  1. Great campsite!

Lovely few days at the Hideaway – shame about the rain and quite muddy on electric pitches due to previous trailer tents but facilities still spotless and very warm. Thanks to Barney for helping us out with a stove when we forgot ours and for his guide to local pubs! Kids had great fun exploring and getting muddy and loved the camp fire. Will definitely return when not so wet.

  2. Fantastic place for a real Hideaway

I was looking for a place close to home that allowed fires but still had a little comfort for the not so true camper partner of mine. We stayed in FP1 (Fairy Palace1 as my little girl called it) and it was lovely, small and cute as she put it. The toilet facilities wouldnt be out of place in a top end hotel, amazing and really clean. The little things too like providing Eco Friendly washing liquid really add to the place. Friendly staff and also a great location for heading out to the North York Moors. Will def be returning

  3. October Camping Trip

Both me and my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Baxby Manor! Barney (the owner of the site) was really friendly and helpful! We managed to see Ripon, York and other little villiages nearby. Lovely little campsite and lovely and quiet. Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here.

  4. Blown away by The Hideaway

Extremely good toilet/wash facilities. Beautiful setting. Quaint ecopod. Well kept grounds. Nice fire pit. Friendly accomodating staff. Perfect.

  5. Excellent glamping

Fantastic stay in the Belle tents with family, lovely to have the fire pit to cook on and roasting marshmallows into the evening. Best campsite facilities I have seen. Very helpful and accommodating staff, overall a fantastic place to stay

  6. THE HIDEAWAY

This was a lovely, well designed site. The facilities were fabulous and having a firepit on each pitch is a great idea. There’s a little shop on site, which stocks most things you’re likely to forget or run out of. There are a few villages with pubs serving food within easy walking distance and it’s within easy reach of York. The only complaint we had was with the booking system. We were bought a gift voucher for Christmas, but when we came to book our break there was no option on the booking system to redeem a gift voucher. When we queried this, we were told that we would have to pay for the pitch again and then be refunded when we arrived. We don’t think this is acceptable. If someone gives you a gift you shouldn’t have to buy it again for yourself before you can use it!

    • Thank you for the feedback and positive comments.
As you are aware The Hideaway is not a large company, we do not have the means (or the money!) of providing a website akin to those such as John Lewis or Tesco where vouchers can be redeemed immediately so i am sorry that you found the whole Gift Voucher process to be unacceptable and caused you an inconvenience. At present this is the only way we, a small family business, can process Gift Vouchers.

  7. Great trip even in the mud

We stayed at the weekend for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed every second dispite the weather being poor and it was extremely muddy we had a great time and the children 3 and 6 loved it. The facilities are the best I’ve ever had at a camp site and little extras like wheelbarrows to help carry things from the car to the pitch. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

  8. Great place to visit North Yorkshire from

My partner and I plus the dog had a great 3 night stay in the Sanctuary in late September, although the site was quite we found the facilities very good and each pitch has its own fire pit made the evenings very enjoyable. The site was quite wet but that is just the time of year and even getting caught in the rain the drying facility’s were superb. We visited many of the local villages and towns, no shortage of good coffee and cake in Thirsk, Helmesley, Ampleforth and Easingwold and all lovely places to visit. Its just over the Flyingdale moor and into Whitby for fantastic fish and chips and a great beach walk. All in all a great site, great location and we will be back.

  9. The Sanctuary T30

Fantastic pitch, well thought out transport by way of wheeled trolley. Whole site was well thought out and immaculate. Absolutely full campsite but our pitch felt very private and peaceful. Very muddy but no fault of owners, price you pay for a woodland pitch in the rain. Would definitely return.

  10. Fantastic hidden beauty !!

What a great stay at the hideaway, perfectly designed and ran to cater for all tastes, this is a wonderful site and one that allows you to relax have fun and be as involved or not with people …. great cycling opportunities in the local areas and walks too. Barney is a really nice guy and nothing was too much trouble. I recommend this anyone who loves camping, walking, fires and fun !!!

  11. Good site for older kids

The site itself was nice, however we had a couple of issues. Firstly the website said there was kitchen facilities but when we turned up there was a sink and a fridge. I had expected a kettle at least, if not a microwave. If I had known in advance it would have been fine but I don’t think you can advertise a kitchen without providing a kettle. It caused issues with our baby’s milk anyway. Secondly we were allocated a pitch upon booking (V2) which was basically the worst pitch on the site. It was at the junction of 2 roads so had people traipsing up and down all night to the bathrooms and kids going up and down on their bikes making loads of noise. It wasn’t noisy after the curfew of 10pm but it was beforehand. Our little guy goes down at 7pm so an out of the way pitch would have been better. We should have asked to move but had pitched our tent by the time we were having the issues. I think that that pitch shouldn’t be used unless the site is full. We could see plenty of much better pitches out of the way of the road we could have been allocated. The other thing was that a lot of the pitches were very muddy which wasn’t great with a crawler. Overall I think it would have been fine with older kids but it wasn’t great for a baby. The toilet block was good though and the picnic area would have been great in good weather. Plus the play area up the road was good for older kids but not much for babies to play on.

    • Thank you for your feedback.

You were under the impression that there were “kitchen facilities” at The Hideaway; what gave you the impression there was a kitchen please? I mention on my website that there is a pot-wash and a food preparation area but do not mention a kitchen at all, have you seen The Hideaway listed as having a kitchen with microwave etc on another website? If so and you can remember which site i would be grateful if you could let me know which site it was so i can inform them of the correct description of the facilities. I have not had any other guests expect there to be a fully equipped kitchen on site.

You also mention being allocated a pitch; all pitches are chosen by you the camper when you book online via the website we do not allocate pitches at all so sorry you did not like the pitch you chose, V2 i believe? Hopefully you will stay with us again in the future and next time choose a pitch more to your liking. If anyone wishes to move pitches we are more than happy to accommodate this providing there are other pitches available but you didn’t ask.
When camping in the UK in what is effectively a field on a farm mud is a factor that always has to be taken into account, all campers know this, you are not staying in a hotel! Plus I cannot control the weather! 2012 was a LOT worse believe me! This summer has been a particularly wet and muddy and as proprietor of a campsite it has been very testing, as is most years at some point, it called the Great British Weather! If you don’t like mud then perhaps camping in the UK isn’t for you??!

Thanks again for your feedback Jo.

  12. Lovely hideaway

The camp facilities are spotless and well kept. Next time as I camp alone I’d probably be better in the adult only section as the campers next to me weren’t quiet at 6am but this was rectified by the manager quickly

  13. Great site miserable weather

Good first impression as you drive in and a warm welcome from Barney. The pitch was flat and spacious with its own firepit. Facilities were clean, well maintained and a higher standard than many. My only gripe was that the shower push button lasted about two seconds, so it was difficult to wash my hair and keep the water flowing. The weather was wet and areas of the site became quite muddy but the requirement to remove or cover shoes helped keep the facilities clean. I could do without the many (many, many) lists of dos and don’ts round the site – wherever there’s a bit of wall there’s a laminated poster to remind you to clean up / keep quiet etc. It felt a bit primary school. Overall a good experience and I would return…might check the weather before booking though!

    • Two seconds for the shower is a bit of an exaggeration isn’t it!! Ive tested them all and none are less than five seconds. Its eco-friendly, thats the point 🙂
The “do’s and don’ts” around the site are necessary to keep The Hideaway as it is, (You say yourself; “Facilities were clean, well maintained and a higher standard than many”). To the majority the notices state the obvious but it only takes a few to spoil it for everyone else, the notices do help to “educate” the few! I think you’d be horrified at the state of the facilities if i took some/all the notices down!

  14. Nice weekend away

Lovely (if slightly soggy) weekend away in a superior bell tent. Brilliantly equipped but a little tired looking, possibly because it was getting to end of season? Beds rock hard, wish we’d taken our air beds! Wash facilities absolutely fab, lovely and warm and always clean. Gorgeous breakfast caravan for pastries and coffees, mmmm 🙂 fire pits great.

  15. Still a wonderful site

This was our second visit to the Hideaway, and we still love it, it’s so peaceful and we’ll run, some complain about their being too many rules, but these are just common courtesy standards to allow everyone to have a peaceful holiday

  16. So peaceful

This campsite is perfect for those needing a break from busy noisy hussle and bustle of every day life. Site is perfect for a total break, enjoy sitting round campfire looking at the stars and listening to the wildlife.

  17. Very happy

Couldn’t reccomend the hindeaway any higher. Very clean and well kept facilities, brilliant location and very friendly and knowledgable staff. Very glad I stumbled across your page and I will most definitely be returning.

  18. Lovely campsite for families

We stayed at the Hideaway as a family and overall the facilities were brilliant – safe, clean and a good range of things on offer both at the site and surrounding area. We loved having a BBQ on the fire pit and the toilet/shower facilities were very good.

  19. Immaculate camp site

The wife and I found this site to be of an incredibly high standard, on site there are bell tents and eco pods as well as the standard tent pitches. The facilities block was of a high standard and included a drying room (very useful) as well as the usual showers, shop etc. This provided my wife’s only niggle which was that the showers required a fair amount of skill to use without being alternately frozen, then boiled like a lobster, then frozen again. The site provides a high quality service which you must respect while there so I would suggest it’s better for mature and experienced campers rather than noisy teens

  20. Enjoyable stay

Really enjoyed staying here for our first family holiday with two very small children. The bell tent was beautiful and I loved that it faced a little river and a field. The facilities were good and the dry room in particular was useful.

  21. LOVELY CAMPSITE

What a lovely campsite the cleanest toilets and showers I have ever seen staff really friendly and helpful .I like the idea of choosing your own pitch and the fact every pitch gets its own firepit. Ideal spot to explore Sutton bank, Helmsley etc. would definitely go back.

  22. Wonderful place

We visit every year for a peaceful camping adventure where we can relax in comfort. We live nearby but love this site for its relaxed atmosphere. Kids love playing about in the grass and the fire pits are glorious in the evening. Just lovely

  23. What it says on the tin.

Peaceful and out of the way, exactly what it says on the tin. Highly recommend unless you want to stay up till 2am drinking and shouting, also if you like lying in your tent being gently lulled to sleep by the heavy traffic on the other side of the hedge or groups of loud obnoxious types then don’t come here. Facilities are clean, warm and generally spider free. There’s indoor washing up, a fridge and freezer and some charging points for the phones we can’t possibly do without. I will certainly be coming again and will be recommending it to my friends.

  24. A good site overall chosen for its handy location near to a foraging course my husband and I were attending in Pilmore. Only niggle was our pitch in the sanctuary was very bare with very little grass. Thanks

    • Sorry Jane, thats the price to pay when surrounded by trees and on secluded pitches.
Have thinned out the trees a little to see if that helps next year but don’t want to overdo it!

  25. Wonderful campsite

Exactly what we were looking for, a fab mix of informal camping fields and first rate amenities. Clean, friendly, safe and dog friendly with footpaths through fields metres away from our tent!

  26. Great weekend

This is the 3rd time we have been to The Hideaway, camping and a hut. We love it here. The pithes are big enough so you don’t feel you are on top of your camping neighbours. The firepit for each pitch is great allowing the real camping expetience of cooking on an open fire. The no noise policy after 11 is great allowing everyone a good night’s sleep. The facilities are great and the shop stocks the essentials if you need the. Friendly staff and enough to do around and about to keep the whole family occupied. The weekend morning cafe caravan is great if you want a posh coffee or a something yummy as a treat. Highly recommend the Hideaway if you are after a quiet, friendly site.

  27. Lovely peaceful campsite.

We had a fantastic weekend at the hideaway. The pitch was lovely and large with hedges on each side making it feel more private. The firepit was a lovely touch and firewood at 10 pounds for 2 nights seemed reasonable. The coffee van on Saturday and Sunday was just the icing on the cake. Beautiful location and a fab campsite, we will be back!

  28. Well run campsite – mostly

Lovely site, well run and idyllic setting. My only gripe was on the last night there was a big group of people that had totally ignored the ‘no noise after 11′ rule. It got to 1130pm and I had to go and speak to them myself, at which point I was questioned about my own parenting skills because their noise was keeping my child awake. Not exactly Baxby Manors’ fault I know, but the next day there was another bunch of people turning up to join their party which goes against what the ethos of this place seems to be and didn’t see anything that was being done to stop it. The party goers were also utterly unaware of the ‘no noise after 11’ rule so I’d suggest this being stressed a bit more – particularly when large groups turn up like as happened here.

    • Hi, thank you for your feedback although i wish you had told me about the noisy group when you were here then I could have had a quiet word with them! If people don’t tell us until after they have left we can’t do anything about it at the time.
As you have posted your review anonymously i am unable to see when you stayed and work out who the group may have been.
If you could let me know ( via barney@baxbyhideaway.co.uk) which area or pitches they were on, or what dates you stayed, i can hopefully determine who they were and make a note on the system should they attempt to make any large group bookings in the future.

You will have gathered from the website we have a maximum of three pitches in a group but we are/were unaware of any large group bookings recently. I make the ELEVEN7 no noise policy VERY clear on the website so there is no excuse for people to be noisy past 11pm. I am sorry this put a dampener on your stay at The Hideaway but hope you will visit again soon.
      Barney

  29. Lovely campsite!

Absolutely loved our weeks stay at The Hideaway. Such a relaxed site with so much to do nearby. Lovely walk to the nearby Carlton Husthwaite down the track, worth a walk back on the road to stop at the honesty cafe on the road back. Great to be able to have a campfire at each pit and well worth hiring the tripod to cook over the fire too. We’ve already booked a further week next year!

  30. Baxby experience

It was a lovely hidden patch of nature! I loved being able to make my own bonfire and the little caravan of heaven makes amazing pizzas, coffees and pastries!! I would have liked a little more for the kids to do like a park or competition something like that but apart from that it was a lovely trip away!!

  31. Only 1 thing

The only thing I’d say that could have improved our stay is if there could be a field for families with older children although the young children near us were well behaved it’s not always the case. But totally perfect place to come thank you.

  32. Definitely a hide-away!

Great campsite. Chilled out because of sensible rules (and not selfish ‘suit yourself’ culture). Really appreciated 11-7 quietness, a car pack for cars, and respect for our environment- recycling investment and campfire provision. Wash and loo facilities A1! Good little shop and breakfast caravan. Well priced, well run and yes a little off the beaten track and a real ‘get away from it all’

  33. A little gem of a site

If you’re looking for peace and quiet, getting close to nature, spacious pitches and real campfires, look no further. There’s plenty of space for kids to explore and, although there are no facilities specifically for them, ours have never been bored. Barney, the owner, is a really friendly guy and keeps the place in tip-top condition.

  34. odd shoe thing

I thought the site was great and the facilities very good – exceptional in fact. The only thing I found weird is the shoes in plastic bags thing. The only place I think you should be putting your feet in plastic bags is Buckingham Palace or my mum’s house on a bad day. You definitely shouldn’t need to do it when camping! I know this is a small thing but it’s a really odd thing to ask campers to do. It’s also something I’ve literally never been asked to do at any other campsite. anyway, besides that – great job! Hopefully we’ll be back!

    • Hi Paul, thanks for the review.
The shoe covers thing is a “learnt from past experience” thing & really just makes the whole Hideaway experience more enjoyable for you and your fellow campers, no one wants to be showering and walking barefoot on muddy floors! This is why the facilities are exceptionally clean and why we pride ourselves on this. At the end of the day we are 100+ people in a field on a farm and i know you would have been horrified at how muddy the shower rooms became if we didn’t suggest wearing some Crocs or similar indoor footwear (or the shoe covers).
We don’t insist on people wearing them we just hope people can see why we suggest it and then appreciate the cleanliness later 🙂

  35. A Campers Paradise

We’ve been camping now for 14yrs and this site is definitely the best we have been too. Facilities are great, clean and modern. Drying room was great for wet clothes and the site shop had some cracking local beers and ciders to try by the camp fire. We honestly can’t fault this site and the location is great for visiting all the attractions North Yorkshire offer.

  36. Great campsite

We stumbled upon this little gem by trawling through online searches for somewhere to camp , so glad we did. Booking online is simple and you even get to choose where you pitch. The site is well kept with great facilities. The availability of the fire pit to have campfire and also hire tripod to cook on it is worth coming back for alone! The van selling hot drinks and pastries of a morning is a great idea. In fact the only thing I think that could’ve improved our stay was if the van also did bacon butties! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Hideaway.

  37. Fantastic site

This was my kids first camping trip so we wanted somewhere that allowed open fires so they could toast marshmallows on an evening and sit round the fire chatting. The site was very family friendly, safe with all cars parked away from tents and very quiet with an 11 pm noise curfew. Perfect for their first introduction to camping.

  38. It was lovely, was expecting a tad more

We stayed as a family of 5 with 3 small children in a tent (non-electric). It was a lovely, organised and clean campsite. When we first arrived the lady in the shop looked like she was ready for home, I gave her a big smile and didn’t get one in return. I asked where we needed to park our car and she gave me a whole verbal list of where to park and where everything was and what time things closed and opened, I couldn’t remember everything she said. The parking spot was a bit too tight for my liking but manageable. The spot to pitch our tent was a nice size, the firepit add on is ah-mazing, love it! The toilets and shower facilities are clean and great, only things I would change is there are no windows or something in place to get rid of smells. You have to keep pressing the shower button which is a bit of a pain and the hairdryer there is way too weak. It would be good to either have a proper hairdryer that actually blows strong air or a place to plug in a hairdryer. The washing-up facilities, fridge and freezers etc was great also. The coffee from the caravan was really nice. The bin facilities were good, I think we recycled a lot more than we would’ve done because of the way it was set up. I would go again but only as a couple. There was a park just over the road but besides that there wasn’t really anything for the kids to do and we were hoping to do some walks but there weren’t any and the one around the campsite was too overgrown so couldn’t do that. I saw glimpses of Barney and he looks a very friendly chappy. Overall the campsite is really good.

  39. Best camping place we have ever been to!

A lot of thoughts and efforts have been laboured to this place – definitely a campsite with a soul! The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor is a clean, tidy campsite with many thoughtful facilities such as the controlled-temperature drying room, access to fridge/freezer, access to charging points and many others. It is also in a good spot for people who wants to explore York!

  40. Great visit again

This is our 2nd visit to the Hideaway and once again we have had a great time, the pitches are big, the fire pits excellent for chatting around and catching up and the children enjoyed exploring the surrounding areas and its location for a good walk.

  41. The best campsite we have been to for years

We stayed at The Hideaway in our tent with two young boys in August. The pitches were a great size with lots of room for the boys to playmand although you cannot drive and park on the camping field we were right next to where our car was parked. The fire pit was a huge success and we had a great camp fire, it was lovely to see all the other campers doing the same. We bought logs from the shop for Ģ6. We visited the local pub where there was a fun day going on with a bbq and bouncy castle. We received a lovely welcome there and would definitely return. The local playground was a hit with the boys too. All in all we had a great stay!

  42. Amazing peaceful place

Love how peaceful the camp site it just wished there was more activities in the day, we also didn’t manage to catch pizza night as we wasn’t there on a Friday. But would definitely return the cleanliness of the camp is amazing and the staff are fab!

  43. August Bank Holiday weekend at The Hideaway.

We visited The Hideaway for a long (5 day) weekend over August Bank Holiday as a group of friends and family. We all absolutely loved our time there, not just because the sun blazed for the entire time! The pitches are large and the fire pits are fantastic, just so cosy to cuddle up round and admire the stars in the evening. The children (age 12-7) spent their time exploring the forest and surrounding areas and came back full of tales of the things they had seen. There is a brilliant playground a short walk off site and the food at the Plum and Partridge was superb. The 11pm noise ban is strictly adhered to which was much appreciated by all. The toilets and showers are lovely and plentiful so there was minimal queuing (though we did try and go at off peak times). We’d gone prepared with food but had a slight malfunction (the pizzas are lovely but don’t rely on them to completely fill a hungry family!) so we’d cooked the next day’s meal too and bought supplies at the site shop for the next day. We could get pasta but a jar of the quick chuck it in pasta sauce would have been very handy too! Otherwise the shop is well stocked with the essentials. We loved our time there and have unanimously voted to return next summer.

  44. Perfect camping

For the last 2 August bank holidays, our group of friends have gone to baxby. It’s such a lovely setting, the pitches are a very generous size, with the added bonus of the fire pits, they’re brilliant! The facilities are great, tho I could shout at a few people for leaving their mucky shoes on in the toilets!! Great toilets and showers, the drying room is a good addition. There has been so much thought put in to the layout, with each area feeling quite secluded and private. Selling the local cider is a good idea, it would be a fab idea to extend the shop a little. The visiting local butcher means you get delicious meat delivered to the door, delicious coffees and fresh pastries in the morning, and the addition of the pizza night…well that was yummy (despite the queues tho I believe there will be some more investment in this area) you have thought of everything, I love the fact that it’s all local businesses supporting each other. The only shame is that the newly opened pub/restaurant is not really appropriate for campers, we would all prefer something more rustic! Love the place, Barney and his kids are so welcoming and friendly. We love it so much, we arrived home and booked in for next year again!!! Continued success to you, it really is a credit to you

  45. Fabulous fire pits

We had another wonderful stay at the Hideaway. Barney was really helpful in suggesting where to pitch our tents as there had been a lot of rain. As usual, facilities were very clean and well-maintained. We absolutely love the site! The site was really quiet in the evening; it was lovely sitting round the firepit, enjoying the amazing stars.

  46. Lovely wedding

My wife and I got married at the Hideaway; we had an a wonderful time and if we could we would do it all here again; already planning on coming back next year for our anniversary!

  47. First impressions.

The most clean and modern bathrooms I have been to whilst camping, they were very up to standard! Lovely and peaceful area, was nice to see birds flying so close and hear the owls at night. Overall, great place to go camping and will definitely come again

  48. our kind of place

We have only been camping 5 times and have been here for 4 of them. We love the big pitches and fire pits. There is no laid on entertainment which we love and plenty of space for children to make their own. We also love the fact that its camping without caravans and cars are not allowed on pitches Toilet block and pot wash are good and kept well with plenty of hot water although it only takes one person to leave a muddy floor.

  49. Brilliant place !!!!

Brilliant place, we love it here and will be booking again for next year. The staff are amazing, really helpful and the coffee caravan is amazing!! Facilities are always clean and tidy, pure luxury. Couldn’t recommend enough

  50. The hideaway@baxby manor

Great little camp site with pitches big enough for our 8 man tent plus porch. Nice little shop and a caravan on site serving breakfast and also pizzas on a Friday night. Shower block and toilets were immaculate as was pot washing area. There was also a beck running through the site that the kids could play in. Only downside was there was no play area on site but there is one at the top of a hill off site.

  51. PLace to play for kids

We stayed at the Bell Tents and enjoyed the stays, however it would have been great if there were more spaces between the tents for kids to play around. There was limited open space where we stayed outside the bell tent location as it was busy and there were lots of private tents around. The children’s play area was really good and we spent a lot of time there. I completely enjoyed the time with the family. Keep improving 🙂

  52. Yet another fantastic break

Have stayed at the Hideaway many times. Cannot fault it in any way. Perfect little site to relax and enjoy good company. This break was to spend time with an old school friend- there’s no better way to have a catch-up than enjoying a drink and a laugh by the camp fire!

  53. Can’t recommend highly enough

Beautiful site with 5star facilities, lovely staff and lots to do. We will definitely be back xx loved the hooting of the owls and the awesome views of the stars too xx

  54. Facilities

It would have been nice to have a few children’s facilities there such as a playground and other things fir the children to do. There was a lovely playground about 5 minutes walk away though.

  55. Hideaway

We had a lovely warm 4 nights in August in our tent. The firepits were good for fires and cooking. Take plenty of your own logs as we sourced some cheaper in Ripon. As it was warm, there were loads of flies in the shower blocks and kitchen – not sure what could be done about it. Laundry/dry room was fab and like a steam room and were ideal for wet towels and clothes. Indoor Potwash room was fab too! Very tidy site and my boys enjoyed it. We’ll be back in the future. Tents were safe when we went out for the day too! Only a pub in the local village (with Plum the ginger cat) sat on the seating outside. No shops in the village.

  56. Excellent campsite

Perfect place to stay. Very clean and modern facilities. The ability to have campfires is what camping is all about. The only downside is there isn’t nothing to do on the evenings especially for the children

  57. Super stay at the hideaway

The children & I had a great 3 night stay at the hideaway – the bel tent was perfectly equipped & positioned. The site has clearly been well planned and managed. The wash facilities were the best I’ve seen at campsites and their eco philosophy is to be greatly admired. The surrounding area is beaituful & we enjoyed our visit to York which was only a 30 minute drive away. Would definitely recommend.

