  1. Gem of a site

You really feel like you are one with nature here but at the same time the modern facilities are fantastic and very very clean. Plots are generous and having a fire pit is a great extra. The local cider sold in the shop is one to buy too! Staff were super helpful the whole weekend was perfect from start to finish. will be returning time after time

  2. Last trip of the year

We picked this site for our last trip of the year,we camped as a family with 2 large tents. The pitchs we chose where very spacious and took the 2 6 man tents we had with us no problem. The fire pits where an excellent addition and the grounds well kept and made you feel you was much more rural than you actually was. The facilities are the best we have seen on a site, the staff very helpful ecennlending us an extension for the hookup with it been a good distance away from one of the pitches we had. All in all an excellent site and will be returning in the spring.

  3. Hobbit house

We had a great break away from ‘life’! Quality family time in a beautiful location. The hobbit house was surprisingly spacious and very clean! The shower block was spotless, the whole place was very well maintained.

  4. Loved it 🙂

I stayed in a hobbit pod for 2 nights with my 5 year old son & we absolutely loved it. The site is beautiful, clean & tidy. The hobbit pod exceeded our expectations & the log burner came in handy with the weather. Barney is so friendly. We loved the local pub/restaurant for food, we went both nights. We will definitely be back.

  5. Top rate facilities and quiet

2nd time we have stayed and we will be back again. The facilities are the best. Super clean, modern and has everything you need (and more). Lovely quiet site with loads of space per pitch. Great layout and planting around the site keeps it private but open enough to feel the space.

  6. Weekend Away

The Hideaway was a fantastic relaxing place to be. There is plenty of space between each pitch we the added use of your own fire pit. There is a small shop with everything you need to light your camp fire we friendly staff to help and advise.

  7. Returning again

Third visit to the hideaway. The area is beautiful with good walking, outstanding views and pretty villages within easy reach. The campsite is spacious, clean and tidy with well maintained facilities and if you don’t want to cook over the fire pit there are great pubs nearby.

  8. A hidden gem

Was recommended this site by friends so gave it a go. What a lovely place it is. Very secluded and quiet. Strict 11-7 quiet rule and no music at all allowed.. Beautiful woodland area filled with fruit and nut trees which you can freely pick for your enjoyment. Theres an adults only area which doesn’t have hook up. All facilities were second to non but my only complaint is the showers, although they are beautiful and clean they only last for 10 seconds max, I know its water saving at it’s best but this I think is unacceptable especially for those trying to shower young children. Will I return? You had better believe I will if only for the dark skies experience, seeing meteors and the ISS go by was great .. Its tents only though which is fine for us but it’s a shame caravanners can’t experience such a lovely site.

  9. Lovely stay

Was really impressed with facilities, wash up area, shower & toilet. Felt everything had been really well thought out with regards to recycling & their Eco ethos. Lovely little shop & great to be able to get a Barista coffee in the morning. Looking forward to booking again, have already discussed booking with a couple of friends so my daughter has someone to play with.

  10. A wonderful wedding venue

From start to finish Barney, the Hideaway Chief, couldn’t have been more accommodating to help us while we were planning our wedding at his wonderful eco glamping site. The level of service was outstanding, no matter what we enquired about or suggested he would help us, and we were never made to feel like we were too demanding! This was the same on the wedding weekend, he just left us to it. The site itself is immaculate and very well run, everything has been thought out well and the layout is spacious and green. The facilities are unbelievable, and the village is lovely. We can’t wait to return every year for our wedding anniversary. Lots of love, The Dimmacks.

  11. The hideaway Well hidden

We were looking forward to staying at the Hideaway as the camp site had been recommended by a freind we were not dissapointed. After long journey and a few closed roads and diversions we eventually found the entrance to the site, we were very impressed with the site and the facilities, we enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside location ,each pitch had its own fire pit, the facilities are immaculate even an indoor potwash. I would reccomend this site to anyone that enjoys camping

  12. Back Again and in a Hobbit House

We camped here 2 years ago and have wanted to come back ever since. We booked a hobbit house this time and it was fab. The cabin was spacious with beds for 4, table, benches, log burner and outdoor seating areas with fire pit. All built to a high standard and well supplied with single ring burner, bowls, plates and cutlery. We just needed to bring pans and bedding. The site has a gold award for conservation and an abundance of wildlife. Owls, foxes, badgers, buzzards, and spiders locked in death struggles with daddy-longlegs’s were all in evidence. Recycling and eco friendly practices are a welcome aspect of life on this site. The facilities include an onsite shop, male/female showers/toilets, an accessible bathroom for Radar key holders, a washing up room with 3 sinks, fridge and freezer, and a drying room too. All is beautifully clean and customers are expected to help with that by removing shoes indoors, and cleaning up after themselves. The best thing about this site is the people: Barney the boss is friendly and helpful and continues to develop this lovely site. All the staff are also efficient and approachable, and many fellow visitors were regulars which speaks volumes. If you want a quiet well run rural site with quiet after 11pm and a great eco friendly ethos then you can’t do better.

  13. Amazing

We were blown away by how amazing the place was. The staff were amazing so friendly and helpful and the accommodation was super. We Are already planning our return trip !

  14. Amazing place

Came here for weekend away with husband – not disappointed Lovely quiet flat pitch with great built in fire pit and clever cooking options in the form of a BBQ for over the pit Facilities very clean and easy to use – only negative are the showers, very very short press button and I mean short! I’m sure in high season the camper van selling coffee and the pizza options will be more, we tried the coffee – amazing!! However we will be back – a lovely site with great service and fab things to do in the area! Especially the steak house nearby.

  15. The Hideaway

Beautiful campsite Very tidy and Clean Very amenable as I was camping by myself in a mini camper van who the likes of camping and caravan in club and other sites would have to turn their nose up at ! When actually it’s the people that make camping greats Could not fault the site fire pits were brilliant and would available on site perfectly kept and clean The only thing I would say is that it was a little too far to a village with the nearest pub being a steak restaurant and not somewhere you could drop in for a shandy and a bag of crisps with family and or friends

  16. Excellent Campsite

What a great campsite. The facilities are fab and spotless. The recycling facilities are excellent and as a result attracts respectful guests. It’s wonderful that each pitch has a fire pit and the space allowed around each pit is excellent. The drying room is a fantastic idea. At times I felt there was a little too much signage, instructions and rules and it was hard to prioritise / read all the information. It might be helpful to condense this down – but if it results in such a clean and well respected site, it’s no biggie.

  17. Yet another fantastic hideaway getaway!!

Every time we head to the Hideaway we feel refreshed and destressed. From the moment we arrive Barney (Glamping Chief) if friendly and welcoming, this starts off any break in the right way! Such a cool guy! Barney’s relaxed yet organised and informative style really is a skill when dealing with so many people year in and year out- refreshing to see! The site is clean, friendly, has everything you need not to mention each pitch really gives the feeling of space & privacy whilst being surrounded by the playful sound of children, people laughing and the great smell of fires and food!! There are many varying walks for all ages and abilities that start just steps from the campsite, a great way to stretch your legs and enjoy the stunning surrounding flora and fauna- not to mention the nice pubs!! We particularly enjoy the Fauconberg Arms (Coxworld) just a 50 minute walk away along a lovely disused rsailway track. The Carlton Inn (Carlton Husthwaite) just a 20 minute walk away but part of a great 2-3 hour walk. Oh and not forgetting the Tomahawk pub just a few minutes walks from the hideaway in the village We LOVE the hideaway at Baxby and the above is why we return time and time again!

  18. A fab last minute find

What an amazing place. We were looking for a place to camp for a couple of nights, but when we saw the Hobbit Houses, we thought we’d do a bit of glamping and it was absolutely fabulous. Camping really isn’t the same without a campfire and this place really gets this with fire pits on every plot. The house was brilliant and the tent pitches were great and we’re looking forward to coming back with our tent. The facilities can’t be faulted and the owners have got it just right. Couldn’t recommend this place highly enough, it’s lovely.

  19. Great campsite

Excellent campsite. Friendly helpful staff, clean and modern facilities. Defined pitches for tents each with own fire pit. Good amount of space for our tent. Safe space for our kids to enjoy and quiet environment, particularly overnight. Will definitely return.

  20. Family Glamping in Ecopod

This place really is a ‘Hideaway’ set in Yorkshire countryside. It was easy to find with the website directions and we were warmly welcomed onto the site. Easy check-in and then settled in. Ecopod was great – kids thought it was brilliant to sleep in a little wooden house. The facilities were good, and very close by. The stream was right next to us and ideal for cooling drinks. The children enjoyed the activities on offer, e.g. pottery painting on Sunday evening. They also loved being right next to the little orchard, especially when we saw the resident bunny rabbit hopping about every day. The only downside for me was that we were unfortunately next door to a very large tent that appeared to have several families in it – they were rather rowdy on the night probably after drinking too much and this caused a bit of problem with our young children going to sleep – but they left the next night and then it was much quieter. Overall I’d say it was a great place to stay!!

  21. Perfect place for quality time in the great outdoors

The Hideaway really lived up to it’s name. It provided our family with a secluded stay to enjoy quality time together in and amongst the wildlife. The environment was fantastic for making our own fun; using the river for dinghy rides and toasting marshmallows on an open fire. The site was clean and the daily recycling was educational and enjoyable for our 3 year old boys and 5 year old girl. The eco ethos was consistent across the site and the rewards of a well cared for environment were easy to see and enjoy. Barney is welcoming and provides excellent written posters around the facilities. This ensures when the staff are not around, the answers to any questions can be found. We have visited many sites in the UK and this is by far a stand out location and experience, which ensures camping has a glamping feel on an affordable budget. Great value for money and a magical family holiday, we can’t wait to return.

  22. Our first hideaway stay

Fab little stay in an ecopod with our 4 year old daughter. She had her first experience of toasting marshmallows on the campfire and enjoyed looking for bugs. Mammy and Daddy particularly enjoyed stargazing after dark whilst burning a log on the fire and having a good chin wag without our usual distractions. We were really pleased there was fresh coffee the next morning with croissants before the journey home. Great stay we will be back again.

  23. Fabulous time was had by the whole family

The facilities were the best we’ve experienced with cleanliness of an extremely high standard. We loved having the fire pit and utilised it through out our staying even cooked our sausages for lunch on it. The sausages we bought from the onsite butcher who came on Saturday morning. We also loved the café and the very delicious, homemade sausage rolls and pastries – the perfect way to start the day. I have never slept as well as I did at this site, the no noise after 11pm was adhered to by all. Generally a beautiful setting first class services and staff I would thoroughly recommend this site and will be returning again next year for sure.

  24. Family visit to site

Beautiful site, returned for our 3rd visit for a week over the Bank Holiday. As always the staff were fabulous and friendly. We love how relaxed the site is and the lack of cars on the fields make us feel our daughter is safer when playing. The facilities here are of a brilliant standard, sadly they were occasionally less than spotless due to inconsiderate campers keeping their outdoor shoes on and bringing loads of mud in. This is the first time we have noticed this and was rectified each day by the staff. The children had a lovely time playing in the stream over the hot weekend while we relaxed and enjoyed the peace and quiet! We’ll definitely be returning again!

  25. A fantastic find!

A fantastic site with lovely, clean facilities. We stayed in the eco friendly hobbit houses & it was wonderful to see & hear the fabulous wildlife. Having the extra facilities such as stove, utensils, bed & log burner made it a less stressful & more comfortable stay. Would definitely recommend a stay here.

  26. Lovely campsite

There were freshly cut flowers in the toilets and the best campsite bathrooms we had ever seen. You could rent tripods to cook over the camp fires and there was a delicious bakery / coffee shop van onsite. We were very impressed and will be returning.

  27. A lovely campsite

We loved our stay and would have happily stayed longer. The campsite has a wonderful feel to it, super chilled and friendly and the amenities are fabulous.

  28. Great couple of days despite the rain

Well day 1 putting up the tent was a rainy day but having got 1 tent up all the kids stayed in there while the other 2 tents were put up. The site was full with tents but quite which was nice. Definately a better experience than my last camping trip 3 years ago on a different site. Facilities were spotless. Made the stay even better. Thanks to Barney too for answering all other questions I had. Fantastic.

  29. Fabulous site

Best bits- excellent toilet block, use of a fridge & freezer, butcher visit, local cider/Apple juice, slime activity, coffee caravan, recycling, eco facilities, fire pit & cooking tripod hire, distance away from other pitches & wild grass in between, stream, 11pm no noise policy, no music policy, little shop, friendly owners. Not so best bits- one family noisy beyond 11pm, though this was just one night. Barking dog throughout 2nd night. Not a criticism of site though, just one of those things. Outside tap could face the other way with a hard surface/bricked area around it, to avoid mud (but this was not a huge problem, just an idea.) Maybe ideas for local walks. Excellent site, would definitely come again.

  30. Amazing Campsite!

We loved our stay. The pitch was large, with a fire pit. We hired a tripod so we could also cook over the fire. Bags of wood were bought from the onsite shop. The shop was well stocked with essentials. The showers were immaculate and had plenty of hot water. Barney was helpful and informative. The coffee and croissant from the onsite van were much appreciated. The site is beautiful and a good base for trips out in the local area. This is a great site for a quiet family holiday. We can’t wait to go back!

  31. A lovely peaceful couple of nights spent, would like to return

We stayed 2 nights in one of the hobbit huts which have everything to allow an easy camping experience- if you like camping but are just too knackered to bother putting up and taking down a tent, then these are ideal. You only need to take bedding, torches/lights, pans and something to wash and dry up with. If it rains, you can have a cosy time playing games inside. If it’s nice weather you can sit on your own deck and listen to the stream and bird song. The coffee van is a nice touch and makes life even more easy! On our day of departure, we got everything washed up and packed into the car and then had breakfast from the van before checking out (note that the pastries sell out! And you need to use cash here although the shop accepts cards). The campsite shop is stocked with some nice stuff- fresh eggs, local cider and nice icecreams. Also some handy stuff like scewers, marshmallows and wood for the fire. The wash room facilities were lovely and clean, more like a hotel than a campsite and the pot wash room has a fridge for essentials only. Although the site has lots of nooks and crannies for children to explore and also a stream (which my oldest went for a dip in), I feel the site could be further improved by providing some designated spot where children can play together and congregate- I think this would have made it easier for my little ones to find some friends to play with (they were too shy to approach children on the neighbouring camping field). Even if this is not a typical play park, perhaps something like a mud kitchen which children could play with using natural materials from around the site…. or a tree trunk to balance on. The campsite is within walking distance of a village and within about 30 mins of two nice National Trust sites (so if you are a NT member you could potentially have a nice cheap little holiday). We stopped at Spillmans play barn on the way to the campsite and had a really nice lunch while watching the children play. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and hope to come back again sometime….maybe we will take our tent next time if we are not as knackered…..

  32. Ssshhh! …… keep it a secret!

Had a brilliant stay here, so peaceful. Washing facilities and shower block so clean and I think most campers respected it. Accessibility easy enough and although you can’t park next to your pitch, the car park is a short walk and wheelbarrows provided. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Gail (the cleaner) deserves a medal. 😁

  33. The Hideaway@Baxby is a very good, quiet site with a great environmental ethos. The ability to have camp fires is a great bonus too. I’d recommend the site if you like peace and quiet anda camp fire to sit around. The tree house looks amazing!

  34. Best campsite we’ve ever stayed!

Wonderful. Site. Stayed in hobbit house with kids. Great facilities. Nice, quiet and very clean. Beautiful scenery. We loved waking up in the morning, and being surrounded by the Yorkshire countryside but it was beautiful anytime of th day 😊. Liza Janes vintage caravan is a nice touch to get fresh coffee and croissant. Thank you!

  35. Great stay at a great place!

We decided to stay here after a family member recommended it and we weren’t disappointed! Our pitch was perfect and the fire pit was amazing…we cooked our tea on it twice! The facilities were great – the fridge to put our food in was brilliant and the toilet and shower area was very clean. The parking spaces were a little tight but that is the only (tiny) negative point we had! The location was perfect for us as it is a 20ish minute drive to the nearest park and ride into York. We can’t wait to go back again!

  36. Great vibe for a camping trip

My little niece (7 years) and I really enjoyed our stay at the Hideaway. We loved how clean the toilet and shower block and washing up area were. We especially enjoyed playing in the brook, the children’s ‘slime’ workshop, the vintage caravan snack van and toasting marshmallows over our fire pit. It was very windy and so our portable gas stove kept blowing out – it took 2 hours to cook pasta! There’s only a steak restaurant in the village, no fish and chip shop/takeaways/shops and the campsite shop closes at 6 so I would advise bringing plenty of snacks that don’t need cooking in case it is windy. We bought a bag of wood but struggled to light our fire as there was very little kindling. So I would advise getting some kindling in advance and bringing fire lighters. The location is gorgeous but the nearby A road is noisy, even during the night, so maybe bring ear plugs. However, despite these little points, I would definitely return as this is such a family friendly and cared for campsite, with a great vibe and so so so clean!

    • Just in case anyone reading this is under the impression we are right next to an A-road…we are 2.5 miles from the nearest main road! I think the noise that is being described was actually combines in the nearby fields! It is harvest time and we have to make the most of the dry weather and harvest all night if necessary.

  37. Baxby manor the hideaway

This was our third visit to the hideaway at baxby manor and it remains our favourite camp site. Spotless clean no undesirable groups of people , just decent families wanting a quiet, peaceful campsite. Facilities are excellent and nipping clean. Barney and the gang really look after the place and a credit to them. We will definitely return next year thanks again

  38. The Hideaway – Rufus’s Roost

Everything was super, cannot wait to come again. We previously stayed on the main campsite which was also excellent. So much to do locally with kids. Enjoyed family bike ride to paradise farm at Sutton bank & visits to fountains abbey & countryfile live at Castle Howard.

  39. Beautifully situated small site with good privacy and excellent facilities

We stayed for three nights during CountryFile Live at nearby Castle Howard. We chosed the site due to its proximity and good facilities. Our site was in the Sanctuary which was set in quiet woodland next to a babbling brook, with a hedgehog who trundled past in the evenings and owls who circled the site. But boy was it muddy! This was a wet summer and it rained heavily whilst we were there but we set up on standing water and sloshed around in mud. Miraculously the bathrooms were kept spotless by overshoe covers provided at the door and by diligent fellow campers who used the squeegee to clean out showers after use. The bread van looked inviting in the mornings but it was raining so we didn’t queue! We would love to see the site in sun. Barney was a brilliant communicator and gave a cheerful, helpful greeting when we arrived.

  40. Baxby Manor Campsite – The Hideaway

This is a fantastic campsite that has everything you need with excellent facilities. It is clean and well looked after. We will definitely be back!

  41. Overall a treat of a place

I love this campsite. Clean washroom, spacious berths, lovely facilities (esp drying room), a really thoughtful, helpful host in Barney, great fun for children, camp fires and a lovely vibe.

  42. Family Ecopod stay

The campsite is lovely and the facilities are spotless. Nice and quiet at night. No annoying drunk people shouting and singing into the early hours! Fire pit for every pitch is brilliant. We loved out stay, would defo come back.

  43. Lovely site

We were recommended The Hideaway by a friend. We stayed in The Sanctuary which was lovely! Totally isolated pitches, adults only and it was bliss. Barney was incredibly friendly and really helpful. We will definitely be back!

  44. I love this place!

We have been at the hideaway 3 times. It has actually been an escape from the stresses of life , and although we usually come in October when it is super quiet, we were worried coming in August would mean it was too crowded. We were happily surprised because we didnt feel like it was crowded at all and really enjoyed our stay. Especially the caravan serving hot drinks and pastries!

  45. Lovely family holiday

We stayed in a hobbit house for three nights and it was just what we needed! It had a stove (to keep you warm – just needed to buy fire lighters and logs from the shop on site), a camping stove, bowls, plates, a camping kettle, knives and forks and spoons, cups, glasses. There was a picnic table inside and seating and a table outside, with a fire pit for roasting marshmallows (this seemed to be the thing to do in an evening). We took the bikes and went to Sutton Bank. We also did lots of bike rides straight from the camp site. The toilets and showers were fantastic and lovey and warm. The pot wash had washing up liquid. There was sometimes cloths but not always so definitely take a cloth (and a tea towel). There is a drying room where you can hang your wet towels and clothes (amazing!!). We are thankful my dad let us borrow his washing up bowl and plastic water carrier – I hadn’t been camping recently and so hadn’t realised these are essentials. There is a playground a short bike ride or maybe a ten minute walk from the campsite – there are tennis courts there – so take rackets if you like playing. All in all a fantastic mini break! Thank you for the Hideaway!!

  46. Fabulous!

This site is a little piece of camping heaven. Everything about it is high quality and perfect. The wash rooms would be at home in a 5 star hotel – stylish, clean and no queues for the delicious showers! I loved the little shop with its extensive range of essentials and luxury treats. We did the recommended 6 mile walk from the site and despite the heavy rain ( we played cards for several hours in the pub on the route!) we had a great time. We will be back!

  47. 5 Stars

This was our second visit to the Hideaway however the first in a tent! Love the site and facilities and Barney is helpful and friendly! We will be back and hopefully this time not in thunderstorms and torrential rain!

  48. A Proper Hideaway

Exactly as advertised on the website. Yes, there were quite a lot of rules, but they all helped to make it the quiet and friendly kind of site which we enjoy! Lots of well-behaved children doing the kind of outdoors-y things which children should do and refreshing to have cars out of the way in their designated parking spaces. Perhaps our only comment would be that the parking bays as marked are a little on the narrow side now that everyone has such huge cars. Loved to fall asleep to the sound of owls.

  49. Lovely quiet campsite

We had high hopes for the campsite and it didn’t disappoint. Everything we needed was available and we were in a fab plot with hedges and the stream surrounding us so it felt very private. Would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet getaway or a nice family holiday.

  50. We love the Hideaway at Baxby Manor even in the rain

This was our second stay at the Hideaway and they have maintained the great family-friendly vibe, the beautiful environment and the environmentally-conscious ethos. It’s a great campsite. Barney has worked hard to maintain the key values of the campsite with written messages wherever you look and this really reinforces the message and ensures all the visitors buy in to it. A couple of small suggestions – rubber mats for visitors to place at the front of their tents would be useful (particularly when it is wet (we have seen these at other campsites) and the availability of a washing machine would be pretty handy for families with young children – when it’s wet and muddy some children can get through a lot of clothes in a day! Thanks for another great stay!

  51. Fantastically chilled campsite

Arrived on a Monday evening after reception had closed but pitch information was pinned to the door for us. No cars are allowed on the grass but there are plenty of wheelbarrows at the side of the main building to move gear. It’s also really good having a designated parking space! Pitches are really big and each one has a fire pit that you can also hire a tripod and cooking plate. There’s not a lot of light pollution either so it’s great to just sit and stare at the stars. The facilities on site are great. A good number of showers and toilets that are clean! Blue overshoes are provided, but most folk took their shoes off. There is an on-site fridge for meat and dairy, just make sure it’s all marked as instructed and a freezer for ice packs. There is no longer a washing machine on site but there is still a big drying room heated by the water tank. There is a little caravan at the reception that does coffees (excellent) and home baking (delish). All in all it is a great little site and we will definitely be back. Even the teenagers liked the feel of it!

  52. ⭐️LOVE it 😍

We have stayed here on a few occasions and just love it. I go with my boys and they have such a great time playing in the stream and making new friends. The bonus for me is they’re in the great outdoors and don’t miss the games consoles/TV. It’s lovely and clean, the facilities are lovely and there is plenty of space around the tents. On this visit we saw hedgehogs, rabbits and someone even saw an otter We will see you again next year 😁

  53. hilled out camping experiance

Love this little site you can totally relax nice and quite you can lite a campfire pull up a chair and chill. Everytime we have been to the site the facilitys have been spotless clean and other campers have all been friendly. The site has a great atmosphere dont go if you want to make noise and play music its not that type of site.

  54. Wonderful cycling/ camping holiday with family

Our son and family recommended staying at the Hideaway and my husband and I were not disappointed. We had a a wonderful three day break. BBQ fire pits were great.

