people using it! Staff were very friendly without being overbearing. The van selling hot chocolate and croissants was much appreciated! Unfortunately with the rain we didn’t get to explore the site, but we do hope to return.

  438. Small & friendly

Nice little campsite, the facilities are conveniently positioned and all the pitches are nicely laid out too. We stayed during the summer holidays when the site was at full capacity but it didn’t feel over crowded. The toilets & showers could have perhaps done with an extra clean during such a busy time although the actual facilities are good and well designed. There was a toddler step to help reach the high sinks and there is a well thought out smaller sink with a soap dispenser handy for little ones too. The parking spaces are a bit of a tight squeeze and although I thought this might have been a problem everyone seemed to manage just fine. There are wheelbarrows on hand to help unloading to your pitch. All in all we thought it was a nice place to camp with a lovely atmosphere.

  439. A stunning hidden gem!

We wanted somewhere quiet and relaxing we could go with our 2 dogs, and thats exactly what we got. The facilities were second to none, the pitches were large and private each housing its own fire pit. The atmosphere was friendly and very rustic, there were owls and rabbits galore. We will be returning soon, with friends in tow as we feel its the best campsite we’ve been to. 10/10 (If you are looking for local pubs, beware!! they all close mid afternoon and the nearest one was a 45 mins walk).

  440. Quiet comfortable and clean

A one night stay in wet conditions meant we did not get the best from this site, would have liked to use more of the facilities. Can confirm site flat and well drained, wash rooms superb. Only criticism is car parking spaces too small, not give enough room to load and unload easily.

  441. Another great stay

Beautiful site, with lots of wild areas. There is lots of space for children to play, but no specific play area for them. Cars are not parked on pitches, so it’s really safe for them to run around. Facilities are top class. We’ve been many times and will return again in future.

  442. Very impressed

This was the first time I’d taken my 2 boys camping so we only stayed for 1 night. We wanted to stay longer as it was just so relaxing. Everybody on the site was very respectful to others. No rowdiness at all. It would be nice to see a bit more to do for children on the site but then again it is super cheap to camp here so having activities would make it more expensive. All in all we had a great time and will certainly return I the future and have already recommended the site to many people.

  443. Beautiful camp site

Peaceful, quiet camp site with excellent facilities & a great little shop selling locally made products. The shower/toilet facilities were clean, modern, warm & draught free. Great to have a large communal fridge for our essentials and a freezer for the ice blocks. I loved the caravan selling hot chocolate and pain au chocolate in the morning. Very helpful, friendly & informative camp site owner. Having a pub in the village of Husthwaite would be the icing on the cake for us, I hear the renovation is due to be completed next year when we will definitely return.

  444. 4th Visit

We have enjoyed another 3 wonderful nights at this brilliant site. Love being here, it’s out 4th visit, feel so relaxed as soon as the tent is up. The site is fabulous with us preferring to stay on the ‘big’ field. The pitches are large and of course the highlight is having the evening camp fire! At night just being able to lay back and get lost in the thousands of stars on a clear night us unforgettable. Enjoyed exploring the beck on a hot day to cool off. The little shop has everything you could need and not get ripped off. The caravan selling teas, coffees and pastries in a morning is heaven. The facilities are always 1st class, although due to the mud/wet grass, the floors in the toilets could do with cleaning twice a day or more instead of once a day. Although there are plenty of signs up and shoe protectors for campers to wear, unfortunately the floors did get in a bit in a state and needed someone to go in and give them a quick clean. Showers are lovely but don’t need to be as hot as they are in the summer months. Just minor issues but certainly not enough to put us off. Overall a brilliant site and cant wait to book again for next year!

  445. Super rural site with a range of accommodation options

Stayed at this site during a weekend trip biking at Sutton Bank and Dalby Forest. Great quiet little spot, clean and lots of emphasis on recycling. Fire pits provided which is a nice touch. Spacious facilities and a small onsite shop. Would highly recommend.

  446. Could be the ideal place to relax

The location, facilities and layout of this site are everything that is needed to deliver on its promise to be a ‘Hideaway’. We were however unfortunate to be sharing the site with a large party of 60 which despite strict observance of the 11 o’clock noise curfew could not help but spoil the peace. The owner dealt with the dissatisfaction of other campers very well and has assured us that he will no longer book parties of more than 3-4 tents. If this is the case, we will return.