  58. Excellent!

The Hideaway was perfect! Peace & quiet, spotlessly clean and the staff couldn’t be more friendly or helpful if they tried. We’re already planning our next stay!

  59. Excellent camp site

The first time out for over 20 yrs and the experience was fantastic. We will definitely be going back. We chose the campsite because it is designed to be a relaxing nature place (has noise restrictions etc) and it develivered.

  60. Holiday Highlights

All the camp facilities were superb – our first experience of cooking on a fire pit was a success and the Bell Tents were so well equipped it was certainly a little home from home. Thank you to Barney and Katie for looking after us so well. From talking to fellow campers it was clear that many of them return year after year which speaks volumes. Lisa Janes was also a little extra that was a welcome sight on a drizzly morning. In particular I loved the environmental ethos of the site. It’s good to know that we can still tread lightly, even on holiday!

  61. One night stay

Very friendly and small campsite with good rules regarding noise, pets and large groups that everyone seemed to adhere to. Facilities are clean and modern with a well stocked shop. Enjoyed the little caravan serving pastries and quality coffee on a morning. Nice to see everyone using the firepits to cook thier evening meals. Wished there were onsite activities for kids or safer areas to explore. I am not an experienced camper and thought this was the perfect introduction to the idea.

  62. The nettley path of doooooom

We will be back! The only thing i would like is a little more maintainance of the path down to thw adult only pitches. I got stung a fair bit walking to and form T30. Nothing else. Beautiful location, splendid isolation and a cracking pitch.

  63. very peaceful

This campsite is by far the quietest and most peaceful we have ever been on, staff and other campers were very friendly. If you like nature this is for you.Plenty of space per pitch and each with it’s own fire pit which made the evenings. My only quibble was the shower space, the floor space to dry off and dress was wet with the shower but we got round that by bunking into a sink cubicle!!!! No more wet pyjama bottoms!! Definitely going back again and again!! Loved it!

  64. Good facilities, nice site

A peaceful location and good quality facilities. The campfires are a lovely touch and help create a nice ambeiance and friendly atmosphere.

  65. Great adult-only section in lovely, small campsite

The campsite is a nice, relatively small size. We stayed in the adult bit which was fantastic – the pitches felt very private and weren’t too far from everything else. Amenities good and cleaned regularly. Fire pit excellent, well worth getting a tripod. Rest of campsite looked great – tents a good spacing apart.

  66. Great Campsite

Can’t fault the site at all. Plenty to see and do in surrounding areas. The shower and toilet areas were the best I’ve come across at any campsite.

  67. Great stay at The Hideaway

Our second time did not disappoint – facilities are great and in keeping with the beautiful surroundings. Such a shame that people abuse the bin area requiring the lids to be locked- just can’t understand that mentality. Lots of balsam by the stream – why not do a balsam bash weekend on a reduced rate?! Greatly appreciated the chance to overstay the checkout time so we had a dry tent to pack up – thanks for the flexibility and friendliness!

  68. Fantastic stay

Kids Loved staying near the stream on pitch 24 and 25. Really well spaced out pitches and lovely treat to have croissants and coffee for breakfast, great tripods to cook barbq food on – much prefer this to charcoal, went to easingwold maze-loads cheaper than York maze – simple but kids loved it and went to Sutton bank – lovely stay, we will be back! Considered going to local pub but food and reviews didn’t look to cater for campers which was a shame.

  69. Space, nature and good facilities

We had a wonderful stay at the Hideaway. As a family, we are still relatively new to camping, but this was undoubtedly the best campsite we have stayed at to date. It has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere and we very much felt close to nature. There is a fantastic amount of space between each pitch and the fire pits were enjoyed by everyone. The facilities were clear and well maintained. It is a very good base for days out and without question, we would return to the Hideaway.

  70. Wonderful site

Came for a relaxing break and got everything we could have wanted. Very relaxing, excellent toilet and shower facilities and a really nice touch having the option of a real camp fire. Will definitely be back.

  71. My favourite site by far!

We came as a family of 4 with 2 young children. My husband was worried about the lack of children’s facilities but he needn’t have worried as it was perfect! Kids don’t need any more than some open space and they can have a whale of a time! The toilets and showers were lovely and clean and beautifully modern – the best I’ve come across while camping. Actual hot showers was a treat!! The shop is well equipped and we felt prices were very reasonable. The pitch itself was spacious and we loved that although the campsite was fully booked it was anything but cramped! The strict noise rules are mostly respected and if not, a quick text to Barney (the chief!) and he’ll soon deal with it. The washing facilities are great – washing up liquid and scouters are provided, and there is a fridge and freezers if you want to store perishables. Lots of phone charging points if you can’t do without! And a really handy drying room should you need it. We didn’t use it, but the catering can was really pretty and a lovely touch too. It fit into the surroundings beautifully. My boys loved the little touches such as the ‘shhhh don’t want the troll’ sign at the bridge, making sure we were silent as we passed. This is my favourite campsite yet, and we’ll definitely be back!

  72. Fantastic campsite!!!

Absolutely brilliant campsite, just what we wanted. Spacious, clean, beautiful surroundings, friendly staff and superb lattes in the morning! Definitely recommend to others, in fact, already have done! WE WILL BE BACK!!!!!

  73. Really well organised and relaxed campsite without caravans or camper vans.

Staff were great and very helpful. Made every effort to encourage people to keep communal spaces clean but some people ignored instructions. Swing barbecues great to hire. Campfire on every pitch excellent. Adult only area very private and the pitches further away from main campsite were the quietest and darkest. Good recommendations of local pubs and walks.

  74. fantastic weekend

had a fantastic weekend in the Bell Tent, the site was lovely and clear with a shop to buy logs and a butcher who came in the morning to sell meat. There was a caravan where you could get coffees and pastries. Definitely would come back again.

  75. Brilliant time!

Pros – Fire Pit, pitch TE2 – excellent, really liked how secluded it felt and really good size. Shower block. Cons – Not enough bags of logs on Saturday night so we ran out very early on, disappointing as this was a big attraction for us. Showers need a shelf and and on off button rather than pressing every 5 seconds. Pub in the village, we went on Saturday lunchtime – walked in and walked out, no-one in, no atmosphere and very overpriced, a lunch menu might attract more custom.

  76. Couples retreat rather than family site

Lovely quiet campsite, good pitches, loved being able to have a campfire. Not too great for children as no playground on site (village one requires adult attendance as too far away) and no wide open space to play games e.g football due to intentionally uncut grass. Just glad we brought the kids bikes as something to do. Rest of time stayed by camp. Depends what you are looking for in a camp. Lovely campsite but could do with more facilities for children

    • Thanks for your feedback Fiona. We like to keep things simple and encourage children (and adults!) to create their own fun and games and keep their and your imagination running wild too! Good old fashioned fun! 🙂
We have no intention of having a children’s play area I am afraid as we do not have the space but mainly for the reasons given above.

  77. Excellent!

Such a lovely site, well maintained and organised. Very generous and comfortable distance between pitches. Amazing toilet block and facilities. What a treat each and every pitch having it’s own fire pit, just perfect for toasting marshmallows. Can see why people suggest children play areas, however I understand why you don’t have any. This would encourage noise and chaos, the hideaway provides a good opportunity for creative, imaginative play. We avoided the local pub as not camper friendly and very expensive. The Fauconberg Arms at Coxwold was perfect. A great weekend had by all. Thank you Barney and Katie.

  78. Another great stay

Baxby is an excellent place to stay whether you’re camping or glamping. The site is the best I’ve seen in terms of little extras that have been thought about by the helpful ‘cheif’ Barney including the on-site shop. cloths in the bathrooms to keep it tidy, a fridge so that you’re milk and bacon stay cold for the morning and best of all is that every pitch/pod gets their own campfire. Can’t recommend it highly enough!!

  79. Hideaway campground review

The visit was not as appreciated as our first due to the level of care taken by the more numerous campers this time not looking after the wash facilities as well. Because it was busier it also became apparent that the car parking spaces available were not large enough to load and unload vehicles from the side doors, which was a problem for us as we are not tall people who can load/unload our roof box without standing on the ledge of the car door after it is fully open!

  80. First trip to the hideaway

We saw this campsite on ukcampsites website. Upon arrival there is dedicated parking while you checkin. The staff were friendly and helpfull when describing where park, the facilities and any rules. The first full day it rained constantly ( not the owners fault 🙂 ) Despite this the toilet/shower block was always clean. This is helped by most campers using the provided blue boot covers to stop mud being walked into the toilet/shower area. Everyone seems to leave cardboard at reception which can be used to get your fire started as every pitch has a fire pit which is a very nice touch (one of the reasons we booked this site as we like a campfire). We will definetly be going back next year.

  81. The perfect ‘ hideaway ‘

The perfect ‘ hideaway ‘ to escape to. Lovely site in a beautiful location. The pitch & the on site facilities 10 out of 10. Friendly & helpful staff. No complaints whatsoever !!!

  82. First visit

We were heading home from Cornwall to Edinburgh and chose to stay at Baxby to break up the journey and take in York. It wasn’t the easiest to locate but the instructions given before hand help make it clear. The pitch was fine, we would have preferred a hook up but none were available at this busy time. The pitch was large and had its own fire pit which was amazing to sit round at night. The toilets etc were of a very high standard and a real highlight. The caravan for breakfast pastries, tea/coffee was perfect and a cool touch!

  83. Hideaway with a camp fire

Had a great time here with kids and friends once the weather improved. If it rains it’s a bit of a washout as the site relies heavily on entertaining yourself in the great outdoors; nature, stream, camp fires which is what attracted us to it but equally it’s best point can be it’s downfall when it rains! Super relaxed environment super safe feeling about the place and kids enjoyed the freedom of roaming about. Campfires at night make the best memories. Kids cried when leaving but I knew rain was coming so was glad to get away!

  84. Clean and peaceful site.

Perfect if looking for peace and quiet. We stayed in the adults only part. Facilities are good, would have preferred more than one hairdryer as had to wait for turn, but this would not stop me from returning. Good sized pitches and thoughtfully provided wheelbarrow to take bags from car to pitch, which is great. Landscaped well to help enjoy nature.

  85. Lovely peaceful hideaway!

Had a wonderful stay at the hideaway – 2 nights following a 3 night stay near robin hoods bay. Campsite was attractive, excellent facilities – great showers and wash facilities (although shower button timer could do with being extended!) – firepits are an EXCELLENT bonus! Had lovely fire bbq’s and toasted marshmallows! Very tranquil – can see the stars really well and quite sheltered so not windy. Little coffee caravan was welcome in the morning! Delicious latte and pain au chocolat! Drying room and wash up room were great! If you stay and like animals definitely go to beacon alpacas just down the road for a guided alpaca walk! Was a fantastic activity! Cant think of any negatives! Great helpful service and had a great time!

  86. Fabulous Campsite

The Hideaway is amazing. Beautiful location, excellent modern clean facilities, great camp fire on each pitch that you can cook on. This was our 3rd visit and we’ll definitely be back. Love this site – highly recommend.

  87. Great camp site

The camp site is lovely. The fire pits are a good. The shower and toilets are new & clean. You can arrange for BBQ food to be delivered to the site and there is a pastry & coffee caravan which is great. The shop is also equipped with all you need. We had a fantastic weekend.

  88. Glamping for beginners

Spent a fantastic 2 nights in a superior bell tent with 2 children aged 8 and 3. The girls loved the tent and their special “camping beds”. All the basics needed for a memorable stay we’re provided and we loved cooking our sausages over the fire pit. The campsite was quiet and made a relaxing base from which to explore the surrounding area. Would definitely recommend.

  89. Family friendly and awesome!

We specifically chose this site for a couple of reasons, the campfire in each pitch and the no noise after 11 rule. We had pitch 22 and it was lovely. The pitches are really good sized and the campfire set up is brilliant. You can hire a cooking tripod for £5 for the length of your stay and a £20 refundable deposit so could introduce the children to proper campfire cooking (the toasted marshmallows and smores were a bonus!) The wash facilities are the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve stayed on a lot of campsites. The rule of no shoes/blue overshoe protectors meant they were kept pretty clean (there were some people who refused to pay attention to that which is bound to happen and not the fault of the site) What I really loved is how large the fields were that had the pitches on that could have easily held so many more pitches but the site owner has decided to keep a large middle section for wild flowers and grass so the fields weren’t packed with tents and it didn’t feel like we were packed in like cattle like some places we’ve visited. We had some issues with the no noise after 11 and the personal music (headphones only) rule but the staff make rounds to make sure these are being enforced. These problems were from people who have been multiple times and seem to think that because they were returning customers they could get away with it. This was not the case and were also made to comply so as not to ruin the experience for the other campers. The site is pet friendly, had a good little on site shop, fabulous recycling facilities (make sure you take carrier bags for rubbish, the bins won’t take bin liner size bags!) and a great caravan conversion coffee shop in the mornings. I can honestly say this is the best campsite I’ve been to, the location is great for the park and ride into York and it’s proximity to many other family orientated places to visit. I would not hesitate to recommend this site to friends and family (although I’d like to keep it as my little secret!) and will most definitely be returning. Thank you Barney and team for a wonderful 8 night stay, it was a pleasure to stay on your site.

  90. A brilliant weekend at The Hideaway

We went here with my family and my friend’s family and we couldn’t be more impressed. The facilities are second to none and the eco credentials really impressed us. There isn’t a children’s play-park on site, but that didn’t stop ours from having a brilliant time playing nearby in the copse (there is a park a little walk outside the campsite). We visited Helmsley open-air swimming pool on Saturday (it was a bit nippy) and then went in to Helmsley for lunch afterwards. We had beautiful weather the whole time we were there, and we loved the fire rings. You can hire a grill for the fire rings for cooking which we didn’t do but we would definitely do this next time. Liza-Jane’s Vintage Kitchen served up brilliant coffees and even my vegan friend was super impressed by the dairy-alternative mocha. There was a butcher on-site on the Saturday morning which allowed us to get BBQ provisions and because the campsite provides fridges we were able to keep everything fresh. There is a 7-11 rule about noise which was enforced and the site just had a really lovely, family feel. We will definitely return

  91. Fantastic

A small campsite with outstanding facilities and in a fantastic location. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The place was clean and warm and great showers. Quiet by 11 so brilliant if u have children. Would definitely recommend and will visit again .

  92. Second stay and won’t be our last!

we’ve visited Barney and his family twice now and what can we say!, his little ‘Hideaway’ is just that!, its the sort of camp you make your own fun and games, the field is bog enough for rounders and cricket with ALL other campers joining us for a game everyday!, showers, toilets etc are second to none, spotless, small but well stocked shop, fire pits at every tent point with the option to hire a tripod for cooking,, all really good ides from Barney, i hate to tell people to go and visit as its our little secret of paradise but GO!!, its a must!, theres no bingo and no noisey discos so if thats your bag don’t bother!, the 11-7am noise restrictions are a brilliant way to keep the likes of us going back year upon year, we love you Barney!!,, TE3,4,and 5 are out favourite spots as the big filed is on your doors step, The Jacksons xx

  93. Love The Hideaway

We’ve stayed here twice (once in a tent and once in an eco pod) and cannot rate this place highly enough. All of the staff are friendly and helpful. The washing and hygiene facilities are excellent. Love the addition of a breakfast camper – the mocha was delicious and very welcome! There isn’t a play area for the kids but that is kind of what makes it more peaceful and our kids didn’t need one because we enjoyed a lovely countryside walk and then dinner by the campfire. Can’t wait to go again!

  94. nice place – bit pricey for adult and child

Lovely place and good situation for north yorks NP. Great that parking was off site. No cars on grass etc. All good facilities and good to have no shoes/blue overshoes for bathrooms. Also fire pits helped with safety re open fires. Price was a bit high for single parent – one adult /one child – on the website there was no option for this and I wondered if 2 adults was cheaper? £50 for 2 nights seems a lot esp when no hookup.

  95. A Perfect Hideaway

We love The Hideaway & have stayed 4 times now. The pitches are a good size & each have their own fire pit (which are great to sit around on an evening toasting marshmallows). The eco friendly facilities are modern & well maintained & Barney is very passionate about recycling. The shop is well stocked for your camping needs & the addition of the caravan serving fresh coffee & pastries each morning is delightful. The local butcher makes deliveries on certain days (the steak was amazing). Our children love having the freedom to play outside all day & the village park & tennis courts are only a short walk away. Each time we return Barney has made small improvements such as the eco washing up liquid provided in the pot wash room. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

  96. First time glampers…

Stayed in a Bell Tent, great facilities, especially fire pits and communal block. Fabulous location. One thing that may add would be a specific outdoor play area for children to meet each other and play together – this could be done in a tasteful way in keeping with the ethos of the campsite / surroundings (think wooden open ended play equipment / resources as opposed to brightly coloured plastic / metal park)

  97. The Sanctuary

Had a lovely 4 night stay at Baxby. Second time on site but first time in the adults only section. We found pros and cons to this section. It was very peaceful, even managed a lie in and also managed to have a campfire on the first night when the rain never let due to over hanging trees. Downside it doesnt get much sun light so the ground did become rather muddy due to all the rain (this section has just opened so suppose bit of trial and error). Overall the facilities are clean and tidy and the staff very helpful. Little shop on site which sells all the necessities. Its a relaxed site and we love the open fire pits (keep you very warm at night).

  98. Recommend Baxby Manor without hesitation

Beautiful campsite in lovely surroundings. Lovely friendly, helpful staff. If I have to find a negative point it would be that the breakfast van didn’t do their gorgeous savoury pastries on weekdays.

  99. Away from it all

Relaxing and quiet. No riff raff or clubhouse entertainment. Back to the good old days, cooking out on a real camp fire and making simplified camping really work. Happy days.

  100. Lovely campsite to enjoy with family and friends

Just spent the weekend at the Hideaway. Lovely campsite. Pitches are generously sized and all of them are lovely and flat! Every pitch has a fire pit which is great. Plenty of woods and a stream for kids to play in. Would have been nice to have a climbing frame too. Even a drying room on site which is very handy. Facilities nice and clean. Nice pub within walking distance. Rather a lot of rules! We’ll definitely be back in the future.

  101. Only the weather could have made it better…

We spent 4 nights here, a nice small to medium sized campsite, good sized pitches, real fires allowed and excellent toilet /shower facilities. Friendly staff and handy for all of the wonders of Yorkshire. My only niggle, shop prices – we don’t mind a reasonable mark up but Ģ8.50 for a Ģ4.99 bottle of wine is doing the sales figures no favours!

  102. Wonderful site

We’ve just spent a week there and we all agreed that it’s one of the best sites we’ve stayed on. The facilities are great and I love the fact that the site was mainly tents. The highlight for me was the fire pit on each pitch. It was lovely to look around at night to see the fires burning. I did worry that not being able to park near the tent would be an issue, but the reality was the opposite. I loved the car free site, much more pleasant during the week and packing up actually was smoother than normal as we had to think about it…. The only downside was the shop opening hours, 9.15am opening and 6pm closing, which we missed most days a we were off exploring the area before 9 and often not back until after 6. However saying that we still manage to buy logs and the delicious local cider. A wonderful site and one we will definitely return to.

  103. Hideaway review

Have visited The Hideaway before so knew how good the facilities were. Impressed that access road had been upgraded. As usual facilities were well maintained and clean. Rubbish and recycling area had been redesigned to encourage people to think about what they were throwing away, unfortunately this just encourages thoughtless people to leave large bags of rubbish next to the bins. Majority of people at campsite respect the facilities, however spoilt by few that refuse to swap, cover shoes before entering washroom area.

  104. Great place to stay

Big site but subdivided into sections so it doesn’t feel huge. Nestled into wildlife – love the fact David Bellamy has input into nature sites. Just a lovely campsite.

  105. Our Stay at the Hideaway July 2017

The Hiseaway is a beautiful campsite – there are allocated pitches and parking spaces (no cars on the grass) which everyone has space. The facilities are very good – a single toilet block which is kept clean with push button showers with proper hot water and the toilet block itself is nice and warm. The only issue with the toilet block is the taps – children may will have issues using them as they are push down button ones that are quite stiff. They have a vintage caravan onsite selling hot drinks and breakfast items at weekends and weekdays during school holidays. Each pitch has a fire pit and you can hire a BBQ tripod to use and purchase logs to burn. There’s a shop onsite offering campsite essentials and a few little luxury extras. The surrounding area has loads to do – its right on the edge of the North York Moors so plenty to do for everyone. All in all a great site and one we will definitely go back to!

  106. Camp fires and meadows

We first went to the Hideaway five years ago just after it opened and loved the open nature of the pitches ( all tents /pods are around the edge of fields, so you are not hemmed in ) the lovely washrooms, and the campfire which comes with each pitch. After five years nothing had changed, apart from it getting more popular, and the grass in the middle of each field had been allowed to grow with wildflowers etc, with cut paths criss-crossing. Still lovely – would go again.

  107. Lovely camp site, however…

Family of four stayed for a week. Well kept site with decent facilities, camp fires a great touch. Bathrooms fine but taps very hard to push on, especially tricky for youngsters, and 9 second burst of water in showers (yes I counted) a bit short. A washing machine would have been helpful too. Great area, lots to do, but wouldn’t stay at site again as it was quite pricey for a camping pitch (over £200 for a week) not sure we found the ‘soul’. Didn’t really see the owners much, we stopped to say goodbye when we were leaving, otherwise we could have disappeared without notice.

  108. WOW

What a fantastic find this campsite was. We were looking for a campsite close to York and I am so glad we chose to come to Baxby Manor, everything about it was fantastic. From our beautiful pitch close to the river with a firepit to sit in front of a roaring fire everynight watching the owls swooping about the sky, to the immaculate toilets and showers which were the nicest, cleanest facilities we have every had camping and so well looked after with hot water at all times of the day and night. Fridge and freezer facilities to use and a drying room which we luckily did not need to use as the weather was on our side. The staff were equally helpful and friendly. Have been recommending to all our family and friends and we will be definitely be back.

  109. Relaxing stay at the hideaway

We enjoyed our 5 nights at the hideaway. The site is great and really well laid out. The showers and toilets were really modern, clean and loads of hot water. My kids loved the shop. It had a great variety of items. There’s some much to do in the local area. Most evenings we walked to the local park – it’s brilliant and there’s even an adult exercise area. The nearby Carlton Inn is amazing. I had a delicious steak pie followed by apple crumble.

  110. Shhh don’t tell it’s fabulous!

Amazing, a wonderful natural spot with superb facilities for us as a family it was perfect and our bell tent was a great treat. We will be back with our own tent, by far the best campsite we have ever stayed at

  111. Open and clean

Lovely open site with plenty of space for tents, shades etc, do take own shade as if sunny trees are not big enough to protect. Did not try local pub but were happy with all facilities and availabilty of staff. Very clean etc

  112. Best campsite we have ever visited.

Great campsite. Clean, small and well run. Excellent facilities always clean. Spacious plots with fire pits. Quiet rural location perfect for relaxing. Very quiet at night

  113. Lovely campsite

We stayed in one of the large Bell Tents and had a fabulous time. The camp site was lovely and the facilities clean. There is a great Eco ethos to the site. The children had lots of fun playing in the stream. We definitely plan to return.

  114. Peaceful quiet beautiful

Absolutely loved it at The Hideaway spacious pitches all with individual fire pit. One of the reasons I chose this site was that it had wheelchair accessible shadower/wc. This was one of the best ones I have stayed at, plenty of room to manoeuvre my wheelchair, rails in all the right places shower was on a slider rail and not a push button and a drop down seat even the mirror was in the correct position plus spotlessly clean. Had a walk down and looked at the adult only section if I was able to manage without ehu I would be really tempted it was like a secret garden each pitch in its own area which seemed lovely and secluded pull along wagons were provided for campers to transfer equipment from car park also wheelbarrows for anyone to use as parking is not by tents each pitch has it marked parking bay. Really peaceful at night as the no noise after 11pm and before 7am only sounds we heard were owls and other animals, definitely need a torch for going outside at night. As we were only there for two nights didn’t go anywhere on the full day we were there just enjoyed the peace and warm weather. There is a small flying club very near but sound of planes did not bother us and my husband enjoyed seeing them. Will definitely visit again even sat nav found it with no problem even though the web site does give how to get there directions so as not to end up down farm track.