  55. As every campsite should be!!!!!

This campsite was a dream. On arrival, we were able to park at our designated parking spot which was as near as possible to our campsite.,It is divided into different types of pitch, we stayed in an area called Sanctuary, which offers a more wild camping experience, with all the modern conveniences nearby of course. Our pitch was near a stream which was dreamy as the sound of the stream and local wildlife was melodic and calming and you walk through a young green forest to get to our pitch. It was quiet and helpfully had a trolley at the pitch to transport our stuff. The facilities are brilliant with a well stocked shop (local ciders, firewood, marshmallows, other alcohol, ice cream and so much more). Barney has a sassy but helpful attitude and enjoyed chatting with him. The recycling facilities were fantastic. Well done! We really enjoyed our stay in every way. Thank you!

  56. We’ll never choose anywhere else to go!

This year has been our 4th year of visiting the hideaway. Ever since our first visit in 2016 we vowed to never go camping anywhere else. We love everything about this site, its relaxed atmosphere, super friendly staff and visitors, the cleanliness of the site. We feel safe and at home there. The perfect place to unwind and get back to nature, we love the sound of the owls on a night and the hedgehogs wandering under your chairs, even they feel safe around the campsite xx

  57. Hidden Gem!

We had a wonderful week and can’t wait to return. The site is immaculate and all of the facilities are spotless with lovely powerful and hot showers. Love that the kids are encouraged to play in the trees and the stream. Great coffee and croissants from the onsite van on a morning and delicious home made pizzas on a Friday just give an extra special touch too. Can’t say enough good things! Thank you Barney

  58. Totally relaxing holiday

We stayed for 12 nights in the Sanctuary at the campsite and it was fantastic. We loved everything about our holiday! The pitch was huge and we loved that everyone had their own fire pit. The site was one of the cleanest we have stayed at- thanks to the blue shoe covers! Every morning we heard the dawn chorus which was such a joy to hear and then at night we watched the stars and listened to the owls and other wildlife. One of the highlights was star gazing and and the hedgehog sitting right at my feet. We were lucky enough to be there for the stone baked pizza evening and they were delicious. We both loved the way the site was set up and that there was lots of space in between tents , cars had their own pitch and the space for wildlife. The drying room was great, fantastic to have use of the fridge and freezer and the site even supplied washing up liquid. We are so glad we found the site and we will be back. We have told all of our friends about the site and they were very impressed. What a fantastic holiday. Barney is a fantastic chief! Thanks.

  59. Peace, nature and great showers!

2nd time in one of the eco pods. We watchec hedgehogs meander about, butterflys feed and listened to Owls call to each other. We love this place and will return annually without doubt

  60. Beautiful site with a roaring fire

Fantastic weekend away at the Hideaway. An idyllic spot for a family camping trip, away from the hustle and bustle but with everything you need (including a morning coffee and croissant!) The pitch was fantastic, safe, clean, big and loved our fire pit and bbq. Shower block was the best by far we ever used, clean, modern and all in working order, no queues for a morning shower. Thank you for a fantastic stay, your hard work and high standards really pay off xx

  61. Amazing campsite in nature

Absolutely beautiful campsite! Plan on going every year. Spotless, quiet and so clean. Barney the owner is so friendly and helpful. Loads to do in he area and the onsite shop is very reasonably priced. They allow campfires and when it is dark you can see the stars in the sky as there is no light pollution. My children love it and want to go back

  62. Beautiful Place

The Hideaway is just that, a slice of tranquil rural camping. The site has all the facilities you would need to enjoy a weekend or longer. It is pretty small so the facilities are within easy walking distance. My partner and I stayed in the sanctuary which appealed to us as we would have our own meadow within a wood. The down fall to this is the campers in the next pitch were not respectful with their noise levels and woke us up quite early talking. The showers were on a very quick cycle, lasting 5 seconds before turning off. I understand that this reduces the amount of waste but this seems a little too quick. All in all, i have already recommended this site as it is in a beautiful setting and will definitely be returning.

  63. We will return to the Hobbit Houses for “Shire”

My favourite campsite. The Hobbit Houses were spacious, and with the natural surroundings (long grass and young trees) the sites were quite private (tents were nicely spaced out too). Great ethos, friendly staff, amusing notices. Easy access of York park and ride for all the York attractions (avoiding York traffic and parking charges), and then High ropes course at Bedale (short drive north) – the children (and I) loved it and the opportunity to paddle in the beck and toast marshmallows on their own fire pit.

  64. A five star hotel in the woods.

The Tree house has been beautifully crafted and maintained. It has spectacular views from all of its windows and has everything you need provided ln the tree house. It has a games room for the kids and a wooden hot tub on the balcony with views for the adults. Would definitely recommend staying there for a rememberable and wonderful countryside experience. The sleeping arrangements are slightly different from what you have advertised. It has three double beds and a top bunk over one of the double beds.No twin beds. Please correct this on your site. All in all a brilliant and calming week for all. Sue

  65. The perfect stop

We love the hideaway – it’s eco ethos is fabulous and Barney is doing a wonderful job in recycling/reducing waste. Leftover food waste now goes to his hens!! Leftover tinned food goes to the local church for distributing- brilliant!! The shop is well stocked with food & drinks – the caravan on site supplies coffees and croissants first thing too. There are lovely walks to do straight from the campsite- with a lovely pub at Coxwold within easy walking distance. Each pitch gets a campfire which we just love, the wash facilities are really clean and modern, there’s a drying room for all your wet gear and in the kitchen as well as washing up facilities there’s a fridge and a freezer. Honestly you couldn’t ask for more!!

  66. Thank you for a great holiday

It all depends what your looking for on your holiday. We loved our stay at the Hideaway. We had great giggles over the campfire in the rain and in the sun. The shower facilities where very welcomed when we returned from a days walk in the rain. Friendly people. A great rural location. Thank you Barney it was a great get away for all of us.

  67. Non camper enjoyed stay

2 nights camping after 26 year gap. Great clean facilities which was the clincher. Quiet friendly site. This non camper will definitely be returning!

  68. Great ethos.

wonderful campsite, great to have a real fire as well as a sustainable focus. coffee and pastries were great also. a definate drive to large attractions but surrounded by wonderful walks.

  69. Holiday

Very clean and good washing facilities. Only thing is you can’t play music anytime (not even quietly), which wasn’t the best when we were in a small group. Other than that, great location.

  70. Lovely!

Had a fantastic stay in the Sanctuary. Loved having our own pitch in the woods – very peaceful and secluded. Toilet facilities were very clean. Surrounding area was beautiful. A really special stay, thank you!

  71. North Yorkshire’s finest

We have been looking forward to our stay in Rufus Roost for a very long time, we ere not disappointed, the location, views and nearby attractions all exceeded our expectations, Barney and staff couldn’t do enough to make our stay a pleasant one. The hot tub and pizza oven went down well as did the slide and outside barbecue pit. Well done everyone involved you have a real treasure here.

  72. Haven

We love this place. Everything has been so well thought out and planned. It is beautiful and peaceful. The kids live in the stream and we live by the fire pit!

  73. Great site

This campsite is really lovely. The tents are spaced out and you are not on top of each other like other sites. The fire pits are brilliant and the washing facilities are lovely and clean. There are lots of little touches to try and keep the site nice for everyone. We were a larger group and we had a great time. No negatives. Would definitely go again.

  74. Fabulous

What a fabulous campsite for real organic fun. Kids loved playing in the long grass collecting the seeds. Spotless facilities and helpful staff. Powerful showers and wonderful fire pits. Will most definitely return.

  75. Glamping with style

We all love this place, been coming for around 6 year now. It just gets better beautiful site very well managed and stands out from any other site I have been on

  76. Beautiful campsite

Beautiful campsite, well thought out. We loved our stay in the Sanctuary (adults only area)- perfect for a couple camping during school holidays!

  77. A lovely long weekend

Thank you for a lovely stay at the Hideaway. As always the facilities were immaculate, the pitches are very spacious, Barney was helpful and friendly. We love the ethos here, it is, as described, eco camping with soul!

  78. Gorgeous, clean, quiet campsite

Went in peak of summer, beautifully kept and fantastic facilities. Even though we were staying in our own tent we felt like we were glamping not camping! Would defo recommend!

  79. our own hidden place to call home for the week

What a lovely place to get away from the real world. We had a relaxing holiday and look forward to visiting again.

  80. Return trip to my favourite campsite

This is possibly the third time we have stayed at The Hideaway, it would be more but it can be tricky to get a pitch at busier times! The site is clean, the pitches are spacious, the drying room is a godsend and we love being able to light a fire. It is a perfect camping spot and we will be back.

  81. We loved it!

A bit difficult to find if you’ve not been there before but we found it eventually! We stayed in the sanctuary which was the best! You get your own private camping area away from other so you’re secluded which was really nice as we just wanted a chilled weekend together as a couple. The camp fires are such a nice touch and facilities were super clean at all times! The shop has everything you could need but is only open certain hours. They are really big on the recycling and waste which I think is a massive thing now a days and was great! They had a food bank for left over foods and even bins for your waste to feed to their chickens! We’d defiantly go back. There isn’t loads to do around the area and on the site but if you’re wanting to chill out and go for nice walks this is the place for you! There’s also a lovely lady that does croissants and coffee on a morning which was a bonus and they were lovely! I was also recommended the tomahawk steak house in the village if you fancy eating out whilst you’re there! It was 10/10! And the staff there were also brilliant.

  82. Cosy place and brilliant ideas

Le camping a eu l’excellente idée d’installer une pièce chaude ou on peut faire sécher serviette et chaussures; très pratique après la pluie ou la douche. Les brouettes à disposition pour éviter les nombreux aller et retours ! So clever !

  83. Lovely peaceful site

We had a lovely few days at the Hideaway. It’s a beautiful spot in a lovely part of the country. The toilets are spotlessly clean and the staff we met were friendly. There are a lot of rules around the campsite, including no outdoor shoes in the toilets, which I understand but can be inconvenient and comes across as a bit ‘preachy.’ But they are lovely facilities and it must make it easier to keep them so clean. This was our first camping trip with our baby and one major drawback of the site is that you can’t bring your car close to your pitch. This meant that my husband had to unload the whole car by himself as I couldn’t leave our son. Again, I understand the reason for this but it would perhaps be better to allow guests to unpack their car by their pitch and then park in the car park. It would make life easier for parents in particular. There aren’t any particular facilities for children which is why I gave that a low score but you’d be hard pressed not to be able to think of ways to entertain your children while you’re there! Overall it’s a beautiful site and we loved having campfires!

  84. Family camping trip

This is such a wonderful, quiet and peaceful campsite with very clean and comfortable facilities. The on-site shop is well stocked and not over priced, and the rubbish collection area was excellent; it’s great to see a campsite with such a positive attitude to recycling and waste management. The pitches are of a good enough size so that you don’t feel on top of anyone and wheelbarrows are provided to help with transporting luggage as you can’t drive to each pitch. We had a lovely time and our eldest daughter commented that it was the best site we have ever stayed at (we’ve stayed at quite a few really excellent ones so this was high praise indeed!)

  85. One of the Best, but…

Surely must be one of the best campsites for campers only in the UK. Onsite facilities are excellent and the camp is managed to cater for respect of the countryside and wildlife and respect for other campers’ privacy and quiet. So definitely not for noisy families or group parties but a peaceful ‘get away from it all’ campsite. However, the opportunities for good walking/trekking routes are not great. You can’t compare this location favorably with the Lakes or Dales for safe off-road hiking. The routes that there are take you across farmland full of cereal crops or livestock and while it is the farmers’ responsibility to keep routes clear for walkers, in most cases they fail to do so adequately so that you end up fighting your way through nettles, thistles and other nasty weeds. Likewise not all small country roads, which you have to tread in order to achieve any distance, have any informal sidewalks or paths so that you often have to move quickly from one side to the other of the road in order to remain visible to approaching traffic. This is in no way the responsibility of the campsite but lies with the local county council. So, in conclusion, the campsite is brilliant if you just want a quiet few days away to relax but if you’re looking for a base from which to explore the countryside, well the countryside won’t be easily explorable with the added risks of nettle stings and encountering the dangers of traffic on narrow country roads.

  86. First trip

We were very impressed with the hideaway, a lovely relaxed campsite with fantastic toilet & shower facilities which were extremely clean. The hobbit pod we stayed in was brilliant- very quirky design which the children loved.

  87. The sanctuary at The Hideaway

Enjoyable private camping, plenty of space, quite, relaxing in the woods. A fire pit for the evening, whilst listening to the Little Owls.

  88. The hideaway

Great campsite if you are into peace and quiet with nice surroundings rather than caravan park style entertainment. Fire pits are great. Wash and toilet facilities really nice. I appreciate that large areas have been left for wildlife rarther than exploited to pack in tents (or worse caravans) like sardines.

  89. Pre holiday break with friends

Lovely stay. We love the location, the fireplaces, the beck and “The Ritz” facilities. Went on a recommended 3 churches, a pub and a tea room walk, unfortunately the tea room was permanently closed, which was a bit disappointing. We told Barney and he changed the description of the walk immediately.

  90. Hideaway – still my favourite campsite

last weekend was my 4th visit to the Hideaway at Baxby Manor. It has everything you could want from a camp site: friendly owner, great facilities, fire pits and lots of space around the pitches. And it has a quiet curfew so that everyone gets a good night’s sleep.

  91. Perfect Wedding Venue

Our stay at the Hideaway for my daughters wedding proved to be the perfect choice. As we had taken over the whole site it was such a wonderful place to be. We created what could be described as a very happy village. This was partly due to the excellent facilities on site. From the toilet and shower facilities to the pods and hobbit houses we could not have wished for more. A special mention to the pizza makers on the Friday night who turned out their delicious pizzas from their well organised little kitchen, I understand their breakfast sandwiches were equally good. The camping pitches themselves are well spaced with lovely areas of meadow grasses in between which screen off the car parking areas. These facilities along with the good communication of the owner led to a magical weekend.

  92. Peace and quiet

We stayed in the Sanctuary area which was lovely and peaceful, the site was beautiful and it was great to have a campfire, there was a lovely village close by with everything we needed. Will definitely be back.

  93. Lovely quiet place, clean facilities and friendly staff

We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend to anyone! There is a strong environmental ethos which is important to me, and the site is very respectful to the surrounding wildlife and environment. Staff are very helpful and welcoming and our ecopod was lovely, cosy and clean.

  94. 2 night stay

Top quality campsite. Very well laid-out, super-clean and very quiet. High quality flat pitches. Note that some pitches are a bit away from parking, never very far though, and this helps maintain quality of pitches.

  95. Lovely and peaceful

If you are looking for somewhere to go to unwind the this is the place, the site is relaxed and very quiet. Just the place to switch off from a busy life

  96. The most beautiful Treehouse ever!!

This place lives up to every Treehouse dream you could wish for. It has been finished and fitted to the highest of standards. Every little thing has been thought about and there’s nothing it was missing at all. I stayed with my boyfriend so we didn’t need much but if youre a family planning to stay then all you’ll need to take is food and drink because the Treehouse literally has EVERYTHING in it. Barney the host was quickly on hand if we needed something answering. Check in and out is very straightforward. I can’t wait to hopefully return with my family for another experience. Thank you for a very magical time xx

  97. Best campsite we’ve been in the UK, will recommend for sure!

Hi Barney, We love our stay at your campsite. Loved all of below: – the relaxed atmosphere – respect for surroundings: sorting garbage & eco friendly dishwashing soap – firepit per tentsite – the non-obligating notes “don’t do this, don’t do that”, but explanatory: we ask you this because of that – helpfullness to contact next visitors so we could stay longer in our spot (yes we did buy them a nice Belgian beer) – Cleanliness during the week due to respectfull visitors. The only reason, I didn’t rate this full stars was due to unrespectfull visitors during the weekend. Unfortunately, there’s not much to be done but to foresee cleaning staff. For us, the Tomahawk steakhouse was not worth a recommendation. Not cozy, nor value for money. We liked the Carlton Inn much more, lovely meatpies!

  98. Weekend of outdoor family fun at Baxby Manor Campsite

We are an extended family group including children/parents and grandparents who greatly enjoyed the outdoor weekend, particularly gathering around the campfire in the evening after a bbq and toasting marshmallows. We love the facilities which are great, including a swap library and shop plus mobile breakfast van and butcher.

  99. Relaxing break away with friends

Beautiful, relaxing few days away. Can’t find anything better than camping at the hideaway. Look forward to the next time.

  100. Tranquility

A very peaceful and environmentally friendly campsite. May be campers could be removed to whisper when they go past tents located by the path leading to the facilities.

  101. Love the hideaway

Stayed 5 nights in our tent. Absolutely fantastic. So peaceful. The toilet block is exceptional. The site is clean and pitches are spacious and well maintained. Firepits are such a bonus. Barney and staff are so friendly and helpful.Never want to leave .

  102. Treehouse adventure

We had an amazing time at the end of June despite the wet weather. The ‘treehouse’ was exciting for the children but 5 star luxury for the grandparents. Just about everything had been thought about. If you want a secluded hideaway, with hotel quality accommodation this is for you.

  103. Family weekend away

We had a lovely weekend stay in the treehouse bought as a christmas present for grandparents. Great weekend had by all, great base to explore the local area. We walked to the Steakhouse for our tea one night which was excellent. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything you may need.

  104. Lovely glaming site for families

Stayed friday and saturday night with friends. Had Pizzas on friday night and did a bbq on the Saturday. Each night had drinks around the fire pit. Lovely relaxing stay.

  105. Great place to go with the family

The location of this is just perfect. You are so lovely and remote that you can not hear any traffic. The local park is fantastic for the kids and the close by villages offer some fantastic walks with outstanding views. The shower and toilet facilities are great and lovely and clean. My one recommendation for anyone using plot VE3 is to ensure you have an extender for your electric hook up as the plug in point is fairly far away from the pitch.

  106. Fantastic Site

Such an enjoyable experience with good clean facilities and brilliant pitches in keeping with nature. Highly recommended and will definitely be returning.

  107. A ‘must visit’ site in the peaceful North Yorkshire countryside

Excellent and carefully managed layout gives you the feel being in a small site. It blends flat camping areas ( with fire pits) with lodge accommodation, with bushes and meadow-grass used to give you a better feel of being in the countryside rather than a sprawling facility. Modern showers and toilets, and excellent drying room. We used it as a base to visit attractions like Castle Howard, Whitby and Goathland ( where they filmed the series Heartbeat). Tip: Castle Howard is very expensive to visit grounds and house. Make a full day of that visit. Take picnic and take a long walk around the grounds.

  108. Brilliant Weekend

We stayed in a hobbit house with our 2 young daughters as a first step towards maybe proper camping on future holidays. Despite the downpours we had a fantastic time, thoroughly enjoyed the site, and the girls were beyond excited to be staying in a hobbit house!

  109. Peaceful paradise!

Fantastic campsite with top-notch facilities set in beautiful surroundings. Staff are friendly and helpful. Lots of open space between pitches ensures you’re not on top of other campers. Fire pits are an added bonus.

  110. Lovely little hideaway

Only stayed one night in an eco pod but absolutley loved it and wished we had more nights there, we’ll certainly be returning. The shower/toilet block is one of the cleanest I’ve seen at this type of campsite.

  111. Lovely spacious site with great facilities

Had a lovely stay and the drying room came in very useful with all the rain we had!! Love the site set up and feeling of space. Facilities good and clean. I have given a low mark for children’s facilities as baby change table was inaccessible due to a drying rack. Overall enjoyed the stay and will be back (hopefully with better weather next time!!)

  112. Fabulous camping weekend

This was our 2nd stay here. We loved it this time just as much as the first time. The site is in a lovely spot and is itself a really lovely site. The children had another wonderful weekend, climbing in and out of the beck, getting wet, doing nature hunts, hiding in the long grass and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We love that you can have a campfire and we loved our evenings toasting marshmallows and chatting by the fire. It’s a lovely place and we always feel like we have been away for so much longer after going to The Hideaway.

  113. Fantastic site

Second time staying. Stayed in The Sanctuary which is a set of five private pitches and are adult only. Staff are very friendly, the site is nice and peaceful and the facilities are spotless! Would highly recommend to anyone and will definitely be back again!

  114. Our favourite campsite not far from home

The perfect site if you like a quiet, rural setting that feels a bit like glamping but in your own tent. Love the big pitches, extras like the vintage caravan serving coffee etc and the butcher calling in his van. The facilities are great, clean, tidy and a good size for the site. Fire pits are a bonus, it’s just lovely!

  115. Peaceful retreat

We really loved our stay at the Hideaway, it was all that I had hoped it would be. The site and facilities were amazing and we loved having our own little patch of woodland in The Sanctuary, the drying room was a really big plus as it was rather soggy weather-wise throughout the week Barney was very welcoming and had a well-stocked shop (with particularly delicious ice cream), you can really tell that they care about the campsite and the quality of peoples stay there. It’s not overcrowded and the shared facilities are super clean. It is our favourite campsite we have stayed on and will definitely be returning in the future Holly & Rich

  116. As always, just amazing

I love coming to the Hideaway, it’s my happy place. The peace and quiet, and relaxation are unequalled. I am already booked up for my next visit.

  117. Walkies

I was introduced to the site by a friend who farms in the area. It’s just me and my dog and I knew that the local hostelries were excellent food providers and were dog friendly. The weather was adverse, but the friends who called for a BBQ make the most of any conditions. The fire pit is such a sensible idea. The walks were not firm underfoot due to the rain, but that can add to the experience rather than subtract from it. Droves of campers treading local paths would not be in the environmental spirit of the site. Should you want further (positive) comment, please do not hesitate to contact me.

  118. Treehouse stay

We had an amazing time at the treehouse. The quality and high standard in which it is built and decorated blew us away we loved living there! The beauty inside and out and the natural surroundings is really appreciated and we had great family time listening to music playing games lighting fires and more which we would not do at home thankyou so much for creating a overall wonderful experience.

  119. A magically different campsite

We came for a couple of nights and despite some heavy rain we had a brilliant time. The setting and the grounds were natural, full of birds and trees and wildflowers. The acoustic music on the straw bales with pizza and waffles from the caravan was fantastic. And the loos/shower block were second to none. So pleased to see a decent commitment to recycling on a campsite too 🙂 My only feedback would be it would be really wonderful to have some sort of play area for the kids on site. Having this often serves as central place for them to be able meet new friends and have new experiences. We did walk to the one in the village and it was great, but it doesn’t serve the same purpose as having one on site where they have the freedom to roam and explore with other kids nearby.

  120. holiday highlights

This park is great for families who love camping but hate been squashed into an overbooked noisy sight. The children love been able to climb the trees and play in the stream without any restrictions, we all love the firepit and often cook on the, very reasonably priced, hired grill over it. There is a pub in the village where we are yet to eat but have sampled the drinks. There are many walks near by so if you want you can stay car free which is a nice change. I would defiantly recommend this sight and are returning with our friends in the near future.

  121. The best site we’ve ever stayed at…

Up to visiting The Hideaway at the end of May 2019, we hadn’t been camping as a family for a few years. Keen to get back in to it, we asked friends for recommendations. When The Hideaway was recommended, we knew it was the place for us. The site and facilities were of an exceptionally high standard and were kept very clean. The pitches were well cared for and very generous in size. The shop was well stocked and so convenient when we realised we’d forgotten a few things! We loved and made lots of use of Liza-Jane’s, the vintage caravan selling hot drinks and breakfast items on a morning. The two things that absolutely made the long weekend a great one were Barney and the other staff and the 11pm-7am no noise rule. We will most definitely be back and we’ve already started looking in to dates!

  122. Hobbit houses

We stayed in the hobbit houses for two nights, they were lovely and the kids loved them, they were big and spacious and beds comfortable, I liked the outdoor seating and firepit, it was really relaxing sitting by the open fire, wash facilities were good and everyone helped to maintain their cleanliness, the pastries and coffee in the morning were lovely and well needed and the pizza they had on site on Friday evening was amazing

  123. Amazing treehouse

We stayed in the Treehouse and it totally surpassed our expectations. The attention to detail and clever design was fantastic. The setting and scenery were the icing on the cake! We would totally recommend it for other families.