  447. What a find!

Just back from a fabulous 2 weeks at the Hideaway. I’m totally torn between wanting to say to the world ‘you must go there’ and keeping it all to myself so that we can go whenever we like! Fabulous staff always ready to stop and help out or just to have a chat with (even when not at work and just bump into them whe out and about!). Best washroom facilities we’ve ever had. Thank you for a great time.

  448. An excellent campsite.

This was our first family camping trip and I am really pleased I chose the Hideaway. It was an excellent site and the facilities were fantastic which led to a brilliant experience. My only gripe and it is a small one is the parking spaces are a little too small, I have a large family car and could not fit my car into the allocated parking space one evening due to some inconsiderate parking by other guests. This was quickly remedied by Barney who allowed me to park in one of the guest spaces, top lad! We loved this site so much we are coming back next week and losing our deposit on another camp site to do so. Keep up the great work.

  449. The rain didn’t make a bit of difference!

What a fantastic place. My niece (8) has wanted to go camping for a while, camping is not my thing so when a friend recommended taking a look at The Hideaway and their “glamping” I had no excuse not to go! Fantastic facilities, wonderful staff and a great weekend had by all. Obviously it rained quite heavily for a lot of the time (August, what do you expect) but it just added to the adventure. Already planning out next trip!

  450. Great Stay

My husband, 13 year old and I have recently come back from our first trip to The Hideaway – booked it based on the great reviews. We weren’t disappointed – we all really enjoyed our 6 night stay. We were blessed with great weather for the first 5 nights. We had a lot of “stuff”, everything but the kitchen sink, but we’re on pitch TE5 which was ideal as less than 2minutes walk between parking slot & pitch and nice not to have vehicles on the camping area to spoil the view. We hired a tripod for the duration and cooked on it 3 nights – the other nights we lit the fire anyway and loved sitting round it at dusk – a real selling point! Great pot wash area, indoors, never had an issue with hot water or queuing and heated on cooler nights, plus large container for washing the large griddle pans. Good loo and shower facilities, wi-fi too – intermittent around the tent, good round the reception/facilities block – didn’t feel we needed to be in contact with the outside world constantly so suited us. Had a local walk round the villages one day and a lovely lunch at The Carlton Inn, Carlton Husthwaite. Day trip to Whitby which we loved, and two days to York – one sightseeing and one shopping as a bribe for the 13 year old! For both Whitby & York, would really recommend the Park & Ride – 」5.60 for the 3 of us for York for about 8 hours and a lot less stress than parking in the city, about the same for Whitby. Tried the local cider one afternoon – very nice (and strong) available from the shop. Bought fresh eggs a couple of mornings for pancakes for breakfast. The only feedback I would give in terms of possible improvement would be that tripods were somehow provided as standard as we did have a neighbour who we gladly lent ours too one night as she had arrived after reception had closed so hadn’t been able to hire one to cook on that night. Also, the lovely young lady who ran the coffee caravan could possibly have done with an assistant some mornings – people were more than happy to queue in the sunshine we had but wouldn’t be the same experience in pouring rain. She coped very well though. In summary, I would definitely recommend this site, lovely part of Yorkshire and lovely helpful people – thanks for a great holiday

  451. Best site we have been on

As the name states it is a hideaway. Great site not over crowded great to have fire pit.toilets, showers very clean. Good idea to take off shoes or put on over shoes to enter toilets. Very enviromentally friendly. Just one small problem the parking spaces are very tight but don’t let that put you off.

  452. Not quite the picturesque setting as shown on website

Initial impression was slightly disappointing as we were expecting scenic views from our bell tent. Instead we were faced with a grass verge and a few trees. Whilst we were aware of the no noise policy after 11pm we hadn’t realised that it actually meant no noise whatsoever and so after spending the first night playing cards in our gazebo (brought ourselves) and laughing amongst ourselves past the curfew hour, we were reprimanded the following morning by the proprietor as someone from the fun police had reported us! I was absolutely gobsmacked! These were the same people who had woken the whole campsite that morning with their little poppets howling and screaming at 6am and had their dog barking whilst tied up outside. Some people just need to know how to chill and enjoy themselves. Maybe it was just unfortunate that we chose the same weekend as the fun police but we’re obviously not the type of clientele that is suited to this particular campsite (probably a mutual feeling) and for that reason will not be returning or recommending.