  115. Beautiful and peaceful secluded campsite

Enjoyed stay at this beautiful secluded campsite; appreciated the amount of space allocated to each pitch and also the firepit for each pitch. Location excellent for access to North Yorkshire area. Appreciated the cleanliness of the toilets and washrooms and also the rules for quietness after 11pm.

  116. Brilliant “boutique” campsite

We loved the ecofriendly approach. The fires pits were fantastic. Everyone respected the curfew and the site rules. The provision of cleaning cloths and squidgy mops meant people also wiped facilities after themselves and removed shoes in the toilet block so everything was super clean. The site really suits its name as we felt like we’d had a relaxing hideaway escape. Plus we loved the surrounding area, especially the outdoor swimming pool at Helmsley and the Carlton Inn at Carlton husthwaite. It was a great base our young family for a day trip to York, as well as the seaside and cycling in the local area.

  117. Lovely well organised site with a focus on nature and peaceful relaxation

Really enjoyed our stay with easy access to York and the moors. Well organised, beautifully clean and kept cars and noise to an absolute minimum. It was great to be able to choose our position on the site when we booked and the reduced rate for our short stay booked only a few days before was great. The nearest shop is 3 miles away and although the site shop provides most necessities make sure you take a pint of milk with you as the shop might have run out by the time you’ve arrived and pitched and need a cup of tea! However, the facilities were great including a shared fridge and freezer and lots of hot water in the immaculate showers. Next time we will visit when the deliveries for camp fires and breakfast are available as our trip from Monday to Friday meant we missed out. Also the catering van that looked lovely didn’t open outside school holidays during the week. We are not complaining but we did feel disappointed. A beautiful site though and we will certainly return.

  118. Lovely campsite, can’t wait to return

The Hideaway@Baxby was one of our best camping experiences as a family. Beautiful site, with exceptional facilities. Kids loved the stream (more entertaining than a playground, for us) and we all loved the fire pit and tripod grill. Excellent venue, we are already planning our next trip! Thank you for your hospitality.

  119. Lovely site

Good spot for visiting Dales, Moors, coast, York and Harrogate. All readily accessible and being in The Sanctuary gave the option of staying on site with seclusion, peace and quiet and birdsong. Campfire too!

  120. Lovely site, good first glamping experience

I enjoyed my midweek break glamping, and loved the tent, the outdoor cooking and the peace and quiet. The site is beautiful, spacious, quiet and very natural. I would possibly come here again, but not with children. Although our daughter found friends to play with, there wasn’t much to hand to entertain e.g. You can’t really play in the river, the local Park is quite a walk etc. The local pub is very posh and expensive, so there want anywhere to go to have a drink, and there are no shops within walking distance. Whilst the campsite shop has a few essentials, obviously It isn’t open long hours or evenings. The things that WOULD make me return to Hideaway for definite would be: – a small play area for kids with some park type equipment on site as I would feel very comfortable and safe letting my child play freely on the site with me watching from a distance – a little bar / pub – I’ve been to another glamping site that had a tiny bar in keeping with the vibe of the site where you could sit outside – also adds a nice social aspect to meet other campers – a snack bar of some kind that sold a small selection of meals – whilst it’s great camping and cooking outdoors, I do like to have a rest from Cooking on holiday. Also adds social aspect. The caravan is a great idea but it’s only open sat & sun mornings which is a bit pointless. Without an accessible local pub as well…. So – lovely site and we had a great time but at the moment I’m not dying to return as for me I need a bit more around to hand.

  121. The Amazing Hideaway at Baxby.

What can I say, but fantastic, amazing, best place ever. Been before and was really excited to return. Stayed for 4 nights, great value for money, Barney and all the staff are exceptional. Clean tidy, eco friendly. Private, and just an experience that anyone who loves the camping lifestyle should try. Its a must. !! The evenings are very special, as you make your tea over the bbq, and to finish it off with toasting marshmellows over the campfire. We took our two schnauzers Willow and Jasper, and they were so relaxed, well behavied, and they enjoyed every second of it. Thank you to all at The Hideaway, we look forward to returning very soon. 122. Weekend at The Hideaway.

My family and I, recently had a weekend at the Hideaway. First impression of the site is that it’s very well laid out (and flat), and clean and tidy. The campsite was enjoyed by the children, with freedom to play on the open areas in front of the tents, also able to play is the stream as this was not too deep. Very generous pitch sizes allows you to relax around your tent, and the fire pits ares great for the evening. If your considering this area, York is only 1/2 an hour away, and also only 1/2 hour away is Camphill adventure park – worth looking up (Quad bikes, “go ape” type activity, woodland adventure etc…) On conclusion of the weekend, i’d say this is a campsite designed and run by someone who has done a lot of camping in the past, and knows what people want/need from their camping experience. Great time – definitely be back.

  123. Stay at Baxby Manor

We stayed two nights in a bell tent. Every thing was fantastic. The location of the site is beautiful and really relaxing. The facilities were close and very clean. I would highly recommend this site.

  124. Nice site

Lovely campsite and facilities although on the expensive side. Given the money you pay to stay here I wouldn’t really expect to have to mop the floor after ourselves but saying that it does help to keep facilities clean and tidy

    • Thanks for the feedback and I am glad that you found the facilities clean and tidy.
We do not ask people to mop the floor, we just leave a discrete notice next to the mop in the shower rooms saying ; “Please feel free to use the mop” 🙂
The facilities are mopped and cleaned thoroughly every day.
As you discovered, the little notice (and the cloths left next to each sink) does help and people are conscious that the facilities are for everyone to use and campers keep them nice and clean, not just for themselves but for others too.

  125. Tranquil oasis

We only stayed for a night, passing through in a campervan. The site is a wonderful haven of tranquility. Very thoughtfully laid out with great attention to the environment. We would have loved to stay for longer.

  126. Fun in the Sun at the Hideaway, a hidden gem in an idyllic corner of North Yorkshire

A friend suggested we try the Hideaway for our annual “Daughters and Dads” camping trip. It proved to be a great recommendation! It lives up to its name, tucked away down a long drive in amongst rolling fields and country lanes in a quiet corner of North Yorkshire. The site has great pitches and a well-stocked little shop and coffee caravan. The washing facilities are among the best I have seen and the fact that you can cook over open fire (not often the case these days) adds to the whole experience. Beacon Alpacas, about a mile away, was a brilliant experience for any animal lovers, and our girls loved getting to walk and feed these fantastic beasts.

  127. A brief but pleasant stay

The booking was easy to make, the site was easy to find. On arrival we had good instructions and made our way to the pitch which was large, secluded and private. The whole camp site was immaculate. Facilities were excellent, showers and toilets very clean and the drying room a pleasant bonus. The little shop was staffed by friendly people and had a good variety of basics. We really enjoyed our stay, my first ever camping trip, certainly not my last

  128. Fantastic place to stay

We brought our 10 year old son camping here for the very first time! And loved it, everything is clean, tidy, and modern. We booked this site because we wanted a real fire. Cannot recommend enough

  129. Absolute bliss

Love this place. This was our 4th stay and have already book to stay again. Only issue is everyone else loves it too so getting in can be hard. It’s peaceful, beautiful and tranquil.

  130. Week Lng Stay at the Hideaway

We were very pleased when we arrived to find a lovely rural site, our pitch was in The Sanctuary a separate area for adults only, we had a stream at the end of the pitch which was surrounded by alders and wild flowers. The facilities on site were first class with clean and neat shower blocks and great pot washing area, the small shop onsite dealt with most of the essentials. Within the pot washing area there are fridges and freezers for campers to keep food, drink and cold blocks for cool boxes. We only have one complaint, on the night before we left our cold blocks were removed from the freezer for no good reason as they all had our surname written clearly on them, this meant we had to throw away all our food when we got home as it hadn’t been chilled, it seemed a somewhat petty thing to do and has rather put us off returning.

    • Hi Michael, Im sorry that your blocks were removed from the freezer. As clearly explained in the Pot-Wash room and on the notices attached to the complimentary fridges/freezers so long as everything has your departure date clearly marked there is no reason anything should be removed, unless of course the departure date has passed and items have been left. If items are marked with only a pitch number or a name then we cannot easily determine if you have left or are still on site.

  131. Great spacious plots

We stayed for 3 nights in the Sanctuary and it was fantastic. Huge plot, private and couldn’t wish for a more peaceful location with all the comfort and great amenities if you wanted them.

  132. Keep up the great work

The noise curfew is fundamental to the atmosphere of the park A ban on music at all hours would be better and screaming children contained in one area There are thousands of noisy ‘holiday parks’ but precious few quiet and peaceful retreats keep up the great work

  133. Glamping weekend

This little gem of a campsite is fantastic for all ages, the Pod we stayed in was clean tidy and very welcoming, the shower and toilet block was the cleanest toilet block we have ever used on a campsite, A very quaint shop with local produce at a reasonable price all round great experience.

  134. Wonderful place!

We had a fabulous weekend at the wonderful place that is the hideaway. We stayed in one of the family bell tents with our two young daughters and not only was it very clean and tidy but it was also very well equipped for us as first time campers (ok glampers). The facilities were clean and very well maintained. Most other campers also respected the no shoes or wear overshoes policy at muddy times which helped to keep the toilets and showers clean for all. My only suggestion would be that a small playground would be welcome for the children but we will definitely be returning to one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets.

  135. 40th birthday treat

We stayed at the Hideaway for my husband’s birthday and had a great time. We were very impressed with the belle tent and the quality of facilities on site.

  136. Weekend stay

We had a lovely weekend staying @ the hideaway. Weather was nice which helped. Lovely place with nice, flat, big sites for everybody. Our own campfire pit was fantastic, we ran out of wood. Toilets and potwashing was great and very posh and ckean. Only downside was there seemed to big a lot of big groups staying. On our field with 10 sites, we were the only family staying on our own. Didn’t work for any socialising for our kids, and we felt a bit hemmed in. Disappointing when the website actually says no big group bookings allowed. Luckily it was only a weekend not a whole week. Other than that we’ll be back and hope it was a one off.

  137. Little getaway

A great campsite and surprisingly easy to reach despite its rural location! Unfortunately it was raining/overcast when my girlfriend and I went, but we were nonetheless still impressed with the campsite and we definitely want to return to enjoy it in decent weather! Would recommend to anyone who wants a quiet place to relax, most activities are most certainly a drive away but this should not deter someone from staying.

  138. Absolutely delightful camp site, will definitely be back!

Very enjoyable stay. We stayed in the quiet, child free part which was delightfully quiet and lovely. We had to move for the last day because of availability conflict but the staff were extremely helpful in sorting it out with minimal bother for us. Would definitely recommend the site to anyone, it is delightful in every way!

  139. Hard to beat.

We first visited The Hideaway 4 years ago and have been back every year since. Sometimes more that twice a year. The local area has plenty to see, the camp is quiet& clean with good faculties always in great condition. It’s hard to find a campsite this good for this price across the country.

  140. Great weekend away in a idyllic place!

My boyfriend and I stayed in a bell tent and it was lovely, the decking with table and chairs outside was ideal and then the fire pit which adds fun bur also safety to your stay as you’re not worried about burning anything that shouldn’t be. The toilets were of a high standard and clean, wish they had plugs but I believe this was for health and safety so understandable. Just an overall great stay and Barney was lovely, friendly and helpful.

  141. Happy campers

I spent 2 days camping in May half term hols with my daughter and my mam and we had the best time! We loved the space and beautiful countryside views not to mention toasting marshmallows on the fire. Wonderful experience for my daughter who spent hours playing with the friends she’d made. If your looking for a peaceful back to nature experience I would highly recommend the hideaway. Can’t wait to return!

  142. Great place

Love this place, been 4/5 times over last few years , Barney the owner is spot on , friendly and always on hand to help , lovely quite and peaceful and all campers adhere to no loud noise , facilitiies always clean and pitches are a very good size , well recommend

  143. Beautiful, peaceful, well cared for site

We stayed in ‘the sanctuary’ for adults only. It was very private, peaceful and a haven for wildlife. Even on the main site there is plenty of space between pitches and a fire pit for each pitch. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring our grandchildren here. No activities or clubhouse, but then again no loud, inconsiderate or drunken campers. Showers/toilets clean and warm. Best site we have visited so far. There is not much in the village, one pub and no shops at all. However easingwold is only a few miles away and the bus stops not too far from the site

  144. It’s a must!

Fantastic site, Barney the site owner is amazing, always willing to help and answer any queries. Facilities are warm and very clean, lots of attention to detail. A site not to be missed!

  145. A really nice quiet weekend away

We found everything apart from the cleanliness of the ladies wash facilities excellent. Really surprised ladies using the facilities leave them in the condition they do ! Gents facilities were fine !

  146. Love this site

Great campsite .. lovely surroundings .. my only complaint would be Parents letting their children use the bathrooms as a playroom and people with the need to dispose of glass bottles at 6:30 am …it’s such a lovely site and Barney is passionate about it and it’s eco friendliness …please don’t spoil it for others

  147. A gem of a site and cracking weather made it a tip top weekend

The hideaway@Baxby Manor was suggested by a friend who found the site on the internet as the number 1 camp site in North Yorkshire. The website and information given was simple and easy to follow. Booking was even easier and paying before in full made checking in and out hassle free. Barnaby was excellent in answering a question of mine regarding an extra car and very accommodating with his response. Can I also say what a delight it was when speaking to him. He kept things simple and effective. The pitches themselves were big and the fire pits a great idea. The toilets, showers etc were fantastic and justified the weekend fee of a two night stay. The area itself was superb, a gentle 6 mile walk in blistering heat followed a trip to the Plum and Partridge refreshed all souls. Highly recommend this site. Ease of access off the A1M via the A19 Thirsk or through Boroughbridge and the back roads. I hope to be back.

  148. the perfect hideway

This is an excellent campsite, anyone wishing to relax & get away from it all couldn’t ask for anymore , once your here you could be miles from anywhere . hence the name Hideaway. This coupled with fire pits on every pitch & the availability to buy bags of logs just makes it that more special & most of the pitches are a good size where your not squeezed in next to neighbouring campers. the toilets/showers are warm & are cleaned daily, there is a drying room & good washroom facilities with a large fridge & two freezers. Barney the proprietor & staff are always on hand & make you feel welcome on arrival. Finally the campsite is located near to Historical York , Thirsk & the Yorkshire moors & your never far from the coast of Scarborough & Whitby etc. All in all this is perfect for good weekend or longer break away.

  149. Our stay

We loved the campsite, for our first camping trip it has certainly set the bar very high. The fact each pitch has a campfire was amazing. Very impressed with the shower / wash facilities and shop was well stocked. The caravan serving coffee and breakfast was very welcome in the morning. We just felt pressure to keep our young children quiet in the morning, I wonder whether one family field could be more relaxed about keeping noise down until 8am, with a 4am wake up it was a long time to try and keep quiet!!

  150. First but not the last visit

Beauty site with plenty of room on each pitch so you don’t feel like you are intruding on other people’s pitches. We had a fabulous weekend, thank you

  151. Peaceful retreat close to many attractions in North Yorkshire

The Hideaway is a lovely campsite with larger than average pitches for tents, each with their own fire pit. We stayed in an Eco Pod which was great for us, as it meant we didn’t need to pitch a tent. The shower block/ pot wash are excellent and very clean. I was impressed that there was a hairdryer and a fridge for communal use. The drying room would also be useful for walkers in wet weather. The little shop has any essentials you may have forgotten from home. I even bought a single egg one morning! No cars are allowed on the grass but wheelbarrows are supplied to transport your things, a nice touch! We will definitely return here one day in the future.

  152. Excellent stay

Just returned from a 3 night stay. Distance time, but not the last. Beautiful site, the meadow grass left to grow between pitches gave a lovely relaxed feel. This meant there was less playing area for children, but the pitches were so large that it didn’t seem to matter too much. Excellent shower/toilet blocks. It felt very safe. We have already been looking at when we can return.

  153. Hidden gem

We visited the hideaway at the weekend and were blessed with very good weather. We caught up with some very good friends of ours and were able to take advantage of hiring a tripod and cooking over a log fire in the pit that had been build near each pitch. We were amazed that everyone appeared to respect the quiet site rules and kept noise to a minimum after 11. We will definitely make another visit.

  154. My new favourite campsite

Just spent 3 nights mid-week in The Sanctuary at The Hideaway and it has just become my new favourite campsite. There were times when we would forget we were even on a campsite, this is about as close as you can get to wild camping. The facilities were immaculate, Barney was friendly and helpful. Just beware the local cider it is deceptively easy to drink! My only negative was the speed bumps on the approach road, they could do with being a bit more car friendly.

  155. Short break at the hideaway

We had a lovely stay at the hideaway recently. My partner & I spent 2 nights here midweek in June after reading lots of great reviews on the facebook page. The campsite was perfect, it was really well laid out with plenty of space & fantastic facilities. I was quiet when we where there as it was midweek & term time but even if it had been busier there was plenty of space. The share facilities where great, lovely toilet/wash facilities. We stayed in one of the double ecopods which was perfect for us and quiet roomy. The hideway was very reasonably priced too. While staying here we visited the local pub in the village just a 10min walk from the campsite for dinner one evening & a few drinks. The staff here where very friendly and the food was delicious, lovely place. We visited the North yoor moors during our stay, we took our bikes along with us & headed to Sutton Bank National park for the day, a lovely place for walking & cycling and was only 20mins drive away from the campsite.

  156. A lovely quiet, peaceful place to stay

We stayed in a double eco-pod at the Hideaway which was perfect for a long summer weekend. The campsite was easy to find due to Barney the owner’s directions. The cars are all parked away from the tent/pod pitches but carrying our kit was made as simple as possible due to well marked routes and a supply of wheelbarrows. In fact everything at the Hideaway has been incredibly well thought out to make life as peaceful as possible without having to work hard! We will definitely stay again and have already recommended the place to friends and family.

  157. Clean, Friendly and Excellent Location

Site facilities were the best I’ve seen in terms of cleanliness and functionality. Staff were always helpful and pleasant and the site itself was brilliantly set out to prevent overcrowding. Idea of camp fires and luggage trolleys were perfect. Addition of serenity area was good. Location to surrounding areas of interest was perfect! Would definitely return.

  158. Weekend away

Fab two-nighter that felt like longer with friends and family. The kids all had a great time and the fire pits were a huge hit and made the perfect BBQ. This site is the perfect example of you get what you pay for. Will definitely return.

  159. Another lovely stay at the hideaway

We stayed two nights in a bell tent on this occasion. We had friends staying in an adjacent bell tent, their first stay here. As always, Barney and the team did everything to make us feel welcome – it’s a little like ‘coming home’! Even though the weather wasn’t perfect (pouring rain one day), it was a lovely, relaxing weekend. We will be back soon! 🙂

  160. A lovely site, well thought out

This was our second visit to your site in the space of 2 months. The site is so clean and thought out the ‘hot room’ to dry towels is such a bonus. Only 2 things I would like to see improve …. the ‘no groups’ and ‘letting us off this ince’ was disappointing we have a big family and enjoy family time together. Not all groups are noise we r respectful and was the second time we came and would hope the group could return again! Only other thing that would b a bonus would b a small play area for the children as it’s hard to keep them away from the cars in their bikes with nowhere else to play. Great place overall we do love it here and rates so much higher than anywhere else by far.

  161. Fantastic as always

We love this site in fact, i think it’s our firm favorite now! We’ve stayed on different pitches and each brings it’s own benefits. The little shop has also really improved and is so handy! Barny is superb and we couldn’t ask for more.

  162. A great place to stay

Our first visit to The Hideaway and unfortunately our last. This was our final trip away under canvas, we are upgrading to a tin tent and sadly no caravans at The Hideaway. I could almost be persuaded to get the tent out again just to visit the Hideaway. The pitches are generous, the facilities spotless, and the site staff great. A real gem.

  163. Amazing spot with great, clean facilities

We’ve stayed before and will continue to do so in the future… we love this park, it’s great facilities and the energy that Barney puts into helping everyone.

  164. Great site

Loved the campsite used the ecopod for 2 nights, returning with my tent in three weeks time. Loved the peace and quiet of the site,no rowdy people, everyone enjoying the site.

  165. Nice weekend

The site is very nice fire pits privacy peaceful parking spaces could be a bit wider for unloading and getting in and out will definitely be back

  166. Absolutely Fantastic

I honestly don’t think I’ll find a better campsite. Loved the fire pits, they make sure the pitch sizes are great. Lovely atmosphere, the best facilities I’ve come across on any site, a wonderful pub (Carlton Inn) just down the road and helpful owner. Brilliant and can’t wait to go back.

  167. Half term getaway

The Hideaway provides every opportunity for a relaxing break. The site is easily accessible and within easy reach of many towns and attractions. The small shop is well stocked with essentials (including airbeds, which we forgot to take!!) We made full use of the laundry/drying room which is perfect for towels and wet gear as well as the first class shower/washing facilities. The pitches are well separated and fresh coffee and croissant are also available as well as the Camp Food Company, providing excellent locally sourced BBQ essentials.

  168. Great place to stay

We’ve camped before at The Hideaway and have already booked our next stay. The campsite is fairly small (Big benefit) and has clean, good quality facilities. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The waste and noise policies make the stay very enjoyable as they enable you to enjoy the rural setting to the full. The provision for camp fires and the local kids playground are also big positives. Only minor issue is they could do with another fridge on site as the one provided does get a little full.

  169. fantastic site!

Fantastic site in beautiful surroundings. Welcoming and friendly staff. Excellent facilities, fire pit is great touch and the good weather meant we used this every night to cook on. Great local attractions highly recommended are: york bird of prey centre, sutton bank national park cycle trail where we hired bikes for a great price, village of helmsley andcdden camp. A great place to eat is the oak tree pub about 15 mins drive with excellent food and service at a good price. Would definitely return to this lovely campsite.

  170. 2nd year in a row

After a successful weekend at baxby manor last year we re booked again and it was awesome!!! The huts are cute but spacious for a family of 4, Barney is really helpful and the facilities are great. Nice play area to walk too and lots to do nearby.

  171. Fabulous campsite

Loved the hideaway, very friendly and welcoming site, prices in shop were cheap. Good facilities and very spacious pitches. Loved the campfire. Looking forwards to returning again

  172. Perfect Holiday

We recently stayed at The Hideaway @Baxby Moor for the first time and were absolutely thrilled with our wee break. We told the campsite we were arriving late and that afternoon we received a phone call to explain where our pitch was as the office would be closed, and asking if we would like some logs putting on our pitch for the fire pit. We had our own parking space numbered with our pitch number and a wee pull along trailer to transport our belongings from the car to the tent pitch. The sanctuary part of the campsite was so quiet and beautiful with the stream running right by our pitch. We woke up to birds singing each morning and the facilities were super clean. There is even a drying room, super handy on a wet day. Couldn’t recommend this place more highly. Its very well organised and we will definitely be back again soon.

  173. Nicola, Leeds

Lovely stay in one of the bell tents. Beautiful surroundings and very quaint accommodation, nice for it to be a little different without losing the ‘camping’ feeling. Staff were efficient, friendly and helpful and to top it off great facilities. We will return to stay for a longer period.

  174. The site you want to keep to yourself

We have been to The Hideaway many times from the first year it opened at least once per year, by far the best site we have been to and we have travelled all over the country. Would recommend to anybody that want a peaceful and tranquil setting with fire pits to keep you warm through the late evening whilst cooking over the pit or just toasting your marshmallow.

  175. Lovely family-friendly campsite

The Hideaway is a really lovely site, tucked away in the countryside. The pitches are nicely spaced, and arranged within small hedged areas, so you never feel crowded. Access was easy and the directions clear (although they do need to be updated to reflect the fact that the lane is now paved). The facilities are very good. We especially enjoyed having our own fire-pit, with logs (and local cider!) available to buy on-site. The drying room was really useful. If I have a quibble, it’s that the push taps in the washroom were very hard to operate (impossible for kids), and that the fixed-temperature showers were just too hot for my littlest one. But overall, we had a lovely stay and would definitely recommend.

  176. Fabulous site

Fabulous place to stay. Lovely and quiet. Plenty of space between tents. Excellent toilet /washing facilities with plenty of warm water for the showers. Loved cooking on our fire pit bbq. Gorgeous area especially for walkers

  177. Great place to stay

With everything you need for camping on site it makes a great place to stay. The addition of a “mobile cafe ” with great coffee and pastries is very welcome when you first rise and take a walk to the facilities. The location is superb very “hidden” but within easy walking of a newly opened pub/restaurant in the small village. There are lots of walks nearby and watching the microlights on the airfield next door is a treat. The campsite is superbly run and would recommend a visit.