  124. Well organised, eco site

Loved the site, great recycling, super clean toilets and showers. Felt very safe for young children with the cars away from the tents.

  125. Definitely the best campsite we have visited

The Hideaway is definitely truth in advertising, it’s a little tricky to find but so very, very worth it. Starting upon arrival, the staff are friendly, helpful and approachable, the layout is sane and easily understood, everywhere is flat, the facilities block is excellently equipped, with that most blessed of items, truly hot, free showers. Like any campsite, there are a number of rules and regulations, but these are pleasantly and humorously stated, and where possible, assistance proffered to make adherence simpler (overshoes provided for the shower – genius!). The campsite is laid out in numerous smallish areas for about ten tents, with a requirement for 6 metres between each pitch so you’ve definitely got plenty of space. Each pitch has a firepit and grass is allowed to grow to create natural pathways within the smaller areas. The areas are surrounded by hedgerows and plentiful tree growth, which was an absolute boon, creating very necessary windbreaks and promoting drainage, so the pretty unpleasant weather conditions we found ourselves in affected us not at all. The owners clearly embrace their eco credentials wholeheartedly, not merely as an attention grabber, and again without tub thumping or overly proscriptive directives. OK, there aren’t a ton of activities or play areas like other, more commercial campsites, but our children (7 and 9) had an absolute blast there and have already asked if we can come back. The onsite coffee shop in a caravan is truly welcome and serves a really top notch selection of beverages and home baked goods and I was truly sorry we couldn’t stay for pizza night after discussing the slow rise method with the lovely proprietor. In short, can’t recommend this campsite enough, we can’t wait to return.

  126. Lovely location, facilities and ethos.

Location was lovely, close enough to towns and villages if you wanted a walk/drive out but far enough away for peace and quiet. Tent pitches were nice and spacious, each with their own fire pit. Lovely shower and toilet blocks, super clean and well looked after. Nice touches such as wheelbarrows to help take items from cars to pitches (cars are not allowed on pitches but the parking is super close by), option to hire barbeques and a small shop on site for essentials (with locally brewed cider!) Hot drinks and freshly baked good available on selected days from a vintage caravan on site. The site is really eco-conscious as well, which is fab, and offers recycling and composting facilities and all soaps etc are eco-friendly brands. Loved it, will be back!

  127. From the initial ‘speedy but informative’ check in with Barney you could tell the place was something special. We stayed in one of the Hobbit Huts, which are very cute (and surprisingly spacious) and include pretty much all you would need for a comfortable stay (barring a sleeping bag and pillow). We had our own ‘camping’ gear as well, but most things we brought were already provided. I could most likely let the kids write this review, as both our 8 and 12 year olds raved about the place, absolutely loving it and already asking if we can visit again soon. The toilets/showers, as many people have said, are immaculate, and plenty of capacity even in the morning when busy we didn’t have to wait. The washing facilities again were great, three big sinks with worktop and a spare bit for cleaning grills etc. The Fridge was kept neat and tidy (no-one abusing the space) and the freezer was great for popping in a freezer block for our days out. Another great room was the drying room, really good for tea towels/shower towels with lots of hanging room for the whole site to use, dried our tea towels in no time and meant no driving home with a bag of wet towels, which was a bonus. Finally even the wifi is good, and available around the Shower Block, and 4g readily available although you are here to get away from that all right :o) The Coffee van (from 8.30 til 10.30 during holiday times) was something we really didn’t think we would use, but we did and it was fabulous also (great coffee, pastries etc and even Pizza on Friday evenings). There are even charging points dotted around the facilities to charge up your mobile/batteries. All the pitches were a good distant apart, and all flat and tidy with a firepit in each (wood is sold onsite at a reasonable price per bag). The site is set out with a few seperate areas to give a good level of privacy between some of the pitch locations. Lots of extra space for kids to run around, lovely feel in terms of people there, and everyone does their bit to keep it clean and tidy. The shop is an added bonus, its quite small but very well stocked (beer, wine and bacon to name just a few essentials and all for a cheap price!) Finally the evening is very relaxed, people sat quietly chatting around campfires, and completely peaceful after about 23:00, really is a haven of tranquility. Could keep listing the positives, but best you find out for yourself. Certainly one of, if not the BEST site we have been to, and I am already looking at how soon I can book a return trip – the place is an absolute credit to Barney and his team. Basically if you want somewhere that just feels special, with great facilities, clean showers, and a place to sit back as the sun goes down with a fire and a glass of wine, perhaps even some marshmallows, but above all peace and quiet then this is the place for you.

  128. Sshhh don’t tell everyone!

It was our first time at the Hideaway and we will definitely be back! Large pitches, campfires on every pitch, loads of places for kids to explore & excellent facilities which were very clean. The drying room is an absolute gem especially after 2 days of rain! The nearest shops are a 10 min drive so you have to be pretty organised but there is a shop on site selling essentials however this has limited opening times. Fantastic steak restaurant in Husthwaite & great alpaca walks with Beacon Alpacas. The staff are very friendly and very helpful. The campsite had a good vibe about it, everyone is friendly, the kids made new friends and were worn out from all the fresh air and running around. We had a great time and will definitely be back.

  129. Simple clean and pleasant

Booked a quick getaway with my husband the night before we went as a last minute child free evening came available. Lovely rural location and we walked the legs off our dog. The cabin was simple and clean as was the whole site, the toilet and showering block is finished to a high standard especially for a camp site and the on site shop was handy for last minute marsh mallows for the fire pit !!!!

  130. 3rd visit and we’ll be back again

We love camping here, the pitch sizes are great, toilets and showers are always immaculate and we love that we can have a campfire

  131. Lovely campsite!

We’ve stayed at the Hideaway 4 times now as it’s such a lovely campsite! Great size pitches, campfires, clean facilities and a lovely place to be. We’ll definitely be back!

  132. Campsite review

We enjoyed our stay here and will certainly return. Lovely tranquil site and great facilities. Loved the drying room especially after we got very wet on a rainy walk!!

  133. Lovely stay at The Hideaway at Baxby Manor

The facilities are immaculate and the site is beautiful. Everything is so well thought out and you are given all the information you need on arrival. Could not fault any aspect of this fantastic campsite. The weather was very wet during our stay but the drying room and on site fresh coffee on a morning made everything so much better. Will be back again and again!

  134. Perfect little gem!

The Hideaway is a real gem! Visited at half-term for the third year running. Every year we introduce it to different friends and they all fall in love with it too. From the layout of the site ensuring maximum privacy but also sociability, to the large pitches to immaculate shower blocks and handy dry room everything is spot on at this campsite. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and it has a real family feel. Love how eco friendly it is. Would love to see the addition of a small onsite playground for children in the future. We will be back next year if not before.

  135. If you’re going to camp… look no further camp here!!!

This was a planned break with 3 kids having just invested in a new family tent and wanted to test it out. So glad we picked here, the camp site is well located and there is loads to do in the area locally or a bit of a drive. More importantly the campsite itself is very clean neat and tidy and well looked after making it a great experience for us all.. we’ll be back!!

  136. We can’t wait to return

Fantastic place, have already recommended it to many and we are looking forward to our next visit. Perfect place to relax with family and make new friends. We loved the eco friendly products on site and have already changed to them once back home. Malcom couldn’t have been more helpful when our car battery died, he went above and beyond to source jump leads and get us back up and running. The children’s pottery decorating was great and gave my children great memories of their stay. Although there is a lovely children’s park locally it would be nice if there was something on site.

  137. My stay at the hideaway

The hobbit house was amazing, my daughter was so excited to get inside as soon as she saw it, lots of room for a family of 4 (we had 3) lovely evening under the stars due to no light pollution.

  138. Visit to hobbit house

This was our third visit and second time staying in a hobbit house. Every time we visit the site has been developed even further. This site is brilliant for children with woodland, streams and open field to play in. There is a wealth of opportunities for natural play. The accommodation was spotless with extremely helpful staff. Love the vintage style caravan cafe open every morning. The wash facilities are immaculate. Couldn’t recommend highly enough!

  139. Amazing little campsite for a long weekend away.

I 100% recommend staying at the hideaway. Everything about it was brilliant. We stayed in the adult only section, it was secluded and peaceful… Just what we wanted. We will definitely be back and my family have already booked a future holiday there as we recommended it.

  140. Home from Home

The site was just right for us, everything was perfect. It will be hard to beat The Hideaway and we are definitely going to book a break here again. Completely missing The Hideaway since we have been home, would return tomorrow!

  141. Bag End

Had a fab 3 nights in one of the Hobbit houses. The little house was perfect for us with our 2 kids, plenty of room and everything we needed for a little adventure! The facilities (toilets /showers, dishwashing and laundry) were all immaculate. The only thing missing for us was a washing machine as we had been travelling around a bit before staying here, but I’m nit picking here. Lovely site 🙂

  142. Happy customers

We have just spent 5 superb nights at this excellent site, the facilities and the site were immaculate. The owner and staff were friendly and accommodating. Each individual pitch has its own fire pit which we thought we was a lovely touch . The site was quiet and peaceful during our stay as it was mid week and during term time. Over the past few years we have stayed on around 40 different sites and Baxby Manor is right up there at the top. We traveled as just a couple but we do have grandchildren and We would love to take them. I can honestly recommend this site as one of the best we have used and will certainly be using again..

  143. Perfect getaway

My boyfriend and I stayed in one of the ecopods for 2 nights in May and it was the perfect place to escape day-to-day life and relax. The facilities are great it has everything you need and they are kept incredibly clean. The shop has all the essentials and the staff are so friendly and helpful. We will definietly be returning for longer and recommended to our friends!

  144. Really well thought out and maintained site

Just passing through but really enjoyed our 2 nights here. Well planned site and good facilities. Fire pit on each pitch is a lovely addition.

  145. Pod

We stayed for 2 nights in POD with dog. The site is so well cared for. Staff very friendly. The toilet/showers are immaculate and warm. Will defiantly be back.

  146. Wonderful campsite

The campsite is in a lovely location away from main roads. It is beautifully maintained. I stayed with my family including my dog and 4 year old son. I was happy to let my 4 year old explore the site as it was so friendly and well kept. The facilities were immaculate and the on site shop was stocked well and very reasonably priced. We will definitely be back!

  147. Loved it

We loved our trip to the hideaway, so personal and friendly. Love the massive pre marked pitches, flat grass, individual fire pits and cars parked away from tents. Drying room is fab and heated toilets lovely. Could do with another hairdryer in ladies, one in men’s and some more hooks for hanging clothes, towels, washbags in toilets but other than that couldn’t fault it. Will defo be back

  148. Fab!

Lovely site, thought of everything! Beautiful surroundings and almost magical with little hobbit houses, blossom trees and walk ways! Highly recommended.

  149. Lovely hideaway site

Love this site, met all our needs. Would like to be able to access the river more easily – children aged 3yrs and 5yrs struggled on the embankment. Loved the individual fire pits and listening to owls at night. Will definitely return. I would question the use of the Hobbit houses, we witnessed two large tents of people decanting to their friends hobbit house which ruins the isolation and romantic nature of neighbouring hobbit houses.

  150. very chilly weekend !!!

We probably stayed on the coldest night of the year!!! Despite the freezing temperatures we were warm around the campfire..a real treat. Very clean facilities that were easily accessed from our pitches. I was in an Eco Pod which was just great and the fairy lights a bonus. Lots of little touches that made the stay enjoyable, easy to access York where we used Park and Ride to avoid city parking and lots of other attractions nearby…would recommend 🙂

  151. Quirky, unique and brilliant.

Stayed here in motorhome. Really friendly staff, nothing to much trouble. Pitch was massive and not regimental with own fire pit. Facilities were immaculate which is amazing considering number of campers. Huge effort goes into recycling and this is commended! Loved it.

  152. A great getaway

We have been to the Hideaway twice now and will be returning. It is tranquil, well maintained and a great place to escape. Everyone is so friendly and it is the little touches – like the butcher on a Saturday morning, the coffee on a weekend – as well as the friendly staff that make it a great place to stay. The hobbit huts are definitely worth a look as well!

  153. Peaceful barring the owls!

What an amazing place to stay, we are regular visitors and my children agree that it is their favourite site. Sitting out round the fire pit, roasting marshmallows, then to bed, listening to a multitude of owls starting their nighttime chats. Amazing.

  154. Great hideaway at the Hideaway.

We had a fantastic week at the Hideaway. The pod was quirky and cosy and had enough space for the 4 of us. We cooked all our main meals on the fire all week which was great fun. There was so much space that was just ours around the pod we didn’t feel overlooked by others at all. The wash facilities were clean and modern, great showers, washing up and drying room. The fridge for essentials was a real bonus. Great place to camp.

  155. Easter bank holiday glamping trip

This was our first stay in the hobbit house and we loved it. The weather was great, the campsite facilities amazing and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We did have a good view of the luxury tree lodge from our hobbit house so next time we may book that.

  156. Family with toddlers, Easter holidays

Fantastic site with plenty of space during our mid-week Easter holiday trip. Exceptionally clean bathrooms (you are asked to remove outdoor shoes or wear shoe covers). Handy to have baby changing table in the warm drying room. We visited with two toddlers, and enjoyed the open spaces where it was safe for them to play. They also enjoyed the nearby playground.

  157. Easter treat

I’ve stayed here many times and I keep coming back. I decided to treat myself to the hobbit house and I’m so glad i did. Plenty of space inside and clean. Cutlery and crockery supplied along with a gas burner. The wood burner inside may be small, but warms up the space quickly. Mattress was comfy and everyone had a good nights sleep. The only thing I would ask for is a hook or two on the ceiling to hang battery lanterns up for a nice glow. As always the facilities were clean. Looking forward to my camping stay in a couple of months.

  158. Easter at the Hideaway

Had a fantastic few days at this very well managed campsite. Tent pitches are a very good size and although the site was full it never felt overcrowded. Facilities are very modern and clean. Never had to queue to use the shower/toilet. Each pitch has a fire pit and wood can be bought at reception at a competitive price although you can bring your own. Would definitely return and would recommend to anyone.

  159. Beautiful place to stay

We stayed as two parties, totalling a family of 9. What made this place special were all of the little touches which have had a lot of thought put into them; there are wheelbarrows to help transport your stuff from the car for the (very short) walk to your pitch. There is a fridge to store essentials and a freezer for ice blocks. There are ample USB ports to charge phones. The shower facilities are impeccably kept and were lovely and warm. As for the site itself, it was beautifully well kept, ample room between pitches, peaceful (even with our brood of kids running round) and all in all had a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back!

  160. Always a great stay!

We’ve been coming back for a few years now and The Hideaway never disappoints. Perfect for children of all ages. We love it and have introduced many friends to the site too. Great facilities and plenty of space even when the site is full.

  161. Fabulous site- great atmosphere

We had a wonderful bank holiday weekend here. The site feels friendly & has everything you need for a quiet but family friendly camping break. Our friends stayed in a hobbit house which was really well equipped. The shop is excellent & Barney was super helpful. The bathroom block was very clean & warm. The site has a nice stream, rope swing and enough space for kids to ride around with patches of grass to play a few Games. The fire pits on each pitch were great for roasting marshmallows & bbq’ing. There is a nice easy 5min walk to the local charming village with a good steakhouse. Sutton bank (20mins drive) has a great few bike trails/ walks for families & a good cafe. We really felt like we were on holiday. We’ll be back!

  162. Yet another fantastic hideaway break!

Yet another fantastic stay at the Hideaway@ Baxby!!! efficient service from booking to checking out, Barney is always friendly, informative, and makes you feel welcome. We had a great couple of nights there over Easter 2019 and will certainly be back again this year. This place has something for everyone, cleverly spaced out pitches, ambiance, clean and safe amenities along with a great shop stocked with all you need. especially the Baxby manor homemade cider- a must!!! Thanks again Barney & Baxby for making us feel welcome and like we were coming home.

  163. Fantastic holiday-park type campsite

Was perfect for me and family, including a 5 year old, for 2 nights over Easter weekend. We like our share of wilder camping but when you want something a little more ‘comfortable’ this place is great. Very well looked after and very well run. I also have to mention the incredibly friendly customer service that Barney gave while we were there. We also made a mistake with the booking which he went above and beyond to sort out for us.

  164. Another fabulous stay

Love the tranquillity and beautiful surroundings of the Hideaway it is such a treat to enjoy a relaxing few days here. If you feel like having someone else do the cooking for you the newly opened Tomahawk steak house just up the road really is lush.

  165. Hobbit house

Loved our hobbit house. Cosy but enough room for four of us. Shower block warm and clean and Barney was super helpful and friendly. A very safe peaceful place

  166. Fantastic campsite

We stayed for 4 nights in a tent, we were impressed with the size of the pitch for the tent, we didn’t feel that we were on top of our neighbours, loved how the site was separated into sections so felt that there was plenty of space. Cars not allowed on the grass and had own designated parking space, wheel barrows were provided to use to transport your belongings. The toilet/shower facilities were amazing, we are spoilt now for other campsites, everything was clean and the toilet/shower area was warm, you either took your shoes off or put blue covers over shoes which helped keep the area clean. We walked to Carlton Husthwaite from the campsite which was about a 30 minute walk and had a lovely pub lunch, also kids play area was just back up the lane at Husthwaite. Would definitely go again

  167. Another peaceful holiday

As always, a trip to this campsite left us both feeling refreshed and relaxed. We have been using this site for many years, since it first opened in fact. We do tend to go through the week as it is quieter than the weekends. The facilities are fantastic, the best that I’ve ever seen and the pitches re all good sized and spaced well apart and each pitch has its own firepit. Logs are available on site as well as kindling. the shop has a limited range of goodies and necessities but Thirsk is about a 25 minutes drive away and Easingwold about 15 minutes away

  168. Peace at last

Well we had the weather, our first camping trip of the year is always without the little one in tow to make sure all our kit is present and correct. A lovely site hidden away with individual pitches with natural borders. outstanding cleanliness of washing facilities and helpfulness of staff. Despite having the weather we made good use of the fire pits which where permanent and there was one per pitch as far as we could see. It was lovely eating our breakfast around the fire on the mornings we were there. Locally we visited the Tomohawk steakhouse in Husthwaite(10mins wall) which unfortunately didn’t allow dogs and didn’t have a bar. We dined at the Carlton inn which catered for both and had exceptional food! A bit further away (30-40mins walk) but a simple one track walk. One thing that you should be aware of is that you cannot drive up to your pitch and the site looks much better for it. You can get close though and wheel barrows are available to help in off loading your camp equipment. 5* experience, I would say especially for couples or families looking for a base.

  169. Fantastic Family Break

We spent 3 wonderful nights in a Hobbit Hut with our two young children ( 6&7). The wash rooms were spotless and the site was beautiful and very peaceful. From the park you are well located to have great days out to York Harrogate or Knaresborough ( all within about 30 minute drive) we loved our hut and will definitely be back again soon. Thanks Barney

  170. Wholesome time. Bring blankets.

Barney the owner was fantastic source of local knowledge and very relaxed person to speak to. The facilities were brilliant. Clean and warm. Although it would be nice if the shower lasted longer than 5 seconds at a time. Would have been good to know how properly to light the fire/stove the first night. It’s nice to be at a site that concentrated on the environment and balancing the needs of a camper. Seriously recommend it.

  171. The perfect Hideaway

Always have a great time here. Lovely walks in the Howardian Hills and Sutton Bank is minutes away for some lovely family friendly cycling.

  172. Brilliant

Beautiful place. Facilities were immaculate. Staff on site very help. Whole site very clean and tidy. Lovely little place for a getaway. Would definitely recommend and most definitely would go again!

  173. Wonderful stay

From the first communication (at nearly midnight when the website wouldn’t let me book a single night’s stay!), to the attention to detail and high quality of all the facilities and the flexibility of allowing us to arrive after hours (having decided to return when our plans went awry), this campsite was superb! Being able to have a campfire was the icing on the cake.

  174. Wonderful weekend away in one of the Family EcoPods

We stayed for a weekend in a family EcoPod, albeit there was only two of us staying. When we got there we was greeted by a friendly and welcoming member of staff, we got everything set up very swiftly and easily, as it was our first time visiting the site they gave us a lot of information about not just the facilities of the site, but about the local attractions nearby. The pod itself was absolutely stunning inside and out, highly recommended, very clean, the only thing i would advise is that, as it was quite a chilly evening, bring plenty of duvets as it got very cold! That didn’t bother us though. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who is indecisive!!!

  175. Wonderful 2 days

It was a family 2 day break and it was wonderful. Everything was spot on. The cleanliness of the site and amenities were just fabulous. Would certainly recommend without hesitation.

  176. Pretty, friendly, welcoming and great value

Only stayed for one night but the place was very pretty, great facilities (and very clean), little shop with anything you might need that you’ve forgotten. Recycling centre for the eco conscious among us. Firepit with every pitch and you can buy logs from the site also at a reasonable price. Friendly, lovely staff who were very accommodating. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning. Thank you

  177. Hobbit House

We camp at the Hideaway each summer for 2 weeks, but this week had a 2 night break in a Hobbit House. We were as equally impressed!! Of course the facilities are the same whatever you sleep in and they are second to none. We constantly recommend the Hideaway to all our friends.

  178. Hobbit hoose

This was our first visit to the hideaway on a1 night stay , very very impressed with the washroom , cleaning , toilet facilities. Great overall location and neatly spread out site . We love the eco friendly nature of the site . X

  179. A return trip to the hideaway

The hideaway is a place I don’t like to leave. The pitches are huge, campires brilliant and the bathroom facilities are excellent. The bathrooms are spotlessly clean and warm in cooler weather. There is also a drying room which is a brilliant idea with our British weather. On this trip we did some pretty, local walks, a trip to Whitby and a day in York so there’s lots of variety.

  180. English safari

We spent a week on our first adventure and visited 4 sites during the week so we can compare….. The Hideaway was leagues ahead of the others in every respect (except perhaps the view at Robin Hoods Bay). The main log cabin which houses facilities is stunning in both useability and cleanliness. We will return soon!! Thanks Barney!!

  181. The Hideaway is fantastic, beautiful place to stay. Really Quiet and relaxing, the kids had lots of fun exploring and looking for bugs, birds and places to hide. It’s was perfect sat by the fire on the evening, watching the stars. The facilities were impeccable, I was blown away at just how clean and organised everything was, we were only there one night so didn’t get to use all the amenities but it seemed everything was catered for, I think a family could happily camp here for a good week or two and not crave for those home comforts to much.

  182. hideaway hobbit house

Stayed for a couple of nights in a hobbit house. Great experience. Spacious with a log burner and sleeping for four and dining facilities. No fridge in house but shared fridge in main building where shop, showers, toilets and washing up facilities are. Nice patio area with log burner. Great green site with good ethics and values of respect. Recommend to anyone – unless your a noisy disrespectful dumper 😉

  183. Lovely site tucked away in the countryside. Facilities were spotless and some of the best we have seen camping. Good access to numerous places so would visit again

  184. A real Hideaway

The park had large electric pitches, with fire pits and good tree/hedge cover. There was a cool vibe, eco friendly and very unspoiled feel to the Hideaway. Staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly! Would recommend it.

  185. A cheeky one night stay

We stayed here on the way down to Center Parcs in Nottingham with the family in one of the Hobbit Houses. Great facilities, a friendly welcome and all in all a fantastic place to stay. The kids had a ball and can’t wait to come back again.

  186. Lovely, welcoming, eco-conscious site.

I booked the Hideaway for a 2 night stay for my myself and partner and another couple. Upon arrival, we were given a choice of plots and due to the weather (Storm Callum) the owner suggested we stay in a sheltered area, which was really helpful. The site is so clean, well maintained and accessible. The ability to have a fire pit is really nice too. The only downside was the limited amenities in the surrounding town but there’s towns a little further out which have more going on. We’ve recommended this site to a number of people and have already discussed returning ourselves…maybe to a hobbit house next time!