    • Hello, I’m sorry that you thought the website perceived The Hideaway to be something other that what it is, that is not my intention, most say the website does not do the place justice.
It would be futile me doing saying otherwise really!
I would be interested to know what scenic views you were expecting. The bell tents are situated next to the stream in a sheltered area, as is the whole campsite as described on the website.
We do have a strict no-noise policy from 11pm and the reason I had a quiet word with you on the Saturday morning was because two or three near-by neighbours had approached me that morning as they had been disturbed by you until 12-30am.
As you say The Hideaway is perhaps not for you but i appreciate your feedback.

  453. Never camped before – great place for first timers!

Lovely, clean toilet and shower facilities Tripod BBQ available to hire, every pitch has fire pit, logs available to buy too. Just bring your burgers/sausages. Kids loved it, no TV IPad needed to entertain, just great outdoors and marshmallows to toast. Had a great time, looking forward to next trip.

  454. Family camping trip

Great stay at Hideaway- loved the layout and ethos of site – especially individual fire pits made for community spirit. Lovely to see children running freely. Coffee caravan was a big hit wit has our lot.

  455. We don’t have a bad word to say!

Me and my husband and 2 children stayed here for 4 nights. It is relatively easy to find and only 30 minutes away for us. The park is the most amazing campsite I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting! Its beautiful, quiet, clean and the staff are wonderful! The facilities are super clean and well maintained and let’s face it, you couldn’t ask for more. With the little shop on site with all the necessities there’s nothing else to do but relax around you’re fire a day watch the stars while our little ones snored away after a full day of playing in nature. Wonderful place, wonderful atmosphere, wonderful people. Thank you so much, we’ll be back soon.

  456. Two night saty with family

Return trip to Baxby having stayed previously in a Bell tent there 4 years to the day. This time we returned in a campervan. The campsite is very nice, very peaceful with really excellent and clean facilities/toilets/showers/wifi. It is a quiet camp so no silliness past around 10.30. Mix of people staying, couples young & old and families. Everybody seemed to enjoy their stay. It is a lovely, relaxed place to stay, but there really isn’t anything for children to do on the site itself. So if you are bringing kids be sure to plan some excursions.

  457. Our holiday at Baxby hideaway

We have stayed at the hideaway a few time now and enjoyed every time it’s clean and friendly there are lovely walks around the village they have a snack caravan open every morning for lovely snacks and a meat delivery around the camp site when pre ordered bbq food logs for camp fire a lovely way to chill out at end of day

  458. One night for just me and my daughter

I had stayed at Baxby Manor the previous year in a pod with my young daughter, with my friend and her daughter taking the other pod. This year my daughter begged me to go in a tent, so just the 2 of us booked for a night, and it was also my first time camping solo. Everything went brilliantly. The only small points I would mention – and I am being picky! is that I hadn’t realised which was our firepit site and therefore put my tent up before realising I was so far from the firepit. I realise that there are safety issues, but as I was subsequently deserted by my daughter as she was having fun with new friends, I did feel a bit exposed sat on my own by the firepit in the middle of the field! In retrospect I would put the tent a little further forward in what was a large pitch, or selected a pitch at the top of the field where they appeared to be a bit closer to the pitch and perhaps a bit more private. Luckily I had also bought firelighters, but that was pure fluke, so it would have been helpful to mention that they would be useful upon booking. hot chocolate and croissants were delicious, but we did have to queue for quite a while as there was only one lady working in the caravan. Like I say, I am being picky and we loved it, a beautiful flat camping area, not too busy, very friendly staff and other campers and we will definitely be back!

  459. Single mum!

Stayed in one of the lovely hut with 2 under 4’s. Lovely sight, barney was super helpful and friendly. I found it easy to take away my 2 little ones as the site was small enough that they could play without me worrying but big enough that i didnt have to worry about them disrupting others. Happy memories.