  178. 2nd time and as amazing as the 1st time

We love this place, it’s so relaxing, the facilities are great and it ticks all the boxes for us. Thank you, we’ll be back again soon.

  179. Great stay

We stayed in one of your belt tents with our young son. Great way for us to get back into camping after having him. Great location and facilities.

  180. Perfect Holiday

We recently stayed at The Hideaway @Baxby Manor for the first time and were absolutely thrilled with our wee break. We told the campsite we were arriving late and that afternoon we received a phone call to explain where our pitch was as the office would be closed, and asking if we would like some logs putting on our pitch for the fire pit. 181. Fun weekend

We thoroughly enjoyed are weekend at The Hideaway great location and spacious campsite to make your own entertainment or just chill out round the fire pit, just what we like. We also loved the treats from Liza Jane’s vintage caravan. I can’t think of anything they need to improve on, maybe an extra fridge would be handy when the site is full. Barney was very helpful and happy to help us when needed. It has everything you need for a relaxing break away with plenty attractions, eating places and beautiful scenery close by. I love the fact it doesn’t have a club house or children’s park on site as this would spoil the lovely countryside and ambience, it’s good for children to appreciate the countryside and make up their own games and entertainment. The safety aspect was fine for me and my 11 year old daughter. I think with having the long track with speed ramps before you enter the site takes care of any unwanted visitors. Great parking facilities on hard ground and near the tents is perfect too and love the Glamping accommodation as would find it difficult putting up a tent on my own. We Just loved the place and haven’t stop raving about it to my friends and family. Definitely be back!

  182. Unique but room for improvement

The Hideaway was a popular venue for family /friendship groups. Shower/toilet block was modern but unsure how often it was inspected. The idea of wearing and handling plastic overshoes was frankly impractical and unhygienic. I only saw one water point…admittedly I didn’t walk all round the site but they certainly were not frequently placed and available. Why such a shortage of electric points ? Pitches were attractive, offering campers lots of space. Rubbish disposal needs looking at. ..no point lecturing campers about using small bin bags once they have arrived on site…..without small bin bags ! Price per night is a little high….I paid 40% less in Leyburn for a pitch with water, electricity and convenient waste disposal. Finally…try reassessing your style of information for campers…it comes across as “Do this….don’t do this…”.

    • Hi Rob,
I’m sorry you feel various improvements could be make and would not visit again with your motorhome but appreciate your feedback.
As you will have discovered The Hideaway is nothing like a Motorhome and Caravan Club site, things here are slightly different, as stated on the website, this is the reason most people stay here.

The facilities are cleaned thoroughly every day and as either myself or my cousin Katie is here all day every day we often use the facilities ourselves so always have a quick check to make sure everything is ship-shape. We would like to think and believe many people are community spirited enough to either tell us or do something about it themselves if something isn’t quite right.  This is normally the case and i often see campers running the mop or a cloth around! Lol.
The plastic shoe covers are really for your convenience, in wet weather it just helps to keep the facilities clean and tidy, they are not compulsory and we do suggest on the booking confirmation email that goes out to everyone who books that people bring a pair of Crocs or flip-flops to wear inside but some people prefer to wear the shoe covers. The facilities are for you and your fellow campers to use and enjoy, (such as filling buckets of hot water for your little ones to play in ;-)) so without having a 24/7 attendant in residence it does depend somewhat on campers keeping them clean for themselves.

All campsites are governed by a license to operate and no pitch must be more than 90m from a drinking water point and this is the case at The Hideaway, there are five water points on the site for 40 pitches and in my case no pitch is more than 50m away, your pitch was 20 m from the nearest point.

We are an eco-camping site and the electric supply to the whole site is restricted as it would take a new supply being dug in to increase the electric supply, something which i believe to not be particularly eco-friendly. We also have solar panels in the next field contributing to the site supply. All lighting on site, which is minimal, is LED and the shower block itself is Carbon Neutral.

We have bins for Landfill (which we try to discourage people from using so much!), a glass bin and bins for all other recycling and actively encourage everyone to recycle whilst at The Hideaway however we ask that people do not fill a large black bin liners with rubbish (you don’t need to use small bags, just not fill large ones) due to the fact that the lids on the wheelie bins are locked there is just a small postbox-like slot and large bags filled with rubbish won’t fit through. The lids are locked because when they were left open some people used the Hideaway as a tip; people would fill the bins with beds, tables, chairs, BBQ’s, etc! By asking people to keep volumes of rubbish small this enables rubbish to be deposited through the smaller post-box-like flaps in the bins and significantly reduces the amount of household items left for us to dispose of. Being a very rural site it is extremely hard (and expensive!) for us to dispose of rubbish, but especially larger items.

I would be open to and very keen on hearing of your suggestions Rob on better ways to display information for campers, please do email me directly on barney@baxbyhideaway.co.uk and we can discuss this.

  183. Has everything

Beautiful place to camp – especially for first time like us. Facilities first class, evenings spent round camp fire with kids memorable – hoping to come back soon!

  184. Can’t recommend Baxby highly enough

Best campsite I know. Quiet, perfectly located, great wash facilities and the 2300hrs lights out is perfect for families. To top it all, there are some wonderful places to visit within an hour’s drive.

  185. A little piece of heaven!

This is our very first venture into camping so we weren’t sure what to expect. The Hideaway was recommended by friends and exceeded our expectations by far. The Hideaway is beautifully kept with generous pitches and absolutely superb facilities. The showers and toilets are first class, spotlessly clean, modern and toasty. There were even fresh flowers! Fab washing up area with lots of fridge and freezer space and the staff were so friendly and helpful. If you’re looking for peace and quiet then this is the place. All we could hear was beautiful birdsong (ok. There was a cow with a persistent cough somewhere…..but….) it was a little piece of heaven and we just can’t wait to go back ??

  186. The hideaway…..

It a beautiful place we had fab time there with friends it’s got everything you could possibly need, there’s a small shop which has a good selection of things, the showers are lovely and well kept. We loved that there was a fire pit with the pitch. So good we’re going back again very soon ??

  187. A place of relaxation and family time

Perfect little campsite away from it all. Lovely quiet family atmosphere with campfires and a great place to relax. Within a short drive of loads of great places to visit in North Yorkshire.

  188. Better than I hoped for

We stayed here for the weekend a family of three, with another couple in their own tent. We only booked about a week before, but managed to be pitched next to each other. I like the fact that you can actually see which pitch you’ll be on at the time of booking (and get to choose if there are enough). The site it’s self is very well maintained to high standards, clean fully functioning amenities, the pot wash area (inside) was very clean with lovely hot water, cloths and washing up liquid (although perhaps someone may of left that!!). In here there is a very large fridge to store essentials and a chest freezer to store ice blocks, there is also phone charging points in here too. There is a very hot drying room and laundry, fantastic for drying towels, coats etc. On site there is a catering caravan opened on a morning, selling hot drinks, pastries and breakfast sandwiches, we didn’t buy anything but it seemed very popular. Every pitch has a fire pit for your use, you can buy logs (Ģ6.00 a bag) and hire a tripod and grill to cook over the fire for Ģ5.00 for the weekend (Ģ20.00 refundable deposit). Barney (the owner) abides with a strict no noise after 11pm rule which works really well, and recycling is a top priority. We have managed to book again in the not too far future which we are looking forward too. There is no play park here, but that doesn’t seem to stop the children from running around and exploring the area and generally having lots of fun. This is a lovely site, the only negative point I could make was that the toilets and showers were closed for 2 hours for cleaning which left only the one disabled toilet in use (so quite a queue at times!) other than that, both Barney and Katie are lovely helpful, friendly people.

  189. Our favourite campsite!!!!

My partner and I found this campsite online a couple of years ago when we wanted somewhere that allowed campfires……we are so impressed we keep coming back! The facilities are great and nothing is too much trouble even down to letting them now I’m coming so soya milk can be bought in for my latte from the caravan in the morning. I cannot praise this site enough!

  190. Amazing, loved it!

Beautiful site, big pitches and fire pit was amazing. You can tell the owner really cares about the site. The only tiny downside was having to leave site by 11am – after a lie-in and a cooked brekkie it was a bit of a rush to pack up! 12pm would be a bit more relaxing!

  191. Baxby for Peace and Solitude

Excellent site. Only about 1 mile from the A19 but you would never know it. Quiet and tucked away, very peaceful. Staff very helpful and friendly. Loads of space between pitches so privacy ensured. Toilets and showers modern, clean and warm. No complaints whatsoever. We will definitely be returning.

  192. The hideaway will not disappoint

Fabulous friendly QUIET campsite, facilities second to none, total chill out so peaceful, a great get away from it all, each pitch has its own firepit which you can hire a tripod to cook on so didn’t need the bar b que we took.

  193. A Great Bank Holiday Weekend

We booked a last minute yurt for the May bank holiday. The campsite is in a lovely quiet location with lots of beautiful scenery nearby. A great place for people who love nature and walking. The Bell Tent was perfect inside, the seating and firepit outside were a lovely touch. The facilities were always clean and tidy, it was also helpful they had a fridge/freezer. Although we didn’t buy any coffee or cake from the mini food campervan it was nice to have it as an option. Only minor issue was the Bell tent next to us had a young family and the little girl cried a lot in the evening and night, nothing the campsite could have done just a little unlucky. Overall a lovely weekend.

  194. Excellent

We went over bank holiday weekend with my best friends family and found the hideaway exceptional. The facilities are amazing and clean. Although the park was busy we didn’t feel cramped, the pitches are a good size. Excellent idea of the fire pits on every pitch made the evening pleasant tiasying marshmallows on the fire. Well done guys and see you soon

  195. The Hideaway – first trip of what will be many.

This was our first tenting holiday in about 20 years and I’m so glad we came here. the location is fantastic, the facilities were better than many hotels I’ve stayed in and the staff were fantastic. The pitches are nicely sized and well spaced out and theres a fire pit so cremated food all weekend 🙂 Can’t wait to book another weekend / week away.

  196. A hiiden gem!

A friendly welcome when we arrived, The site is in a lovely setting with excellent .super- clean facilities. I love the fact that it is so close to so many interesting places to visit. Castle Howard being the highlight, Will definitely come back . thankyou,

  197. super clean ! Amazing place!

We stayed here for 2 nights for my partners birthday and we couldn’t have asked for a cleaner place ! First impressions were how clean the toilets and showers were ! Even has fresh flowers in. Super helpful and friendly staff! Will definitely be returning with friends. Can’t recommend it enough.

  198. Clean, Friendly and idyllic

The Hideaway is only an hour away for us, so it was fairly local, but it felt like we had found an oasis when we arrived, it was just so clean and peaceful. We only stayed two nights, but due to the great friendly service and the efficient set up, everything was so easy, so I stay felt relaxed and longer. Camp facilities were clean, modern and well thought out( I like the fact there was a fridge available to put essentials in!), compared to other sites we have visited, and with it being fairly small it felt cosy and friendly and safe. We’ll definitely be back!

  199. Our Stay At The Hideaway

Our stay here was so lovely, the weather was cold but the individual campfires mean you can warm yourselves up nicely. You can hire pots and tripods to cool directly on your fire too!! The showers were great and very clean! There was outstandig recycling facilities available and a lovely little shop stocking most essentials and local produce. The camp site was easy to find following the directions online. The pitches were all well kept and clean and the surrounding area was very natural and relaxing. We absolutely loved it here!

  200. Hideaway Retreat

I was after a peaceful, quiet break away with my partner and dog and came across this gem! Beautiful location, lovely site and great staff to welcome you. Each pitch has its own fire pit which is all the entertainment you need of a night. Very good facilities and very eco friendly makes this a site I will return to again and again! If it’s a relaxing break you are after, look no further.

  201. Fabulous Hideaway @ Baxby Manor

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at this site. It was peaceful, with beautiful scenery in easy reach of other spectacular locations and we loved the provision of a fire pit. 6 yr old son enjoyed real outdoor play. We will definitely return.

  202. eco lodge

Beautiful place and surroundings. Very quiet (April) stayed in eco lodge was stunning but no heating or electric which we knew about but did miss it. Some tents have electric hook up and were cheaper to stay in. There is no play area on site but there is one down the road 10 min walk. So if you love a quiet site with camp fires then this is place for you. Very clean. Little shop great staff. Just think im past the camping stage. Talked to other campers with younger children mine is 11. They said they would defo return. Enjoy x

    • Thank you for your review of The Hideaway, I’m glad you enjoyed your stay.
There are no Glamping options with electric at The Hideaway, the tents with hook up that you refer to are pitches where people bring their own tents/campervans. 🙂

  203. The Hideaway – how a Waitrose campsite might be ………

The Hideaway was brilliant, spacious, clean and very well organised site wiith an emphasis on being eco friendly – but sensibly so. This was my first camping trip with my partner and his 13 year old son and my first camping trip in 20 years. I was so pleased I picked the Hideaway because the owners had thought of literally everything and it had a nice, unassuming sort of atmosphere – perfect for us being fairly clueless. They were kind enough to lend an extension cable for our very big pitch. If I have one criticism it was the number of noisy toddlers having tantrums but that is a reflection on its popularity with young families and if I had a young family it would be number 1 on my list. Perhaps an adults only section would be nice though. If you are considering camping in North Yorkshire – the Hideaway would be an excellent choice.

  204. Easter Stay

Disappointed that the pitches I booked carefully due to having very small children and 2 families camping together were given away to someone else. However the stay was brilliant anyway and the owner made sure we had a suitable space. Site was very clean, tidy and facilities were excellent. Lovely stay in lovely surroundings.

    • Hi,thank you for your comments and I am sorry to read you were not on the pitches you wanted. I am unaware of having to move anyone so far this season from the pitches they booked online via the website but i do remember someone booking two pitches online thinking that they were next to each other but in fact they were mistaken and had not looked at the map on the website but as it happened we managed to find two pitches next to each other despite this…but i am glad you enjoyed your stay. 🙂

  205. Lovely site

This was a lovely site and we would consider returning again. It was very tidy and the facilities were really clean. The only downside really was the check in and out times. Check in times were late, you couldn’t arrive before 2pm and check out was very early at 11am which when taking down a tent doesn’t give that much time to pack everything away, these times felt more in line with a hotel booking. I know that you could ask for extended time but this had to be paid at half rates which felt tight as we had already lost a full day as we couldn’t arrive on site until 2pm.

    • Hi, thanks for your comments about check in and out times, I am also happy to read you found the facilities very tidy and really clean.
For the facilities to be this clean though I need the time between 11am and 2pm to clean them. Being a small family business it is just not possible to have an earlier check in or a later check out time, there would not be the time available for me to clean the shower block, Pods and Bell tents.

  206. Amazing site

Loved it here! Massive pitches, friendly staff and the best facilities I’ve seen anywhere – spotlessly clean, modern and lovely and warm!

  207. We really enjoyed everything about the hideaway and will without a doubt be returning. Barney and all the staff work very hard to ensure that the site is kept too a very high standard and are always happy too help.

  208. As lovely as we remembered

Our third visit to The Hideaway after a gap of 2 years and it was just as lovely as we remembered it to be! The toilet/shower block was as warm, clean and welcoming as ever and the small shop had a plentiful supply of local apple juice and cider – which was all we really needed! The best feature of The Hideaway, however, is the fact that there are no adventure playgrounds, games rooms or indeed any form of entertainment other than the natural surroundings. It was great to see our three children making their own fun – and thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process. We also love the fact that at The Hideaway, campfires are positively encouraged; there really is no better way to spend a beautiful, clear, spring evening. We we hope to be back very soon!

  209. Family camping

The hideaway is a lovely site, with fantastic facilities and close to a village park and fabulous bakery van. It’s lovely to be able to have campfires and the griddle plate was great for cooking on. Our only wish would be to have non electric van pitches close together as with young families we found it quite hard to chill with my brother and his family after bedtime.

  210. A little piece of heaven

This was our first ever camping experience made perfect by the natural beauty of the hideaway. No need for internet, phones and television when there are the birds to listen too. Sat around the campfire in the dark with a glass of wine in hand was perfection. Will definitely return and recommend.

  211. The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor

I love this place! We have been on numerrous occasions prior and it never fails to make me relax. Noise is kept to a minimum and it is definitely quiet after 11pm. It is also a haven for wildlife. The facilities are spotless with tons of hot water for showers etc. Each site has its own dedicated firepit and having a fire to sit around greatly enhances the ambience.

  212. Hide away few days it certainly was .

A super mini break.. a definite hide away place to total unwind and relax in amazing countryside and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Amazing amenities ..so clean and well thought out with eco facilities even down to the wheelbarrows to transport your things to the tents or pods. I would certainly visit again ..close enough to visit York and the East coast but likewise you can also sit and chill round the fire pit and unwind ..

  213. Another lovely stay at our favourite campsite

Unfortunately this was just a short overnight stay, but nonetheless was greatly enjoyed, as always. We love the Hideaway! Barney is the most helpful host – nothing is too much trouble! We will be back!

  214. Great visit

Visited in October half term. Had a fab time if chilly. Make sure you bring more clothes and more bedding than you think you need if you visit at this time of year. Loved cooking on open fire and watching the stars!

  215. Lovely, lovely site.

The Hideaway is ideal if you want peace and quiet and to “get away from it all”. If you want “life” and entertaining and “stuff to do” then it would possibly be too quiet, but for my son and I it was just what we wanted. The eco pods are adorable, like little Hobbit Houses, and the site is lovely. The shower/toilet block was spotless and beautifully warm (we were there at Hallowe’en) and even the pot wash was super clean. The staff were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to make sure we had a good stay. We have already booked to go back next year!

  216. Perfect

The perfect autumn getaway. Loved the fire pits, the owls hooting at night and the quietness. The facilities are the very best I’ve experienced and the staff were friendly, really helpful but allowed you your space. You really do have to try the local cider available in the shop. Will definitely be back

  217. Lovely autumn stay……

Stayed at The Hideaway October half term with friends. Lovely site, excellent very clean facilities, electric hook up really appreciated for time of year but only one post for three pitches and it didn’t reach to 3Rd pitch so we had to move tent closer. Drying room also brilliant. No kids facilities on site but I believe playground nearby…..ours entertained themselves!

  218. Hideaway

We recently stayed at the hideaway for 4 nights! Only 3 lots of campers on the site, felt like our very own Hideaway! Facilities immaculate! Staff friendly! Lots of nice walks from park!

  219. Best campsite !

We loved every minute at the Hideaway. Enjoyed the peace and quiet and excellent facilities. Saw some beautiful sunsets followed by relaxing evenings by the campfire.

  220. Excellent campsite

This was our first experience of campervan camping for many years and we were not disappointed with The Hideaway it was superb. The surroundings were beautiful, the staff very friendly and helpful, the shower and loo facilities so up to date and perfectly clean! The whole ambience of the campsite was spot on, Will definitely return.

  221. Love this place

Idyllic and beautiful as always , excellent and extremely clean toilet and shower facilities, really genuinely lovely and helpful staff/owners . Absolutely looking forward to repeat visits in 2017. Fire pits are the added bonus and one reason we return , nothing more relaxing when at the Hideaway..really is an escape for a period of time from the big wide world ..to which we always sadly return… but renewed and entwined and reminisced with the memory of wood smoke and tranquillity and hopeful of when we can escape back here again. Could not recommend this site enough …..We Love it xxx

  222. Couples holiday

Perfect during visit at the end of September. Helpful staff and lovely local cider! Very quiet and loved the fire pit. Good attractions nearby, including York, National Trust and English Heritage properties, Whitby and Robin Hoods Bay are all worth a visit. Go to the Carlton Inn about 1/2 hour walk away, delicious food!

  223. Little Gem

Found this campsite through an internet search and thought it looked good. The site is very peaceful but then we were only one of six campers! It was nice to be able to choose our pitch online when booking. We loved the fact that each pitch had a fire-pit and you could rent tripods and wood to use – you really know you’re camping when you can smell wood smoke! The toilet block looked as though it had only been opened last week: it was exceptionally clean (but there weren’t many campers and we had no rain) and beautifully warm. The showers had plenty of hot water and a spacious changing area. The dish washing area had three sinks and I imagine would be very crowded when the site is full. Barney was extremely helpful and passionate about his eco-campsite. Cars are not parked next to each pitch although wheelbarrows are provided to help you move kit from car to pitch. Free wi-fi is available but only round reception area.

  224. Fab site

Great site without the commercial entertainment, back to nature. Unfortunately our camp neighbours were a little inconsiderate and were on top of us despite the spacious pitches. Good wash facilities and fire pits at each pitch. Will be returning.

  225. Lovely friendly campsite with excellent facilities

The Hideaway is only a small campsite but that makes it feel very safe and friendly. The toilet/shower block is the nicest and cleanest that I have ever seen at a campsite. The pot wash facility is also clean and you even have access to a shared fridge and freezer. Each plot is well sized and has it’s own fire pit which is fantastic for cooler evenings. There isn’t a play park for the kids but they loved playing in the surrounding woods

  226. Excellent place to forget everything

Excellent campsite could not ask for more. The facilities are kept to a very high standard tiolets and the washing up room a spotless. The staff are very helpful and friendly the camping pitches are of a very good size with campfires. You can buy lots from the site office and they are good value I priced lots off the site and the site is cheaper. In my opinion this is a very well looked after site very clean and for me you can’t go wrong would defenatly recommend this site.

  227. Awesome Site

This site was recommended by friends and surpassed all expectations. Everything is catered for and then taken to that extra level without losing is primary values of being associated with David Bellamy’s principles. So much thought has gone into providing unique individual pitches in 4 different areas, all having their own character. Space abounds, wildlife is plentiful including a chorus of birds in the evening and early morning……

  228. Visit and enjoy. Leave it as you find it.

As a returning visitor but by no means a regular camper, this is by far the best campsite I have ever used. Easy to find availability and book online. Very helpful and friendly staff. Rules are there to maintain high standards and ensure people continue to enjoy this little hideaway. The campfire facilities are the icing on the cake.

  229. Last Family Getaway of the Year

We visited in September a late booking thanks to a cancellation. This is one of the best campsites I have been to. The plots are away from cars so you are safer. Each plot has it’s own fire pit for cooking. The shop is well stocked a was run by a couple of staff whilst we were there including the owner. The also have a symbiotic relationship with another business that run a stylish caravan café come takeaway restaurant, so if like us you come unprepared without food, there is hot food available until you are better prepared! The facilities are clean and enclosed in the same building as the shop with disabled access. The quality makes you feel like a hotel rather than a campsite (at least in the bathrooms!) A great stay. The local village currently has it’s pub being redesigned, but there is another one about 30 minutes walk through the countryside in another village.

  230. Wonderful stay

Chilled, peaceful (apart from owls at night but you can’t really complain about that can you?!). lovely clean warm shower block and toilets. Staff so helpful and friendly. We’ll be back next year ??

  231. First Glamping Expereince!

This was our first time experiencing Glamping and The Hideaway @ Baxby Manor was ideal for our first time! The Bell Tent which we stayed in was perfect. We particularly liked our own private decking/ fire pit area. The facilities onsite such as showers/ bathrooms and washing room were outstandingly clean! Couldn’t fault them one bit. The staff were delightful and ever so helpful. The only bad thing I have to say, which isn’t actually about The Hideaway, is that there weren’t many things for us to do in the surrounding area/ villages. Granted everyone has a different idea of activities when they go away but for us, especially during the day, we felt we were struggling to find things to do. Apart from that it was a perfect trip away and would highly recommend it!

  232. Fantastic get away site

Second time at the hideaway & hopefully not the last this is a beautiful site to relax & enjoy camping at its best, the fire pits are excellent for camp cooking or just sitting round, the shower/toilet facilities are excellent & we’re always clean, added bonus of a drying room for wet coats/towels came in handy, no activities as such for children but there were lots of young kids there & not one looked bored!

  233. The Hideaway

Lovely site, our children were free to go explring the site on their own in safety. The facilities are always clean, with friendly notices asking campers to be respectful of others and clean the areas they have used. The staff are warm and friendly. A visit to Liza Jane’s is a must!

  234. Fantastic Place to Stay

Had a 2 night stay for my daughters birthday. We loved every minute of it, gutted we couldn’t stay another night due to the site being full. We will be back soon!!!

  235. Late summer break

We stayed here for 3 nights and didn’t want to leave! The site is well maintained, and the staff were lovely. We loved being able to cook over our pitches own campfire every day and sit out at night keeping warm playing traditional campfire games.