  187. We were lucky enough to book our stay during a quiet period, as the season was coming to an end. We stayed for four nights, and on the final night we had the whole campsite to ourselves! On arrival, we were greeted with a friendly welcome from the owner, Barney. He gave us all the necessary information and made us feel at home. We stayed in one of the Eco Pods, which doesn’t have electricity/heating, but we found it comfortable enough, even when the temperature dropped to one degree! All pitches/pods come with their own fire pit, and wood is available on site at a very reasonable price. The pod has a double bed, seating and decking area. We lit the pod with tea lights, making it very cosy inside. The facilities on site were exceptional; very clean and modern. Toilets and showers are cleaned daily around midday, even when we were the only people here! The drying room is always toasty, the pot wash area provided washing up liquid (eco friendly, cruelty free and vegan!) and the fridge/freezers where free to use. There is an extensive refuse area with clearly labelled bins for recycling. When ever we needed to talk to someone, or ask for information, the staff (Barney/Katie) where exceptionally friendly and helpful, and willing to give us all the time needed, without feeling like we were imposing. We did find that occasionally the sat-nav (Waze app) would bring us through the private adjoining land, down a dirt track. Barney has put signs up at this turning telling you to ‘ignore your sat-nav,’ but we missed this the first time! If you use this app, we have updated it to stop anyone else going down this route. The site it situated perfectly between all the local attractions, with just a 30m drive into York. We loved our stay at The Hideaway at Baxby Manor, and will definitely be returning to try out the Hobbit pods!

  188. Relaxing family time

We were lucky to have a cloud free night… we roasted marsh mallows on the fire and looked at the stars…. it was a complete change to our usual weekend routine! The hut was warm and dry… we will definately return!!

  189. Camping the way it’s supposed to be.

Good level pitches and areas separated by hedges/trees so feels small and secluded. Each has its own fire pit which was nice. Small shop with essentials. Excellent facilities though some toilets and shower were locked, to minimise cleaning I assume which meant some queuing in the morning. Narrow lane approach which was not difficult even for a novice Motorhome driver, not far off the A19 so great location for exploring and walking or 25mins drive into York. No cars allowed next to the tents but parking was close enough not to cause a problem. A bit pricey if you want EHU but a site I would recommend

  190. An idyllic retreat

All aspects of the site were so good. The facilities were great and Barney was so friendly and helpful. The little shop is very well stocked with camping essentials. Addition of a fridge and freezer was a bonus! The Sanctuary area was so idyllic and peaceful. We loved being able to have a fire pit and bbq. We were alongside the river and saw lots of wildlife and the birds chorus in the mornings was wonderful. We walked to Plum and Partridge in the village which has beautiful decor and amazing menu. We also did longer walk to pub in Carlton Husthwaite for a drink which has a lovely beer garden. We drove to Sutton Bank to walk to the White Horse. All in all a perfect getaway which we’d highly recommend.

  191. reat Campsite

Second time stayed here facilities beautifully clean and modern Countryside setting out of the hustle and bustle Camped with motorhome but the Hobbit houses look fun for next time Most campsites don’t allow camp fires but The Hideaway provides great fire pits for each pitch

  192. A top place with top staff

This was my 6th stay at the Hideaway and still love the place. The facilities are fantastic and there is so much to do in and around the area. This year we stayed in one of the new hobbit houses……. they are amazing. So much space in them and perfect for my 14 month old who thoroughly enjoyed her glamping trip. There is everything you need in the hobbit houses to make your holiday a good one from plates and cutlery to a gas stove and log burner and the beds are extremely comfy, slept very well. We were nice and cosy with the log burner going. Would highly recommend giving a hobbit house a try, the pods and tent pitches are fab too. Get booked up now 😊

  193. Can’t wait until next time

Wonderful in every aspect, the cleanest washrooms we’ve ever experienced. Great space between pitches, too much to mention as it is all awesome

  194. hideaway – a great find

i thought the site was excellent i like the efforts made to protect the environment The facilities were immaculate The pitches give plenty of room and its nice to have the fire pits Great access to walks from the campsite Also very sheltered – useful when we had the storm that we had last week

  195. Great Campsite

This is a lovely campsite with excellent facilities. Having to remove your outdoor shoes or using the provided shoe covers before entering the shower/toilet block is a great idea. Unfortunately not everyone adhered to the request! Great that they provide recycling bins and having somewhere to dry your towel after a shower was most welcome.

  196. Lovely through and through

Enjoyed a last minute overnight stay in our campervan, and it was lovely in every way, we’ll be back, and hope to stay in a Hobbity Hole place too, one time.

  197. My favourite campsite!!

The site was excellent…all pitches were within close proximity to the facilities (as apposed to the usual camping lot of being relegated to a far flung field beyond rows of caravans) The facilities were clean and had a nice new feel to them, and the fire pits on each pitch were a welcome bonus. The camps views on the environment and recycling are admirable. I only wish we could have stayed longer!

  198. Nice campsite that allow open fires

We were looking for a campsite in North Yorkshire that allows fires and offered a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, and the Sanctuary area at the Hideaway@Baxby Manor did not disappoint. The Hideaway itself has good toilets, showers and pot washing facilities. These were all clean and well maintained. The main building also has a drying room and points which you can use to charge a mobile phone. The small shop/office had some essentials in case you run out, this is also the place to get logs for a fire. The Sanctuary is the adult only area of the campsite and has a small number of secluded pitches. We stayed on pitch T30 which is the furthest pitch from the facilities so very quiet, it was lovely to be able to sit around the fire in the evening watching bats flying overhead and listening to the sounds of the wildlife. You cannot get a vehicle close to the pitches in the Sanctuary so you need to carry all your equipment along a track through the trees, though a trolly is left on each pitch to help make this easier. The Hideaway has an eco ethos and provides eco liquid soap in the toilets and eco washing up liquid in the pot wash, hopefully, they will install an electric vehicle charging point in the future as access to one of these would have been useful for me and I am sure it would be for others in the future. We enjoyed our weeks stay and I would recommend this site to anyone looking for a campsite in this part of Yorkshire. If you drink do try the local cider sold in the site shop.

  199. Fresh air and peace

Top notch. Brilliant facililites. Spotless. Loved the fact everyone is politely asked to wipe down the sinks ater use…. and they did. Shoe covers or bare feet to keep the floors clean. Really spacious pitches with occassional hedges and different levels of grass height so it doesnt feel like a field. The hobbit houses looked amazing. What an adventure. Maybe next time. Would go again and recommend

  200. Little Gem

An idyllic campsite in the middle of no where. Somewhere lovely to get away from it all. We loved watching the stars at night sat round the fire. Facilities were immaculately clean, loved being able to recycle everything and the pitches were lovely and spacious. Definitely will stay again when we are in the area.

  201. Perfect retreat.

Stayed atThe beginning of September with my daughter. We had one of the 5 hobbit houses and were lucky enough to be the only occupants! Not coming to Yorkshire for the weather, we got lucky.! Had three perfect days and nights. We were able to enjoy the benefits of the fire pit and the log burner. The beds were comfortable and hobbit houses adequately equipped. The facilities in the communal block was 2nd to none. Fabulous showers and washrooms, great pot wash area (with mobile phone charging point ) And a fantastic drying room, which in the cooler weather is excellent for drying towels. The idea of wearing overshoes in the shower rooms and the available J cloth’s for wiping down basins kept the washrooms spotless, so well worth the effort . The Night skies in the Yorkshire moors are spectacular and we spent one evening laying on a picnic blanket stargazing. We did a short walk around the village, which was very pretty. (Directions available from the site office) . Plenty of things to see and do locally and close enough to York. (Suggest the park-and-ride). Look out for the reductions in September as this made our stay very reasonable. Thank you Barney for a lovely stay.

  202. The Hideaway

A camping trip with my 9 year old son, we wanted a campsite that was a ‘get away from it all feel’ Only a short drive from York, but it really did live up to our expectations, loved the fire pits where my son lit his own fire. The washing block was spotless, and had all the facilities required. Would thoroughly recommend, and will definitely be back.

  203. Natural

Amazing site ,peace, tranquil surrounded by everything natural and lots of open areas.Great having the fire pit…sitting out under the night sky ..candles vino ….blanket hat and gloves…but fabulous.A must place to go to get away and unwind .

  204. Gem of a Campsite

We stayed here for 2 nights and loved it. The facilities were great and immaculate. I really loved the drying room what a fab idea. The owner was extremely helpful when we needed an extension to our hook up and air bed pumps providing them for no extra charge! Site is very spacious and everyone has enough privacy. Each pitch has a fire pit and you can bring your own wood which is a bonus! The only very small downside was wheelbarrowing our tent and belongings back and forth from the car. However we completely understand the set up and reasons for this and it definitely does not put us off returning. Thanks for a great stay!

  205. Best campsite ever

What a great campsite. Very clean facilities, friendly staff, great location, just brilliant. The Deli in easingwold craft delicious pizza’s. I will definitely be returning to the hideaway at Baxby manor.

  206. Great location, friendly and helpfull staff

Had a really great time. However it’s a busy site and lots off children. We will come back but maybe out of season and will try the eco huts

  207. a brief stay in a beautiful spot

stayed 2 nights in our own tent, friendly and clean, very good facilities. enjoyed the peace of being away from hustle and bustle. very good ethos

  208. Hidden location. Cars not on pitches but are nearby. Lots of wild areas between pitches. Ethos really sound – fires, tree climbing, playing in the beck, recycling. Communal areas are really well planned out, warm and luxurious. The drying room is wonderful. Bathrooms clean and gorgeous. No shoes allowed in bathrooms which really helps with this. Coffee caravan, artisan bread, butcher on site and a book swap area.

  209. A week at The Hideaway

Got a last availability booking in The Sanctuary, a separate set of 6 secluded pitches away from the main site (& adult only). These pitches are private & spacious, a couple of hundred metres from the main facilities. The facilities are modern, clean & user-friendly (always instant hot water!), including most basic amenities. Open fires are welcomed, with fire pits for every pitch The site is very rural, but 5 minutes from the A19 (York about half hour drive) & local towns & villages Cars not allowed on the pitches, but barrows provided to help ferry stuff

  210. Litttle piece of P&Q

Been several times and enjoy every one. The facillities are spotless and the drying room a godsend – usefull for drying damp towels ( and wet clothes if it happens to rain) The only thing I would suggest is that Barney adds to his little list of does & don’ts is to ask people to respect pitch boundaries. Have stayed on V1 several times it is annoying to have random people using your pitch as a cut-through to other pitches or as a shortcut to the loos.

  211. Family camping trip

Fabulous campsite with an abundance of things to do nearby. Well maintained facilities, chilled atmosphere and child friendly. We first visited last year, booked for this year while we were there and we booked again for next year while we were here! Each pitch has a parking space which is nearby meaning there’s no cars on the fields which is lovely but the cars aren’t far away to carry things (there are wheelbarrows to carry equipment). Each pitch also has its own firepit, great for marshmallows on an evening and for cooking over with the tripods you can hire from the shop. Small shop but well stocked with essentials you may have forgotten. Also lots of local produce for sale too, from beer to apple juice! Can’t recommend it enough, we look forward to going back again!

  212. A little camping gem!!!

Everything about this site impressed us! It was excellent value for money, had immaculate facilities, and all staff on site were friendly and helpful. The coffee van was a lovely bonus and the products sold were not a rip off!! Our friends have already booked for later this year and we will definitely return. Even the dog wants to come back with us, WOOF!!!! Love the camp fire and all the camping utensils available to loan for a small fee. Everyone respected the rules and had full respect for their fellow campers. LOVE IT!!!!!!

  213. Great little campsite for beginners

Great second camping trip to the hideaway @baxby manor. Excellent facilities and very clean. As beginners to camping it was fantastic to have everything we needed and close together. Fantastic and safe for our 3 year old. Will definitely be back next year

  214. We’ll be back

Well designated plots, environmentally friendly and lovely facilities. Loved the vintage caravan in the morning and the local produce in the shop. Our favourite part was being able to have a campfire and hire the tripods for cooking.

  215. Beautiful site

Stayed at the hideaway a few times before & love the site, it’s always peaceful, really well maintained & just a beautiful site in general, everything is so well thought out there from the pitch layouts to the items in the onsite shop, would come back again & again & definitely recommend

  216. Fantastic!

We love coming to the Hideaway and have already booked our holiday for next year. if you want to soak up nature, have a roaring camp fire and relax this is the place for you! The vintage caravan selling “proper coffee” and home made croissants is a favourite for all of us but get there early there’s always a queue! we love the fact that the cars are parked away from the pitches so all the little darlings can run around in complete safety. My only gripe would be that the showers can get a bit wet in the drying / dressing area so it can be a bit of a struggle keeping pyjama bottoms and socks dry but hey-ho your camping!!!!! The staff are always friendly and helpful, the site is clean and there’s lots of places to visit, National trust members in particular. I would say that if you come to the Hideaway once, you will return!

  217. Brilliant night away

We had a great stay in the hobbit house, we had researched the facilities available at the site so we knew what to pack. The fire pit cooking was a big hit and the kids loved toasting marshmallows. The facilities were lovely, warm and clean. The coffee can in the morning was great, especially with it being a crisp morning. The only thing we struggled with was lighting the fire in the hobbit house, when we spoke to our neighbours they also struggled. It was lighting but going out after approx 20mins!

  218. Yet another fantastic stay!!

This was our 4th visit to the Hideaway and it still continues to impress. Barney and his staff are friendly and welcoming and keep the facilities spotless. The secluded quiet location, real campfires and getting back to nature with just a touch of luxury (the toilets have won awards!) are some of the many reasons we’ll be visiting again next year.

  219. Hobbit World

Another fantastic stay at the Hideaway but this time in a hobbit pod. Fantastic adventure for the kids and so cosy and warm inside with the wood burner! Everything you need- beds, plates, cups and even a camping stove. All the facilities are immaculate and staff so friendly and helpful. Really nice site that feels away from it all. Would definitely recommend.

  220. A gem of a site

Lovely big pitches with fire pit on each one, great very clean facilities. Only thing that I think it’s missing is a small park for the kids. We will be back though.

  221. Great site

The only place we could find local to us that allowed campfires. Perfect set up, great facilities, our kids loved getting back to basics – not a gadget in sight!! Barney’s a top bloke – would have no hesitation in returning to this site and have already recommended it to a number of friends.

  222. Amazing place

Stayed before, will stay again. Impeccably clean and well ran, eco friendly and without the noise and clutter of other sites. Barney is a credit to his industry.

  223. Campfire magic

It was brilliant to stay on a site where you could enjoy a campfire. My little one loved it. The facilities were nice and clean and we appreciated not being surrounded by parked cars. Nice friendly site and great that little ones had lots of space to play.

  224. Love this place

Camped here a couple of years ago then stayed in the new hobbit houses this year. Absolutely love both!!! Cooking on the campfire is so special especially for the kids. Love the site layout. Spotless facilities and fantastic little shop with all you need. Love the caravan selling well needed coffee and pastries in a morning. If you hit your stay right you can even get pizzas from her and shop from the travelling butcher and baker certain days of the weekend … would be great if these options were on offer a bit more in the week during holidays for day 3/4 when your fresh food starts running low (unless you are organised enough to have an electric hook up with fridge 😜). Love the simplicity of this place, and the surrounding areas are beautiful. Only thing that would top this place off would be a play area or even forest school type play area (make it in keeping with the eco theme) for the kids. There is a smashing play area in the village, but having one on site would be perfect so the kids can play independently. We tell everyone about this place. We love it and will be back. Hopefully one day even trying the new tree house if there is ever a weekend available 😍

  225. Excellent site

A beautifully relaxing campsite. We enjoy coming to stay here every year. Lovely pitch size and location as well as the use if the firepit. This year we explored beningburgh hall whilst staying at the site. We will definitely be returning next year.

  226. Hobbit house

My girls loved living in the Hobbit house and by far their best bit was staying up late with a fire lit in the fire pit, toasting marshmallows under the stars. They loved the freedom of being on a site where cars didn’t go onto the pitch spaces (great to have wheelbarrows to transport things from your site to your allocated car parking space).

  227. Lovely secluded campsite

Absolutely loved this site. It was our first family trip and we loved it. The children didn’t want to leave! Spotless toilets and shower rooms. Everything was so clean. Other facilities were fab too. Potwash room and drying room so clean. Also access to a fridge and freezer which was really helpful during our stay. Onsite shop was very reasonably proced and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. We will definitely return and are booking for next year. So many places to visit nearby which is great for families and Easingwold has a fantastic playground for children. The no noise between 11-7 is adhered too. It is a tranquil park which allows fires where you can stargaze as there is no light pollution.

  228. Lovely stay in the adults only section

Great place, the facilities are very clean and the shop is well resourced. There is also a caravan on site that sells tea/coffee and breakfast on some days. We stayed in the adults only section which was really secluded and had its own fire pit

  229. Hobbit House Experience

Grandchildren were amazed at first sight of what the grandaughter called a Hobbit Hole. The 4 of us had a wonderful stay. It was quite spacious to what I expected , more than enough room . The site was again lovely and very clean Well Done

  230. Great facilities on site

Pleasant stay at the Hideaway which has changed a lot since our last stay a few years ago. Enjoyed having the fire pit next to our tent. Great shower block, great idea having shoe covers, if only everyone read the sign! Handy having access to a fridge, especially when non-electric tent pitch. Would return!

  231. Even Better Second Time.

We like the fact the site dies not like loud music or any noise after eleven, the site is well kept, remarkably so after all the dry weather we have had this year. We love tha fact we can cook on an open fire without the need to take a bbq, we only cooked on gas at breakfast time, as I said the other meals we made were all outside. The facilities are kept as clean as possible, encouraging campers to take off footware or put a plastic protector on really does help and also means they are not constantly cleaning them when you are wanting to use them. Very friendly staff nothing you ask for is not carried out with a yes we will sort and also with as smile.

  232. Secluded camping

We booked a three night stay in the adults only secluded pitch at the bottom of the site. The pitch was some way from the designated parking space so a lot of journeys from and to the car which was hard work even with the provision of a four wheeled cart. The path to the pitch was quite overgrown and in need of the overhanging branches being given a trim as it was we got wetter than we could have been brushing against the leaves. The pitch was a little uneven but all in all a good site next to the stream we enjoyed being away from other campers. The site is in danger of being overun by Hymalayan balsam. We would think about staying here again and have already recommended it to friends. The facilities are excellent (could do with more wash up sinks though) great drying room, brilliant showers and waste disposal.

  233. Helpful staff

We hadn’t booked and although they were really busy the lovely lady on reception (sorry can’t remember her name) put herself out and found a solution so we could stay 2 nights on the same pitch. They were all so helpful. It was so lovely we even extended our stay for another night ! Kids loved playing on the tree swing in the beck 👍

  234. Jason P

Fantastic little campsite, toilets and shower facilities were of a very high standard. We stayed in a family eco pod which was great and we will definitely be coming back.

  235. Perfect introduction to camping

My daughter is about to start school so we wanted a last minute break with one of her friends and their family. The booking process was easy and confirmation clear. The fact that you could view the pitches available made things easy and we were able to get 2 pitches together with a great spot near the facilities. Kids happy, parents happy. We’re hoping to return very soon!

  236. Very relaxing stay

My partner and I, thought we should give glamping a try, we researched many sites and the hideaway looked like the one for us, how right we were, the pod was beautiful and clean, the location was fantastic, the amenities were first class, the staff were very friendly and helpful, would definitely stay again and have allready recommended to family and friends.

  237. Stay in a hobbit house

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baxby, we found the site with ease and loved the car being close to the hobbit house (my partner who had to carry everything appreciated that)! The welcome had lovely and helpful from the staff and we found the wash facilities great and clean. We walked to the local pub which was lovely. We will return in the future.

  238. Chilled out 5* camping

We loved staying at The Hideaway and will certainly return. The campsite has been thoughtfully designed so that it doesn’t feel as though you are in a field with lots of people. The small clusters of camping areas between trees, shrubs and some longer grass lends itself to a more intimate camping experience. The fire pits in the ground for each pitch are a great addition – who doesn’t want a real fir e when they’re camping? The toilets and showers are the best we have encountered in many years of camping and were always immaculately clean, even in peak season. The rule of shoes off or wearing plastic overshoes is legend! Why have other camp sites not thought of this? No outdoor shoes results in sparkly clean washing facilities. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There are just the right amount of rules that everyone appeared to respect and adhere to during our stay. You’ve probably gathered that The Hideaway is our new favourite campsite!

  239. Best camp site

Stayed here last weekend . Had a brilliant time . I have gone camping for the last 10 years . And this is the best camp site I have stayed on . They are so helpful and friendly. Love u can have a camp fire and bbq that is what camping is about. Only one thing I would say is think they could do with a little play park for kids but everything else is perfect . Will be back

  240. Backpacker Mike

I loved this place. The ethos of the site suited me perfectly. It was really peaceful, great to see the recycling facilities, though do try & re-introduce composting for food waste. Perhaps the site shop could also stock a small range of fruit & veg. As a backpacker without transport it was a bit of a trek to get these. I’d certainly return. I’m just sorry I had to leave before the Friday pizza night! My fellow campers were also great. Everybody respected the tranquility of the place. Fabulous.

  241. Excellent campsite

We stayed at the Hideaway as a family and on the whole thoroughly enjoyed our holiday there. The facilities are by far the nicest we have ever used, warm extremely spacious and clean and even though the campsite was busy we rarely queued. The strict 11-7 no noise policy was obeyed by everyone while we were on site, I’m not sure whether we just had polite neighbours or if the prevalence of so many warning signs around the site were responsible but whichever it was we certainly had some very quiet nights which we appreciated. There are some fantastic facilities on the campsite, the vintage caravan serves wonderful hot chocolates and coffees and cookies, fresh stonebaked pizzas were available one evening and a butcher visited twice a week. I can thoroughly recommend the butcher, in fact, the meats were so good we brought some home with us. The butcher is based in Easingwold which is only 10 mins away if you need more supplies during your stay. You could also order bread for next day delivery. There was a fridge on site as well which makes life a lot easier if you don’t have an electric pitch. The only slight negatives, and they are slight, were the fact that the welcome to the site was not overly friendly and that the pitch boundaries were not obvious. We booked quite a large pitch and were told that we would be told to move our tent if it encroached on another pitch but when we came to to put up our tent it was impossible to see where one pitch ended and another began. Perhaps the pitches could be marked out by small stakes in the ground or simply by leaving a strip on unmowed grass between pitches? Perhaps we were just more conscious of it than we needed to be but some simple boundaries would have removed any worry. On the whole a fabulous site and we would stay again without hesitation but for the fact that we like to explore a new part of the country when we go holiday. I would happily recommend to anyone considering the site.

  242. The hideaway

Loved staying in the pod at baxby Manor, great for young families or camping novices like me! Be great if there was a nearby play area for the kids though, there’s so much land there it would be a great added bonus! Really enjoyed our time here though was great, all the wash facilities were immaculate too!

  243. A quiet, peaceful site

We found this campsite after looking for somewhere to camp in the North East of the country. The website for The Hideaway instantly caught our eye and, upon reading the first page, were drawn into reading every page on the site. After that, we were persuaded to book for 7 nights in The Sanctuary – the quiet, “Adults only, strictly no children section of the site”. Upon arrival, we met Barney, the owner, who quickly registered us and told us where to park – unusually, The Hideaway doesn’t let cars park next to the pitches. Instead, each pitch has a dedicated parking space and include a wheelbarrow or cart for you to transfer things from car to pitch. Our pitch was 3 spots into The Santuary so well away from the main site. Our tent was pitched with plenty of room left on all sides and a purpose built fire pit at one end. For the fire pit, we were able to hire a tripod and grill for £5 with a £20 deposit, returned if it was brought back clean. The facilities were immaculate with a drying room, a pot wash area, and toilet/shower area. In an effective way to help keep the areas clean, outdoor shoes weren’t allowed in the shower area and shoe covers were provided. Showers were warm and powerful. We will definitely be back to The Hideaway, this time experiencing the other ways of staying – Hobbit Houses, especially.

  244. 2 nights 2 adults 2 boys all on a hobbit adventure. Brilliant

Relaxed atmosphere. Excellent facilities. All the rules are there for a reason and make your stay enjoyable for all. Nothing at all other than nature for kids. What more could anyone want?!