  460. Good but take a chill pill!

Excellent clean facilities, but it is unnecessary to ask us to remove our shoes every time we want to use the toilet. It’s a campsite not a hospital and is mopped daily. Lack of washing machine a big problem if you’re staying longer than a weekend which many people did. I resent being threatened with naming and shaming if noisy after 11. This is excessive as it’s not a boot camp, though appreciated the quiet at night. Although it is common for family sites to be quiet at night.

    • Asking people to remove dirty shoes or wear some shoe socks makes a huge difference to the cleanliness of the “Excellent clean facilities”. It is reassuring that people realise why we ask and that campers keep the facilities clean not just for themselves but for everybody else too.

Even family sites have noise issues especially so in August however at The Hideaway I believe that although some think “naming and shaming” is somewhat excessive I believe you’d be hard pushed to find a full site (150+ people) anywhere else where come 11pm you could hear a pin drop! I would prefer to run the risk of being named and shamed if it meant I was going to get a good nights sleep! 😊

  461. Relaxing by the csmpfire

Just back from a few days at The Hideaway. This is a back to nature site. We loved the campfire idea and as the weather was good we sat out each evening , the night sky was amazing as no light pollution. Drying room was an added bonus as was the fridge and freezers . Showers on site were fab although could have had more hand soap maybe at all basins as one over hand wash sink was more than often empty . I was surprised as this is a family site that there was no baby change area in shower block , making showering a baby/ toddler almost impossible . We did find baby change area in drying room and feel a baby bath left in here or a deeper sink for bathing would be a great added bonus to the site as most family sites we have been to now have a family bathroom . I also feel that prices per pitch should be for a family of four rather than for two adults as most pitches were taken by families this does make a camping trip rather pricey .

  462. Hideaway review

Loved staying at “the hideaway” would definitely stay again, very clean site, and facilities were excellent, Only negative was the vintage breakfast bar, ran out food mid way through the morning, so would recommend getting in line early if you want food, and service was very slow, gave up waiting one particular morning, other than the food issue. The actual campsite site is excellent

  463. Great site!

The only thing that spoil our stay was other inconsiderate campers. Pitching over access to car park, and someone else blocking access to the drinking water! Also kids racing round and round in front of our tent constantly! The actual site is lovely, facilities clean, and super cafe van :-). Just would have been nice if someone could have checked how people were pitching up. Great site if you have kids, but just too noisy for us.

  464. A perfect Hideaway!

Such a lovely campsite.good space, loved the fire pits and the site was very peaceful and relaxing. The showers/toilets wer always clean and nice and modern. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the caravan cafe was lovely. We will definitely return!

  465. Perfect

Our 3rd visit, love this place. Baxby Manor has a special feel to it…love the fire pits and the cooking tripods. Love the clean facilities, the beck and the nice walks to the lovely pubs. Wish I could go more!

  466. A Lovely Little Hideaway

Baxby Manor is perfectly located between the North York Moors & Dales, ideal as a base for touring both, as we did. But also some lovely little towns and villages within walking distance, great for a short hike to soak up the scenery. Great facilities and some brilliant extra touches, such as a really useful shop and the amazing ‘Liza Jane’s Vintage Kitchen’ serving barista coffee and delicious pastries, yum, in the mornings and at sensible prices. Fire pits are a lovely touch, giving a real camping experience.

  467. Peaceful , friendly Site = Hide Away

The Hide Away was recommended by a friend and a very good recommendation it was !!! We live local so we were aware of any nearby locations , the site was excellent , peaceful and we were made very welcome by all staff onsite . this was our first camping experience so will defiantly be returning very soon . Dave , Debs Dog Sol

  468. A lovely spot

We stayed for two nights with our 15 month daughter and had a lovely stay. The staff were friendly and helpful and the shop was reasonably priced. The facilities were great, clean and to a high spec (just a shame the showers were timed and I kept having to press the button, not the end of the world but a little annoying nonetheless). We will definitely come back again!

  469. Fantastic Place

Beautiful location and staff are very friendly. Bathroom facilities look to be fairly new and kept clean by all who use them. Brilliant that they have a breakfast van on site for those who can’t be bothered to fire up for breakfast and a handy little shop for those forgotten essentials. Loved it all and will be going back for sure.