  236. Weekend Glamping

My partner and I spent the weekend in one of your eco Bell Tents which we found cosy and well equipped. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and really liked the wild elements to the campsite. We felt it was easy to find from the A19 and easily accessible with lovely villages close by for pubs and walks. The only downside I felt was the amount of young children messing up the bathroom facilities without parental supervision. Other than that the washroom facilities were much more modern and clean than other places we have stayed.

  237. Fab campsite

Really enjoyed our stay here. Lovely campsite, loved that a lot of space left for natural growth including wild flowers, the spacious pitches, fire pits and eco emphasis. Kids liked exploring around the trees around edge of campsite and also loved the playground nearby. Nice shop onsite and toilets/showers kept clean. Could do with couple more sinks for washing up. Perhaps the owners could consider a washing machine too. We unexpectedly needed to wash sleeping bag halfway through stay but couldn’t…managed though, so not too bothered. Will definitely return.

  238. Do we really have to go back home?

Very satisfied. We always feel welcomed. This was our second visit, and a longer one this time. Excellent base for visiting attractions, took a look at Thirsk, Easingwold (cycled from The Hideaway), visited Ampleforth Abbey (make the best cider, but if you visit the teashop try the apple cake), had a great day out at Beningborough Hall (good place for lunch too). And to ride off all the pub lunches, The Hideaway is perfectly placed for mountain biking, especially at Sutton Bank. Returning for Baxby Fest, cannot wait!

  239. Lovely stay

We stayed in the Superior Bell tent for two nights. We had a lovely time and will be back. The shop is great, well stocked and takes payment by card. Washing facilities are excellent too.

  240. Fantastic place to chill

My first experience of gleaming staying in a double pod. It was brilliant. The whole place is really well thought out and very chilled. 21st century camping.

  241. Family getaway

We are a family of 4, with 2 sons age 3yrs & 7yrs. On arriving at baxby manor a little earlier than expected we sey off for a tour around the campsite. We couldn’t find any children’s play parks but settled with a good old fashioned football and plenty of green space. The camp site was immaculate. We checked in and headed over to our bell tent (which we highly recommend) all the fun of camping without the stress of setting up your own tent. Again the tent was immaculate and the little extras such as camp stove and plates were greatly appreciated. There is very little to do in the village close to the campsite but this didn’t stop us having fun we went on woodland walks and played pooh sticks on the bridge over the river. All in all this is a great place to go to relax and simply chill out with immaculate facilities and welfare areas to complete the experience. This would be a great Base camp for those wishing to go to York and other surrounding areas. Lovely place and we will be back again.

  242. Lovely stay for 2 nights

Barney is really lovely, took time out to help us & was very accommodating. We booked for 2 adults & a 4 year old, when we arrived were given a double bell tent, but straight away Barney helped us find a solution, we had a futon mattress within minutes. My advice however would be to book for an over 5 year old if you want/need a spare bed for your child.

  243. Excellent getaway

We were not too sure what to expect as the site was a little more commercial than we would usually choose but as we were camping for 5 nights we wanted good shower facilities. We could not fault the site, very helpful and friendly staff, small shop on site selling the basics (and the prices were quite reasonable), proper fire pit and you had the option to hire a tripod for cooking over the fire pit which was good idea. There is couple of decent walks off site but its only a 20 minute drive to Sutton Bank and 40 minutes to Knaresborough (Nidd Gorge is a lovely walk). Would definitely return and in 2017 they are opening a adult’s only section.

  244. First stay

This is a fantastic camp site, and very well organised. Unfortunately for us it was pouring down the night we stayed and the pitch we had was a bit of a mud pit. The showers were lovely and warm, sadly the men’s bathroom was slightly flooded and a little dirty but we aren’t sure if that was due to a flux of people using it! Staff were very friendly without being overbearing. The van selling hot chocolate and croissants was much appreciated! Unfortunately with the rain we didn’t get to explore the site, but we do hope to return.

  245. Small & friendly

Nice little campsite, the facilities are conveniently positioned and all the pitches are nicely laid out too. We stayed during the summer holidays when the site was at full capacity but it didn’t feel over crowded. The toilets & showers could have perhaps done with an extra clean during such a busy time although the actual facilities are good and well designed. There was a toddler step to help reach the high sinks and there is a well thought out smaller sink with a soap dispenser handy for little ones too. The parking spaces are a bit of a tight squeeze and although I thought this might have been a problem everyone seemed to manage just fine. There are wheelbarrows on hand to help unloading to your pitch. All in all we thought it was a nice place to camp with a lovely atmosphere.

  246. A stunning hidden gem!

We wanted somewhere quiet and relaxing we could go with our 2 dogs, and thats exactly what we got. The facilities were second to none, the pitches were large and private each housing its own fire pit. The atmosphere was friendly and very rustic, there were owls and rabbits galore. We will be returning soon, with friends in tow as we feel its the best campsite we’ve been to. 10/10 (If you are looking for local pubs, beware!! they all close mid afternoon and the nearest one was a 45 mins walk).

  247. Quiet comfortable and clean

A one night stay in wet conditions meant we did not get the best from this site, would have liked to use more of the facilities. Can confirm site flat and well drained, wash rooms superb. Only criticism is car parking spaces too small, not give enough room to load and unload easily.

  248. Another great stay

Beautiful site, with lots of wild areas. There is lots of space for children to play, but no specific play area for them. Cars are not parked on pitches, so it’s really safe for them to run around. Facilities are top class. We’ve been many times and will return again in future.

  249. Very impressed

This was the first time I’d taken my 2 boys camping so we only stayed for 1 night. We wanted to stay longer as it was just so relaxing. Everybody on the site was very respectful to others. No rowdiness at all. It would be nice to see a bit more to do for children on the site but then again it is super cheap to camp here so having activities would make it more expensive. All in all we had a great time and will certainly return I the future and have already recommended the site to many people.

  250. Beautiful camp site

Peaceful, quiet camp site with excellent facilities & a great little shop selling locally made products. The shower/toilet facilities were clean, modern, warm & draught free. Great to have a large communal fridge for our essentials and a freezer for the ice blocks. I loved the caravan selling hot chocolate and pain au chocolate in the morning. Very helpful, friendly & informative camp site owner. Having a pub in the village of Husthwaite would be the icing on the cake for us, I hear the renovation is due to be completed next year when we will definitely return.

  251. 4th Visit

We have enjoyed another 3 wonderful nights at this brilliant site. Love being here, it’s out 4th visit, feel so relaxed as soon as the tent is up. The site is fabulous with us preferring to stay on the ‘big’ field. The pitches are large and of course the highlight is having the evening camp fire! At night just being able to lay back and get lost in the thousands of stars on a clear night us unforgettable. Enjoyed exploring the beck on a hot day to cool off. The little shop has everything you could need and not get ripped off. The caravan selling teas, coffees and pastries in a morning is heaven. The facilities are always 1st class, although due to the mud/wet grass, the floors in the toilets could do with cleaning twice a day or more instead of once a day. Although there are plenty of signs up and shoe protectors for campers to wear, unfortunately the floors did get in a bit in a state and needed someone to go in and give them a quick clean. Showers are lovely but don’t need to be as hot as they are in the summer months. Just minor issues but certainly not enough to put us off. Overall a brilliant site and cant wait to book again for next year!

  252. Super rural site with a range of accommodation options

Stayed at this site during a weekend trip biking at Sutton Bank and Dalby Forest. Great quiet little spot, clean and lots of emphasis on recycling. Fire pits provided which is a nice touch. Spacious facilities and a small onsite shop. Would highly recommend.

  253. Could be the ideal place to relax

The location, facilities and layout of this site are everything that is needed to deliver on its promise to be a ‘Hideaway’. We were however unfortunate to be sharing the site with a large party of 60 which despite strict observance of the 11 o’clock noise curfew could not help but spoil the peace. The owner dealt with the dissatisfaction of other campers very well and has assured us that he will no longer book parties of more than 3-4 tents. If this is the case, we will return.

  254. What a find!

Just back from a fabulous 2 weeks at the Hideaway. I’m totally torn between wanting to say to the world ‘you must go there’ and keeping it all to myself so that we can go whenever we like! Fabulous staff always ready to stop and help out or just to have a chat with (even when not at work and just bump into them whe out and about!). Best washroom facilities we’ve ever had. Thank you for a great time.

  255. An excellent campsite.

This was our first family camping trip and I am really pleased I chose the Hideaway. It was an excellent site and the facilities were fantastic which led to a brilliant experience. My only gripe and it is a small one is the parking spaces are a little too small, I have a large family car and could not fit my car into the allocated parking space one evening due to some inconsiderate parking by other guests. This was quickly remedied by Barney who allowed me to park in one of the guest spaces, top lad! We loved this site so much we are coming back next week and losing our deposit on another camp site to do so. Keep up the great work.

  256. The rain didn’t make a bit of difference!

What a fantastic place. My niece (8) has wanted to go camping for a while, camping is not my thing so when a friend recommended taking a look at The Hideaway and their “glamping” I had no excuse not to go! Fantastic facilities, wonderful staff and a great weekend had by all. Obviously it rained quite heavily for a lot of the time (August, what do you expect) but it just added to the adventure. Already planning out next trip!

  257. Great Stay

My husband, 13 year old and I have recently come back from our first trip to The Hideaway – booked it based on the great reviews. We weren’t disappointed – we all really enjoyed our 6 night stay. We were blessed with great weather for the first 5 nights. We had a lot of “stuff”, everything but the kitchen sink, but we’re on pitch TE5 which was ideal as less than 2minutes walk between parking slot & pitch and nice not to have vehicles on the camping area to spoil the view. We hired a tripod for the duration and cooked on it 3 nights – the other nights we lit the fire anyway and loved sitting round it at dusk – a real selling point! Great pot wash area, indoors, never had an issue with hot water or queuing and heated on cooler nights, plus large container for washing the large griddle pans. Good loo and shower facilities, wi-fi too – intermittent around the tent, good round the reception/facilities block – didn’t feel we needed to be in contact with the outside world constantly so suited us. Had a local walk round the villages one day and a lovely lunch at The Carlton Inn, Carlton Husthwaite. Day trip to Whitby which we loved, and two days to York – one sightseeing and one shopping as a bribe for the 13 year old! For both Whitby & York, would really recommend the Park & Ride – 」5.60 for the 3 of us for York for about 8 hours and a lot less stress than parking in the city, about the same for Whitby. Tried the local cider one afternoon – very nice (and strong) available from the shop. Bought fresh eggs a couple of mornings for pancakes for breakfast. The only feedback I would give in terms of possible improvement would be that tripods were somehow provided as standard as we did have a neighbour who we gladly lent ours too one night as she had arrived after reception had closed so hadn’t been able to hire one to cook on that night. Also, the lovely young lady who ran the coffee caravan could possibly have done with an assistant some mornings – people were more than happy to queue in the sunshine we had but wouldn’t be the same experience in pouring rain. She coped very well though. In summary, I would definitely recommend this site, lovely part of Yorkshire and lovely helpful people – thanks for a great holiday

  258. Best site we have been on

As the name states it is a hideaway. Great site not over crowded great to have fire pit.toilets, showers very clean. Good idea to take off shoes or put on over shoes to enter toilets. Very enviromentally friendly. Just one small problem the parking spaces are very tight but don’t let that put you off.

  259. Not quite the picturesque setting as shown on website

Initial impression was slightly disappointing as we were expecting scenic views from our bell tent. Instead we were faced with a grass verge and a few trees. Whilst we were aware of the no noise policy after 11pm we hadn’t realised that it actually meant no noise whatsoever and so after spending the first night playing cards in our gazebo (brought ourselves) and laughing amongst ourselves past the curfew hour, we were reprimanded the following morning by the proprietor as someone from the fun police had reported us! I was absolutely gobsmacked! These were the same people who had woken the whole campsite that morning with their little poppets howling and screaming at 6am and had their dog barking whilst tied up outside. Some people just need to know how to chill and enjoy themselves. Maybe it was just unfortunate that we chose the same weekend as the fun police but we’re obviously not the type of clientele that is suited to this particular campsite (probably a mutual feeling) and for that reason will not be returning or recommending.

    • Hello, I’m sorry that you thought the website perceived The Hideaway to be something other that what it is, that is not my intention, most say the website does not do the place justice.
It would be futile me doing saying otherwise really!
I would be interested to know what scenic views you were expecting. The bell tents are situated next to the stream in a sheltered area, as is the whole campsite as described on the website.
We do have a strict no-noise policy from 11pm and the reason I had a quiet word with you on the Saturday morning was because two or three near-by neighbours had approached me that morning as they had been disturbed by you until 12-30am.
As you say The Hideaway is perhaps not for you but i appreciate your feedback.

  260. Never camped before – great place for first timers!

Lovely, clean toilet and shower facilities Tripod BBQ available to hire, every pitch has fire pit, logs available to buy too. Just bring your burgers/sausages. Kids loved it, no TV IPad needed to entertain, just great outdoors and marshmallows to toast. Had a great time, looking forward to next trip.

  261. Family camping trip

Great stay at Hideaway- loved the layout and ethos of site – especially individual fire pits made for community spirit. Lovely to see children running freely. Coffee caravan was a big hit wit has our lot.

  262. We don’t have a bad word to say!

Me and my husband and 2 children stayed here for 4 nights. It is relatively easy to find and only 30 minutes away for us. The park is the most amazing campsite I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting! Its beautiful, quiet, clean and the staff are wonderful! The facilities are super clean and well maintained and let’s face it, you couldn’t ask for more. With the little shop on site with all the necessities there’s nothing else to do but relax around you’re fire a day watch the stars while our little ones snored away after a full day of playing in nature. Wonderful place, wonderful atmosphere, wonderful people. Thank you so much, we’ll be back soon.

  263. Two night saty with family

Return trip to Baxby having stayed previously in a Bell tent there 4 years to the day. This time we returned in a campervan. The campsite is very nice, very peaceful with really excellent and clean facilities/toilets/showers/wifi. It is a quiet camp so no silliness past around 10.30. Mix of people staying, couples young & old and families. Everybody seemed to enjoy their stay. It is a lovely, relaxed place to stay, but there really isn’t anything for children to do on the site itself. So if you are bringing kids be sure to plan some excursions.

  264. Our holiday at Baxby hideaway

We have stayed at the hideaway a few time now and enjoyed every time it’s clean and friendly there are lovely walks around the village they have a snack caravan open every morning for lovely snacks and a meat delivery around the camp site when pre ordered bbq food logs for camp fire a lovely way to chill out at end of day

  265. One night for just me and my daughter

I had stayed at Baxby Manor the previous year in a pod with my young daughter, with my friend and her daughter taking the other pod. This year my daughter begged me to go in a tent, so just the 2 of us booked for a night, and it was also my first time camping solo. Everything went brilliantly. The only small points I would mention – and I am being picky! is that I hadn’t realised which was our firepit site and therefore put my tent up before realising I was so far from the firepit. I realise that there are safety issues, but as I was subsequently deserted by my daughter as she was having fun with new friends, I did feel a bit exposed sat on my own by the firepit in the middle of the field! In retrospect I would put the tent a little further forward in what was a large pitch, or selected a pitch at the top of the field where they appeared to be a bit closer to the pitch and perhaps a bit more private. Luckily I had also bought firelighters, but that was pure fluke, so it would have been helpful to mention that they would be useful upon booking. hot chocolate and croissants were delicious, but we did have to queue for quite a while as there was only one lady working in the caravan. Like I say, I am being picky and we loved it, a beautiful flat camping area, not too busy, very friendly staff and other campers and we will definitely be back!

  266. Single mum!

Stayed in one of the lovely hut with 2 under 4’s. Lovely sight, barney was super helpful and friendly. I found it easy to take away my 2 little ones as the site was small enough that they could play without me worrying but big enough that i didnt have to worry about them disrupting others. Happy memories.

  267. Good but take a chill pill!

Excellent clean facilities, but it is unnecessary to ask us to remove our shoes every time we want to use the toilet. It’s a campsite not a hospital and is mopped daily. Lack of washing machine a big problem if you’re staying longer than a weekend which many people did. I resent being threatened with naming and shaming if noisy after 11. This is excessive as it’s not a boot camp, though appreciated the quiet at night. Although it is common for family sites to be quiet at night.

    • Asking people to remove dirty shoes or wear some shoe socks makes a huge difference to the cleanliness of the “Excellent clean facilities”. It is reassuring that people realise why we ask and that campers keep the facilities clean not just for themselves but for everybody else too.

Even family sites have noise issues especially so in August however at The Hideaway I believe that although some think “naming and shaming” is somewhat excessive I believe you’d be hard pushed to find a full site (150+ people) anywhere else where come 11pm you could hear a pin drop! I would prefer to run the risk of being named and shamed if it meant I was going to get a good nights sleep! 😊

  268. Relaxing by the csmpfire

Just back from a few days at The Hideaway. This is a back to nature site. We loved the campfire idea and as the weather was good we sat out each evening , the night sky was amazing as no light pollution. Drying room was an added bonus as was the fridge and freezers . Showers on site were fab although could have had more hand soap maybe at all basins as one over hand wash sink was more than often empty . I was surprised as this is a family site that there was no baby change area in shower block , making showering a baby/ toddler almost impossible . We did find baby change area in drying room and feel a baby bath left in here or a deeper sink for bathing would be a great added bonus to the site as most family sites we have been to now have a family bathroom . I also feel that prices per pitch should be for a family of four rather than for two adults as most pitches were taken by families this does make a camping trip rather pricey .

  269. Hideaway review

Loved staying at “the hideaway” would definitely stay again, very clean site, and facilities were excellent, Only negative was the vintage breakfast bar, ran out food mid way through the morning, so would recommend getting in line early if you want food, and service was very slow, gave up waiting one particular morning, other than the food issue. The actual campsite site is excellent

  270. Great site!

The only thing that spoil our stay was other inconsiderate campers. Pitching over access to car park, and someone else blocking access to the drinking water! Also kids racing round and round in front of our tent constantly! The actual site is lovely, facilities clean, and super cafe van :-). Just would have been nice if someone could have checked how people were pitching up. Great site if you have kids, but just too noisy for us.

  271. A perfect Hideaway!

Such a lovely campsite.good space, loved the fire pits and the site was very peaceful and relaxing. The showers/toilets wer always clean and nice and modern. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the caravan cafe was lovely. We will definitely return!

  272. Perfect

Our 3rd visit, love this place. Baxby Manor has a special feel to it…love the fire pits and the cooking tripods. Love the clean facilities, the beck and the nice walks to the lovely pubs. Wish I could go more!

  273. A Lovely Little Hideaway

Baxby Manor is perfectly located between the North York Moors & Dales, ideal as a base for touring both, as we did. But also some lovely little towns and villages within walking distance, great for a short hike to soak up the scenery. Great facilities and some brilliant extra touches, such as a really useful shop and the amazing ‘Liza Jane’s Vintage Kitchen’ serving barista coffee and delicious pastries, yum, in the mornings and at sensible prices. Fire pits are a lovely touch, giving a real camping experience.

  274. Peaceful , friendly Site = Hide Away

The Hide Away was recommended by a friend and a very good recommendation it was !!! We live local so we were aware of any nearby locations , the site was excellent , peaceful and we were made very welcome by all staff onsite . this was our first camping experience so will defiantly be returning very soon . Dave , Debs Dog Sol

  275. A lovely spot

We stayed for two nights with our 15 month daughter and had a lovely stay. The staff were friendly and helpful and the shop was reasonably priced. The facilities were great, clean and to a high spec (just a shame the showers were timed and I kept having to press the button, not the end of the world but a little annoying nonetheless). We will definitely come back again!

  276. Fantastic Place

Beautiful location and staff are very friendly. Bathroom facilities look to be fairly new and kept clean by all who use them. Brilliant that they have a breakfast van on site for those who can’t be bothered to fire up for breakfast and a handy little shop for those forgotten essentials. Loved it all and will be going back for sure.

  277. Nice site

Lovely site, enjoyed the fire pits. Visit totally marred by the fact that I picked up the norovirus while there. We all noticed how strange it was that there was only one soap dispenser in the toilets, and that was out of the way and very difficult to use. Maybe that contributed. I certainly used it, but did everyone else?

  278. Another amazing weekend

Well my 4th visit this year, I think I maybe obsessed. Still time to fit in a few more. I’ve loved coming here since 2012 a few months after it first opened. It’s my go to campsite when i want somewhere close to home for a weekend. I’m a single camper, so yes its expensive as the price is £22 for a tent for 2 for 1 night over a weekend, but I’m happy to pay the cost. I could go to other sites, but I know I’ll be comparing and I think for what I get it’s good value. This is where I come for a bit of luxury. Some of my previous favourites sites, may have only had a toilet and a cold tap, some not even a toilet! Barney and his family have really made the Hideaway just that. I nice, clean, well planned and laid out site. Yes people complain that there is no washing machine or that the camp shop isn’t stocked with what they want, but its stocked with the basics that you need, plus the local cider! I can highly recommend ordering the breakfast pack from the camp food people. They deliver to your pitch as well. The toilet/shower areas are warm and generally clean, kids do like to hide out there as its warm so be prepared for bits of toilet paper scattered around, this is nothing against Barney, its just unfortunate that kids will be kids. There’s I think 5 showers, 2 private sink areas and 5 toilets in the Ladies. All with underfloor heating and a hair dryer. Plenty of mirrors to use as well. 3 sinks for washing and a separate sink, with soap for use after the loo along with a hand dryer. The entrace to the toilets alos holds all the tourist information along with local information on pubs, walks, maps etc, with a book shelf for people to swap. the disabled loo is separate and doubles as a wet room. The pot wash has 3 sinks, with stopper plugs, so no need to bring a bowl, drainers and usually someone has left some washing up liquid in there. There are 2 freezers and a fridge for essentials to go in and a few sockets for charging phones. Around the corner is the drying room. When its cold, wet or blowing a gale, this is where you will find people. It’s like walking into a sauna, sometimes my glasses steam up! Here you will find a baby change area and a sink for washing. plenty of racks and airers for drying clothes and towels. I belive there are quite a few EHU pitches, but I’ve never used them. I’ve had friends stay in the Bell tents and they loved them and said they were very comfy. If anyone is wanting to book, book early. My last two times camping here have been cancelations that I’ve managed to grab. I’m already looking at booking for 2017 when I get paid in September!

  279. Wonderful campsite

I would highly recommend this site to anybody looking for a relaxed, friendly and extremely well kept campsite. It is perfect for both couples and families or friends. The location is excellent for exploring the surrounding area on foot or bike, and there are plenty of attractions a short drive away. I would particularly recommend the bell tents if you are looking for something that little bit more special 🙂 The wash facilities are good quality and kept clean, and the drying room is very useful if the great British weather catches you out! My absolute favourite touch is that every pitch gets a fire pit, you can’t beat sitting round a camp fire with a nice drink after a busy day!

  280. Great few days away with the family

Enjoyed the trip away with the family regardless of some rainy weather. Fire pits and tripods are great fun and add to the experience. Lovely site, lovely staff, fab facilities

  281. Laid back family vibe in beautiful surroundings

We have recently returned from a two night camping trip to the Hideaway. We were attracted to it due to the large pitch sizes, fire pits, size of the site and its strict no noise policy, given we have two young children. It was a beautiful, peaceful location in the middle of the North Yorkshire countryside. Everyone appeared to be like minded and friendly and there was no trouble with noise at all. The facilities were superb, exceptionally clean to say the campsite was full, and not a spider in site – a huge bonus for me! We all absolutely loved the fresh coffee and pastries from the little vintage caravan which was a little bit of luxury each morning. Despite only having two nights we felt totally rested and relaxed when we came to leave and will definitely return as soon as we can.

  282. One or two small niggles – otherwise great

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Hideaway. The first half of our week was idyllic. During the second half our neighbouring tent was joined by other family members who set up a shelter where they sat chatting until very late – being very close to our tent, less than 2 metres it was very loud and at midnight very frustrating. Not the campsites fault, just one of those things. There were quite a few dogs, who ran freely without leads mainly in the mornings. This scared one of our daughters when they came bounding up. Otherwise all good, clean, friendly and well located. We particularly enjoyed having a camp fire in the evenings.

  283. Don’t delay, book to stay!

What a truely wonderful place….. Friendly, welcoming staff who are more than willing to aissit you to have a relaxing, stress free break. Beautiful, well kept site with plenty room to unwind and enjoy your time away. Facilities are spot on, clean and tidy with amazing showers. Plenty of pot washing facilities and fridges and freezers to store your tasty camping treats. I could go on…… get booked in at The hideaway and see for yourselves.