  245. Perfect Stay

We had such a great time at The Hideaway. Unfortunately our van broke down and was stuck in someone else’s parking spot. How embarrassing! The staff could not have been more helpful and accommodating. Apart from that disaster, the site was beautiful, the facilities were perfect, love the pizzas and pastries from the vintage caravan. Such a lovely peaceful site, we will definitely be visiting again.

  246. Great Canpsite

I spent a couple of nights at The Hideaway with my kids and some friends. The pitch sizes are all really generous and all come with their own fire pit making evening warmth and entertainment very easy. The washing facilities exceeded my expectations and the pot washing area was big enough and always clean. The shop and reception area were open at good times of the day and well stocked. Being able to hire a tripod to put over the fire was a fab bonus. In the morning pastry’s and coffee are available to buy from the caravan by reception – a really lovely touch! All in all we had a fantastic time and we will definitely return for another short break.

  247. Family stay

We stayed in the wonderful Hobbit houses; they were perfectly equipped and spotlessly clean for our arrival! The kids loved it! The only thing missing is perhaps a children’s playpark/area onsite where they could meet and make friends. The toilet facility is kept extremely clean and we enjoyed the breakfast van in the morning!

  248. A perfect holiday

This was just me and my 10 year old daughter on our first proper camping trip.. over the years I have spent many £1000’s in the attempt to have the perfect family holiday, with varying degrees of success. It is a joy to say that she didn’t want to leave and we had our best holiday ever. The hideaway is a bit of magic. A haven of peace and a place to reconnect and re energise. Can not recommend it enough.

  249. Great camping experience.

We loved this campsite for its eco friendly approach. It was quiet. It was really clean. No litter. Friendly and very helpful staff. Excellent facilities. I highly recommend this site.

  250. Trees and tranquility in the sanctuary section

This was a beautiful Hideaway stay for me and my husband. We had a pitch in the ‘sanctuary’ section (T30) which meant we had a secluded, green, peaceful pitch. The pitch was big, you could easily fit at least 2 tents in it. The downside is carrying things from the car to the pitch but the site provide a trolley to help ferry things. The fire pit was great and we loved the ecologically friendly methods of recycling and tree growth. The local village has a bar/restaurant Plum and partridge, whose menu is a bit la-di-da but does a discount for campers and the staff are pretty relaxed. The campsite is all flat, and also offers pods and hobbit-holes. We chose this location because we were booked to go to Go Ape in Dalby forest which is 35 miles away. Also the local town of Easingwold, about 3 miles, is picturesque, had a market and most provisions you need.

  251. 5 go Hobbiting!

Having originally booked a bell tent we were pleasantly surprised to be informed that they had now changed them to Hobbit Huts! They lived up to their name- cute wooden houses with round doors, wooden seating & fire pits perfect for cooking on! The location of them was perfect so you felt a bit like you were wild camping but only 2 mins walk from the cleanest toilet blocks & pot wash I’ve ever seen on a camp site. It was so perfect we didn’t even leave the site on the Sunday except to go to the stream, a 3 mins walk, where our girls made the most of the rope swing into the water Will def go back, either in the huts or take a tent as the pitches looked great too. Nothing better than cooking on an open fire (try the bacon from the shop – it is amazing!) & getting away from it all for a couple of days only 45 mins from home Thank you Barney & the team x

  252. Delivered on all promises

We chose The Hideaway due to their promises for peace and quiet and strict no amplified noise policy. The ‘Back to Nature’ also appealed as we wanted to take our kids away to a place without electricity or tech and for them to enjoy building fires, toasting marshmallows, exploring and adventure. The Hideaway delivered in all counts; We’ll be back!

  253. Great site

Loved this site and will return, lots of space between campers and quiet after 11pm. Visit by butcher is well worth a visit and the pizzas are a nice change too. Only thing we missed was a dog walk and area of grass eg for football for kids. Otherwise it’s great

  254. An oasis of peace and quiet

As responsible travellers we chose The Hideaway not only because of its location, but also because of their environmental credentials, and the fact that they are ‘dog friendly’. The check in process was smooth, the site was very clean and tidy and the showers and washing up/laundry facilities were some of the best I have seen on any campsite. The showers were always hot, whatever time of day you went in. The pitches are well spaced with a strictly enforced 6m gap between pitches and an 11pm noise curfew. I can honestly say that we didn’t have a single grumble during the three days that we stayed there, and would definitely use it again if we were ever back in the area.

  255. Hidden gem

Absolutely beautiful place, gorgeous surroundings, quiet and peaceful and totally in love with the fact that you can sit by a real camp fire into the night which nowadays you can’t put a price on anymore!! We loved our hobbit pod and the kids had the best time! Being able to purchase a fresh coffee in the mornings and bacon and BBQ meat from the butcher on site was an added bonus, which cooked on the fire added to the taste even more! So lucky to have found this place and will DEFINITELY be back soon!

  256. Little getaway

Last weekend I had a lovely little get away with my partner, we stayed in a pod and it was clean a nice little fire pit. I’ve already recommended to friends and family.

  257. Great little site.

Was here from Monday 30th July till Saturday 4th August. Great camp site, we were in the sanctuary t26, could see and hear kids next door, but did not spoil our stay. I even managed to get a bit of fish in, in the little beck that ran beside our pitch, I only had a few minnows but good fun. A local butcher brings meat to site for bbqs once or twice a week and the on site staff are very friendly and helpful, Friday night they even cook pizzas to order. The toilet and shower block are very modern and clean. The shower cubilices large too.

  258. A Gem of a Campsite with faultless facilities.

A beautifully laid out camping environment with no cars at pitch-side, meant holidaying with two Nine year old boys and an 18 month old baby was relaxed and enjoyed more by having a safer area to play. The boys spent time playing in the stream and we all loved the fire pits provided at each pitch, we cooked our meals on it and enjoyed a log fire in the evenings. Morning breakfasts of Fresh Coffee/Hot Chocolate and Croissants was a welcome addition from the Vintage van. The shop and all other facilities were incredibly clean and well stocked and as a Disabled camper I appreciated the ‘Accessible’ facilities and the time spent to provide them. Everything has been thought through and the owners have created a beautiful, calm and well run site with Nature being their guide. I feel like the site has grown with the campers, who enjoy it with the meadow grass and carefully set out pitches give an opportunity for privacy. I’ve camped in many places which I love and have to say this site has made me want to return to this calm and spiritually atmospheric haven…

  259. Another great stay at TheHideaway Baxby Manor

We visited The Hideaway 3yrs ago and stayed in a Bell Tent and it was fantastic. When we saw the new Hobbit houses we knew it was time for another visit. Amazing place with very very clean facilities. Big on recycling also which is great to see. It’s a great base with Thirsk and York not far away. Great place with great staff. Highly recommended

  260. erfect camping experience

excellent campsite, very well ran lovely and clean and friendly, lots to do near by but also nice to relax on site for the day.. loved the vintage caravan selling coffee and pastries in a morning and pizza on a friday night a well stocked shop plus having a fridge on site was very handy.. will definitely be returning as it’s one of my favourite campsites iv been to..

  261. fly’s & bonfires

we recently stayed in a hobbit house, which is really a glorified shed upon arrival we were met by 200+ flys, we attempted to buy some fly spray but were told its not sold on site but they would get some from the house and bring it – waited 4 days & it still didn’t arrive can’t fault the set up of the site, its spotless, but be prepared to smell like a bonfire for the whole of your stay I’d recommend it if you like camping

    • Thanks for the feedback Leanne.
Glamping takes on many forms, most are nothing like our Hobbit Houses (in fact we are the only ones in the country and possibly the world that has this design!) Glamping can be a Shepherds Hut, a Canvas Tent, a converted boat, or a Treehouse. Glamping (Glamorous camping simply means something more than a tent.
I’m afraid we cannot do much about the flies and wasps etc, afraid its all part and parcel of rural camping and glamping! Im sorry you were told we’d give you some fly spray and it did not materialise; however no one asked me for any…?
It’s not camping without a proper campfire and as we are one of the very few sites that allows them it is inevitable that most will have a fire…it does help keep the flies away tho…!
      Barney (Owner)

  262. Loved it

We stayed in a hobbit hut and we loved it, will definitely be returning with the tent next time, lovely pub just up the road called plum and partridge, facilities spotless on site, staff all friendly, can’t wait to go back

  263. As close to wild camping as you can get but with all the luxury to hand

My kids (12 & 10) and I love this site, The long natural grasses and trees throughout the site make a refreshing change to the flat lawns where everyone overlooks each other. But for us, the real attraction is the ability to have open fires to cook over and to sit around chatting as darkness falls.

  264. Very happy

I have recently stayed at the hideaway with my partner and his dog, very warm and welcoming staff. Set in the most beautiful location very happy to help always. Would highly recommend this place to anyone! And can’t wait to return.

  265. Gorgeous hidden gem

What a beautiful natural camping site. We loved how peaceful the site was and how secluded we were in the adults only section. Just what we were looking for

  266. Few nights away

Great few nights away in the hobbit hut. Clean site toilets and facility’s hobbit hut was lovely spaciouce there was quite a few kids staying in the hobbit huts but was no trouble hardly noticed them or noise at night was quite peaceful great place to stay would recommend.

  267. amily stay

We’re a family of 4, with 2 active boys aged 8 and 11. We absolutely loved our first stay at the Hideaway and it’s now one of our favourite campsites. The site is definitely set up to cater to the more relaxing side of camping, with lots of segregation and meadow. I think the boys preferred it with a few of the pitches empty so there was more space for them to play. The facilities are excellent; we loved the fire pits and onsite coffee and pastries. Unfortunately the weather didn’t lend itself to barbecue so we didn’t use the butcher. The shop is top notch, with excellent local produce and allowed an emergency air bed purchase. The wash facilities are good; lots of hot water and no queuing. I also liked the ban on shoes, so no annoying grass in the shower. There’s absolutely loads to do within a drive and we had a great evening meal at the Carlton Inn a couple of miles away. York is spectacular with enough to keep you busy for weeks and we had really fun days out in Whitby and Lightwater Valley. Great site!

  268. Great stay

A lovely campsite with friendly owner and staff. Great location for going out for the day or staying local and exploring the countryside. Booked again already 😃

  269. A little piece of heaven.

We have been to the hideaway a couple of times now and always go back. The facilities are always really clean, the staff are super friendly. They site is rural which we love, theres a little stream that runs along the side of the campsite which is great in summer! we love that we can have camp fires on the pitch. Overall the campsite is great, we go at least once a year now. plenty of things to do around the surrounding area and plenty of sight seeing.

  270. Quiet relaxing stay

Our most relaxing camping break yet – no noise after 11, not having to listen to other peoples music during the day, decent spacing between pitches, dogs on leads, clean facilities, friendly helpful staff………….perfect

  271. Birthday break

Just got back from staying at the hobbit houses ! Excellent stay and great value for money, staff were all friendly, clean facilities throughout. Overall lovely few days

  272. Excellent campsite hidden away

Loved this campsite for its large pitches and fire pits. The wash facilities were really clean although some people obviously couldn’t read the notices that say take off your outdoor shoes or put on the overshoes provided!! There’s a fabulous drying room for wet towels/shoes. The shop is a little gem selling all sorts of things you didn’t realise you needed from children’s toys to Eco fire lighters to gin, ice creams, fresh eggs, headache tablets etc etc. Please don’t take your kids if they can’t be quiet between 11pm – 7am as this is the campsite rule which again some chose not to follow………apart from that it’s fab.

  273. Peaceful park, everything thought of.

This was our third stay at the Hideaway with three generations of our family. We love the peaceful location and the chance to enjoy a camp fire in the evenings. The washroom facilities are great, and the pot wash and drying rooms make everything easy. We had a couple of really nice local walks around the area based on routes supplied at the campsite which gave a lot of information about what to see. Barney and his staff were as helpful and friendly as ever.

  274. Holiday stay

Lovely place to stay. Very peaceful. Lovely to have a camp fire with each pod and the caravan that is there for breakfast is a lovely touch. Will be back again.

  275. Another enjoyable stay

We came back to Baxby for the third time and again enjoyed our stay. The kids still love the site although they’re teenagers now. We stayed in a Hobbit House due to a lack of carrying space for a tent etc. and found it very comfortable, as we’d hoped for the price. We would certainly consider the site and the accommodation again, perhaps at a quieter time of year when we could enjoy the log burner and have a bit more spare cash to spend in the pub. The facilities, while still very clean and of a high standard, felt rather busier than in recent years, but that might just be a result of having camped at an excellently equipped Dutch site recently. But overall, a lovely and welcoming place to spend a few days.

  276. Top Notch Camping

A lovely atmosphere on this site. Very well designed to allow tranquility and privacy whilst allowing the kids some freedom. Facilities were of an extremely high standard, would def recommend. Barney and co one work v hard to maintain the excellent standard of this site, def recommend!

  277. Lovely family campsite

This was a lovely campsite. We only choose sites which allow campfires, and this had great fire pits. The facilities were spotless, warm, and showers hot. The best camping bathrooms we have come across. Good washing facilities. Pitches are very well spaced out. Stream runs along the edge of the campsite. Far enough away from the main road to ensure peace & quiet, but still easy to access the local areas and get to the Motorway. Nice focus on recycling and other ‘green’ approaches to camping.

  278. Super site and facilities

Lovely site, great facilities and spotlessly clean Pitches well spaced and fire-pits on all Nice and quiet with loads to do and see locally

  279. Hideaway 2 day breakaway

Another fantastic stay at the hideaway! We will return again next year for sure. My family love the relaxed atmosphere and beautiful surroundings. This is our third visit and great that campers respects the important rules of the park which makes the hideaway a cut way above the rest.

  280. Would have scored them a Ten if they had made one change…

The Hideaway Baxby Manor is a great little campsite, not overcrowded with ample pitches allocated. The washing facilities are right up there with the best and the staff are as helpful as you could wish for… I do have one gripe with their setup…no cars on the grass! Now I appreciate why they have this rule but let me explain. The site provides wheelbarrows for you to use to get all your equipment from your allocated parking bay (Unless you drive a smart car…it’s too narrow) to you pitch location, for us it was about 50 yards away. But I’m disabled and this was the cause of some major problems, So if we had been allowed to drive on the grass only to unload and load up once we were on our way this would have made a world of difference. If you are after a quieter place to stop…this is great.

    • Hi, thanks for the feedback.

Although due to the terrain it is not physically possible to access pitches with vehicles, when you choose your pitch online via the website you can choose a pitch that is right next to (less than 10m) from the parking area and your allocated space.

  281. Perfect in every way

We stayed for a couple of nights in July this year. It was our daughter’s first camping trip and she loved every minute of it. The site was quiet, clean and tidy and there was plenty of space between pitches. The on-site facilities were superb; a well stocked shop, washroom, drying room and shower block. The pizza van on Friday night was perfect and the butcher van on Saturday meant we could stock up on bbq supplies for the evening. All in all, a fantastic stay. We will most certainly be back!

  282. Happy Camping

A great site, perfect for family holiday. Highlight for our children is being allowed a real campfire, so many sites do not allow. A pleasure to watch kids having fun, making up games and their own entertainment. Lots of lovely walks in area, mountain biking at Sutton Bank, York a drive away. This site attracts a different kind of camper, respectful and considerate of fellow campers. Barney runs a tight ship to the benefit of all. We’all be back 😊

  283. Fabulous campsite

A must for all seasoned and new campers. Extremely clean and tidy site which attracts campers who are respectful To others and the environment. Excellent clean facilities. Large plots and We love the fire 🔥 pits. Home baked treats from Liza’s onsite Vintage Kitchen is an added bonus. Couldn’t speak any higher of this place, Go! X

  284. Amazing

Amazing place. Almost don’t want to say too much as Will spoilt the amazing atmosphere if everyone were to know about it! We love our weekends here. Recharged and relaxed. Thank you barny!

  285. Back to nature

Excellent site for relaxing Great to be able to have a fire pit to sit round at night Very clean and environmentally friendly We love it here

  286. would reccomend this site for camping

baxby mannor was a great camp site .. the manager was very polite and helpfull..the site its self was very looked after really clean and well presented.. the owner has put alot of effort into hes camp site.. the showers and toilets were really clean peacefull and quiet had built in campfire pits big spaces for tent pitching not in an excluded area u had space and tents were not on top of each other ..would recomend this site to people who want to get away and have a chilled few days ..really peacefull would come back to baxby again 😊

  287. Lovely campsite!

This was a lovely campsite! So glad I came across it! It was beautifully quiet and peaceful and far from any traffic noise. We picked the location as it was pretty close to flamingo land, but also found it ideal for visiting York as well. The only downside was that a wedding was being set up on our last day which was quite disruptive and ruined the ambience, which we had experienced the rest of the week, so next time I book I will check whether a wedding is booked and whether it is near our pitch. Despite this, it was still a lovely holiday. Would definitely go back and have already been recommending it.

  288. Perfect site in every way.

Fantasticly placed pitches, super clean facilities and staff that go that extra mile to make your stay even more enjoyable. Oh, there is also a campsite cat! How amazing is that!!?! Also, the 11-7 quiet site policy works a treat enabling everyone to get a great nights sleep in beautiful peace and quiet. I’d really recommend this site! Probably the best we’ve ever stayed in.

  289. Baxby manor

Fantastic two night stay with my two kids, loved how safe if felt, the proximity of my tent to the stream, the long grass for playing in, and the effort Barney went to so we could watch the footy!

  290. Our Visit to the Hideaway

Since our first visit the year it opened it has over the seasons progressed and matured to become one of thr premier camp sites i the Yorkshire area.

  291. Lovely

We came for a weekend with my sister and her family and didn’t leave the campsite as it was so beautiful. Excellent washing facilities, tent pitches had lots of space and places for children to play, and lots of natural habitats and wildlife areas. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

  292. Beautiful, peaceful site.

I camped alone for one night as part of a weekend travelling in the area. It was so peaceful and the sanctuary plot was exactly what I needed. It felt very secure and the sound of the brook behind my plot was very relaxing. The toilet/shower facilities are beautifully clean. I was a bit disappointed that the little caravan wasn’t open that weekend as I was relying on it for my breakfast! If you are staying in hot weather in a sanctuary plot remember to take insect repellent. There are quite a few biting flies/midges, but I guess that’s to be expected when you set up camp in natural woodland. The fire pit is a great bonus. Byland Abbey is free to walk around and very close by. Well worth a visit. I also stopped at Helmsley Walled Garden, which is beautiful in July.

  293. Spotless facilities. 6m specified between pitches and that’s what it is, no encroachment on other pitches. Although we didn’t have a fire, because of the 30 degree heat, the facility was at each pitch. Lovely little site.

  294. We have been tenting for years and this is probably the best site we have stayed on. Over the years, I’ve found that some campsites are deterring tents in favour of caravans. This is not the case with the Hideaway. The only negative was having to wheelbarrow our stuff from the car to the pitch. We’re used to parking next to our tent. I can understand why this is the case. We’re in our 60’s and on a hot day this was hard work. Other than that, the toilet/shower block was immaculate. I liked the idea of leaving parts of the site overgrown to encourage wildlife. The shop was good although pricey. There is no shop in Husthwaite, only a very fancy pub/restaurant. As we are retired, we took advantage of the midweek discounts (40% off 4 nights) which made it exceptional value. All in all, a fantastic site and we’ll be back.

  295. Just fantastic

Excellent. Relaxing. You feel like you’re in the wild with brilliant facilities very close by. My perfect camping trip. I really felt like the camper was in the heart of every service and the aesthetics are perfect for the surroundings and married so well with the whole experience. I especially loved the book exchange, the wild patch separating the rows of tents, no cars next to tents, the flowers in the wash block, the warm showers and the cleanest facilities I’ve ever experienced, the chairs and table outside the shop and the shop with everything we didn’t realise we needed! Thank you

  296. Camping the way it should be.

Perfect stay on this wonderful campsite. Love the fact there were no big vans. Really loved the pitches, longer grass around the camp offering an element of privacy. Especially loved the fire pit and the Sanctuary. Wonderful village and people. Best campsite I’ve ever stayed on. Cute Hobbit Houses. Facilities are fab. Lovely cosy and warm shower/toilet room. Just one small thing, the recycle bins are really dirty and could do with a regular wash down. Not nice pushing items through the dirty bristles.

  297. Third time we’ve visited

We visit with family and friends every year. They’re massive camping fans, but I’m not, however, The Hideaway makes the ordeal more than tolerable 🙂 Loads of space, no one kicking off into the early hours, decent toilets and showers, no complaints whatsoever – I imagine we will be back next year.

  298. Perfectly different peaceful & charming

A wonderful location set amongst trees & nature. Peaceful location not too far away from local amenities if required. Different as set within boarders of wild grass with lawned pitches, fire pits provided & tripods available at tiny fee. Very accommodating staff. Pitch perfect site. I’ll be back!

  299. lovely site with great facilities

the site was not full as we went mid week on a very generous price deal, so it was ahead on points before we even pitched. to our delight it was a fab site that due to it’s lay out, felt small but in actual fact has over 50 pitches. The lay out is genius as it allows you a sense of privacy and promotes a quiet & calm vibe. the bathroom facilities were bob on & kept very clean & the pot wash/ freezer / fridge facility was again ideal & kept very well. the little shop has basics without rip off prices, quite refreshing that & barney was often on hand for a chat & any info you needed. we also loved the campfire facility on every pitch. all in all a lovely site that we will definitely return to when we are visiting that part of yorkshire. it is also really handy for loads of good places to visit.

  300. Great spacious plots

Stayed twice in the “Sanctuary” and the privacy and peaceful setting are fantastic. All pitches have a fire pit which is an added bonus. Well done to the Hideaway for its recycling too. I truly cannot fault this campsite and have plans to return soon and would recommend to anyone.

  301. Excellent site

Fantastic site peacefully located and good space between sites one thing that would of been nice would be a seating provision at each pitch we only have a small car and taking a table and chairs was not an option a few pitches with bench tables would of been the cream on the already delicious cake. Thank you see you again soon

  302. Short stay

Stayed for three nights with our two dogs in The Sanctuary. Very happy with all facilities and our pitch. Would return to the campsite. Would have preferred electric hook up in this area.

  303. Perfect place to stay !!!

What a great place to stay facilities are immaculate, lovely and peaceful staff are so friendly, lovely chillingly place to stay would recommend it.

  304. Best site in Yorkshire

Amazing location, quiet and peaceful, best facilities – better than home! flat pitches next to babbling brook, friendly staff, what more can you ask for. Great dining pub in the village. We camped but the Hobbit holes look inviting for when we bring our granddaughter.

  305. Peaceful Setting

The Hideaway lives up to its name. We visited during a weekday and found it to be an ideal place to chill. The toilet blocks are probably the best we have ever used on a camp site.

  306. Great if you have children

Site, staff and facilities were great, however, there were lots of families with children (some of which did not appear to have adequate supervision e.g. running through pitches at high speed when hot BBQ’s and fire pits were burning and thinking it’s ok to use the long grass between pitches as a toilet!) We were there at the weekend so this would probably not be an issue during term time mid week. Beautiful village within walking distance and lovely circular walk from the site

  307. The Hideaway – a truly awesome place especially TE5

Sadly our stay was cut short this weekend due to being involved in a nasty car accident in the local area – we were all gutted 🙁 The Hideaway is an amazing place, i would recommend it anyone. The facilities, the staff, the location, the pitch fantastic. Camp fires – perfect . Cooking over the camp fire – awesome. The “quality” of guests – give great peace of mind. Campsite standards / expectatrions are fabulous.

  308. Excellant stay at a hidden gem

Absolutely love this place, nice size pitches, fire pit for each, excellant facilities and spotlessly clean. Shop is well stocked with essentials and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Love the fact no cars allowed on the grass too, makes for an excellant campsite. Only thing I think that needs adding now is a playground and it’s top of the list for me, well done everyone at The Hideaway, keep up the fab work

  309. Lovely

We visited The Hideaway a couple of weekends ago and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Facilities are excellent and pitches are large for all sizes of tents. The camp site is clean and kept in excellent condition. Lovely surrounding for those who wants to enjoy the Yorkshire moors. Definitely a place to recommend and revisit.

  310. Amazing

I was so excited about my holiday before we arrived as it looked amazing and I wasn’t disappointed on arrival. Katie and Barney were polite and helpful when needed. The facilities were of very high standard my only concern is when visitors didn’t follow the rules and ended up traipsing grass into the washrooms etc. I love the ethos of the camp and the vibe which reflects on the friendliness of the other guests to. We are booked to go back already!!

  311. Very impressed

A lovely setting a beautifully laid out camp site. The kids loved to cook over an open fire. A perfect place for a cycle camping trip from York. We will be back if you’ll have us. Many thanks

  312. First time at The Hideaway

We are used to either wild camping or more basic camping in the Peak District so were dubious whether this would ruin the experience having so many facilities, however, that drying room certainly came in handy after we got drenched in a thunderstorm and the fab shower room was a luxury in the morning. Best moments of the weekend were scrambling up the embankment to catch the sunset and finding the honesty cafe on a walk we did. Father’s Day lunch at the local pub was absolutely delicious and with the 20% off – just amazing!! Thanks for having us Barney 🙂

  313. The best campsite I’ve ever styed on

If you are looking to party all night, this place is NOT for you, if you are looking for a cool, chilled out, safe, clean, happy place to go camping with a bit of style then it is. Lovely surroundings, loads of wildlife, the cleanest facilities on the planet and chilled out staff make this place brilliant. We will definitely be back and have already recommended it to friends.

  314. The Hideaway – hidden gem

My favourite campsite! Large pitches, a fire pit on each pitch, clean and eco friendly wash rooms, lots of extra touches – a well stocked, locally supplied shop, butchers van on Saturday morning, vintage coffee van and loads of space for the kids all with friendly staff, a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. Discovered a 4.5 circular walk from Husthwaite via Coxwold (via a lovely friendly pub with great food – Fauconburg Arms) to complete our weekend 🙂

  315. Family pod

We stayed in the family pod with our 2 small grandsons. They loved it, running through long grass and having the freedom to run about alover the park. It was quiet when we went as it was term time and as they are young they are also early risers. I was concerned about them waking other people, but when I asked they said they didn’t hear them. The people staying were also very friendly. We coming back maybe in a tent next time if grandkids will let us put a tent up as they are still young. We all had a great time and the 2 boys loved the pod.

  316. First time camping with a toddler

This campsite had amazing facilities, fresh coffee in the morning, firepits, large pitches, wheelbarrows for moving your gear, small river for paddling in. It was a great experience as our first time camping with our 2 year old who loved it. We’ll definitely be back!

  317. A great campsite

The campsite is lovely – a super location, impecably managed and very safe and friendly. We stayed in a Hobbit House, which was a super little place with all the basics there. The firepit was fab and I would definately recommend renting a tripod and grill for cooking. I would have liked a place to store food – just a set of shelves – as it is self catering and there was nowhere to store anything. It was quiet when we were there and all the facilities were perfect, but my only thought would be that it might not be ideal for families if it was busy as the only place to play was the grass of empty pitches. If all the pitches were full, there really wouldn’t be room to play anywhere. There are only 3 washing up sinks and 3 showers for women, so again I think it would be pretty hectic if it was busy. On the whole, I would definitely stay here again outside of the school holidays.

  318. Stayed here recently

Last minute decision to stay here so glad we did. The site was perfect we felt like we where there in our own but with the luxury of showers, toilets and electric sockets. Enjoyed a lovely bike ride in the countryside stopping of at the local pub. Would highly recommend staying here.

  319. Great campsite to get away from it all

We had a great stay in a Sanctuary pitch. Very secluded with excellent facilities. Barney was very welcoming and helpful and the shop had a good range of products. Great shower and toilet block which was very clean.

  320. Excellent camping experience

We were impressed by the large pitch sizes and that each pitch had its own fire pit. The shower/toilet block is up to date and well looked after. The only down side is that children use the toilets unsupervised. This is a criticism of parents not the camp site. Shop is well stocked for basics and you can buy fire wood and hire BBQ tripods. There is a fridge and freezer for essential items. Wifi was available but we only used it to check on the weather. There is an ‘adult only’ area comprising 5 pitches in a wooded area. May try this if we go in school holidays again. Although it seems to be in the middle of nowhere, it only takes a few minutes to get to Thirsk or Ripon. This campsite is excellent value for money.

  321. I can still smell the campfires

Lovely quiet site next to a stream, with all pitches having fire pits. Children played happily all day with others they met, we relaxed, the showers were better than most hotels I’ve stayed in, and I can still close my eyes and smell the aroma of everyone cooking over a fire in the early evening sun. We loved it!

  322. Great weekend get away

Fabulous little g weekend with family and friends. The kids played in the stream constantly and made lots of new friends. Our only comment would be that they sorely missed a field/space to play cricket/ball games on. That would have made the stay perfect! Nonetheless, plenty of hide and seek and other games were easily played. As a consequence the adults had a fabulous and relaxing time!! Lovely clean site- wonderful washing facilities – pick and mix sweets, shop, hot chocolates etc all made for a very luxurious camping stay. Thank you!

  323. Fab half term at at The Hideaway

We found the campsite by googling Campsite near York as we wanted to visit the area with our son. This was top of the result list and we can see why. Everyone was friendly, our hobbit hole was well equipped and our son enjoyed making new friends with the children around us, all of whom had been here before. We are already planning our next trip and we’ll be braving a tent next time! We particularly enjoyed the fire pit and I loved having proper toilet and shower facilities. The little shop was great to have to pick up the things we forgot. We also liked having the coffee van there although get there early if you want any of the pastries as they sell out very quickly!

  324. Perfect

A complete get away from it all – with some luxuries thrown in. Stayed in a hobbit house and loved it. Showers/toilets warm, clean and very modern. Very friendly staff. Fire pits on every pitch and a lovely atmosphere too. Not sure how it could be any better.

  325. Great Stay

Great, would recommend. Only downside was the difficulty of putting the rubbish in the bins. They are set up to post the rubbish through smallish slots which makes disposing of a bin bag full of waste quite difficult.

    • Hi Gemma. Thanks for your review.
We tell EVERYONE about the bins on arrival and that you need to use small bags. This helps to cut down on people simply throwing EVERYTHING into one large bag and it ending up in the landfill bin.
I can only assume that this important point was not passed on to you by the person who came to Reception on arrival?

  326. Short break

Lovely campsite. Well set out in small sheltered areas. Great place for quiet break to explore surrounding area. We stayed with small camper van ,pitches a good size with space between and electric hook up.

  327. Hideaway camping june 18

Pleasant enough camping park. Over rated in my opinion though. Literally nothing for kids to do whatsoever. More suited to older couples looking for peace and quiet reading a book and doing very little else. Found the request to wear overshoes in the toilet areas and cloths next to every sink a little odd. Especially with the reason being to simply make the cleaning quicker and easier for the staff. What next lawnmowers next to the pitches for you to cut the grass before you leave? I thought thats what I was paying for? Fair enough during wet conditions but not necessary when we stayed. Better parks to visit in my opinion particularly if you have kids.

    • Thank you for your feedback John.
It is a good idea to check the website before booking as it is quite clear on there that there is no Butlins-style entertainment here, we are not that sort of site.
The polite request to remove outdoor shoes etc is to keep the facilities clean for YOU, not us!
There is a lot of “natural play” for kids to do such as bug hunts, playing by or in the stream, or simply inventing their own games. We encourage parents to find these things to do with their kids rather than just dump them in an artificial play park! That is the point of The Hideaway; it’s all part of getting away from it all and discovering the world around you.

  328. Great stay at the hideaway!!

Lovely site! Beautiful location and we’re lucky to have good weather over the bank holiday (after putting up the tent in the rain!) Facilities are clean and brilliant site – will definitely stay here again!

  329. campsite review

Quiet tranquil location, generous pitch sizes. Internet worked OK near the site office. Appreciated and understood the “green” efforts to improve sustainability. The speed bumps on the approach road were needlessly abrupt and even driving over at snails pace made everything shake about and things fall out, which was annoying. Also, as ever is the case, grassy pitches tend to leave cut grass everywhere which gets on footwear which gets into the vehicle and is irritating, it would be better to have a surfaced area for each pitch and connected to the facilities by a surfaced path. That isn’t very unecological surely.

  330. Quiet family friendly site – lovely facilities

Loved the individual fire pits to each tent. Great atmosphere bbqs and toasting marshmallows at night. Lots of space between tents. No cars next to tents kept it quiet and added to the real camping feel. Nice and quiet, lovely clean facilities. Great drying room and fridge and freezer provided. Loved the retro caravan serving coffee and pastries etc for breakfast. Well stocked shop and friendly staff. Thank you!

  331. Another great stay.

We have stayed at the Hideaway several times, sleeping in bell tents, the Pods and this time the hobbit houses. The shower/bathroom facilities are always great and are a big part of why we return. It just makes it so easy. The drying room, the little kitchen sinks and fridge, all just make it easy to just roll up an relax! It’s amazingly peaceful and the no noise after 11pm that everyone respects means you know you won’t b kept awake with noisy neighbours. Hobbit houses were lovely, a bit more space so if the weather isn’t great you have a bit more room inside. Log burner was lovely and you have to fire it up what ever the weather!! As always Barney and the staff are great. Only downside this time was the clouds at night meant we didn’t have the view of the stars that look amazing on a clear night! Great location for exploring York and loads to do locally. Look forward to coming back!

  332. A little bit of heaven

Baxby is one of the best campsites we’ve used. Pitches are so generous and the fire pits are a great touch. The bathrooms are spotless and washing up area brilliant with hot water and eco liquid provided. Simply beautiful site and will definitely return!

  333. The best site we’ve ever stayed at!

We’ve been to The Hideaway a few times, since it first opened, and have introduced a whole bunch of friends to it, including several first-time campers who have gone on to love life under canvas thanks to this fabulous site. It’s always lovely to go back. Barney always gives a warm welcome, the facilities are second to none, and the site itself is delightful. Being able to have a campfire and a tripod barbecue to cook on is a real bonus, and the eco ethics (even down to providing environmentally friendly, vegan, cruelty-free washing up liquid and hand soap) mean you can relax, knowing you’re having a ‘minimal impact’ holiday. We can’t wait to go back again!

  334. One of the best campsites experienced

Beautiful peaceful organised well thought through campsite. Amazing value too. Would return for a peaceful getaway. Location is rural but there’s plenty of great villages and towns yo explore within driving distance. A great example of how to run a campsite and encourage respectfulness to fellow campers.

  335. An Idyllic Nook in North Yorkshire

Perfect – the washing facilities would rival the ones in most peoples homes. The drying room did the trick for damp towels and also cut down on clothing potentially hanging off guy ropes. A good amount of space for each tent site ensured that you never felt crowded and The Sanctuary was just that – we spotted two barn owls flying forth for their dinner.

  336. Hello,
Just emailing to say thank you for a lovely weekend. We were a party of 6 (two tents and one van) from 18th-20th May. Me and my boyfriend have been twice before and wanted to bring my parents and my sister for some birthday celebrations. Such a lovely atmosphere; clean, tranquil but still enough freedom to have some fun. We liked the Baxby Fest and it was perfect for us.
We think you are doing a great job and we will be back soon, either as individuals or as a family.
Will be trying out the Hobbit houses next.
    Regards, Grace

  337. My boyfriend and I stayed in one of the eco pods this weekend just gone. We had a fantastic time from the warm greeting we received from Barney to meeting new friends. The facilities are great and very well kept. The retro caravan is fab and great for the next morning when you fancy a proper coffee with fresh baked pastries 🙂 The Saturday evening was very entertaining listening to people sing and play on their guitars whilst we all sat by open camp fires. Children laughing and playing and toasting their marshmallows with the guidance of parents/carers. It really was a lovely evening. I can highly recommend baxby manor Wether you want to camp in a tent through to stopping in one of the eco pods or hobbit houses. Next time I hope to persuade my boyfriend to take my tent and camp out properly lol

  338. We spent one night at The Hideaway this weekend, in a tent with our 2 daughters. The site is beautiful, peaceful and calm. Children could play in safety, the pitches are a good size and surrounded by nice areas of grass and some trees. The potwash area, toilets/showers and shop are of a high standard. They’re kept very clean, and the underfloor heating in the toilets is much appreciated on a 4am bathroom call!!
Barney and all the staff are lovely and friendly. Everything about the site was explained on check in, they work hard to make this site the little gem that it is. We were lucky enough to be there on their ‘Baxbyfest’ night, which was a lovely gathering of people with instruments having a good singalong, families all sitting around the camp fires joining in. The kids loved it as much as we did.
We will definitely return to this lovely site, hopefully on a regular basis!!

  339. The best things in life are free !!!!

Just one of the most gorgeous places to stay Baxby Manor, staff so friendly and hospitality outstanding, accomadation amazing, facilities excellent, access excellent, well done to Barney who is always just a phone call away nothing is a problem thank you so much ??

  340. Excelent stay

Exemplary ammenity block large pitches and quiet contry location. Open log fires make the evening very relaxing. Friendly and helpful staff.

  341. The most relaxing weekend

As it was bank holiday, and a hot one as well, we knew it’d be busy on the campsite. We’ve had less than positive experiences on busy sites before but this was totally different. What a wonderful place. Everything so well thought out. We stayed in the sanctuary and, as a couple, it was lovely to have the peace and quiet which came with that. Would definitely recommend and hope to visit again. Thank you!

  342. Thank you for a lovely weekend!

Thank you for a lovely weekend! You have a beautifully thought-out and well kept campsite. Excellent washing and other facilities. As promised by your rules, it was a very chilled out and quiet weekend – perfect for our small family with young children, as there was absolutely no noise at night. The children loved splashing in the shallow pools in the river alongside the campsite. We loved sitting around our own personal fire pit!

  343. May Day Holiday

As always the staff on site were friendly and very helpful. The site was kept as clean as possible but no matter what other users may let you down. There was a problem one night with only 1 toilet working out of 5 but that was down to children not being supervised when using the facilities and putting too much toilet paper in the toilet so they could not then flush. Not sure what you can do about this as you state all over children must be supervised. The shop is stocked perfectly and has everything you need should you forget something. This was our 3rd time here and we will be back. Thank you

  344. First visit, will definitely return again soon!

We have been looking for an excuse to stay at the Hideaway but as we usually pack up the VW Camper and head off at short notice, we have never managed to get in due to its popularity. On our first visit, it is easy to see why! A beautiful secluded spot, generous pitches with fire-pits, a well stocked shop with fair prices and very professionally run by Barney who’s general outlook just adds to the relaxed atmosphere of the site. We’ll definitely be back in 2018!

  345. Fantastic bank holiday stay

Stayed again at the Hideaway with family and friends. As always, a fantastic visit. The site is excellent, Barney the owner very helpful, and I couldn’t fault anything the site does or provides.

  346. Perfect pods!

This was our second stay at The Hideaway, this time staying in one of their ecopods. The pod was perfect for us for a weekend stay, with a comfortable double bed, generous decking, ample space and of course it’s own firepit. Barney and his small team keep the site clean and tidy and nothing is too much trouble. We didn’t want to leave!

  347. The Hideaway

We had a lovely stay at The Hideaway. It is such a relaxing place to visit. Barney was very friendly and helpful, facilities were excellent and the campfires were superb! We could not fault anything and will definitely be returning.

  348. Perfect retreat!

Great facilities, extremely clean washrooms with nice touches like fresh flowers. We stayed in the adult sanctuary and it was a beautiful spot next to the beck. It’s thoughtfully planned out to give privacy and lovely to have a campfire. Lovely walk straight from the campsite. A perfect break away.

  349. A lovely, quiet, well kept site

Which is why we keep coming back! It is in beautiful rural surroundings but not ridiculously far to travel to a great variety of attractions if wanted. The surrounding villages are beautiful and lovely walks direct from campsite so no need to go anywhere else! The fire pit is always a plus and lived by the adults as much as the children ! Showers warm, pitches spaced well apart, well stocked shop, nice pub in village, breakfast van and a real effort made regarding eco issues & conservation on the site – what more could you want from a campsite ????

  350. First visit

Perfect! Large pitch sizes, open campfires, chilled vibe, clean facilities (and not clinical) with fridge/ freezer (very handy) and fresh croissants/coffee on a morning, could have stayed for longer, will be back again

  351. Unimpressed

We stayed here on the bank holiday weekend in a hobbit house and was really disappointed by the fact that we in very close proximity to the other houses. Our house directly faced the neighbour giving us no privacy, peace or shield from their extremely smokey fire (something we weren’t expecting with a name including ‘hideaway’). Also, the double bed is in a very inconvenient place being so low down (no good for anyone suffering from back pain or bad knees) with a bunk over the top (both my partner and I hit our head and back numerous times).

    • Hi David, I’m sorry you couldn’t make out from the map that the five Hobbit Houses we have are all in the same area and next to each other however I don’t have any hobbit Houses that directly face each other…?!
The Hobbit House layout is supposed to be “hobbity” so the low beds and bunks are all part of the experience. The double beds are movable too so can be pulled out from under the bunk above.
Someone with a bad back or knees probably wouldn’t choose to book a “Hobbit House”, or indeed go camping/glamping.

The Hobbit Houses are new for 2018 and we do have a landscaping programme in place for over the winter so this should make a difference when it comes to having your own private space. In an ideal world we would have liked to have had the planting in place before opening but we all remember what a wet and snowy start to “Spring” it was so this unfortunately had a knock-on effect and we were unable to plant anything. Hopefully you will return over the next year or two and see the planting we have planned.

  352. Tour de Yorkshire Week end

Nice place, well maintaned, good facililties, good staff, but!!!!!!! every pitch has a fire pit which sounds like a good idea but when we came back to the camp after a day out it was like looking over a battle field just afer the cannons have gone off, more smoke than fresh air, this really lets the place down and is the only reason we will not be returning. I go camping to get away from the city life, polution, smoke, car fumes etc

    • Thanks for the feedback Michael. All I can say is; 99% of people come here because they can have a proper campfire. Plus out here in the sticks where we don’t have mains gas we rely on wood for heating and hot water! 🙂
Joking apart though; the weather was cracking over the Bank Holiday weekend and because there was very little or no wind due to the high pressure over the country the log smoke hung in the air and didn’t go anywhere fast.
I think most would take campfire smoke over city smog and noise any day!

  353. Great campsite

Lovely campsite, best wash rooms I’ve ever used. Shower could do with lasting a little longer. Really peaceful, loved having the fire pit and good value for money. Will definitely return

  354. Our stay

Really enjoyed our stay here. Would have given all points 5 stars but felt a little let down on our last day. It was raining and it took us longer to pack away. Once we were packed away we went to use the showers as we were wet to be told that the check out was at 11, and as it was after 11 we couldn’t use the shower. The cleaner told us as she had just cleaned them we were unable to use them. Even though if the other people on the site would have needed to use them they could. As she hadn’t cleaned the male showers she allowed me to use them which was fine as there was not many people on the campsite, but if it was busy may become an issue. This wouldn’t put us off going again, but a little bit of leniency in this aspect would have been much better as don’t know why there was an issue with me needing to use the shower ??

    • Hi Beckie,

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.

I have looked into the matter and believe it was Pam you spoke with and who was cleaning as mentioned in your feedback.
As Pam explained at the time she has only just started working at The Hideaway and was unaware of the options for people wanting to use the facilities after 11am so when you came to use the facilities at just after 12pm she explained that she was half way through cleaning them but would check with management what the options were however as i was not there you told Pam you were happy using the Gents which had not been cleaned yet.
As everyone else had left the site (bar the one tent that was staying) Pam wanted to make sure the facilities were clean for any new arrivals and was unaware of the leniency surrounding people who were late checking out, thus the reason for her uncertainty.

Anyway lessons learnt all round so thank you again Beckie and I look forward to seeing you at The Hideaway again soon 🙂
      Barney (owner)

  355. Highly recommended

Stayed for 2 nights and had a great time relaxing beside the campfire. Lovely and accommodating staff. Excellent facilities and overall impressed with cleanliness and tidiness of the place. Being dog friendly was a huge bonus for ourselves. Would love to see more sites run by the company in the future.

  356. Great campfires

Beautiful natural campsite , very relaxing, particularly enjoyed the campfire as this facility is relatively unique amongst commercial sites.

  357. Spring Weekend Break Great Site

Don’t go expecting pristine manicured pitches. The beauty in this site is that it fits in perfectly with it’s natural surroundings. Quiet, calm, peaceful. Lovely at night when the fire pits are lit. Pristine shower block Absolutely gorgeous. Can’t wait to revisit.

  358. Great back-to-nature campsite!

The Hideaway is a total escape and just how camping should be. It is so well thought out and well cared for by it’s owners. The fire pits on every pitch are the icing on the cake. We will be back!

  359. Family trip to check out hobbit house

Great family place to stay been camping and tried hobbit house would fully recommend a stay. Staff friendly and helpful perfect stay

  360. Our favourite campsite

We have stayed here twice now and absolutely love it. Great size of pitches, each with fire pit. You can hire a brazier to cook on. Well-stocked shop. Very clean facilities. Only minor niggles are that you have to press the shower back on every five seconds- I’m all for conserving water, but that’s extreme! Also that there is no washing machine. There is a drying room where you can hand wash though. We will definitely be back for a third visit.

  361. Fantastic stay

Fabulous location, fantastic facilities and very friendly and helpful staff. Had a brilliant weekend and the kids were in their element. Would definitely recommend and have already booked again for summer! ??

  362. Family weekend

We came for a weekend with our one year old. We were made very welcome by staff who advised us that our chosen pitch may be slightly wet, but directed us to a drier pitch. There was lots of space for our little one to toddler around and we loved having our own fire pit, and the use of a cooking tripod. The toilets were spotlessly clean and lovely and warm and the drying room was a handy bonus. We will definitely return.

  363. Campervan

A lovely clean site, family friendly, clean facilities and staff we super helpful (even pulled us out when the camper got stuck). Would highly recommend.

  364. Family of 3

Lovely relaxed campsite, great location perfectly sized as not too busy but a lovely welcoming friendly atmosphere. There isn’t an awful lots for children regarding activities but I feel that is the beauty of it. Children are then encouraged to make conversation, play amongst nature’s playground and walk in the local area. The local walk offered for 10p from the little shop is great! Lovely relaxing time had by all. Thanks The Hideaway!

  365. Fire pit camping

A real campsite for real campers ! Barney provides an idyllic camping experience for the true camper. FIRE PIT camping is the heart of a night under canvas. Quiet chat under the stars in front of a fire with nearest and dearest family is the reason I load the car and plan the trip like clockwork to make it a success. Crowd and noise control is also another feather in this sites cap. Plastic shoe covers offered to enter the bathrooms in wet weather…worth every penny ! We will definitely return when we come back to walk the ALPACAS at BEACON FARM again. Excellent Sunday roast at the CARLTON INN on Easter Sunday. Thanks to Barney and team at THE HIDEAWAY for a great weekend at Easter.

  366. A wet Easter weekend

All thought the weather got the better of us. We still looked forward and enjoyed our weekend at The Hideway. A immaculate kept site with great facilities and helpful friendly staff. A added bonus was Liza Jane a vintage caravan where we could get fresh coffee and pastries. Highly recommend and we will be returning.Just need to book the weather.

  367. Easter break

It’s the earliest camping trip we’ve had in a year, so we were expecting it to be cold. The camp fire kept us lovely and warm, toilets and shower room were very clean and warm. We enjoyed a very nice meal at the Plum and Partridge pub round the corner and even treated ourselves to a coffee and sausage roll from the lady that has the camper in the morning. Great start to a year of camping, will definitely return!

  368. Great campsite!

Lovely few days at the Hideaway – shame about the rain and quite muddy on electric pitches due to previous trailer tents but facilities still spotless and very warm. Thanks to Barney for helping us out with a stove when we forgot ours and for his guide to local pubs! Kids had great fun exploring and getting muddy and loved the camp fire. Will definitely return when not so wet.