  284. Relaxing

We spent a lovely two nights at The Hideaway. Despite the rain we still enjoyed sitting by the fire and we all loved the relaxed feel and family feel if the site.!

  285. Lovely site with fab extras

The Hideaway is a lovely, quiet site that we will continue to return to again and again. The owners and staff are lovely, friendly and always approachable, the facilities are very well maintained and the addition of the caravan for proper coffees and pastries is a treat for any camper. The site is lovely and safe for children. They can run amok in the long grass and traffic is kept away from the camping area so no worries. The benefits of each of the tent pitches having it’s own fire pit is a rare and treasured thing. The ability to chill round a real fire at the end of the day is quite lovely.

  286. Perfect Campsite

The Hideaway is a peaceful campsite which manages to get all the most important things absolutely right. The showers are hot and plentiful and washrooms kept very clean. The pot wash room with fridge and freezers makes the chores much more convenient. The little shop has all the basics including excellent local cider, and logs for the firepits. Barney and the staff are fantastically helpful and friendly and go out of their way to ensure everything runs smoothly. This was our second visit with three generations of our family and I am sure it won’t be our last.

  287. First Camping Trip Ever – can’t wait to rebook!!!

Stayed here last week with my teenage daughter and our dog. It is the 1st time we have stayed at a campsite and it certainly won’t be the last thanks to Barney and his wonderful staff! Loved the quiet aspect of the site, the pitches were huge and the fire pits a fabulous idea as we enjoyed some lovely toasted marshmallows in the evenings. The shower and toilet facilities were second to none and kept immaculately clean as was all of the site. The surrounding area was lovely and the site seemed really secure which was an important fact as we were 2 females. We will definitely be returning as it was a delightful experience and comes highly recommended 🙂

  288. Fabulous

Me, hubby and our two girls camped her last week for a few days and i can’t rate this place highly enough! Fabulous place, faulous facilities and fabulous staff meant we had the best camping break ever. Will definitely be coming back!

  289. My Baxby Manor Camping Trip

This was our second visit and it is a very friendly site and very secluded. It is the only site I know of that has a fire pit so my family and I can sit round a camp fire at night. I would recommend this site to all my friends and family. Thanx Barney

  290. Fab weekend

Found this by chance on FB…3 families meeting , travelling from the Borders, Newcastle & Manchester….not bad accessibility for all…6 adults, 6 children. River was great fun for kids. Bought our own badminton as not huge lot of grass space for playing. Very chilled out weekend, so relaxing & amazing weather which helped. No problems encountered at all…it was just lovely! A definite recommend…

  291. 5* campsite

Chose this campsite as it seemed to offer everything we wanted – and it did. Excellent facilities, clean, well maintained, spacious pitch, friendly staff. Sure we’ll be back!

  292. Top site

We stayed for 4 days and loved every minute. Yorkshire is so beautiful and this site is ideally situated to visit the Dales, the moors and the coast (Bempton cliffs and the Hunmanley Gap are amazing). The site itself is beautiful, the facilities are very clean. One thing, dogs, there are we’re quite a few while we were there, not everyone had them under control and some barked until 11. But this was minor, the place is fantastic, we would highly recommend it.

  293. Lovely campsite

Wonderful site – it was exactly as I hoped it would be. Although not entirely full, it was busy enough but it didn’t feel cramped (unlike many larger sites). No caravans and no ‘entertainment’ which are positives to us but I know not to everyone. Toilet facilities etc were probably the nicest I’ve seen and were very clean. Pot washing facilities were luxurious! Really liked having the cars in a car park and not on the field. Would love to come back at some point.

  294. Lovely Interlude

I stayed with my husband for a mid week break during 2 days in July and we had a fab time. The facilities are second to none and everything has been considered to make your stay better. The shower and toilet facilities were spot on and very clean. Pitches are very big, and although we were in a camping pod, there was plenty of space between. Only thing I didn’t like was people walking directly past your pitch when you were sitting around fire, but not a massive issue and it wouldn’t put me off coming back.

  295. Back to Basics

We loved the fire pits and tripods to cook on, this was real camping. The facilities were clean and all the necessary things were thought of whilst still keeping things basic. Would have preferred the shop to have been open earlier and later. It was a pity that Liza-jane cafe van was not open at all during our stay. We will definitely be back.

  296. Third year in row.

Absolutely love this site. Beautiful and convenient location with excellent facilities. Very peaceful with no noise after 11. Can’t wait for next visit. Thanks to Barney and staff.

  297. Shame

Stayed two years ago & was idyllic this time was spoiled by owners of yapping barking dogs, that said the site is lovely but who brings unruly dogs camping? Shame really.

    • Hi David, I am sorry that the yapping dogs spoiled your break after you had had such an enjoyable time here a couple of years ago. Although this not something that occurs regularly if i had known about the issue at the time I would certainly have had a word with the dog owner(s).

  298. The best place EVER

We have stayed here 3 times so far, we never want to go home and can not wait to go back. The site itself is beautiful, it’s a great base for days out and a fantastic place to spend the day if you don’t want to go anywhere or do anything. It’s run by lovely people, very friendly and helpful. The showers and wash facilities are always clean and well looked after. We love the fact that we can have a fire every night. It really is our favourite place to go on holiday, very much looking forward to our next visit.

  299. Little bit of tranquility

We had a fantastic 5 days here in July. The minute you drove in you felt relaxed and at one with nature. The pitches were large so people weren’t crammed in and the fire pits were a unique bonus, even with us having a 2 year old, she loved that she was able to roam and enjoy the nature. It was great that the campsite was so quiet and everyone was really friendly. We would recommend here to other people and come and stay again. Hopefully for longer.

  300. Perfect campsite!

Big pitches; fire pits; beautiful location; well-stocked shop; very clean facilities; fridge and freezer; play park a ten minute walk away. Would thoroughly recommend.

  301. Perfect

Not a bad word to say – if you want a well run campsite where you will feel safe, can have a fire and a huge pitch and the children can be ‘free’ this is it. We stayed in wood this time for a treat which was very special. Locally produced cider in the shop.. a vintage caravan selling espresso based coffees of a morning .. Lovely. I wish I had read the website better and not skim read it as I missed out on the baker and village play area for the kids it we will be back.

  302. Peaceful

Very welcoming, accommodating & helpful staff. No noise after 11pm rule adhered to. Clean site with good facilities. We’ll go again. Well done Barney & his team

  303. Our maiden voyage in our California

Chose this site being near to home to try out the sleeping arrangements and get used to our new camper van. The site is quiet, peaceful with excellent toilets and showers in beautiful surroundings. Will definitely be back and recommend to visitors.

  304. Camping weekend 2016

Overall we was very satisfied with the site in all areas however when we arrived we was plot 9 11 & 12 but they would let us swap with 10 (they hadn’t arrived) so we was all together. So some of the people with us had to keep going back and forth though it only a short distance it still mattered.

    • Hi, thank you for the review. With regards moving pitches; as you know pitches are chosen by you the camper at the time of booking, T10 had already been chosen and booked by someone else when you booked your pitches so it was not possible to move on arrival as you requested. I don’t think T10 would have been too happy! 🙂

  305. Very Helpful

We stayed for 2 nights as we were visiting York. Owner was very helpful and even provided us with a camping stove as we had managed to leave ours on the dining room table at home.. Campsite was beautiful and toliets were clean and well appointed. Pot wash area was great with plenty of sinks for everyone, never had to queue… Love that we could have a campfire, as its the number one criteria for us when choosing a campsite.. Definitely looking forward to the adults only section of the campsite when it opens though..

  306. Cant wait to come back

I had an image of what I was looking for, for my two day retreat. I really needed a very special place with peace, quiet and nature. A place to think and be creative. I knew as soon as I arrived that this was absolutely perfect. Barney was really helpful and happy to take time to talk even though he was really busy. The grounds were kept beautifully and my pod was all I could have asked for and then some. I will be booking again for a short break with my partner and if we can get the right dates we will also take a break with my son. I have tweeted where I can and recommended to everyone. A brilliant place that I want to tell everyone about but keep to myself !

  307. Fantastic Hidden Away Camping Trip

I went with my partner, sister- and brother-in-law for a few days during the week just before the school holidays in July. The Hideaway at Baxby Manor is a fantastic campsite with friendly staff, a great spacious layout, and quiet peaceful atmosphere. The site has been well-thought out, incorporating built-in fire-pits, pitch numbers, corresponding parking numbers, and high-end facilities. Even wheel-barrows to help get your gear to the pitches. We booked standard non-electric tent pitches online – you can even choose your spot beforehand – so everything was easy. The campfires and rent-able BBQs are fantastic and we spent much of our evenings having fun by the fire. I guess the only downside was that we couldn’t get any coffee or breakfast at the Caravan Cafe, as it has limited open hours outside of holiday time.

  308. The best camp site I have ever stayed on.

Absolutely fantastic camp site. Wash block was fantastic, the plushest I have ever seen whilst camping for sure. Though the shop was small it was stocked with useful stuff and the idea of being able to hire a hanging BBQ to cook over the fire pit was just brilliant. As was the ability to have a camp fire at all. So many sites don’t seem to allow this and it is one of the biggest parts of camping for me. All in all would recommend wholeheartedly, we plan to come back next summer.

  309. We’ll be back!

LOVED the Hideaway. We stayed in an Eco Pod for 2 nights to have a relaxing break away from the everyday hecticness of life. The location is perfect, the surroundings are perfect, the facilities are perfect. There’s been a lot of love & effort put into this site and it shows. We will defiantly be back for more relaxing getaways 🙂

  310. Peace & Quiet

The Hideaway is fantastic! Been 3 years in a row now and hoping to come again. The pitches are perfect – a good size and well separated. No overcrowding and the hedges and long grass give more privacy than you’d usually get on a campsite. Facilities are good quality and very clean and the “coffee & cake van” is a bonus. But the best pit is the fire pits – just makes camping so much more fun! It’s a great place to come with friends or family and just sit around and chat and relax. Good walking country all around and the pub in the next village is also very good.

  311. 6 days in a lovely campsite

A really lovely campsite .. loved the fire pits and the availability of tripods to hire (」5 for week with 」20 returnable deposit). Nice little shop with all the necessities required. Very modern and clean toilet area and a drying room (although no washing machine .. so washing has to be done by hand but not a huge problem at all!) … my only, tiny, wee two quibbles … car parking is allocated and when we came to leave we could not use car doors as parking is a wee bit tight … I had to move the car onto the main access to be able to do this. The only other little thing is the bin area .. the bins are locked and the “slot” is simply not big enough even to take a carrier bag of rubbish … it would be helpful if tops were left unlocked .. first time on the many campsites I have visited that this has been a problem. But those two things are minor niggles … overall a great wee site .. and I will definitely return.

    • Hi Carol, thank you for your comments, it is always good to receive constructive feedback.
I thought I would respond to your comments although i realise they are only small niggles so that other can see firstly that I have acknowledged the points you have raised and secondly so that it may go someway to explaining what i am doing about it and why they are the way they are…if that makes sense?! Please don’t take this as me having a rant and being defensive, I have read many cringe-worthy responses to reviews! I hope this doesn’t come across as one of those! 🙂

The car parking is tight and that is due to a miscalculation by myself back in 2012 when i was sat on a mini-digger digging out the roads and parking areas! I do not want to expand the parking areas because that would detract from what The Hideaway is all about, we would become more of a rural car park rather than a green conservation-concious site. Increasing numbers of campers bringing more than one vehicle does add to the problem however.

The bins/waste issue is a continuous problem. Due to being a very rural site we do have problems disposing of (very costly) land-fill waste. I make sure all arrivals are informed that the bin lids do not open and to use carrier bags or smaller for their waste, if the bin lids are left open people treat the waste collection area as a tip and fill the bins with chairs, tables, beds, cookers etc and they can become full after just one day!
I am as I type just conversing with a company who supply reusable recycling bags, i hope to be able to supply each pitch with two bags so as to aid with recycling and reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill-my ultimate goal!

Thank you again Carol and I look forward to seeing you in the future.

      Barney (Proprietor)

  312. Five star campsite

Stayed here for four nights and didnt want to come home. The hideaway is the perfect campsite. Very clean and tidy and barney is very welcoming and helpful. I can easily say this is by far the best campsite i have stayed at. Looking forward to returning in the near future.

  313. Perfect escape

A wonderful site with first class facilities in glorious countryside. We didn’t have good weather but still had a brilliant time. I’d recommend here to anyone looking for great quality camping and glamping. No kids playgrounds or entrainment just the great outdoors! We’ll be back soon.

  314. First Impressions

At first you read other peoples reviews regarding any camp sites, this gives you some idea as to what you want from a campsite. As a family we found the Hideaway a first class campsite. Fellowcampers were enjoying themselves, having a few drinks around the open campfires.Children cooking their marshmallows in the open fire really enjoying themselves, as kid’s do. Come 11o’clock, (23.00hrs ) everything goes quite. You can turn in if you wish,or carry on talking , have a few more drink’s. During the day you may want to stay put on the campsite, you will be surprised how enjoyable this is just doing nothing. You may want to visit the National park site at the top of Sutton Bank, you may walk around the site and see the vista overlooking the Vale of York, or you may wish to hire bicylcles at the National park and see the site’s on two wheel’s.You are not far from York, Hemsley or Thirsk if you wish to see something different. There are no playground facilities on this site for the children, but this is what I like about this site as it make’s you as parents enjoy yourselves with the children. I made add that this site is Not a boisterous site. Please visit this site you will be pleasantly suprised.

  315. Chilled out camping

I would suggest a name change to the “perfect” hideaway, lovely chilled out peaceful site which allows campfires couldn’t ask for more. Washing facilities are the best I have seen. Well stocked shop that can even sell you a toothbrush. Free freezers for your ice blocks. Will definitely be coming back

  316. Great site

Visited with a group of friends. Barney really helpful when booking and suggested which pitches might be best for us to be together. Clear info re directions and site facilities. Lovely welcome on arrival. Great site with large pitches. Fire pit a great idea. Facilities clean and well maintained. A shame not all visitors adhering to the recycling system that they have put such an effort into. Would definitely recommend a visit.

  317. Lovely site

We had a weekend’s camping with 4 other families at the Hideaway. We all had a lovely time. The washing facilities were great, we appreciated the efforts made, including cloths for guests, to keep them clean. It was good to have access to fridge and freezers. It would have been useful to have extra pot wash facilities, the site was not full, so presumably the queues can get even longer. We loved having the grill to put over the fire – the bbq tasted great. Although the site is well tended and exciting to explore we did find that there was a lack of a clear grass area for playing ball games. Fair enough there is no children’s play area, but then it’d be good to be able to kick a ball around easily, or put up a badminton net. The long grass is pretty, but not great for anyone with hay fever (me!) at this time of year, and make sit trickier to play games.

  318. Another Great Stay!

We stayed at the Hideaway for a second time and it was even better than the first time around. The grass was neatly cut and the place looked amazing with all the greenery in full bloom. The toilets and showers were impeccably clean as usual. We sat under the stars with the fire pit until midnight….another fantastic night – thanks Barney!

  319. Baxby manor

Clean, family orientated park. Enjoyed paddling in stream ( careful of steep banks) and excellent local park 1/2 mile walk up Quiet lane . Glad cars parked away from tents so children could freely run about . Friendly staff and excellent facilities, wash up, showers, freezers .

  320. I can’t speak highly enough of this place

I’ve lost count now how many times we’ve returned here and we’ll be coming back some more. The owner (Barney) is lovely. All staff are lovely, the sites great, and quiet at night. Never had an issue ever with any other guests. It’s just a very pleasurable place to go to and I think everyone with a tent should go here at least once. If you are looking for a sprawling site that is on a main road, you can make loads of noise after 11 on and has a bar onsite, probably best give this a miss.. If you want to sit down and chat next to a real campfire and be in tranquil surroundings with children playing around you (unless you go to the sanctuary bit) and get away from it all (there is wifi if you must) then this is the place for you. We love it !

  321. Our camping trip

The hideaway- what a fabulous campsite. The entire feel and ethos of the site makes you feel relaxed before you’ve even got out of the car. The large pitches mean you are not on top of each other, the fact that each pitch has a firepit is just the best! The facilities are spotless, and are by far the best and nicest facilities I have ever used on a campsite! My only criticism is that they are always absolutely boiling – I don’t know if this is because they are linked to the drying room? Went to use the facilities a couple of times and nearly collapsed with the heat! Aside from that, a nice campsite attracts nice campers – everyone we came in to contact with was absolutely lovely! My other half was totally won over by the place and we may very well have our wedding blessing and reception here (finances dependant).

  322. Our visit

Great campsite, lovely clean and well maintained facilities. Great little caravan on site to provide cheeky coffees and cake. Lovely setting and calm feel. No children’s play areas on site but that was perfect – they made their own entertainment running around the field and in the adjoining wood/stream areas, nothing more was needed (although we did have a visit to the local park in Husthwaite which is also lovely with lots for the kids to play on. Will definitely be back!

  323. ‘We Love this Place’

Our second time at this camp site having stayed last year and absolutely loved it so delighted to return for a two night stay.. arriving on Sunday 12/06/16…just for a little bit of time away from the world…and to celebrate our 23rd Wedding Anniversary. The Hideaway @ Baxby deserves all the positive reviews it receives …we love this place .. : ) Lovely owners/staff ..all very friendly and helpful , thank you Barney for even finding us some BBQ Tongs to borrow …as we had forgotten ours 🙂 The Camp site was as lovely as we remembered it and extremely quiet due to dates and we had the whole field of our pitch area to ourselves. Stayed at T01 which was a lovely large pitch next to the beck and trees. Campfire as always was brilliant. Even the heavy rain on our first evening did not spoil our time their, possibly eased by the lovely local cider and the fact we had managed to get our tent up before the rain set in. Excellent and Superb Toilet and Shower facilities- and lovely other extras like the Pot Room with fridges and freezers and charger point for customers to use and the handy Drying Room (came in very handy this stay given the rain). Beautiful idyllic setting ….and always a wrench when time to leave…..but this means we can then look forward to returning again. Absolutely recommend this to others …especially if like us you are looking for some time away from the big wide world with the balance of a nature, within a beautifully nurtured setting, that has the most fab toilets/showers.

  324. Relaxing hideaway

Very nice site tucked away from the world, with well managed facilities in lovely surroundings. I had my field to myself and all facilities worked well. Staff were very helpful finding me an essential tool for my Campervan. My only complaint is the taps, a very short rush of water needing a really hard push, difficult to manage the wash hand basins and a nice shower. All else really nice, beautiful and I love the fire pits.

  325. Quiet at night

Had a lovely time at Baxby Hideaway. Really relaxing and lovely surroundings. We were expecting it to be noisy at night as our pitch was in the middle of about 6 tents all from the same party but , like magic, they all quietned down by 11. Also noted that it was windy but the site seemed pretty sheltered from it so no hassle putting tent up. One thing I found a bit difficult was getting to our pitch without walking through lots of other pitches (in the field next to the entrance). Perhaps a few paths mowed through the middle section could help?

  326. Boutique camping at its best

Really enjoyed our stay at the Hideaway, utterly heartbroken we had to leave. Thoroughly recommend the eco-pods: very good value for money, incredibly comfortable mattress, and loved being able to sit outside under the stars toasting marshmellows over our fire-pit. Two nights were not enough.

  327. One of best

Very high camping standard demonstrated with very clean facilities similar to German Scandinavian campsites Much better than alternatives which are just a big field with basic facilities.

  328. Fantastic campsite

The Hideaway has everything you want from a campsite. Particularly like the availability of firepits on every camping pitch and the ability to hire tripods for cooking.

  329. Fabulous family site

A fabulous site which is perfect for families. We could not fault a thing. We are looking at dates for our next visit. Would highly recommend this site.

  330. Fabulous stay

Really great stay surrounded by nature. Just a couple of minor suggestions – would be helpful to have more soap dispensers in the toilets. Also the car parking space was very difficult to get into and out of – although our car is an estate, that was equivalent to most cars there carrying camping equipment. Beautiful site with plenty of opportunities to see and hear birds and other wildlife.

  331. Loved this site!

My daughter and I had one night here in June. We are novice campers but it couldn’t have been better. Clean site, good sized tent pitch and an all important fire pit and logs to buy. Washing facilities clean and v modern. Fridges and freezers a bonus for storing food and drink. Beautiful countryside and great weather really made the trip. Coffee and breakfast from Liza Jane’s caravan was welcome, but get there early before all the pastries go! One night was too short, 2 needed but it was booked up.

  332. Birthday treat

We have just come back from a short break at the hideaway campsite, for my birthday! The sun was shining and we got a warm welcome from Barney. We were amazed at the size of the plot we had and the fire pit I’d amazing at night! Everyone is really friendly and only 20 mins drive from York. The facilities were lovely and cleaned regularly. There is a little shop to get a few bits and a lady who serves hot drinks and pastries in the morning. Sausage rolls are delicious! We will definitely be returning and the eco pods and bell tents look really nice too! Thank you for a lovely birthday!

  333. It’s just amazing!

We love this place. We have stayed for two years in a row with three other families. It’s our annual camping weekend get away. Barney and the other team members are so friendly and helpful. The facilities are brilliant plus there is a huge focus on eco-friendliness which we like. Definitely returning again!

  334. A hidden treasure

This campsite is perfect. Plenty of space on pitches and for kids to run around. Staff really helpful and friendly. Gorgeous setting and facilities. Unspoilt and green.

  335. Spring bank camp

As usual our annual camp was amazing . The last 2 years have been spent here. Open fire pit is always a plus point as not so many sites allow this these days. The people who use this site are obviously wanting the same thing from a site as everyone else, clean , respectable, children under control and not rowdy. Everyone observes the no noise rule after 11pm. Fantastic to find a site like this and I hope it stays this way.

  336. Fantastic campsite

This is our third time to Baxby. The things that draw us back are the cleanliness of the bathroom facilities and the friendliness and helpfulness of the owners. The site is very well organised and people mostly stick to the rules.

  337. Hobbit home

Lovely clean and modern facilities. The family pod we stayed in was like a hobbit home; so cute and cosy. The fire pit was a fab addition and the whole location was gorgeous.

  338. Wonderful site, another fantastic visit!

We stayed for two nights in June 2016, and had a wonderful stay – the campsite was busy as it was half term (we hadn’t realised when we booked, and as we don’t have children we were worried about the noise… We needn’t have been concerned, as the tents/pods are all far enough away from each other so as to be very peaceful!), but facilities were plentiful and spotlessly clean. The Eco pod was perfect for the two of us, and we had a fantastic stay – Barney was very welcoming, and there was an unexpected bonus of there being a little caravan onsite making delicious coffees to buy in the mornings! We will be back.

  339. Best Campsite we have ever found!!

What an incredible place! Beautiful, peaceful location, fantastic shower block and a well stocked shop. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and everything you need has been thought of. By far the best site we have ever stayed at. Caters for families and couples, tents, pods, tourers and glamping – all working in harmony in a well designed space. Lots of privacy but lots of open shared space for the kids to play too. The icing on the cake was the fire pits!! Toasting marshmallows and cooking tea over an open fire – brilliant! Perfect, perfect place that we can’t wait to visit again :o)

  340. A Real Hideaway!

A real hideaway. Off the beaten track, quiet and tranquil, except for the other campers of course. Each pitch has its own fire pit so can get smokey when all of them are alight. The pitches were nicely spaced apart allowing a good area for the kids to play.

  341. Amazing weekend with friends & family

We arrange with the lovely Barney to hire one whole field including the Pods to celebrate my husbands 40th with around 30 friends and family. The group included lots of young children so the site (including the no noise after 11rule) was perfect for us. Everything about our trip to The Hideaway was fantastic. Barney answered all my questions over the weeks before and went out of his way to help make our stay as easy as possible, the site is stunning, the pods brilliant for the slightly less hardy in the group and the bathroom and wash up facilities even converted all of our none campers. We had an amazing time and are already planning next year.

  342. Excellent camp site

This was a very tidy and well presented site. The toilet and shower facility’s were excellent. The only down side was we struggled with directions on one of the suggested tour as the instructions were not very clear or out of date.

  343. Returning to Camp site of choice

I cannot praise this little hidden away campsite enough. I cannot fault it in any way. Once you have been once I’m sure you will be back again.

  344. Lovely friendly place

This was our second time visiting the Hideaway and we will definitely be returning. it is in a lovely location with plenty of walks. Very peaceful and friendly staff. Shower and toilet block is the best I have seen on a camp-site and are kept very clean.