  369. Fantastic place for a real Hideaway

I was looking for a place close to home that allowed fires but still had a little comfort for the not so true camper partner of mine. We stayed in FP1 (Fairy Palace1 as my little girl called it) and it was lovely, small and cute as she put it. The toilet facilities wouldnt be out of place in a top end hotel, amazing and really clean. The little things too like providing Eco Friendly washing liquid really add to the place. Friendly staff and also a great location for heading out to the North York Moors. Will def be returning

  370. October Camping Trip

Both me and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baxby Manor! Barney (the owner of the site) was really friendly and helpful! We managed to see Ripon, York and other little villiages nearby. Lovely little campsite and lovely and quiet. Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here.

  371. Blown away by The Hideaway

Extremely good toilet/wash facilities. Beautiful setting. Quaint ecopod. Well kept grounds. Nice fire pit. Friendly accomodating staff. Perfect.

  372. Excellent glamping

Fantastic stay in the Belle tents with family, lovely to have the fire pit to cook on and roasting marshmallows into the evening. Best campsite facilities I have seen. Very helpful and accommodating staff, overall a fantastic place to stay

This was a lovely, well designed site. The facilities were fabulous and having a firepit on each pitch is a great idea. There’s a little shop on site, which stocks most things you’re likely to forget or run out of. There are a few villages with pubs serving food within easy walking distance and it’s within easy reach of York. The only complaint we had was with the booking system. We were bought a gift voucher for Christmas, but when we came to book our break there was no option on the booking system to redeem a gift voucher. When we queried this, we were told that we would have to pay for the pitch again and then be refunded when we arrived. We don’t think this is acceptable. If someone gives you a gift you shouldn’t have to buy it again for yourself before you can use it!

    • Thank you for the feedback and positive comments.
As you are aware The Hideaway is not a large company, we do not have the means (or the money!) of providing a website akin to those such as John Lewis or Tesco where vouchers can be redeemed immediately so i am sorry that you found the whole Gift Voucher process to be unacceptable and caused you an inconvenience. At present this is the only way we, a small family business, can process Gift Vouchers.

  374. Great trip even in the mud

We stayed at the weekend for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed every second dispite the weather being poor and it was extremely muddy we had a great time and the children 3 and 6 loved it. The facilities are the best I’ve ever had at a camp site and little extras like wheelbarrows to help carry things from the car to the pitch. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

  375. Great place to visit North Yorkshire from

My partner and I plus the dog had a great 3 night stay in the Sanctuary in late September, although the site was quite we found the facilities very good and each pitch has its own fire pit made the evenings very enjoyable. The site was quite wet but that is just the time of year and even getting caught in the rain the drying facility’s were superb. We visited many of the local villages and towns, no shortage of good coffee and cake in Thirsk, Helmesley, Ampleforth and Easingwold and all lovely places to visit. Its just over the Flyingdale moor and into Whitby for fantastic fish and chips and a great beach walk. All in all a great site, great location and we will be back.

  376. The Sanctuary T30

Fantastic pitch, well thought out transport by way of wheeled trolley. Whole site was well thought out and immaculate. Absolutely full campsite but our pitch felt very private and peaceful. Very muddy but no fault of owners, price you pay for a woodland pitch in the rain. Would definitely return.

  377. Fantastic hidden beauty !!

What a great stay at the hideaway, perfectly designed and ran to cater for all tastes, this is a wonderful site and one that allows you to relax have fun and be as involved or not with people …. great cycling opportunities in the local areas and walks too. Barney is a really nice guy and nothing was too much trouble. I recommend this anyone who loves camping, walking, fires and fun !!!

  378. Good site for older kids

The site itself was nice, however we had a couple of issues. Firstly the website said there was kitchen facilities but when we turned up there was a sink and a fridge. I had expected a kettle at least, if not a microwave. If I had known in advance it would have been fine but I don’t think you can advertise a kitchen without providing a kettle. It caused issues with our baby’s milk anyway. Secondly we were allocated a pitch upon booking (V2) which was basically the worst pitch on the site. It was at the junction of 2 roads so had people traipsing up and down all night to the bathrooms and kids going up and down on their bikes making loads of noise. It wasn’t noisy after the curfew of 10pm but it was beforehand. Our little guy goes down at 7pm so an out of the way pitch would have been better. We should have asked to move but had pitched our tent by the time we were having the issues. I think that that pitch shouldn’t be used unless the site is full. We could see plenty of much better pitches out of the way of the road we could have been allocated. The other thing was that a lot of the pitches were very muddy which wasn’t great with a crawler. Overall I think it would have been fine with older kids but it wasn’t great for a baby. The toilet block was good though and the picnic area would have been great in good weather. Plus the play area up the road was good for older kids but not much for babies to play on.

    • Thank you for your feedback.

You were under the impression that there were “kitchen facilities” at The Hideaway; what gave you the impression there was a kitchen please? I mention on my website that there is a pot-wash and a food preparation area but do not mention a kitchen at all, have you seen The Hideaway listed as having a kitchen with microwave etc on another website? If so and you can remember which site i would be grateful if you could let me know which site it was so i can inform them of the correct description of the facilities. I have not had any other guests expect there to be a fully equipped kitchen on site.

You also mention being allocated a pitch; all pitches are chosen by you the camper when you book online via the website we do not allocate pitches at all so sorry you did not like the pitch you chose, V2 i believe? Hopefully you will stay with us again in the future and next time choose a pitch more to your liking. If anyone wishes to move pitches we are more than happy to accommodate this providing there are other pitches available but you didn’t ask.
When camping in the UK in what is effectively a field on a farm mud is a factor that always has to be taken into account, all campers know this, you are not staying in a hotel! Plus I cannot control the weather! 2012 was a LOT worse believe me! This summer has been a particularly wet and muddy and as proprietor of a campsite it has been very testing, as is most years at some point, it called the Great British Weather! If you don’t like mud then perhaps camping in the UK isn’t for you??!

Thanks again for your feedback Jo.

  379. Lovely hideaway

The camp facilities are spotless and well kept. Next time as I camp alone I’d probably be better in the adult only section as the campers next to me weren’t quiet at 6am but this was rectified by the manager quickly

  380. Great site miserable weather

Good first impression as you drive in and a warm welcome from Barney. The pitch was flat and spacious with its own firepit. Facilities were clean, well maintained and a higher standard than many. My only gripe was that the shower push button lasted about two seconds, so it was difficult to wash my hair and keep the water flowing. The weather was wet and areas of the site became quite muddy but the requirement to remove or cover shoes helped keep the facilities clean. I could do without the many (many, many) lists of dos and don’ts round the site – wherever there’s a bit of wall there’s a laminated poster to remind you to clean up / keep quiet etc. It felt a bit primary school. Overall a good experience and I would return…might check the weather before booking though!

    • Two seconds for the shower is a bit of an exaggeration isn’t it!! Ive tested them all and none are less than five seconds. Its eco-friendly, thats the point 🙂
The “do’s and don’ts” around the site are necessary to keep The Hideaway as it is, (You say yourself; “Facilities were clean, well maintained and a higher standard than many”). To the majority the notices state the obvious but it only takes a few to spoil it for everyone else, the notices do help to “educate” the few! I think you’d be horrified at the state of the facilities if i took some/all the notices down!

  381. Nice weekend away

Lovely (if slightly soggy) weekend away in a superior bell tent. Brilliantly equipped but a little tired looking, possibly because it was getting to end of season? Beds rock hard, wish we’d taken our air beds! Wash facilities absolutely fab, lovely and warm and always clean. Gorgeous breakfast caravan for pastries and coffees, mmmm 🙂 fire pits great.

  382. Still a wonderful site

This was our second visit to the Hideaway, and we still love it, it’s so peaceful and we’ll run, some complain about their being too many rules, but these are just common courtesy standards to allow everyone to have a peaceful holiday

  383. So peaceful

This campsite is perfect for those needing a break from busy noisy hussle and bustle of every day life. Site is perfect for a total break, enjoy sitting round campfire looking at the stars and listening to the wildlife.

  384. Very happy

Couldn’t reccomend the hindeaway any higher. Very clean and well kept facilities, brilliant location and very friendly and knowledgable staff. Very glad I stumbled across your page and I will most definitely be returning.

  385. Lovely campsite for families

We stayed at the Hideaway as a family and overall the facilities were brilliant – safe, clean and a good range of things on offer both at the site and surrounding area. We loved having a BBQ on the fire pit and the toilet/shower facilities were very good.

  386. Immaculate camp site

The wife and I found this site to be of an incredibly high standard, on site there are bell tents and eco pods as well as the standard tent pitches. The facilities block was of a high standard and included a drying room (very useful) as well as the usual showers, shop etc. This provided my wife’s only niggle which was that the showers required a fair amount of skill to use without being alternately frozen, then boiled like a lobster, then frozen again. The site provides a high quality service which you must respect while there so I would suggest it’s better for mature and experienced campers rather than noisy teens

  387. Enjoyable stay

Really enjoyed staying here for our first family holiday with two very small children. The bell tent was beautiful and I loved that it faced a little river and a field. The facilities were good and the dry room in particular was useful.

What a lovely campsite the cleanest toilets and showers I have ever seen staff really friendly and helpful .I like the idea of choosing your own pitch and the fact every pitch gets its own firepit. Ideal spot to explore Sutton bank, Helmsley etc. would definitely go back.

  389. Wonderful place

We visit every year for a peaceful camping adventure where we can relax in comfort. We live nearby but love this site for its relaxed atmosphere. Kids love playing about in the grass and the fire pits are glorious in the evening. Just lovely

  390. What it says on the tin.

Peaceful and out of the way, exactly what it says on the tin. Highly recommend unless you want to stay up till 2am drinking and shouting, also if you like lying in your tent being gently lulled to sleep by the heavy traffic on the other side of the hedge or groups of loud obnoxious types then don’t come here. Facilities are clean, warm and generally spider free. There’s indoor washing up, a fridge and freezer and some charging points for the phones we can’t possibly do without. I will certainly be coming again and will be recommending it to my friends.

  391. A good site overall chosen for its handy location near to a foraging course my husband and I were attending in Pilmore. Only niggle was our pitch in the sanctuary was very bare with very little grass. Thanks

    • Sorry Jane, thats the price to pay when surrounded by trees and on secluded pitches.
Have thinned out the trees a little to see if that helps next year but don’t want to overdo it!

  392. Wonderful campsite

Exactly what we were looking for, a fab mix of informal camping fields and first rate amenities. Clean, friendly, safe and dog friendly with footpaths through fields metres away from our tent!

  393. Great weekend

This is the 3rd time we have been to The Hideaway, camping and a hut. We love it here. The pithes are big enough so you don’t feel you are on top of your camping neighbours. The firepit for each pitch is great allowing the real camping expetience of cooking on an open fire. The no noise policy after 11 is great allowing everyone a good night’s sleep. The facilities are great and the shop stocks the essentials if you need the. Friendly staff and enough to do around and about to keep the whole family occupied. The weekend morning cafe caravan is great if you want a posh coffee or a something yummy as a treat. Highly recommend the Hideaway if you are after a quiet, friendly site.

  394. Lovely peaceful campsite.

We had a fantastic weekend at the hideaway. The pitch was lovely and large with hedges on each side making it feel more private. The firepit was a lovely touch and firewood at 10 pounds for 2 nights seemed reasonable. The coffee van on Saturday and Sunday was just the icing on the cake. Beautiful location and a fab campsite, we will be back!

  395. Well run campsite – mostly

Lovely site, well run and idyllic setting. My only gripe was on the last night there was a big group of people that had totally ignored the ‘no noise after 11′ rule. It got to 1130pm and I had to go and speak to them myself, at which point I was questioned about my own parenting skills because their noise was keeping my child awake. Not exactly Baxby Manors’ fault I know, but the next day there was another bunch of people turning up to join their party which goes against what the ethos of this place seems to be and didn’t see anything that was being done to stop it. The party goers were also utterly unaware of the ‘no noise after 11’ rule so I’d suggest this being stressed a bit more – particularly when large groups turn up like as happened here.

    • Hi, thank you for your feedback although i wish you had told me about the noisy group when you were here then I could have had a quiet word with them! If people don’t tell us until after they have left we can’t do anything about it at the time.
As you have posted your review anonymously i am unable to see when you stayed and work out who the group may have been.
If you could let me know ( via which area or pitches they were on, or what dates you stayed, i can hopefully determine who they were and make a note on the system should they attempt to make any large group bookings in the future.

You will have gathered from the website we have a maximum of three pitches in a group but we are/were unaware of any large group bookings recently. I make the ELEVEN7 no noise policy VERY clear on the website so there is no excuse for people to be noisy past 11pm. I am sorry this put a dampener on your stay at The Hideaway but hope you will visit again soon.

  396. Lovely campsite!

Absolutely loved our weeks stay at The Hideaway. Such a relaxed site with so much to do nearby. Lovely walk to the nearby Carlton Husthwaite down the track, worth a walk back on the road to stop at the honesty cafe on the road back. Great to be able to have a campfire at each pit and well worth hiring the tripod to cook over the fire too. We’ve already booked a further week next year!

  397. Baxby experience

It was a lovely hidden patch of nature! I loved being able to make my own bonfire and the little caravan of heaven makes amazing pizzas, coffees and pastries!! I would have liked a little more for the kids to do like a park or competition something like that but apart from that it was a lovely trip away!!

  398. Only 1 thing

The only thing I’d say that could have improved our stay is if there could be a field for families with older children although the young children near us were well behaved it’s not always the case. But totally perfect place to come thank you.

  399. Definitely a hide-away!

Great campsite. Chilled out because of sensible rules (and not selfish ‘suit yourself’ culture). Really appreciated 11-7 quietness, a car pack for cars, and respect for our environment- recycling investment and campfire provision. Wash and loo facilities A1! Good little shop and breakfast caravan. Well priced, well run and yes a little off the beaten track and a real ‘get away from it all’

  400. A little gem of a site

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, getting close to nature, spacious pitches and real campfires, look no further. There’s plenty of space for kids to explore and, although there are no facilities specifically for them, ours have never been bored. Barney, the owner, is a really friendly guy and keeps the place in tip-top condition.

  401. odd shoe thing

I thought the site was great and the facilities very good – exceptional in fact. The only thing I found weird is the shoes in plastic bags thing. The only place I think you should be putting your feet in plastic bags is Buckingham Palace or my mum’s house on a bad day. You definitely shouldn’t need to do it when camping! I know this is a small thing but it’s a really odd thing to ask campers to do. It’s also something I’ve literally never been asked to do at any other campsite. anyway, besides that – great job! Hopefully we’ll be back!

    • Hi Paul, thanks for the review.
The shoe covers thing is a “learnt from past experience” thing & really just makes the whole Hideaway experience more enjoyable for you and your fellow campers, no one wants to be showering and walking barefoot on muddy floors! This is why the facilities are exceptionally clean and why we pride ourselves on this. At the end of the day we are 100+ people in a field on a farm and i know you would have been horrified at how muddy the shower rooms became if we didn’t suggest wearing some Crocs or similar indoor footwear (or the shoe covers).
We don’t insist on people wearing them we just hope people can see why we suggest it and then appreciate the cleanliness later 🙂

  402. A Campers Paradise

We’ve been camping now for 14yrs and this site is definitely the best we have been too. Facilities are great, clean and modern. Drying room was great for wet clothes and the site shop had some cracking local beers and ciders to try by the camp fire. We honestly can’t fault this site and the location is great for visiting all the attractions North Yorkshire offer.

  403. Great campsite

We stumbled upon this little gem by trawling through online searches for somewhere to camp , so glad we did. Booking online is simple and you even get to choose where you pitch. The site is well kept with great facilities. The availability of the fire pit to have campfire and also hire tripod to cook on it is worth coming back for alone! The van selling hot drinks and pastries of a morning is a great idea. In fact the only thing I think that could’ve improved our stay was if the van also did bacon butties! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Hideaway.

  404. Fantastic site

This was my kids first camping trip so we wanted somewhere that allowed open fires so they could toast marshmallows on an evening and sit round the fire chatting. The site was very family friendly, safe with all cars parked away from tents and very quiet with an 11 pm noise curfew. Perfect for their first introduction to camping.

  405. It was lovely, was expecting a tad more

We stayed as a family of 5 with 3 small children in a tent (non-electric). It was a lovely, organised and clean campsite. When we first arrived the lady in the shop looked like she was ready for home, I gave her a big smile and didn’t get one in return. I asked where we needed to park our car and she gave me a whole verbal list of where to park and where everything was and what time things closed and opened, I couldn’t remember everything she said. The parking spot was a bit too tight for my liking but manageable. The spot to pitch our tent was a nice size, the firepit add on is ah-mazing, love it! The toilets and shower facilities are clean and great, only things I would change is there are no windows or something in place to get rid of smells. You have to keep pressing the shower button which is a bit of a pain and the hairdryer there is way too weak. It would be good to either have a proper hairdryer that actually blows strong air or a place to plug in a hairdryer. The washing-up facilities, fridge and freezers etc was great also. The coffee from the caravan was really nice. The bin facilities were good, I think we recycled a lot more than we would’ve done because of the way it was set up. I would go again but only as a couple. There was a park just over the road but besides that there wasn’t really anything for the kids to do and we were hoping to do some walks but there weren’t any and the one around the campsite was too overgrown so couldn’t do that. I saw glimpses of Barney and he looks a very friendly chappy. Overall the campsite is really good.

  406. Best camping place we have ever been to!

A lot of thoughts and efforts have been laboured to this place – definitely a campsite with a soul! The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor is a clean, tidy campsite with many thoughtful facilities such as the controlled-temperature drying room, access to fridge/freezer, access to charging points and many others. It is also in a good spot for people who wants to explore York!

  407. Great visit again

This is our 2nd visit to the Hideaway and once again we have had a great time, the pitches are big, the fire pits excellent for chatting around and catching up and the children enjoyed exploring the surrounding areas and its location for a good walk.

  408. The best campsite we have been to for years

We stayed at The Hideaway in our tent with two young boys in August. The pitches were a great size with lots of room for the boys to playmand although you cannot drive and park on the camping field we were right next to where our car was parked. The fire pit was a huge success and we had a great camp fire, it was lovely to see all the other campers doing the same. We bought logs from the shop for Ģ6. We visited the local pub where there was a fun day going on with a bbq and bouncy castle. We received a lovely welcome there and would definitely return. The local playground was a hit with the boys too. All in all we had a great stay!

  409. Amazing peaceful place

Love how peaceful the camp site it just wished there was more activities in the day, we also didn’t manage to catch pizza night as we wasn’t there on a Friday. But would definitely return the cleanliness of the camp is amazing and the staff are fab!

  410. August Bank Holiday weekend at The Hideaway.

We visited The Hideaway for a long (5 day) weekend over August Bank Holiday as a group of friends and family. We all absolutely loved our time there, not just because the sun blazed for the entire time! The pitches are large and the fire pits are fantastic, just so cosy to cuddle up round and admire the stars in the evening. The children (age 12-7) spent their time exploring the forest and surrounding areas and came back full of tales of the things they had seen. There is a brilliant playground a short walk off site and the food at the Plum and Partridge was superb. The 11pm noise ban is strictly adhered to which was much appreciated by all. The toilets and showers are lovely and plentiful so there was minimal queuing (though we did try and go at off peak times). We’d gone prepared with food but had a slight malfunction (the pizzas are lovely but don’t rely on them to completely fill a hungry family!) so we’d cooked the next day’s meal too and bought supplies at the site shop for the next day. We could get pasta but a jar of the quick chuck it in pasta sauce would have been very handy too! Otherwise the shop is well stocked with the essentials. We loved our time there and have unanimously voted to return next summer.

  411. Perfect camping

For the last 2 August bank holidays, our group of friends have gone to baxby. It’s such a lovely setting, the pitches are a very generous size, with the added bonus of the fire pits, they’re brilliant! The facilities are great, tho I could shout at a few people for leaving their mucky shoes on in the toilets!! Great toilets and showers, the drying room is a good addition. There has been so much thought put in to the layout, with each area feeling quite secluded and private. Selling the local cider is a good idea, it would be a fab idea to extend the shop a little. The visiting local butcher means you get delicious meat delivered to the door, delicious coffees and fresh pastries in the morning, and the addition of the pizza night…well that was yummy (despite the queues tho I believe there will be some more investment in this area) you have thought of everything, I love the fact that it’s all local businesses supporting each other. The only shame is that the newly opened pub/restaurant is not really appropriate for campers, we would all prefer something more rustic! Love the place, Barney and his kids are so welcoming and friendly. We love it so much, we arrived home and booked in for next year again!!! Continued success to you, it really is a credit to you

  412. Fabulous fire pits

We had another wonderful stay at the Hideaway. Barney was really helpful in suggesting where to pitch our tents as there had been a lot of rain. As usual, facilities were very clean and well-maintained. We absolutely love the site! The site was really quiet in the evening; it was lovely sitting round the firepit, enjoying the amazing stars.

  413. Lovely wedding

My wife and I got married at the Hideaway; we had an a wonderful time and if we could we would do it all here again; already planning on coming back next year for our anniversary!

  414. First impressions.

The most clean and modern bathrooms I have been to whilst camping, they were very up to standard! Lovely and peaceful area, was nice to see birds flying so close and hear the owls at night. Overall, great place to go camping and will definitely come again

  415. our kind of place

We have only been camping 5 times and have been here for 4 of them. We love the big pitches and fire pits. There is no laid on entertainment which we love and plenty of space for children to make their own. We also love the fact that its camping without caravans and cars are not allowed on pitches Toilet block and pot wash are good and kept well with plenty of hot water although it only takes one person to leave a muddy floor.

  416. Brilliant place !!!!

Brilliant place, we love it here and will be booking again for next year. The staff are amazing, really helpful and the coffee caravan is amazing!! Facilities are always clean and tidy, pure luxury. Couldn’t recommend enough

  417. The hideaway@baxby manor

Great little camp site with pitches big enough for our 8 man tent plus porch. Nice little shop and a caravan on site serving breakfast and also pizzas on a Friday night. Shower block and toilets were immaculate as was pot washing area. There was also a beck running through the site that the kids could play in. Only downside was there was no play area on site but there is one at the top of a hill off site.

  418. PLace to play for kids

We stayed at the Bell Tents and enjoyed the stays, however it would have been great if there were more spaces between the tents for kids to play around. There was limited open space where we stayed outside the bell tent location as it was busy and there were lots of private tents around. The children’s play area was really good and we spent a lot of time there. I completely enjoyed the time with the family. Keep improving 🙂

  419. Yet another fantastic break

Have stayed at the Hideaway many times. Cannot fault it in any way. Perfect little site to relax and enjoy good company. This break was to spend time with an old school friend- there’s no better way to have a catch-up than enjoying a drink and a laugh by the camp fire!

  420. Can’t recommend highly enough

Beautiful site with 5star facilities, lovely staff and lots to do. We will definitely be back xx loved the hooting of the owls and the awesome views of the stars too xx

  421. Facilities

It would have been nice to have a few children’s facilities there such as a playground and other things fir the children to do. There was a lovely playground about 5 minutes walk away though.

  422. Hideaway

We had a lovely warm 4 nights in August in our tent. The firepits were good for fires and cooking. Take plenty of your own logs as we sourced some cheaper in Ripon. As it was warm, there were loads of flies in the shower blocks and kitchen – not sure what could be done about it. Laundry/dry room was fab and like a steam room and were ideal for wet towels and clothes. Indoor Potwash room was fab too! Very tidy site and my boys enjoyed it. We’ll be back in the future. Tents were safe when we went out for the day too! Only a pub in the local village (with Plum the ginger cat) sat on the seating outside. No shops in the village.

  423. Excellent campsite

Perfect place to stay. Very clean and modern facilities. The ability to have campfires is what camping is all about. The only downside is there isn’t nothing to do on the evenings especially for the children

  424. Super stay at the hideaway

The children & I had a great 3 night stay at the hideaway – the bel tent was perfectly equipped & positioned. The site has clearly been well planned and managed. The wash facilities were the best I’ve seen at campsites and their eco philosophy is to be greatly admired. The surrounding area is beaituful & we enjoyed our visit to York which was only a 30 minute drive away. Would definitely recommend.

  425. Excellent!

The Hideaway was perfect! Peace & quiet, spotlessly clean and the staff couldn’t be more friendly or helpful if they tried. We’re already planning our next stay!

  426. Excellent camp site

The first time out for over 20 yrs and the experience was fantastic. We will definitely be going back. We chose the campsite because it is designed to be a relaxing nature place (has noise restrictions etc) and it develivered.

  427. Holiday Highlights

All the camp facilities were superb – our first experience of cooking on a fire pit was a success and the Bell Tents were so well equipped it was certainly a little home from home. Thank you to Barney and Katie for looking after us so well. From talking to fellow campers it was clear that many of them return year after year which speaks volumes. Lisa Janes was also a little extra that was a welcome sight on a drizzly morning. In particular I loved the environmental ethos of the site. It’s good to know that we can still tread lightly, even on holiday!

  428. One night stay

Very friendly and small campsite with good rules regarding noise, pets and large groups that everyone seemed to adhere to. Facilities are clean and modern with a well stocked shop. Enjoyed the little caravan serving pastries and quality coffee on a morning. Nice to see everyone using the firepits to cook thier evening meals. Wished there were onsite activities for kids or safer areas to explore. I am not an experienced camper and thought this was the perfect introduction to the idea.

  429. The nettley path of doooooom

We will be back! The only thing i would like is a little more maintainance of the path down to thw adult only pitches. I got stung a fair bit walking to and form T30. Nothing else. Beautiful location, splendid isolation and a cracking pitch.

  430. very peaceful

This campsite is by far the quietest and most peaceful we have ever been on, staff and other campers were very friendly. If you like nature this is for you.Plenty of space per pitch and each with it’s own fire pit which made the evenings. My only quibble was the shower space, the floor space to dry off and dress was wet with the shower but we got round that by bunking into a sink cubicle!!!! No more wet pyjama bottoms!! Definitely going back again and again!! Loved it!

  431. Good facilities, nice site

A peaceful location and good quality facilities. The campfires are a lovely touch and help create a nice ambeiance and friendly atmosphere.

  432. Great adult-only section in lovely, small campsite

The campsite is a nice, relatively small size. We stayed in the adult bit which was fantastic – the pitches felt very private and weren’t too far from everything else. Amenities good and cleaned regularly. Fire pit excellent, well worth getting a tripod. Rest of campsite looked great – tents a good spacing apart.

  433. Great Campsite

Can’t fault the site at all. Plenty to see and do in surrounding areas. The shower and toilet areas were the best I’ve come across at any campsite.

  434. Great stay at The Hideaway

Our second time did not disappoint – facilities are great and in keeping with the beautiful surroundings. Such a shame that people abuse the bin area requiring the lids to be locked- just can’t understand that mentality. Lots of balsam by the stream – why not do a balsam bash weekend on a reduced rate?! Greatly appreciated the chance to overstay the checkout time so we had a dry tent to pack up – thanks for the flexibility and friendliness!

  435. Fantastic stay

Kids Loved staying near the stream on pitch 24 and 25. Really well spaced out pitches and lovely treat to have croissants and coffee for breakfast, great tripods to cook barbq food on – much prefer this to charcoal, went to easingwold maze-loads cheaper than York maze – simple but kids loved it and went to Sutton bank – lovely stay, we will be back! Considered going to local pub but food and reviews didn’t look to cater for campers which was a shame.

  436. Space, nature and good facilities

We had a wonderful stay at the Hideaway. As a family, we are still relatively new to camping, but this was undoubtedly the best campsite we have stayed at to date. It has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and we very much felt close to nature. There is a fantastic amount of space between each pitch and the fire pits were enjoyed by everyone. The facilities were clear and well maintained. It is a very good base for days out and without question, we would return to the Hideaway.

  437. Wonderful site

Came for a relaxing break and got everything we could have wanted. Very relaxing, excellent toilet and shower facilities and a really nice touch having the option of a real camp fire. Will definitely be back.

  438. My favourite site by far!

We came as a family of 4 with 2 young children. My husband was worried about the lack of children’s facilities but he needn’t have worried as it was perfect! Kids don’t need any more than some open space and they can have a whale of a time! The toilets and showers were lovely and clean and beautifully modern – the best I’ve come across while camping. Actual hot showers was a treat!! The shop is well equipped and we felt prices were very reasonable. The pitch itself was spacious and we loved that although the campsite was fully booked it was anything but cramped! The strict noise rules are mostly respected and if not, a quick text to Barney (the chief!) and he’ll soon deal with it. The washing facilities are great – washing up liquid and scouters are provided, and there is a fridge and freezers if you want to store perishables. Lots of phone charging points if you can’t do without! And a really handy drying room should you need it. We didn’t use it, but the catering can was really pretty and a lovely touch too. It fit into the surroundings beautifully. My boys loved the little touches such as the ‘shhhh don’t want the troll’ sign at the bridge, making sure we were silent as we passed. This is my favourite campsite yet, and we’ll definitely be back!

  439. Fantastic campsite!!!

Absolutely brilliant campsite, just what we wanted. Spacious, clean, beautiful surroundings, friendly staff and superb lattes in the morning! Definitely recommend to others, in fact, already have done! WE WILL BE BACK!!!!!

  440. Really well organised and relaxed campsite without caravans or camper vans.

Staff were great and very helpful. Made every effort to encourage people to keep communal spaces clean but some people ignored instructions. Swing barbecues great to hire. Campfire on every pitch excellent. Adult only area very private and the pitches further away from main campsite were the quietest and darkest. Good recommendations of local pubs and walks.

  441. fantastic weekend

had a fantastic weekend in the Bell Tent, the site was lovely and clear with a shop to buy logs and a butcher who came in the morning to sell meat. There was a caravan where you could get coffees and pastries. Definitely would come back again.

  442. Brilliant time!

Pros – Fire Pit, pitch TE2 – excellent, really liked how secluded it felt and really good size. Shower block. Cons – Not enough bags of logs on Saturday night so we ran out very early on, disappointing as this was a big attraction for us. Showers need a shelf and and on off button rather than pressing every 5 seconds. Pub in the village, we went on Saturday lunchtime – walked in and walked out, no-one in, no atmosphere and very overpriced, a lunch menu might attract more custom.

  443. Couples retreat rather than family site

Lovely quiet campsite, good pitches, loved being able to have a campfire. Not too great for children as no playground on site (village one requires adult attendance as too far away) and no wide open space to play games e.g football due to intentionally uncut grass. Just glad we brought the kids bikes as something to do. Rest of time stayed by camp. Depends what you are looking for in a camp. Lovely campsite but could do with more facilities for children

    • Thanks for your feedback Fiona. We like to keep things simple and encourage children (and adults!) to create their own fun and games and keep their and your imagination running wild too! Good old fashioned fun! 🙂
We have no intention of having a children’s play area I am afraid as we do not have the space but mainly for the reasons given above.

  444. Excellent!

Such a lovely site, well maintained and organised. Very generous and comfortable distance between pitches. Amazing toilet block and facilities. What a treat each and every pitch having it’s own fire pit, just perfect for toasting marshmallows. Can see why people suggest children play areas, however I understand why you don’t have any. This would encourage noise and chaos, the hideaway provides a good opportunity for creative, imaginative play. We avoided the local pub as not camper friendly and very expensive. The Fauconberg Arms at Coxwold was perfect. A great weekend had by all. Thank you Barney and Katie.

  445. Another great stay

Baxby is an excellent place to stay whether you’re camping or glamping. The site is the best I’ve seen in terms of little extras that have been thought about by the helpful ‘cheif’ Barney including the on-site shop. cloths in the bathrooms to keep it tidy, a fridge so that you’re milk and bacon stay cold for the morning and best of all is that every pitch/pod gets their own campfire. Can’t recommend it highly enough!!

  446. Hideaway campground review

The visit was not as appreciated as our first due to the level of care taken by the more numerous campers this time not looking after the wash facilities as well. Because it was busier it also became apparent that the car parking spaces available were not large enough to load and unload vehicles from the side doors, which was a problem for us as we are not tall people who can load/unload our roof box without standing on the ledge of the car door after it is fully open!

  447. First trip to the hideaway

We saw this campsite on ukcampsites website. Upon arrival there is dedicated parking while you checkin. The staff were friendly and helpfull when describing where park, the facilities and any rules. The first full day it rained constantly ( not the owners fault 🙂 ) Despite this the toilet/shower block was always clean. This is helped by most campers using the provided blue boot covers to stop mud being walked into the toilet/shower area. Everyone seems to leave cardboard at reception which can be used to get your fire started as every pitch has a fire pit which is a very nice touch (one of the reasons we booked this site as we like a campfire). We will definetly be going back next year.

  448. The perfect ‘ hideaway ‘

The perfect ‘ hideaway ‘ to escape to. Lovely site in a beautiful location. The pitch & the on site facilities 10 out of 10. Friendly & helpful staff. No complaints whatsoever !!!

  449. First visit

We were heading home from Cornwall to Edinburgh and chose to stay at Baxby to break up the journey and take in York. It wasn’t the easiest to locate but the instructions given before hand help make it clear. The pitch was fine, we would have preferred a hook up but none were available at this busy time. The pitch was large and had its own fire pit which was amazing to sit round at night. The toilets etc were of a very high standard and a real highlight. The caravan for breakfast pastries, tea/coffee was perfect and a cool touch!

  450. Hideaway with a camp fire

Had a great time here with kids and friends once the weather improved. If it rains it’s a bit of a washout as the site relies heavily on entertaining yourself in the great outdoors; nature, stream, camp fires which is what attracted us to it but equally it’s best point can be it’s downfall when it rains! Super relaxed environment super safe feeling about the place and kids enjoyed the freedom of roaming about. Campfires at night make the best memories. Kids cried when leaving but I knew rain was coming so was glad to get away!

  451. Clean and peaceful site.

Perfect if looking for peace and quiet. We stayed in the adults only part. Facilities are good, would have preferred more than one hairdryer as had to wait for turn, but this would not stop me from returning. Good sized pitches and thoughtfully provided wheelbarrow to take bags from car to pitch, which is great. Landscaped well to help enjoy nature.

  452. Lovely peaceful hideaway!

Had a wonderful stay at the hideaway – 2 nights following a 3 night stay near robin hoods bay. Campsite was attractive, excellent facilities – great showers and wash facilities (although shower button timer could do with being extended!) – firepits are an EXCELLENT bonus! Had lovely fire bbq’s and toasted marshmallows! Very tranquil – can see the stars really well and quite sheltered so not windy. Little coffee caravan was welcome in the morning! Delicious latte and pain au chocolat! Drying room and wash up room were great! If you stay and like animals definitely go to beacon alpacas just down the road for a guided alpaca walk! Was a fantastic activity! Cant think of any negatives! Great helpful service and had a great time!

  453. Fabulous Campsite

The Hideaway is amazing. Beautiful location, excellent modern clean facilities, great camp fire on each pitch that you can cook on. This was our 3rd visit and we’ll definitely be back. Love this site – highly recommend.

  454. Great camp site

The camp site is lovely. The fire pits are a good. The shower and toilets are new & clean. You can arrange for BBQ food to be delivered to the site and there is a pastry & coffee caravan which is great. The shop is also equipped with all you need. We had a fantastic weekend.

  455. Glamping for beginners

Spent a fantastic 2 nights in a superior bell tent with 2 children aged 8 and 3. The girls loved the tent and their special “camping beds”. All the basics needed for a memorable stay we’re provided and we loved cooking our sausages over the fire pit. The campsite was quiet and made a relaxing base from which to explore the surrounding area. Would definitely recommend.

  456. Family friendly and awesome!

We specifically chose this site for a couple of reasons, the campfire in each pitch and the no noise after 11 rule. We had pitch 22 and it was lovely. The pitches are really good sized and the campfire set up is brilliant. You can hire a cooking tripod for £5 for the length of your stay and a £20 refundable deposit so could introduce the children to proper campfire cooking (the toasted marshmallows and smores were a bonus!) The wash facilities are the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve stayed on a lot of campsites. The rule of no shoes/blue overshoe protectors meant they were kept pretty clean (there were some people who refused to pay attention to that which is bound to happen and not the fault of the site) What I really loved is how large the fields were that had the pitches on that could have easily held so many more pitches but the site owner has decided to keep a large middle section for wild flowers and grass so the fields weren’t packed with tents and it didn’t feel like we were packed in like cattle like some places we’ve visited. We had some issues with the no noise after 11 and the personal music (headphones only) rule but the staff make rounds to make sure these are being enforced. These problems were from people who have been multiple times and seem to think that because they were returning customers they could get away with it. This was not the case and were also made to comply so as not to ruin the experience for the other campers. The site is pet friendly, had a good little on site shop, fabulous recycling facilities (make sure you take carrier bags for rubbish, the bins won’t take bin liner size bags!) and a great caravan conversion coffee shop in the mornings. I can honestly say this is the best campsite I’ve been to, the location is great for the park and ride into York and it’s proximity to many other family orientated places to visit. I would not hesitate to recommend this site to friends and family (although I’d like to keep it as my little secret!) and will most definitely be returning. Thank you Barney and team for a wonderful 8 night stay, it was a pleasure to stay on your site.

  457. A brilliant weekend at The Hideaway

We went here with my family and my friend’s family and we couldn’t be more impressed. The facilities are second to none and the eco credentials really impressed us. There isn’t a children’s play-park on site, but that didn’t stop ours from having a brilliant time playing nearby in the copse (there is a park a little walk outside the campsite). We visited Helmsley open-air swimming pool on Saturday (it was a bit nippy) and then went in to Helmsley for lunch afterwards. We had beautiful weather the whole time we were there, and we loved the fire rings. You can hire a grill for the fire rings for cooking which we didn’t do but we would definitely do this next time. Liza-Jane’s Vintage Kitchen served up brilliant coffees and even my vegan friend was super impressed by the dairy-alternative mocha. There was a butcher on-site on the Saturday morning which allowed us to get BBQ provisions and because the campsite provides fridges we were able to keep everything fresh. There is a 7-11 rule about noise which was enforced and the site just had a really lovely, family feel. We will definitely return

  458. Fantastic

A small campsite with outstanding facilities and in a fantastic location. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The place was clean and warm and great showers. Quiet by 11 so brilliant if u have children. Would definitely recommend and will visit again .

  459. Second stay and won’t be our last!

we’ve visited Barney and his family twice now and what can we say!, his little ‘Hideaway’ is just that!, its the sort of camp you make your own fun and games, the field is bog enough for rounders and cricket with ALL other campers joining us for a game everyday!, showers, toilets etc are second to none, spotless, small but well stocked shop, fire pits at every tent point with the option to hire a tripod for cooking,, all really good ides from Barney, i hate to tell people to go and visit as its our little secret of paradise but GO!!, its a must!, theres no bingo and no noisey discos so if thats your bag don’t bother!, the 11-7am noise restrictions are a brilliant way to keep the likes of us going back year upon year, we love you Barney!!,, TE3,4,and 5 are out favourite spots as the big filed is on your doors step, The Jacksons xx

  460. Love The Hideaway

We’ve stayed here twice (once in a tent and once in an eco pod) and cannot rate this place highly enough. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. The washing and hygiene facilities are excellent. Love the addition of a breakfast camper – the mocha was delicious and very welcome! There isn’t a play area for the kids but that is kind of what makes it more peaceful and our kids didn’t need one because we enjoyed a lovely countryside walk and then dinner by the campfire. Can’t wait to go again!

  461. nice place – bit pricey for adult and child

Lovely place and good situation for north yorks NP. Great that parking was off site. No cars on grass etc. All good facilities and good to have no shoes/blue overshoes for bathrooms. Also fire pits helped with safety re open fires. Price was a bit high for single parent – one adult /one child – on the website there was no option for this and I wondered if 2 adults was cheaper? £50 for 2 nights seems a lot esp when no hookup.

  462. A Perfect Hideaway

We love The Hideaway & have stayed 4 times now. The pitches are a good size & each have their own fire pit (which are great to sit around on an evening toasting marshmallows). The eco friendly facilities are modern & well maintained & Barney is very passionate about recycling. The shop is well stocked for your camping needs & the addition of the caravan serving fresh coffee & pastries each morning is delightful. The local butcher makes deliveries on certain days (the steak was amazing). Our children love having the freedom to play outside all day & the village park & tennis courts are only a short walk away. Each time we return Barney has made small improvements such as the eco washing up liquid provided in the pot wash room. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

  463. First time glampers…

Stayed in a Bell Tent, great facilities, especially fire pits and communal block. Fabulous location. One thing that may add would be a specific outdoor play area for children to meet each other and play together – this could be done in a tasteful way in keeping with the ethos of the campsite / surroundings (think wooden open ended play equipment / resources as opposed to brightly coloured plastic / metal park)

  464. The Sanctuary

Had a lovely 4 night stay at Baxby. Second time on site but first time in the adults only section. We found pros and cons to this section. It was very peaceful, even managed a lie in and also managed to have a campfire on the first night when the rain never let due to over hanging trees. Downside it doesnt get much sun light so the ground did become rather muddy due to all the rain (this section has just opened so suppose bit of trial and error). Overall the facilities are clean and tidy and the staff very helpful. Little shop on site which sells all the necessities. Its a relaxed site and we love the open fire pits (keep you very warm at night).

  465. Recommend Baxby Manor without hesitation

Beautiful campsite in lovely surroundings. Lovely friendly, helpful staff. If I have to find a negative point it would be that the breakfast van didn’t do their gorgeous savoury pastries on weekdays.

  466. Away from it all

Relaxing and quiet. No riff raff or clubhouse entertainment. Back to the good old days, cooking out on a real camp fire and making simplified camping really work. Happy days.

  467. Lovely campsite to enjoy with family and friends

Just spent the weekend at the Hideaway. Lovely campsite. Pitches are generously sized and all of them are lovely and flat! Every pitch has a fire pit which is great. Plenty of woods and a stream for kids to play in. Would have been nice to have a climbing frame too. Even a drying room on site which is very handy. Facilities nice and clean. Nice pub within walking distance. Rather a lot of rules! We’ll definitely be back in the future.

  468. Only the weather could have made it better…

We spent 4 nights here, a nice small to medium sized campsite, good sized pitches, real fires allowed and excellent toilet /shower facilities. Friendly staff and handy for all of the wonders of Yorkshire. My only niggle, shop prices – we don’t mind a reasonable mark up but Ģ8.50 for a Ģ4.99 bottle of wine is doing the sales figures no favours!

  469. Wonderful site

We’ve just spent a week there and we all agreed that it’s one of the best sites we’ve stayed on. The facilities are great and I love the fact that the site was mainly tents. The highlight for me was the fire pit on each pitch. It was lovely to look around at night to see the fires burning. I did worry that not being able to park near the tent would be an issue, but the reality was the opposite. I loved the car free site, much more pleasant during the week and packing up actually was smoother than normal as we had to think about it…. The only downside was the shop opening hours, 9.15am opening and 6pm closing, which we missed most days a we were off exploring the area before 9 and often not back until after 6. However saying that we still manage to buy logs and the delicious local cider. A wonderful site and one we will definitely return to.

  470. Hideaway review

Have visited The Hideaway before so knew how good the facilities were. Impressed that access road had been upgraded. As usual facilities were well maintained and clean. Rubbish and recycling area had been redesigned to encourage people to think about what they were throwing away, unfortunately this just encourages thoughtless people to leave large bags of rubbish next to the bins. Majority of people at campsite respect the facilities, however spoilt by few that refuse to swap, cover shoes before entering washroom area.

  471. Great place to stay

Big site but subdivided into sections so it doesn’t feel huge. Nestled into wildlife – love the fact David Bellamy has input into nature sites. Just a lovely campsite.

  472. Our Stay at the Hideaway July 2017

The Hiseaway is a beautiful campsite – there are allocated pitches and parking spaces (no cars on the grass) which everyone has space. The facilities are very good – a single toilet block which is kept clean with push button showers with proper hot water and the toilet block itself is nice and warm. The only issue with the toilet block is the taps – children may will have issues using them as they are push down button ones that are quite stiff. They have a vintage caravan onsite selling hot drinks and breakfast items at weekends and weekdays during school holidays. Each pitch has a fire pit and you can hire a BBQ tripod to use and purchase logs to burn. There’s a shop onsite offering campsite essentials and a few little luxury extras. The surrounding area has loads to do – its right on the edge of the North York Moors so plenty to do for everyone. All in all a great site and one we will definitely go back to!

  473. Camp fires and meadows

We first went to the Hideaway five years ago just after it opened and loved the open nature of the pitches ( all tents /pods are around the edge of fields, so you are not hemmed in ) the lovely washrooms, and the campfire which comes with each pitch. After five years nothing had changed, apart from it getting more popular, and the grass in the middle of each field had been allowed to grow with wildflowers etc, with cut paths criss-crossing. Still lovely – would go again.

  474. Lovely camp site, however…

Family of four stayed for a week. Well kept site with decent facilities, camp fires a great touch. Bathrooms fine but taps very hard to push on, especially tricky for youngsters, and 9 second burst of water in showers (yes I counted) a bit short. A washing machine would have been helpful too. Great area, lots to do, but wouldn’t stay at site again as it was quite pricey for a camping pitch (over £200 for a week) not sure we found the ‘soul’. Didn’t really see the owners much, we stopped to say goodbye when we were leaving, otherwise we could have disappeared without notice.

  475. WOW

What a fantastic find this campsite was. We were looking for a campsite close to York and I am so glad we chose to come to Baxby Manor, everything about it was fantastic. From our beautiful pitch close to the river with a firepit to sit in front of a roaring fire everynight watching the owls swooping about the sky, to the immaculate toilets and showers which were the nicest, cleanest facilities we have every had camping and so well looked after with hot water at all times of the day and night. Fridge and freezer facilities to use and a drying room which we luckily did not need to use as the weather was on our side. The staff were equally helpful and friendly. Have been recommending to all our family and friends and we will be definitely be back.

  476. Relaxing stay at the hideaway

We enjoyed our 5 nights at the hideaway. The site is great and really well laid out. The showers and toilets were really modern, clean and loads of hot water. My kids loved the shop. It had a great variety of items. There’s some much to do in the local area. Most evenings we walked to the local park – it’s brilliant and there’s even an adult exercise area. The nearby Carlton Inn is amazing. I had a delicious steak pie followed by apple crumble.

  477. Shhh don’t tell it’s fabulous!

Amazing, a wonderful natural spot with superb facilities for us as a family it was perfect and our bell tent was a great treat. We will be back with our own tent, by far the best campsite we have ever stayed at

  478. Open and clean

Lovely open site with plenty of space for tents, shades etc, do take own shade as if sunny trees are not big enough to protect. Did not try local pub but were happy with all facilities and availabilty of staff. Very clean etc

  479. Best campsite we have ever visited.

Great campsite. Clean, small and well run. Excellent facilities always clean. Spacious plots with fire pits. Quiet rural location perfect for relaxing. Very quiet at night

  480. Lovely campsite

We stayed in one of the large Bell Tents and had a fabulous time. The camp site was lovely and the facilities clean. There is a great Eco ethos to the site. The children had lots of fun playing in the stream. We definitely plan to return.

  481. Peaceful quiet beautiful

Absolutely loved it at The Hideaway spacious pitches all with individual fire pit. One of the reasons I chose this site was that it had wheelchair accessible shadower/wc. This was one of the best ones I have stayed at, plenty of room to manoeuvre my wheelchair, rails in all the right places shower was on a slider rail and not a push button and a drop down seat even the mirror was in the correct position plus spotlessly clean. Had a walk down and looked at the adult only section if I was able to manage without ehu I would be really tempted it was like a secret garden each pitch in its own area which seemed lovely and secluded pull along wagons were provided for campers to transfer equipment from car park also wheelbarrows for anyone to use as parking is not by tents each pitch has it marked parking bay. Really peaceful at night as the no noise after 11pm and before 7am only sounds we heard were owls and other animals, definitely need a torch for going outside at night. As we were only there for two nights didn’t go anywhere on the full day we were there just enjoyed the peace and warm weather. There is a small flying club very near but sound of planes did not bother us and my husband enjoyed seeing them. Will definitely visit again even sat nav found it with no problem even though the web site does give how to get there directions so as not t