  345. Great place

One of the best campsites I’ve visited – lovely flat spacious tent pitches, friendly staff, great facilities and quiet – not disturbed by rowdy groups as it’s just not that sort of place. It was all lovely families with young children when we stayed there.

  346. Virgin campers

Novice campers and I was personally apprehensive about the whole thing however, The Hideaway was recommended by a friend and we wouldn’t hesitate to come back again! The facilities were spotless and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly! They made our first ever camping holiday the best it could’ve been! Between our two parties we had two toddlers who loved the space and freedom that the site provided.

  347. Nicest Campground we stayed at in the UK & Ireland

This was the nicest campground we stayed at out of about 8 other trip advisor recommended campgrounds in the UK/Ireland. Loved that the Washrooms and facilities were heated and clean. Good spacing between sites. Loved being close to the river and waking up to the sound of sheep. If I get the chance to go through the area again, I would definitely look into booking another night or two.

  348. Great Service

The facilities are exceptional, if you love a good camp fire to cook over, this is the place for you. Barney’s service skills are cheerful, cheeky & make for a pleasant experience overall. Great campsite, already been back once, will be back again soon.

  349. Great campsite

Lovely modern campsite – great quality facilities, very friendly staff, large pitches with the added bonus of a fire pit for a real camping experience.

  350. Spring Outing

First trip in the old ‘VDUB’ to this site. Excellent facilities and helpful staff in very pleasant surroundings. Will be returning in the best future.

  351. First time visit

My partner and myself booked at short notice in a bell tent. The tent was well laid out, tidy and clean. The wash facilities are brilliant. Everything about this place made us want to go back and we have already recommended to plenty more of our friends. You will not be dissapointed at the hideaway.

  352. Brilliant Site

Brilliant site! I would love to give a bad review to keep this site to ourselves, however as Barney runs such a clean and tidy site with A1 facilities and the most level pitches anywhere, it is impossible to do so. I highly recommend The Hideaway at Baxby to anyone. Quiet, spotless and heated facilities with a very good pot wash and drying/ laundry plus fridges an freezers and shop. Just go it’s fantastic and don’t forget to take in the night sky stunning.

  353. Excellent Site for the Family

Visiting a campsite for the first time is always a bit of a nerve wracking experience for me. I’m not a dyed-in-the-wool hardcore camper and I like a certain level of comfort with the sites I book. I spend a considerable amount of time researching campsites and I’m never quite sure if I should trust the reviews (for fear that the overly-effusive ones have been hand-picked and the more truthful ones chucked out) and cleverly-angled photographs can make a fairly mundane site look like a luxury getaway. I’d searched Google for luxury sites in North Yorkshire and The Hideaway was one of the top results. I was impressed with the website; the reviews were all positive, the facilities looked great (especially the ‘hotel-standard washrooms’) but the REAL clincher was the mention of fire pits. Who doesn’t love a fire pit?! I made the booking via the website with ease and received email confirmation shortly afterwards. I was provided with all the info I needed ahead of the visit including the extremely specific directions which helped us find the site first time with minimum panic. We made it down the windy, bumpy track to the site and was greeted by a very nice lady (sorry, I’m terrible with names) who informed us that the pitch that we’d booked was unfortunately waterlogged. This wasn’t their fault, that’s what you get for going camping at the end of March! She was extremely helpful in finding us somewhere else to put the tent and sorted us out with an extension lead for our powered pitch. Once the tent was up we made ourselves comfortable and paid a visit to the small shop to stock up on firewood, teabags (which I’d forgotten) and most importantly, a few bottles of the delicious locally produced cider. The facilities lived up to the hype from the website. The washrooms are immaculate and are fitted out to a very high standard. The Pot Wash is a good size and has fridges available for your perishables. There’s also a good size drying room and baby change should you need them. The site is nice and quiet and we felt completely safe letting the kids explore on their own. Although there aren’t any play areas on site (other than the rope swing that my oldest discovered on the second day and spent the majority of the rest of the stay on) there is a very well good park right opposite the site entrance with loads to keep them occupied. We made good use of Liza-Jane’s caravan which opens on Saturday and Sunday morning and serves up a range of delicious food and beverages. The sausage and chutney rolls are particularly good and the coffee is top quality : ) On our last night we treated ourselves to flame-grilled burgers and sausages using a tripod and grill hired from the shop (washed down with a bit more local cider) and relaxed as we watched the sun go down sat around the firepit. We absolutely loved our first trip to The Hideaway and will definitely be back.

  354. Best campsite I’ve ever been to

Fifth time we have visited Baxby Manor. It’s amazing. Staff are ever so welcoming and friendly. Barny is the loveliest guy. The shop is excellent and the facilities are like what you would get in a top notch hotel! We will be back again and again and again 🙂 absolutely love it

  355. Quiet, well placed for local attractions…

Second visit to The Hideaway and we are already planning a return trip during the summer 🙂 On both occasions we’ve been when it’s quiet so I can’t say what it’s like when full. Nice an clean, surrounded by trees, nice babbing stream, clean and tidy showers. BBQ tripods are supers as are the fire pits. Shop is well stocked as well. Barney is a great proprietor: friendly, helpful accommodating and quite a peaceful guy. Finally, Liza Jane and her beautiful vintage caravan sells superb pastries and the best mocha I’ve had for a while; very friendly as well. Yup, I’d recommend The Hideaway. Cheers.

  356. Excellent facilities and quiet site

We were very impressed by the standard of the facilities and how well kept the site is. We had a relaxing time and look forward to returning.

  357. Lovely little hide away

Great little camp site. Beck flowing through so keep kids entertained. Fire pits & tripod stands available which you can cook your burgers on. Facilities very clean. Local butcher delivery on a Saturday & fresh coffee & pastries for sale. Perfect stay & will defo be going back!

  358. Our kind of site!
Friendly staff, pitches not all scrunched together, campfire on each pitch, clean and WARM toilets.
    Will definitely be coming again.

  359. A Hobbit Pod Adventure

Fabulous from start to finish. The children loved staying in the pod. We had everything we needed. Barney was lovely and so were the other people manning the reception on the 2nd night. Extremely clean and beautiful wash facilities. 30 mins to York and a lovely nearby village with independant wine shops takeaways and convenience stores. Will be back. X

  360. Great campfire facilities

the site is set up so every pitch gets its own fire pit, thoughtfully located a safe distance from your tent or tourer, and wood is readily available from the office at 6 quid a sack. So if you are looking for a campfire experience it’s great. The toilet and wash facilities are in a new and nicely designed central amenities block which is very clean and warm. The camp is also convenient if you are going to visit York, as it’s an easy run to the York park n ride when you head off down the main road which is a few minutes drive from the camp. If I’m looking for another few days away in the area I’ll definitely be heading back to Baxby manor.

  361. Perfect campsite?

This was a chance find based on location for a one night stop-off. Note left on door for us for our late arrival. Met by Barney who helped us find our pitch. Lots of stars to enjoy next to our big fire in the fire pit. Good night’s sleep and hot shower in the amenity block that was more like a hotel bathroom than a campsite shower block. Shop for necessities. Faultless really. Would definitely recommend. Perfect campsite then? We thought so.

  362. A great trip!

We really enjoyed our stay at The Hideaway. The site is immaculate and we loved the environmental care which the owners have taken. We also really enjoyed having our own fire pit and because each pitch had one it meant that all of the pitches were nicely spaced out. The overall layout of the site also meant that although it’s not huge it felt as if there were lots of nooks to pitch for a bit more privacy. The new wash block with continually heated facilities was more hotel rather than campsite – all very clean tidy & cosy! We stayed in the family pod. The only thing where I would suggest an improvement is that a low rail, just a couple of inches high, be attached to the side of both of the single beds. As the mattress covers are plastic and then with a sleeping bag on top unfortuately our son slid out of bed on several occassions during the night and we were concerned that our daughter in the high bunk would do the same. Otherwise a great site and very comfy beds 🙂

  363. Been 6 times and will definitely be returning.

We found this campsite after searching the Web for campsites which allow fires. I have two boys aged 10 and 8 who think the idea of having a campfire and cooking on it is fantastic,( tripods can be hired from reception for £5). The campsite does not have any kids play areas but that never stopped kids having fun as there is surrounding woodland, a beck and plenty of grassed area for them to play in. There are nice clean showers with plenty of hot water and free to use unlike some campsites which charge for their use, clean toilets, a pot wash room, a drying room and the use of fridges and freezers included in the price. Also a shop, although very small, stocks most necessary items eg milk, bread, fire lighters, matches etc incase you’ve forgot to bring these with you, not to mention a selection of drinks and sweets for the children. Bags of logs are also available to buy for Ģ6 but I normally take my own. There is a strict noise rule for silence after 11pm but this has never stopped us or many of the other campers staying up till early hours of the morning sitting around the fire, just a bit of common sense required !! The site is owned by a guy called Barney who always gives a warm welcome. We’ve now visited this site 6 times and will definitely be returning, everything from location, cleanliness and layout of the pitches gets 5***** from us. The Lawton Family, Durham.

  364. It rained and we were pleased as that meant more cosy time in the bell tent!

Very pleased with it – made for a very special 2nd wedding anniversary surprise! Thank you.

  365. cycle camping

Very good reception for us as cyclists. We appreciated the free bag of logs. and the fire places with each pitch. We did think that £22 for two people and a small tent with no car a bit excessive. However the facilities were very good and I know if had been raining we would really been glad to use the wonderful drying room. It would be good if the site as well as offering logs for a fire also offered kindling to get the fire going. This would avoid the temptation of searching for twigs etc among the trees as we witnessed happening when we stayed.

  366. Brilliant camp site

Stayed for one night and very impressed the site is informal, campfires encouraged and friendly layout plus five star facilities, the showers and bathrooms were top quality and clean at all times, drying room great Great camp site one of the best, we had a great time

  367. Glamping

Fantastic place to stay, have already recommended to many friends. Facilities were one of the best where I’ve stayed. Plenty to do in the surrounding areas. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars for the wash facilities was because some campers/glampers walked through into the showers in muddy boots ignoring the request to either remove shoes or use the shoe covers and the fact that some would leave food in the kitchen sink after washing their pots – but this is not a reflection on the owners.

  368. First year at BaxbyFest

What a weekend, been going to The Hideaway for last 3 years but never to BaxbyFest, this needed to change so we booked in Oct 2014 for the event (second weekend in Sept 2015! What a great idea that was, with the retro caravan offering coffees, cake and delicious hot sandwiches on both Friday and Saturday. On Sat night the festival kicked in sitting around on hay bales listening to great artists playing late into the night on a beautiful clear evening under the stars with the campfires burning. What a great weekend of making happy memories with friends. Highly recommend the campsite and a visit to the BaxbyFest!

  369. Nice campsite and good value

The location of the bell tents meant that our children could not easily mix with other children. If we return to this site we would choose one of the other camping options located in the larger fields. The bathroom floor was very wet / muddy at times, but this was due to other campers not using the shoe covers provided. Overall a lovely stay though.

  370. Excellent campsite

We stayed in a bell tent, the campsite had excellent facilities and the cleanest washrooms we have ever seen on a campsite. The coffee caravan was a nice touch and we enjoyed croissants and hot drinks for breakfast. Very friendly and helpful staff and the 11pm lights out rule is great for families.

  371. fantastic facilities

Without doubt the ideology of being self sufficient whilst maintaining very high standards of facility was the best we have come across. It just shows that you can be environmentally aware, eco friendly and good value! We will definitely be rebooking this campsite again!

  372. Information regarding local area

It would have been helpful if leaflets were available with maps of the local area showing available walks. Luckily we bumped into some ‘locals’ who helped us out. However I do appreciate that the camp seemed to be used mainly by families with young children who probably aren’t interested in long walks! This is constructive criticism rather than a complaint! We loved the site.

  373. Perfect stay at the Hideaway

Absolutely perfect site, our first glamping trip was great , despite the weather! Bell tents are great if you’re not someone with your own camping gear. Toilets/wash block really superb and the vintage breakfast caravan really did add a touch of luxury. Hopeful be back soon!

  374. fantastic

the hideaway won`t be much of a hideaway for much longer (worse luck) the facilities and staff are great, you get an on site caravan converted into a lovely little snack van offering teas and coffees and some tasty little snacks, they also have a local butcher turning up on saturday mornings at around 10am for anyone that feels like a lazy day chilling out, and his meat is fantastic. this site is getting more popular i don`t think there was a pitch spare by friday night (luckily enough we turned up on wednesday) so book early. the staff and fellow campers are really friendly and its a credit to barney and holly we can`t wait to return !!!!!!!!

  375. Rural retreat

Everything set up and thought of for tent camping ! Large pitches with safe well designed fire pit . Able to choose pitch when booking was a bonus. Facilities kept extremely clean . Brilliant to have free access to fridge and freezer. Peaceful and quiet at night – lovely atmosphere .

  376. Excellent site

Plenty of space on the site so we didn’t feel cramped. Clean facilities in very good condition – showers better than the one I have at home! Fire pits for each site, and plenty of logs available. Friendly helpful staff and a lovely little site shop, plus a “cafe caravan” every morning with choice of yummy hot drinks and scummy food, and the local butcher van on Saturday morning – excellent! Surrounded by beautiful countryside – a lovely part of the country to visit. Would definitely recommend to others and we will definitely be returning next summer!!

  377. Amazing

I had never been camping before this summer and went twice in a month and a half! We love it so much. First time as a couple for our wedding anniversary and it was very romantic and secluded And a taxi ride from a Michelin starred pub that was just phenomenal but not in a snooty way (black swan oldstead) so we really did glamp it up! Went back with four small children so although a totally different experience it was probably even more magical. In the river with sodden wellies, marshmallows and sausages over the fire pit and the most amazing starry sky I’ve ever seen. It was like the kind of childhood holiday books are based on. (I have of course removed the reality of the kids being totally annoying At times!!) The fact that the site is so understated is lovely. It’s really clean and really efficient and really cool but it’s just a very relaxed place to be and the atmosphere is catching! We are now camping champions and will definitely we going back next summer.

  378. nice and peaceful campsite

Another enjoyable stay at the hideaway.Been to this campsite now four times and we would not stay anywhere else. Open campfires on a night and we can take the dog.Barney the owner is the most friendly person you could meet and so helpful. Cant wait for our next visit.Facities would not look out of place in a 4 * hotel. We stayed for 4 nights from 31st aug to 4th sept 2015 on pitch TE6 right next to facilities.

  379. Our second stay at the Hideaway

We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the respect towards nature ie nature allowed to develop and not trimmed to within an inch of its life. Of course the highlight for us must be the fire pits and cooking your own food over an open fire is a must.

  380. Great Campsite!!!

This is a really great campsite, equipped with all you’ll need for a relaxing stay. Fantastic facilities, friendly staff, and spacious pitches. Being able to have a fire is also an added bonus. Would definitely recommend.

  381. Scouting for Girls

Cooking over an open fire, with tawny owls calling from the surrounding trees, and the excited chatter of young children enjoying the freedom of a secure and highly explorable site . Fabulous Family friendly site , with modern washrooms and a brilliant drying room for towels or clothes , allowing you the luxury of staying out all day to enjoy the stunning local moors & woods with the confidence that damp boots/coats will be ready for use again by morning ! Plug points for charging phones & hair straighteners will please fussy teenagers, so they can enjoy the delights of toasting marshmallows over a campfire they helped make , whilst still looking cool 🙂 Book in now !

  382. A beautiful hideaway!

The Hideaway is a delight to stay at, with a chilled out feel, with lovely features like fire pits on each pitch and a breakfast caravan. The facilities in the shower block were perfect, and some of the cleanest I have ever seen! Pitches were all very flat, and it was in a lovely secluded spot. The stream provided a lot of entertainment for the kids we went with, and the grownups enjoyed the fires, coffee from the caravan, and local cider from the campsite shop!

  383. Excellent camping

We had a fantastic time at The Hideaway. We have three children and they said its the ‘best camp’ site they have ever stopped at. Although there was no ‘play area’ for them to use, the grassed area was used for cricket, rounders etc,. by other camping groups which made for new friendships to be made. The toilet and showering facilities were fantastic. Kids loved having an open fire which we used for cooking and having toasted marshmallows on. Would definitely return.

  384. A fabulous retreat

We wanted a campsite where we could have a campfire with and a back to nature attitude. The noise policy was adhered to which led to a lovely atmosphere of people sitting round their campfires taking in the peace and quiet. During the day the kids could play in the open spaces around the widely spaced pitches resulting in some great holiday friendships being created. Loads to do in the surrounding area (we didn’t get to the end of our list). Yes – you can hear the A19 but only just Yes – you do have to take your shoes off or wear overshoes in the toilets – this meant they were rarely dirty Yes – the 3 rules were posted on every cubicle – this meant my 8 year old was soon obeying to the letter.

  385. The campsite was in such a lovely location, it was fairly busy when we visited but still so peaceful due to the different area to camp. Facilities were excellent including the on site shop, probably the best we have visited. Drying room is also an added bonus as towels dried so quickly. The fridges are great and are well used by campers. The vintage caravan was fab especially the pastries mmmmm. We will definitely be back!!

  386. Family Stopover

To fulfil my sons Viking passions we decided on a few days in York, Im not a huge fan of camping but but finding somewhere for a family of five to stay was so cripplingly expensive camping was the sensible choice. I’m so pleased we did, and that we followed the excellent reviews and went for The Hideaway, we were in a tent and found the campsite the perfect balance of wild camping, fire pit, quiet after 11pm, streams for kids to explore (they even saw an owl close up), and modern day essentials- lots of hot water for showers (which were super clean) and the wash up facilities (also beautifully clean). Shared fridge and freezer for perishable food and a plug to charge your phone while you wash up are thoughtful touches. Kids 13yrs, 11yrs, & 8yrs enjoyed everything from exploring the site to buying sweets from the little camp shop. This site was perfect; simple, clean, full without being overcrowded and managing to feel very remote although actually very close to York. Finally must include compliments to Barney who manages to be both friendly and reserved and really works hard to make sure the site is the perfect hideaway.

  387. Lovely peaceful place to stay

The directions give the impression that it’s difficult to get to which filled me with trepidation. However, coming from the country myself, it was pretty easy to find and the road isn’t bad at all. Barney was very pleasant to deal with on arrival and the electric pitches are massive. Where most campsites might squeeze 10 or so vans in, there were only three in our corner. The facilities for washing and toileting were superb, by far the most superior I’ve come across, and the kitchen and drying rooms were great too. There’s a lending library and lots of local info about attractions nearby. The site is clean, quiet and a great place to stay with a family. Will definitely be going back. York is easy to get to by the way – take the park and ride in, it only cost £5.60 return for two adults and two kids and it takes you right to the heart of the city. Well done Barney – you have a site to be proud of.

  388. peaceful and relaxing

Very peaceful and relaxing, great facilities with extra lovely touches, such as café for cake and coffee, well stocked shop and fantastic meat from a local butcher which was cooked on a fire pit! Kids family, friends and dogs loved it.

  389. lovely family campsite

Enjoyed our time here. Perfect for families, small and quiet. Really liked the peaceful surroundings and nice for children to make their own games etc not rely on playground etc. Loved caravan for coffee/pastries and butcher visit. Drying room and fridges were appreciated. Loved firepits and the fact all pitches had them. Our pitch was very spacious and felt private with small wild area dividing. Hot powerful showers too. Only downside you need more bins as got very full before collection day. Also shame some guests don’t follow no muddy shoes in toilets. We’ll definitely be back and will be recommending. 🙂

  390. Gorgeous unspoilt site

Very satisfied with our camping experience at the hideaway. Our pitch – T01 was perfect and we’ll definitely be requesting this pitch again. Thankyou for an excellent camping trip!

  391. Fabulous

Had a great week camping with Barney – weather great, even though arrived in a downpour, wanting a wee and driving down a long bumpy road – great signs by the way – funny! Facilities second to none, very very very !!!!! clean and well maintained & great that everyone obides by the rules with the shoe protectors. Love the fact that you accommodate people who need to charge phones whilst washing up and who don’t have electric hook up. Very friendly staff and great cider on sale in the shop. Love the fact that cars not allowed on site and having to park in “car parks” as makes it much easier to entertain young children without the threat of cars moving about. Fab campsite, great location , excellent facilities – even the teenagers want to come back again next year!!!!!! Hopefully there will be space next year !!!! Thanks again Barney, hopefully see you again very soon xx

  392. Smashing, natural campsite

We stayed here because we were seeking a natural, quiet campsite. It was not overcrowded, but had enough other tents for the children to find friends. It felt safe as the cars were not allowed on the grass. Also the central area where there were no tents was perfect for the children. There is no children’s play area which is great as they made their own fun. Its always lovely to have a fire when camping. It’s a shame we could not access the beck a little easier and it would have been great to know the wooded bit where we were was fenced off to protect nature. None of this detracted from our enjoyment. It was beautiful and affordable. I would highly recommend it to friends.

  393. Great camping facilities

We only stayed for 2 nights but we’re very impressed with the location and the facilities. The toilets and showers were very clean which made a great difference to our time. We would definitely recommend this place to friends. It was great that there was no noise after 11 pm which all respected. Will definitely return.

  394. Lovely campsite in a great location!!

Stayed at the hideaway for a weekend with my wife, got to say this campsite is fantastic from the layout of the pitches to the beautiful facilities.the showers and the toilets are the best I’ve seen on a campsite. Then there’s the lovely touch of every pitch having a fire pit which just adds to the camping experience, there’s an onsite shop where you can get your basics from and fire logs plus homemade cider which defiantly is worth a try. In the mornings there’s a real cool vintage van which does hot drinks and pastries. This place is a real cool chilled out place to camp,we will be defintly be camping here again hopefully very soon.

  395. Hidden away at The Hideaway!

We all loved our stay at The Hideaway – 2 adults, 2 young children – the toilet/shower/washing up facilities are excellent and the few rules (eg. covering/removing outdoor shoes for toilets/showers) were fair, easy to follow and well respected by all… allowing for more time to relax by the fire! The dedicated fire pits was one of the main reasons we booked but the communal fridge and freezer were a great bonus. Being a typical UK camping experience it rained 4 out of 5 days but the drying room meant that was stress free too 🙂 The little shop was crammed full of extra goodies and essentials. Overall a brilliant, well thought out and well maintained site, and with family fairly near by we will hopefully be back again soon! Ooo… and the gorgeous little caravan serving coffee and pastries was very yummy!

  396. 1st Daddy-Daughter Camping Trip

We chose Baxby Manor from the cool camping website.
The location was spot on and afforded us easy access to some local trips out. The firepits are an awesome idea and I cooked on the tripod over the fire for the 1st time. Coffee from the little van was good and the little shop, although little was ample for our needs. We had a good trip up to Sutton Bank for some cycling (and where they very helpfully fixed my broken chain whilst we had an icecream) and a cycle over to Bylands Abbey and back including a trip to the tea rooms opposite which were excellent. We also visited the Mouseman place at Kilburn and had an ok lunch at the pub in Coxwold. The white horse as to be expected was far better from a distance than up close. Great camp site, I don’t normally like going back to places but think we might try a pod with the rest of the family.

  397. friendly quiet quant little place

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here, the place is definitely what camping is all about. The no noise after 11 was adhered to by all which is great for families. The grill tripods for hire was great for cooking, the staff are super friendly. The layout is great we had the extra large spot which was more than enough for us. It felt like we were a million miles from the hustle and bustle of daily life. They have fridges etc to store food too which was a bonus for large families. I wish I lived closer to enjoy this more often. Great wee gem of a place.

  398. Lovely, clean site, good facilities but too busy for us

This was a family site, it was quiet after 11 and had good facilities, but for me, it was just too busy, with too many families for my personal preference on one site. To add to that was the closure of the only local pub. I think lots of people would enjoy the site – especially if they intend staying there most of the time, but it wasn’t for us. The site was well maintained, clean, safe etc, just too busy while also being too remote from any walkable things to do.

  399. A league above the rest

The Hideaway is a beautiful campsite which brings back memories of youth with the little plumes of smoke from the cracking campfires and the babbling brook in the background. Facilities are fantastic – the showers and washrooms far ahead in terms of quality than the majority of other sites. Barney, the campsite owner, is also very friendly and helpful and has created a truly lovely camping experience. We rated the site so highly that we booked the entire place for our wedding a year ago!

  400. Happy Campers

What made it was that all the campers in our vicinity were friendly and well mannered. The kids of all ages were good kids who did as they were told and played nicely with our two who are certainly not angels. The weather too made it and the shop and everything worked well. Camping should be simple, where adults can relax whilst the kids enjoy themselves.

  401. It was great ‘out of season’ – we loved it!

We had an excellent stay, and loved the site, which was quiet, very clean, with basic but just the right level of shop provisions etc. It wasn’t at all busy, as we were there during the week, but saw it getting busier on the Saturday that we left. In some areas there is not much space for kids to run about, as there is long grass between the pitches, so be aware of this. We loved the ethics of sustainability, nature conservation, and the open fire pits. It is a great site fro traditional camping.

  402. Fantastic stay as always

This is the second time we’ve stayed at this site. We brought with us some friends that have never camped before and they loved the site too. I simply cannot recommend this site enough!!! Excellent!!

  403. A little piece of heaven in Yorkshire

Second visit and felt relaxed from almost the moment we arrived. Tucked away in the countryside, all that can be heard is the babbling brook and birds singing. Loved the clean showers, drying room (very useful with the British weather), fridge and freezer for use and friendly owner. Also really enjoyed sitting round the campfire in the evening. Thank you we will definitely return.

  404. Just what we needed!

Baxby Manor impressed from the outset. The location is lovely – good accessible walks from the site and gorgeous villages with friendly (for dogs and children too) pubs. Barney and his staff are friendly and helpful; nothing was too much bother and the site feels safe. The highlight has to be the fire pits in the generous pitches. Plentiful wood at a reasonable cost. We were with two teenage girls who enjoyed the surrounds including a rope swing. We had a truly relaxing time with friends and we will definitely be back.

  405. The Hideaway – a little piece of heaven

I’ve stayed here on quite a few occasions – the first time when my husband and I were looking for a two-night stay in a bell tent. This first stay was wonderful, especially having our own fire-pit, and ensured that The Hideaway would be a favourite for years to come. We have since camped there in our own tent a number of times and loved every trip. My latest stay was introducing a group of friends to The Hideaway for a one-night stay in two adjacent tents. We had a fantastic time and, though we were a group of 11 girls having a good drink and a laugh in the sunshine, followed by camp-fire fun, the pitches are generous enough to ensure we were not disturbing others. Barney has thought of everything to ensure The Hideaway is a total gem!!

  406. Great first night’s camping on a cycle touring week.

A great location, and lovely camp site. Reading my book, drinking the local cider (made in the village) by the fire pit after a meal of Seabass and a couple of pints in the pub in the next village (nice, very reasonably priced food, and good Helmsley brewed Stormin’ the Ridin’ Pale Ale) was a great start to my tour. Excellent shower block and good little shop on site for bits and pieces – and the local cider. I will be returning with my partner and friends in the near future.

  407. First time testing a new tent with a family just learning how to camp well.

Exceptional facilities – spotless and well managed through clear, helpful and friendly signage. Very friendly and helpful proprietor. Huge amount of pitch space. Relaxed atmosphere. Beautifully organised and broken up with managed grasses, trees etc. – not just a grass field. Fire pits a big bonus. Can’t wait to come back for a longer stay

  408. We have just been to the hideaway for the first time, with our two boys 10 and 8, you have to book early as it books out quickly and now I understand why. It’s perfect if you want a quiet break with the kids as people adhere to the rule quiet by 11pm. All we ask for in a campsite is quiet, camp fire and brook so this is perfect. We love the layout and have booked another trip there but in a hobbit pod. Facilities great and very clean..

  409. Spent two days at ‘The Hideaway’ and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The facilities are maintained to a high standard and one word sums the whole place up……..’immaculate’. We will definitely be back in the future. Thanks very much.

  410. Loved it at the Hideaway, loved the fire pits and the fact there was a fridge and freezer! This was a huge bonus. The toilet and shower block were lovely and the surrounding area is absolutely stunning. We will definitely be back. The only thing missing was a kids play area, although we had brought plenty games for our kids,, that would have enabled us to tire them out a bit more. But it’s the only thing I can find to moan about. The Apple and rhubarb cider, yummy!!

  411. We absolutely loved everything about the site. It was perfect for us; sparkling wash facilities and a beautifully kept site but not too much more. We didn’t want camp entertainment, we wanted a place to get away and The Hideaway was just that. The pitch was huge and we had loads of room to spread out, which made it feel more private. The staff were lovely and helpful and the shop sold all the basics just in case. We loved the fire pits and the tripod BBQs, as well as the vintage van selling coffee and pastries in the morning. We will definitely be back – and as soon as possible!

  412. We came to the hideaway @ baxby manor a little apprehensive, we’d seen how beautiful it looked on the website and read the reviews but this was our first ever camping holiday so didn’t really know what to expect. We needn’t have been worried, the staff were outstanding, facilities better than I could have imagined and the setting was idyllic. Because of all of this, we decided to stay an additional night, I would definitely recommend the park to anyone looking for a perfect getaway, and we WILL return!

  413. Hi we had a great stay here facilities were excellent as well as the staff we had a lovely stay shame it was only for 2nights we had a few days of rain, our only downside was a family next to us if they wernt snoring they were shouting at 6am and not giving a dam about anyone but themselves. We didnt let this bother us this is an eco- camp site with a David Bellamy award to its name they also have lovely hot water for the showers, lovely pot wash facilities and shop as well as firepits and the selling of logs for your campfire or natural BBQ. We would defo return and stay for longer within easy reach of the city of York & Harrogate we also drove to pickering to get on the North Yorkshire Steam railway we travelled to Goathland home to Harry Potters Hogsmeade station and also where the series Heartbeat was made, then back on the train for a few hours in Whitby for fish & chips before returning to pickering.

  414. What a fantastic camp site. Lovely spacious pitches, absolutely fantastic facilities. Great little shop and onsite caravan serving teas, coffees and pastries. Local park for the children within walking distance. Staff very helpful and friendly. Village pub shut for refurbishment but local villages within easy distance. Will definitely be visiting again.

  415. We camp every year with 6 families from our village. This was by far the best campsite we have stayed at. Toilet & shower block were always clean. Showers amazing. Fab washing up facilities, drying room & fridges & freezers. Barney, the owner was lovely. Accommodating, polite & funny. The catering caravan does delicious cakes & yummy Latte’s! We can’t wait to return next year. I would like to be able to drive onto the campsite, to unload our gear. It took us a lot longer to set up than normal.

  416. Barney has thought long and hard about what us campers are looking for in a holiday. From perfectly flat and well spaced out pitches , to drying rooms, spotless toilet blocks and even our very own fire pits, this site is nothing less than perfect. I cannot recommend the Hideaway highly enough. There is absolutely nothing to complain about and everything to smile about. Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce the best site I have ever camped on xxxxx

  417. So pleased we booked again for August! Loved the feel of the place. Individual fire pits great, good sized flat pitches, excellent toilet and shower block, clean pot wash room, no queues for anything, lots of handy info and thought the visiting butcher and vintage cake caravan a brilliant touch. Best site we have been too.

  418. Great site with the right mix of feeling like you’re in the middle of nowhere but with clean facilities, big pitches, large areas of grass left long but with mown areas for pitching on and fire pits on each pitch, can’t fault it and already looking forward to going back.

  419. I have been coming to this site since it opened. I think what Barney and his family have achieved is amazing. It’s one of the best independent sites I have stayed at. I like how they mow the tent pitch area, but leave the grass to grow everywhere else. Last year they sowed more wildflower seeds while i was there and it was nice to see that they have come up this year. The whole eco friendly and being kind to nature and working with nature is lovely. Its nice to sit in front of your fire, listening to the gentle roar of it, while birds are singing their evening song and the sun sets leaving a glow on the surrounding trees. It’s heaven for me.

  420. The Hideaway at Baxby Manor is the perfect get away, for those looking for some peace and quiet, the real camp fires make for a cosy relaxing time with no loud music or party tents.. We took our own tent but did have a little nosey at the well appointed Bell tents and the Eco pods which are available to hire for the total “Glamping” experience, we found them to be impressive. We visited during a quieter time, however we would be confident in going at a more busier time as the site lay out is planned in such a way that the pitches are not overcrowded. There is a useful information area holding information of local attractions. The local cider and pressed apple juice is a must to try, my favourite was the rhubarb and apple.

  421. The Hideaway at Baxby is an excellent campsite, the pitches are cricket pitch level and dry, the trees all around keep the wind down to a minimum, the bathroom facilities are five star and amazingly clean and there are plenty of them. The shop is small but had everything I needed and more; tent repair, milk etc, ice creams hard and soft drinks and games for the kids. I took my own tent and received excellent service from Barney throughout my stay, he was available and on sight for the full working day and nothing was any trouble. I read some negative feedback before I arrived, I found it to be groundless in my experience and will definitely be returning to this site. The only problem with this site could be getting a pitch as the word gets out, what a great site it is. Hats off to Barney.

    Liked:
The personal fire pits and reasonably priced log bags (you can take your own but not sure why you would unless you have resources on your own land) The privacy afforded by a generous 6 meters between pitches is superb. The £2 per day for dogs is reasonable and ours loved the place and didn’t mind being on a long-ish lead at all. The shower/loo block really is very clean and more than one might expect for a camp site. Washing up/laundry facilities are fantastic, too. Barney keeps everything ship shape and it shows. The site will only improve, too as the owners have planted trees in well thought out positions which will obviously grow and continue to add beauty and privacy. The little caravan cafe is a lovely touch and although it wasn’t open whilst we there, I got the impression it would be great food (from the menu and from chatting to Barney) The shop is priced well so you’re not totally out of pocket if you forget milk, wine etc The 11pm quiet time ‘curfew& #39; was respected whilst we were there which is great if you have children – on that note the main block is cctv covered so it felt very safe, too. It’s rare that anything exceeds my expectations but this site truly did. We’ll be back! What more can you say?

  423. Brilliant campsite lovely big plots lots of space tranquil and peaceful. Loved the fact fire pits installed on each pitch. Amazing washroom! V friendly and helpful owner. Will be back!!

  424. This was a return visit and every bit as fantastic a stay as the first time. We have stayed in the Hideaway’s cabins and brought our own tent – which despite being large there was plenty of room for on the pitch. the beauty of this site is in no entertainment – plenty of open space and woods for children to make their own, beautiful countryside to walk, run and cycle – with 2 fantastic pubs within easy access. Not to mention great fire pits for the evenings. The staff – Barney! has the friendliest of welcomes, and despite a day of rain the toilets remained mud free – shoe covers provided and the wash facilities are kept so clean all campers followed the “rules” to keep it so. we will definitely be returning.

  425. Lovely couple of days. Very clean, excellent facilities inc. dry room for wet clothes etc. Loved the open fires and BBQ. Had some difficulty in finding the site having been directed up an exhaust crunching pathway by my sat-vav but this was no fault of the site! If we had stayed for longer or without friends with young families, my children may have beneffited from a little park / play area. That said I would definitely stay again.

  426. This was our second visit to The Hideway, and it was perfect, we love this place and would come as much as we can but it is so popular it hard to get booked in unless you book in advance. That on its own proves how lovely this place is, even in the pouring down rain our trip was perfect. Barney the owner can not do enough for you, including lending us a extension lead for the electric hook up as our was too small, you can’t ask for much more than that. This is perfect for a quiet get away and you actually feel you are out in the sticks Julie & Sean Sullivan

  427. Second visit, first time was when it first opened, now it’s matured well, fits in with the countryside and the surroundings, really really is a top notch camp site, with a proud owner with great green credentials. All campers are respectful of the few necessary rules, which reall does improve the ambience.

  428. I loved my stay, I hope to be staying there again someday. As I normally rough it in a bush or woods someplace, the camp site was like a five star hotel to me with hot & cold running water!!! Everyone who was on site seemed to be having a very nice time as well as me. Also I did have a few chats with the park warden who came in the form of a cat at midnight!!! Keep up the good work if more camp sites were as this one I may forgo the bush’s & woods when hiking a little more. Peace K…

  429. Our weekend at The Hideaway was absolutely excellent. The washroom facilities are first class and spotless. We were having a Dads and kids weekend and the kids had a great time running around in the fresh air for hours. The fire pits are great and make the evenings fabulous. There is loads to do in the local area and many brilliant cafés in Thirsk for treats! Overall ten out of ten. We will definitely return to the Hideaway at Baxby Manor. Neil Wooliscroft

  430. Excellent site we couldn’t fault it. Barney the owner was so friendly and helpful nothing was to much trouble for him. The pitches were well spaced out and lovely and flat. The toilets and showers were spotless the drying room is a great idea for those damp towels and clothes. There is a fire pit on each pitch which we made use of every night to sit out and chat under the stars, the bags of wood are reasonably priced and one lasted us all night till 11pm quiet time. We will definitely go back for another visit and we highly recommend the hideaway.

Everything!! The whole place is amazing the pitches are well spaced out, we booked three together as we were with friends it didn’t feel cramped in any way and we all had plenty of room. The toilet and shower block was spotless, the shop was well stocked, the home brew cider is a must to try. The fire pits on each pitch are a great idea and the wood is reasonably priced for a large bag that lasted us all night, we made use of them each night to chat the night away under the stars. We will definitely be going again next year

    Liked:
The facilities are excellent, the little touches make such a difference such as bags for muddy shoes for toilet/shower facilities. The cloths by the sinks to wipe for the next person. The no noise after 11pm and getting to pick your own pitch is brilliant. The little signs around the place make you smile. Gorgeous place and the owner barney is so friendly, nothing is to much trouble. We stayed in a tent pitch the first night and eco pod second night.

  433. Camped with my 15 year old son,we had a wonderful stay, staff really helpful and friendly, pitches not crowded,no loud bar, entertainment etc.Just the way we like it.Lovely to reconnect with each other, limited WiFi access, gave us time to TALK! My son loved the fact you could light real campfires and enjoyed playing his guitar. Peace and quiet at lights out was a bonus as you slept well. Showers, always hot, potwash and fridge/freezer excellent standard and immaculate facilities.Recycling on site great. We were never stuck for places to visit and plenty to keep both age ranges happy. The shop was well stocked and had the essentials as well as wood for your fire, marshmallows to toast for the kids and lovely local cider for the adults. We both enjoyed our stay and the site very much and will definitely return soon for another visit. On the downside, more local signs needed for location,as it is hidden and for us ladies sockets and mirrors away from shower rooms (‘elf and safety’) would make it easier to move between camp chick and glam (glamp!)chick! Saying that our overall scores would be 98/100. We will be back.

  434. We loved staying at this campsite. Very quiet location but near lots of attractions like White Horse, Sutton Bank, Helmsley. Great for nearby walking and cycling. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, each pitch had plenty of space especially as cars were left in car park.

  435. Liked: Everything.
From the moment I arrived, I felt really at home. Apparently Barney who runs the place, takes care of absolutely everything and he is doing a fantastic job. Always helpful, pleasant and polite. The facilities are superb and I rate them as the best that I’ve ever used, spotless shower and toilet block with plenty of hot water. Cloths are left near the sinks so that users can just give them a wipe around to keep them tidy and from what I saw, all the guests did. It was so peaceful there and the “no noise after 11pm” is enforced so a good nights sleep can be had. there is plenty of information in the lobby for things to do locally. There is a well stocked shop on site and a local butcher van comes onto the site on Saturday mornings I will definitely go back, the next time I can get some time off work and I can’t recommend it highly enough

    Disliked: Nothing. Lovely place.

  436. This was the second time we have stayed at The Hideaway. Barney has, on both occasions, been the ultimate host and nothing is too much trouble for him. We slept in the permanent bell tents which are well equipped, stylishly furnished and fairly spacious for 4 people. One of the best things about the campsite are the spotlessly clean toilets and showers. You would think you were staying in a 4* hotel rather than a campsite, they really are a treat! There is a little shop on site and at times, if you’re lucky, a very friendly lady with a caravan parks up to serve tea and cake. The local pub is only a short walk away too. Another added unique feature about the Hideaway is there is a fire pit outside each tent which keeps you warm if you’re mad enough to glamp it in such months as February! We will definitely be returning to The Hideaway. It’s a gem!

  437. We had a lovely stay at the site, the main reason for choosing this site was the open fires, and it had lovely clean eco credentials to boot! I also loved the way that all the (very few) notices or ‘rules’ had an explanation as to why – ie don’t park on the grass (it needs to last all year) rather than a ‘no parking on grass’ blunt sign. It is great to have simple things explained and I think it makes people realise why certain rules are important and to stick to them and helps the children to understand too. Thank you! Will be recommending!

  438. It would be cool to have a pull down nappy changing bench or a just a bigger bench in at least one of the shower rooms to make it easier to lay a baby down and change their nappy after you take them for a shower. Minor quibble though. Love the site, will be back.

  439. We will be returning to the hideaway at baxby manor! Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The amenities were of a high standard and very clean, the area was very peaceful and the management of the site ensured it stayed this way! Loved the addition of the fire pit on each pitch and made good use of it for cooking our meals by hiring a tripod grill from the site. Would love to stay in one of the bell tents on our next visit.

  440. Very pleased to find this gem. We are hardy campers and this site was a luxury pick. We picked this place as it was only 35 mins from home and took our 9mth daughter. This was her first camping trip, the fresh air did her good and she was mesmerised by the campfire and cooking on the grill. What a perfect find. We are booking up again for next year 🙂

  441. Booking on line was very straightforward. Pitches were clearly marked out showing pitch size and access to facilities. When we arrived we could see where our pitch would be before booking in. Each pitch had a fire pit which was very welcome on a cold evening and with the hire of a tripod meant we could BBQ without taking our own. There are no facilities for children on this site but it did not deter them from making their own entertainment. This may not be welcome for some campers but we are used to our grandchildren and so was not a problem. We would like to try the site out of school holiday time though. My only recommendation would be to insist that children be supervised in the toilet/shower area. The shop provides basic items, including gas cannisters which we forgot to take! Any noise dies down before 10pm and by 11pm all is quiet, just how we like it. Cars are not allowed to drive on the grass which means it is not churned up or muddy. Wheelbarrows are provided to transport camping items to your pitch. The distance is short so is not onerous. There are two freezers and one fridge provided for campers. This was invaluable for freezing our ice packs. There are no statics or touring caravans and limited number of motor homes. We have been on many sites where these are given preferential treatment. We paid £20 per night and I think this site was incredible value for money. We hope it doesn’t change the more successful it gets.

  442. Excellent camp site. Good distance between the pitches, great facilities, clean showers & toilets. Found the “hot room” a real benefit for drying towels etc. Only slight grumble was that the access to the site wasn’t great with a rather bumpy & long road to drive down. We used the site as a base to explore Thirsk & York, plus it wasn’t too far to travel for the Moors & Whitby/Scarborough. Would definitely recommend a trip to Whitby (best fish & chips I’ve ever eaten) & Robins Hoods Bay nearby was also a surprising treat. Very like Clovelly in Devon for anyone that’s been there. Would also recommend the Castle Museum at York. Not at all what I expected & probably the best museum I’ve ever visited.

  443. We loved the campsite and the facilities were so clean and everything well thought out. We thought the campfires and ability to buy wood to use was fantastic.

  444. Loved our stay @The Hideaway, it won’t be our last! All facilities are first class and it was a fantastic base for our holiday. Easy driving distances for lots of attractions, York (and Jorvik), Flamingoland, York Maze, Pony Trekking etc etc…. My “no comment” for on-site entertainment is purely because there wasn’t any on-site “entertainment”, but that’s one on the reasons we booked The Hideaway. We were more than happy enjoying our campfire, toasting marshmallows, playing cards and hide n seek at night in the long grass…..no sticky kids disco’s for us thanks. Thanks Barney! 🙂

  445. A lovely spot – well planned and excellent washrooms. We liked being able to have an open fire and hire the grill etc. Not lots of activities on site but it doesn’t claim to have them… Lots of thought put into the environmental issues which was good – maybe need to highlight recycling etc a bit more as a lot of people seemed to be using the wrong bins! Lots to do nearby so would recommend it.

  446. This is a wonderful campsite, firstly it was just tents, I get caravan envy when it rains so it’s nice when we’re all in it together.
The wash and toilet facilities were the best I’ve seen, they were also warmed overnight or early morning with radiators so that 5am toilet trip was toasty and I warmed my back after sleeping on the air bed. The hairdryer and showers were free!! Although the hairdryer wasn’t much use if you had long hair….but it was free.
We all had to do our bit to help keep the toilets clean by removing shoes or putting shoe covers on, which is fine, but occasionally some people wouldn’t and the loos would get muddy water on the floor which would soak your socks if you had chosen to remove your shoes rather than use the covers, in fact if you did remove your shoes the floors may be naturally wet after everyone has washed in the morning anyway so you’d still get wet feet, but as I say shoe covers are provided as well.
The website and details when booking ask you to bring flip flops to wear in the toilets, I didn’t really understand why at first, of course it is to stop you walking muddy footwear in, however you have still walked from the tent in your flip flops. The pitch we had wasn’t as big as we’re used to, neither was next door, they ask you to pitch at least 6 meters from the next person but where we were there really wasn’t room for this. Having said all that this is a lovely camp site, there are wild flowers growing and the grass has been left to grow around pitches to add some privacy, they are going for the natural look and I would like to see this site in May/June time. Each pitch has a fire pit, you can rent a tripod for cooking over it for £5 for the whole stay and there are bags of wood you can buy on site, although we didn’t use it having young inquisitive kids- most other campers did.
The site is quiet, we listened to owls in the nearby trees at night and I sat eating my breakfast watching a little mouse rustling in the long grass next to our tent one morning, there are country walks nearby, you can see the White Horse on the nearby hills – that’s worth a trip out, I think it was 7 miles away, they send gliders up from the same hill and there are national park walks around there. The nearby towns offer a couple of supermarkets (small ish), and a chippy etc.
I thoroughly recommend this site and will go back.

  447. We had a fantastic week at Baxby Manor. The site has a really friendly feel and is beautiful, surrounded by trees and farmland, and peaceful. There’s lots of space between pitches, loads of areas in the middle of the fields for the children to play and make friends. Everybody loved making a fire in the evening. The facilities are really clean and well thought out and the showers are hot, powerful and free. Access is down a long fairly bumpy farm track but this didn’t cause any problems once you find the entrance (good directions are provided with booking but watch out for satnav bringing you in from the wrong direction and trying to cross another farm!) The site is pretty handy for the park and ride into York from Rawcliffe Bar and there’s lots to see in the surrounding area like Helmsley and Thirsk. We will definitely be back next year,

  448. Beautiful location, peaceful (great 11pm rule) ,clean (amazing toilet/shower facilities) great drying room and pot wash, very friendly and helpful owner and the best bit… fire pits. Very happy campers, lovely 2 weeks thank you Barney 🙂

  449. This was our second camping trip as a small family and our first time at The Hideaway. This is definitely my new favourite site. The setting is tranquil and peaceful and the amenities are fantastic. Barney was extremely helpful and even came back after 7 to get us some wood for the campfire after we ran out. We had campfires and toasted marshmallows and even saw a shooting star while stargazing. It really is perfect. Can’t wait for next time.

  450. This was now the third time we have stayed at TheHideaway and we will be going back. Its an absolutely brilliant place which caters for large parties and single campers alike. Barney who runs the place is a very good host, he is not afraid to have a word if you overstep the mark on the noise front after the 11pm curfew and also listens to any complaint you may have and acts (I have never had a complaint).. I have stayed here with large groups, small groups and soon will be going back with just my family, the place scales easily to any of these types of parties and their facilities really are very good.. If you have someone who is scared of camping hire them an ecopod or bell tent and they’ll soon be converted. I can’t praise the site enough, and we’ll have no problem spending more of our cash their in the future.

  451. Not only was this the first time we’ve stayed at The Hideaway, it was actually our first time on a camping break (15th – 19th July). What an initial experience! The Hideaway is absolutely fantastic. In a high pressure world the majority of our stay allowed us to almost completely switch off and unwind – a rare commodity these days. The whole environment is absolutely stunning – natural layout of the site, firepits (used daily), amazing modern facilities; spotless amenity block and such a friendly feeling created by Barney the owner. We will certainly be back, of that there’s no doubt!

One touch I really liked was the “11pm curfew” on noise. Whilst I’m a bit of a night owl, this was great encouragement to simply chill or have an early night. Unfortunately a large group on our final night did not see things this way and were still partying hard until 2.45am. Needless to say, Barney was on the case as this is a crucial rule of the site.

Can’t recommend The Hideaway highly enough!

  452. I am so glad we found the Hideaway at Baxby Manor! We were allowed to have two tents on one pitch which made it much more affordable for us and the pitches were level with short grass (grass in the field was left uncut, which was a nice touch) and a firepit. Barney was there to great us when we checked in and was extremely he
